FOODS TO SUPER CHARGE YOUR WORKOUT! Whatever your workout or sport, these “energy-packed eats” will help you maintain steady energy throughout the week and boost it during your toughest workouts. • Whole grains: Whole oats oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, millet or farro. Your body needs the fast energy of carbs during heavy training cycles. Whole grains are good sources of protein too. • Nuts: A handful of unsalted, natural nuts is a great quick energy source just before a workout. Avoid peanuts, macadamia nuts and cashews. Your best bets are: almonds, walnuts and pecans. • Eggs • Fresh fruit and vegetables • Lean protein: Fish, poultry and beans keep saturated fat to a minimum. • Ground chia seed: Packed with protein, fiber and a good balance of essential fatty acids. Add a spoonful to smoothies or oatmeal for a nutty flavor similar to flax seed. • Sweet potatoes: Try them baked with a sprinkle of walnuts and cinnamon great for breakfast or a snack. • Fluids: Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! • Avocado: Fats should make up about 25% of your daily diet when you’re training, so avocados are an easy way to get the healthy fat.

Celebrate Mardi Gras!
Translated from the French, Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday.” In short, it’s the last day before the traditional Catholic Lenten fasting season leading up to Easter Sunday. For those cities that celebrate it - most famously New Orleans, Louisiana - Mardi Gras means feasts, multiple parades, elaborate costumes and parties. Mardi Gras Origin Some scholars trace Mardi Gras’ roots to the ancient Roman Lupercalia festival, which was held in mid-February. Like many other pagan holidays, early Church leaders incorporated elements of the celebration into the new faith rather than risk alienating converted followers. As Catholicism spread across Europe, so did the Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras Comes to America By the Middle Ages, Mardi Gras or “Carnival,” had become a major holiday in France and early French explorers brought the tradition to the New World when establishing settlements in their explorations of the Mississippi River. With its strong French roots, New Orleans naturally evolved into one of the premier Mardi Gras destinations in the world. Mardi Gras: The Religious roots The Mardi Gras kicks off on the Epiphany, twelve days after Christmas on January 6th, also known as Twelfth Night or Three Kings Day, celebrating the arrival of the three wise men and their gifts to the baby Jesus. The season ends promptly at midnight on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. What’s in a name: Eating a calf The name “Fat Tuesday” comes from the tradition of eating a slaughtered calf on the final day of Carnival. These days, though, that definition has expanded to include feasting on pretty much any rich fatty food. Mardi Gras Around the world Mardi Gras or Carnival is celebrated in many cities around the world besides New Orleans, including Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Nice, France and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But many small towns and municipalities celebrate Mardi Gras as well, including the tiny community of Rubonia, Florida. The Universal Studios Florida theme park also throws a Mardi Gras celebration on weeknights from February to April, featuring parades and concerts by national acts.
Pet Poops/You Scoop
AntSir Pest Control
When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS.
Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test. “Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer. As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.” On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. To read the full announcement from the Texas Education Agency, visit http://www.tea.state.tx.us/news_release.aspx?id=2147510194 (website).

As First and Second Place Champions, both Bud-Botics and Beck Tech will advance to compete in the Lone Star FLL Championship Tournament, which takes place on February 23, 2013 at John H. Reagan High School in Houston. FLL Teams are judged on each of the three parts of the FLL Challenge: The Robot Game - the performance of their robot in head-to-head competition, along with robot design and programming; The Project - a research project and presentation and FIRST Core Values - for how well a team embodies these values. Throughout the build, research and competition process, FLL robotics teams deal with real-world application of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts and hands-on problem solving, as well as honing research and presentation skills. Team CRyptonite students and adult volunteers organize and run the Katy Qualifier Tournament as part of their commitment to community service and to promoting FIRST robotics to inspire future scientists and engineers. The team also founded the FLL programs at Beck JH and Cinco Ranch JH and currently mentor the two Cinco Ranch Junior High FLL teams. The Katy FLL Qualifier Tournament, one of 800 held around the world, was the first step in the regional robotics competition process, which culminates in the Southwest (Texas/New Mexico) FLL Championship Tournament. The winning team from this Championship Tournament will participate in the 2013 FLL World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri in April. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.
10 Y clud
The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.
There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email email@example.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Chef Carlos Vasquez
Make Your Fat Tuesday Phat with New Creation Church! Fat Tuesday marks the end of Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Many traditions celebrate Fat Tuesday with the eating of pancakes, giving the occasion the name ‘Pancake Tuesday’ or ‘Pancake Day.’ Pancakes contain flour, eggs and sugar, which were once forbidden rich foods during Lent. New Creation Church is reviving the old tradition of serving pancakes on Fat Tuesday with a Katy/Fulshear Community Pancake Supper. The public is invited to join us on Tuesday, February 12th, from 5 -7 PM at the Irene Stern Community Center for pancakes and the trimmings! A free will offering will be accepted. Carlos Vasquez, an Executive Sous Chef at the Hyatt Regency Houston, will head the kitchen staff. When asked to volunteer he replied, “Pancakes are too simple! I’ll have to add something special. You’ll have to come to find out what!” Chef Carlos is a graduate of the esteemed Culinary Institute LeNotre and oversees many operations of the hotel including Shula’s Steak House restaurant. The Irene Stern Community Center in Fulshear is located on 6920 Katy Fulshear Rd, 77441. please call Pastor Dale, 832-492-5136 or go to www.newcreationfulshear.org for a group reservation.

The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.
The December 9th concert, “Christmas around the World,” was the nineteenth year that the congregations of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have combined for a Christmas concert. The collaboration began in 1994, at the invitation of Father Jack Dinkins, when new neighbors, the Katy Stake Center, was built across the street. This year’s choir was made up of 120 voices from both congregations, with the addition of a children’s choir of nearly 100, plus Epiphany’s small Contemporary Choir, as well as a community orchestra.

Katy Elks Host Annual Best Buddies Christmas Dance
New Creation Church brought a Christmas gift to shoppers at the Katy/Fulshear Kroger Store! During the December 16th Grand Opening of the new Kroger’s Store on FM 1093, voices of the community took part in the First Annual Community Sing-Along. New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Pastor Olson, founding pastor of New Creation, says, “We have been invited to make this an annual event. Christian Ministry in a community does not always have to be serious!”

Holiday Performance at Crosspoint Community Church benefitting Toys for Tots Connolly Dance Arts hosted a Holiday Performance at Crosspoint Community Church, which benefitted Toys for Tots. Connolly Families donated over 8 SUV’s of toys worth over $15,000, which were delivered to area Fire Departments.
Friday, December 7th was the date - Katy Elks lodge was the place - food, fun & dancing were the order of the night as 100 Katy ISD Best Buddies participants converged to claim an evening created just for them. The Best Buddies program, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit national organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Since 1993, Best Buddies High Schools has paired students with IDD in one-to-one friendships with high school students. By introducing Best Buddies into public and private high schools, participants are crossing the invisible line that too often separates those with disabilities from those without. Today, Best Buddies boasts more than 900 high school chapters worldwide. In Katy ISD we have six high schools that participate in the Best Buddies program and the Katy Elks lodge Christmas and end-of-school dances. Since this was the Christmas dance, it would have not been complete without a visit from Santa, an event eagerly awaited by all present. Katy Elks member Don Accord subbed for the North Pole Santa and was quite a hit as each student present had the opportunity to have his/her picture taken with him and received a copy to take home. Pizza, sandwiches, cupcakes and cookies were a few of the food offerings that helped fill everyone, students and adults alike. Butter Bartek, Katy Elks lodge member and local entertainer provided music
