For Peep’s Sake, Grab Your Basket because the Egg Hunt is BACK! March 30, 2013 - Wisdom Woods Park
Green Trails Neighborhood Association is EGGcited to host the annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 30, 2013! The EGGstravaganza starts at 10 am with age-specific hunts, a DJ, face painting and more. This event requires a lot of help and we are looking for volunteers. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up.
COMMUNITY EVENTS CHAIR NEEDED
Our current chair will be stepping down and we are in need of someone to step up! We have 4 events a year and without a chair, the events would not take place. If you are interested in being chair for community events, please contact Kristie Poldervaart at email@example.com or 281-647-9483.
POOL MONITOR NEEDED FOR PARK CYPRESS
If you use our neighborhood pools, we need you! We are in need of a pool monitor for Park Cypress. This is an easy way to volunteer. You simply observe 2 or 3 times a month [during swim season], each item on the check list, which is provided to you and report any issues to the Pool Chair. If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact Kristie Poldervaart at firstname.lastname@example.org or 281-647-9483.
If you see something suspicious, call the constable at 281-463-6666. Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it. Park your cars in your driveway and lock them. Keep doors and windows locked (including garages) and alarms set. Trim shrubs so windows are visible. If you are going to be out of town, turn in a Vacation Watch Form. Use timers on lights. See our website for other tips.
PAVILION RELEASE FORM
To reserve a park pavilion, please contact Mark Holbrook (Parks Chair) at email@example.com and fill out the release form and fax it to Crest at 281-5797062.

If you or your child can only take lessons during prime time, please sign up for the single court at Park Cypress to prevent injury and frustration to our neighbors playing a match. If the lesson is to be a regularly set day and time, please contact the tennis committee for approval and court time can be blocked off for you at the Park Cypress court. The courts are occupied for tennis league play on Monday and Wednesday mornings and no lessons can be given during league play. Residents ONLY may reserve court times. A Green Trails resident who is a USPTA certified tennis pro is available for private or semi-private lessons at our courts for residents only. If interested, contact Laurence Sombito at 281-769-2701. Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time in advance for lessons or leagues, must contact the tennis committee through Elaine Kearney at 281-492-6848. To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign-up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. (Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved.) New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card. The wheelchair access gate has been tampered with and will be locked to prevent use by non-residents. Residents needing wheelchair access to the tennis courts, please contact the tennis committee and we will be happy to provide you with a key. The lights at the Gerri Ayers courts are numbered. Please note the number of the light before calling to have it repaired. Any maintenance problems at the courts can be reported to Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880. The tennis court lights are on a timer, they should come on at dusk and turn off by 10:30 pm. PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your yearly maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home. Anyone can report vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition. Please note: the tennis courts are for tennis ONLY. Please let your children know the courts are not for soccer, bike riding, skating, climbing or any other use.
TENNIS LESSONS/COACHING: Please book tennis lessons by signing up for a court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening or weekend morning lessons, please.)
We currently have A level teams on Monday and Wednesday and a B level team on Wednesdays also. The tennis committee has approved the court usage for these times. (9 am-12 Noon, Sept.-Nov. in the fall season and Jan.-Apr. for the spring season.) If you are interested in playing league tennis, contact Valerie Henry or Elaine Kearney, numbers below.

How Do We Look?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.
Green Trails Phase II Homeowners Association does not have a business relationship with or endorse any of the companies advertising in this newsletter. We remind residents to exercise due diligence when selecting contractors.

“Changing Acorns to Oaks” is the theme at Texas Christian School this fall, as well as the title of their annual school wide play this past November. Families and community members enjoyed an eventful evening at the farm where Jr. High and High School students played key roles and students 2 years old – 12th grade sang songs. This fun filled evening will be remembered for years by the class of 2013 as they gave the audience quite a laugh in their roles. Academic, social and spiritual growth is a priority for the administration and staff of TCS. Plan to visit the campus at 6:30 PM for our Open House on February 21st and March 26th to learn more about what Texas Christian has to offer. Texas Christian School is located at 17810 Kieth Harrow Blvd., Houston, TX 77084. Phone 281-550-6060 and website is www.TexasChristianSchool.org

STAAR SCORES WILL NOT AFFECT COURSE GRADES FOR 2012 - 2013
Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test. “Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer. As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.” On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. To read the full announcement from the Texas Education Agency, visit http:// www.tea.state.tx.us/news_release.aspx?id=2147510194 (website).

Make Your Fat Tuesday Phat with New Creation Church!
Fat Tuesday marks the end of Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Many traditions celebrate Fat Tuesday with the eating of pancakes, giving the occasion the name ‘Pancake Tuesday’ or ‘Pancake Day.’ Pancakes contain flour, eggs and sugar, which were once forbidden rich foods during Lent. Chef Carlos Vasquez
New Creation Church is reviving the old tradition of serving pancakes on Fat Tuesday with a Katy/Fulshear Community Pancake Supper. The public is invited to join us on Tuesday, February 12th, from 5 -7 PM at the Irene Stern Community Center for pancakes and the trimmings! A free will offering will be accepted. Carlos Vasquez, an Executive Sous Chef at the Hyatt Regency Houston, will head the kitchen staff. When asked to volunteer he replied, “Pancakes are too simple! I’ll have to add something special. You’ll have to come to find out what!” Chef Carlos is a graduate of the esteemed Culinary Institute LeNotre and oversees many operations of the hotel including Shula’s Steak House restaurant. The Irene Stern Community Center in Fulshear is located on 6920 Katy Fulshear Rd, 77441. please call Pastor Dale, 832-492-5136 or go to www.newcreationfulshear.org for a group reservation.

New Creation Church brought a Christmas gift to shoppers at the Katy/Fulshear Kroger Store!
During the December 16th Grand Opening of the new Kroger’s Store on FM 1093, voices of the community took part in the First Annual Community SingAlong. New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Pastor Olson, founding pastor of New Creation, says, “We have been invited to make this an annual event. Christian Ministry in a community does not always have to be serious!”
The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR 30+ Years Experience/Family Owned
The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email email@example.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

Fudge Truffle Cheesecake 1 1/2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup butter, softened 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). In a large mixing bowl, mix together crushed vanilla wafers, confectioners’ sugar, cocoa and butter or margarine by hand. Press ingredients into a 9 inch springform pan. In the top of a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips, making sure that they are very smooth. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy with an electric mixer. Gradually beat in condensed milk until smooth. Mix in melted chocolate, eggs and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer on low speed until the ingredients are thoroughly blended. Pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 55 minutes. The cake will seem under-baked in the center, but will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven. Source: allrecipes.com, Submitted by: Macs
French Butter Cakes (Madeleines)
2 eggs 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup butter
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/3 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1/3 cup granulated sugar for decoration
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter and flour 12 (3 inch) madeleine molds; set aside. Melt butter and let cool to room temperature. In a small mixing bowl, beat eggs, vanilla and salt at high speed until light. Beating constantly, gradually add sugar and continue beating at high speed until mixture is thick and pale and ribbons form in bowl when beaters are lifted, 5 to 10 minutes. Sift flour into egg mixture 1/3 at a time, gently folding after each addition. Add lemon zest and pour melted butter around edge of batter. Quickly but gently fold butter into batter. Spoon batter into molds; it will mound slightly above tops. Bake 14 to 17 minutes, or until cakes are golden and the tops spring back when gently pressed with your fingertip. Use the tip of the knife to loosen madeleines from pan; invert onto rack. Immediately sprinkle warm cookies with granulated sugar. Madeleines are best eaten the day they’re baked. Leftover madeleines are wonderful when dunked into coffee or tea. Variation: Chocolate Madeleines: Omit lemon zest. Increase sugar to 1/2 cup. Substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for 2 tablespoons of the flour; sift into batter with flour. EDITOR’S NOTE: If you do not have a Madeleine mold pan, you can use mini muffins pan or whoopee mold pan instead. (I haven’t tried, but would think even a cornbread stick pan would work if greased and floured well enough.) Source: allrecipes.com, Submitted by: Judy Farris
