Boy Scouts and Flags for GP Homeowners

A Boy Scout troop is interested in placing a Flagpole with the US Flag in your yard. This troop has boys from outside of Governors Place and they want to know if there is a “local” scout troop that would be interested in the following project: For a fee to the homeowner (yet to be determined), the scout troop will purchase a flag and flagpole and fabricate a ground holder in your yard in a location determined by the homeowner. The homeowner can then display the flag on any dates and for durations of his choice (GPHOA has maximum of three days). Storage of the flag and pole should be an easy procedure. To keep uniformity, there will be only one size pole (probably either six or eight feet) and flag (probably 3’ by 4’) available for purchase. If you represent a scout troop that has boys from GP and are interested in doing this project, please contact Dave Gilkeson at either Gilkeson@swbell. net or 281-392-3771. We are planning on publishing this for three months. After three months, if no “local” scout troop is interested, then we will invite the original troop to make a presentation - possibly as early as the annual meeting in January.

Crime reporting

Dear Governors Place Residents, we have seen an increase in activity that required sheriff attention. Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc. We have to crackdown on crime in our neighborhood.

Maintaining Property Values

One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed

restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.

Waste removal

Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.

RECREATIONAL VEHICLES

Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER

• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • store trash cans out of street view. • Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.

PARKING IN STREET

Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.

Street Light Maintenance

To report a streetlight that is not working, call Reliant Energy at 713207-2222. You need to report both the number on the base of the pole and the street address.

There is a very interesting story about Cupid and his mortal bride Psyche in Roman mythology. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal, she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid, as soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished, too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. She wandered trying to find her love, until she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous than the last.  For her last task, Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto and put it in the box. During her trip, she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber.

Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols and everybody knows about the boy as a mischievous, winged child, armed with bow and arrows. The arrows signify desires and emotions of love and Cupid aims those arrows at humans, causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid has always played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. In ancient Greece, he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman’s, he was Cupid and his mother was Venus.

Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche’s love for Cupid, made her a goddess. Tammy Smith, Owner-Operated

STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG

As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.”

GEORGE FOUNDATION HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE FOR GRADUATING SENIORS

For graduating seniors from Fort Bend County public high schools, The George Foundation has established a financial-need based scholarship program administered by Scholarship Management Services, a department of Scholarship America. Scholarships in the amount of $20,000, awarded $5,000 per year, are renewable for up to four years for full-time students attending an accredited twoor four-year public Texas institution of higher learning. Guidelines and applications can be found on www.thegeorgefoundation.org, the Foundation’s website. Deadline for applying is March 15, 2013. Questions may be emailed to scholarships@thegeorgefoundation. org or by calling Theresa Kopnicky, Grant Associate, at 281-3426109.

STAAR SCORES WILL NOT AFFECT COURSE GRADES FOR 2012 - 2013

On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. KATY ISD PARTNERS IN EDUCATION KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES CAMPAIGN

Together we have raised $16,199 for grocery gift cards to support 293 Katy ISD families for the holidays. For that, we thank you! Many blessings to you and your families.

Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test. “Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand

KATY THEATRE ARTS BOOSTER CLUB BLANKET PROJECT

The Katy High School Theatre Arts Booster Club has begun a service project to donate fleece blankets to residents at the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Facility and the Heritage Park Nursing Home in Katy. Students and parents involved with the Katy High School Theatre Arts Program put the blankets together during rehearsals of their musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. The blankets are cut from soft, fleece fabric and the edges are hand tied into a decorative fringe. “We have always helped out with other community service projects in the past, but this is our first solo project,” said Katy High School Theatre Director Rachel Smith. The idea for making blankets came to her when she saw blanket kits on sale at a local craft store. “I realized it would be cheaper if we actually cut the fabric ourselves,” Smith said, “instead of buying kits.” The Theatre students decided to donate their blankets to residents at two local facilities because one of the senior theatre students had a grandparent at the Cinco Ranch facility. “I think students providing service to others in their community shows our kids how blessed they are,” Smith said, “and how necessary it is for them to think of others.” The students had a goal of delivering the blankets to the residents of the communities themselves on December 10th. For more information, contact Kathryn Gilliam, KTABC President, at kathrynkamishgilliam@ yahoo.com (email).

The 2013 Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo

It made history in 1943 as the first of its kind to be established on a local school level and now the Katy Rodeo has grown to encompass three nights of rodeo entertainment for the whole family. 70 years later, the Katy Rodeo is one of the few remaining youth and professional rodeos still supporting FFA. In conjunction with the annual Katy ISD livestock show, the Katy Rodeo is an event that supports agricultural education within the Katy Independent School District. The livestock show, rodeo, carnival and parade draw sold out crowds from Katy and many of the surrounding areas.

The Katy Rodeo has something for all ages. The Katy Cowgirl Mounted Drill Team opens each night’s performance while a Katy ISD student performs the national anthem. The rodeo consists of all pro events including Bareback and Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling, Ladies Breakaway, Calf and Team Roping, Bull Riding and Barrel Racing while allowing the Katy youth to participate in junior Calf Roping and junior Barrel Racing. The young children can also participate in the rodeo events by joining the Stick Horse race or the ever-popular Mutton Bustin’. The KISD FFA students have a chance to compete in the “ever popular” Calf Scramble. The carnival also delights spectators of all ages, as well as the annual Saturday Morning Parade. The 2013 Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo kicks off its historic 70th year on Thursday, February 21st and runs through Saturday, February 23rd. Please visit www.katyrodeo.org for more information on the rodeo.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

This year’s choir was made up of 120 voices from both congregations, with the addition of a children’s choir of nearly 100, plus Epiphany’s small Contemporary Choir, as well as a community orchestra.   The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.

New Creation Church brought a Christmas gift to shoppers at the Katy/Fulshear Kroger Store!

During the December 16th Grand Opening of the new Kroger’s Store on FM 1093, voices of the community took part in the First Annual Community Sing-Along. New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Pastor Olson, founding pastor of New Creation, says, “We have been invited to make this an annual event. Christian Ministry in a community does not always have to be serious!”
