Happy New Year!
HOLIDAY CELEBRATION WITH SANTA
The community celebrated its holiday event with the arrival of Santa on December 8th. Kids of all ages and their parents and grandparents gathered at the pool house to pose with Santa. Some kids just refused to leave the bounce house because it was too much fun. Others lined up to ride the mini train under the direction of Board member Kerry Wright. Deputy Douglas Glentzer escorted all train trips around the lake to ensure safety. Popcorn and beverages were served. Everyone enjoyed the event. Thank you very much to all who attended. Our special thanks to Milton Bade for playing the Santa so well three years in a roll, Ken and Jackie Kubiak who made a tremendous contribution in making this event a success and David Kubiak for taking time to play a huge role in setting up photography. The complimentary photos will be emailed out during the next few weeks. If you do not receive your photo or get someone else’s photo in error, please inform Sam Vyas at email@example.com

Homeowner assessment for 2013 is due in full on January 1. 2013. If you still have not paid, please hurry. Dues become delinquent on January 31, 2013. Any outstanding amount past that date will incur finance charges and may also result into penalties. AMI will also revoke homeowner privileges (such as swimming pool entry) for homeowners that are delinquent. Timely payment of your assessment reduces third party collection fees that HOA could incur, thereby saving money for all homeowners.
MOLD AND MILDEW ON HOME SIDING
Most homes in the neighborhood are now over 10 years old. This is when homes need repainting. We realize that this is a high expense item and general economic conditions currently not very pleasing. So please start budgeting and saving. You will be amazed how a little bit of money put away each month will accumulate quickly to pay for the repainting expense. If the mold and mildew shows real bad on your home, consider pressure washing to remove it until you are ready to repaint. Make our neighborhood beautiful.
REMOVE BLACK DEPOSITS FROM WALKWAYS AND DRIVEWAY
Most homeowners with concrete walkways and driveways know the frustration of persistent algae growth during the rainy season. With each rainstorm, a greenish-black growth starts to spread inch by inch. This problem is more pronounced when water from your sprinkler system sits on the concrete for an extended time. With most homes in our neighborhood over 10 years old, these black stains on certain properties have become an eyesore. Removing these through pressure washing and chemical cleaning will not only make your property more appealing; but it will also add to resale value of properties in the entire neighborhood. In addition this organic growth can be dangerous if tracked into your home or car. It can be slippery and staining to your carpets too, so make sure that you take steps to remove the stains before they become too hard to remove.
UNBAGGED GRASS CLIPPINGS
Although not bagging your grass clippings may be eco-friendly and the option chosen by an individual homeowner, we would like to remind homeowners that unbagged clippings belong on the lawn; not on the walkways, driveways and public streets. Please be courteous to your neighbors and ensure that your grass clippings do not end up on your or your neighbor’s driveway, walkway or the street.
Homeowners with a fence that faces the street must stain the visible section with approved color. The following are the approved stain brand and colors. You must pick from this list in order to comply with Deed Restrictions: Home Depot BEHR Exterior Wood Stain, Solid Color DP-396 Terra Cotta or DP-529 Cappucino Both these are rated for 25-year protection of your fence.

Once again, please note that you must choose one of these 2 colors. No exceptions. The architectural committee through AMI will issue notices of deed violation to homeowners who fail to stain their fence. Once again, please be proactive and do not wait for the notice to arrive. Your effort to keep our neighborhood beautiful is highly appreciated.

PAY ATTENTION IF YOU WALK YOUR DOG
Please clean-up after your dog. We have received a number of calls recently from residents complaining that they are finding dog feces in their yards potentially from others who walk their dogs and fail to clean-up after their pets. In addition to being inconsiderate to your fellow neighbors, dog feces are a health threat to animals and people. They contain parasites and infectious bacteria that cause serious illnesses. Please be sensitive to this issue and pick-up after your pets at all times. Also visit with your veterinarian for more information about the health threats and for safe ways to pick up after your dog.
Want to congratulate a neighbor on a recent birth of a baby? Want to recognize a neighbor on their wedding or an anniversary? Now you can see these types of personal messages published in our newsletter. Please send an email with these announcements to Carol Vyas at email@example.com
OBSERVE ALL TRAFFIC RULES
When driving through neighborhood streets, pay attention and observe all rules. For the safety of children, walkers, joggers, etc., drive slow and come to a complete stop at the STOP signs. Do not text or talk on the cell phone while driving. Do so only if you have a hands-free device. Violating rules can prove to be very costly. So be careful.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature

will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event, please contact Marie Holmes at firstname.lastname@example.org or 281-807-3591.

The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college.

2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair - Cy-Falls High School Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm
Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! For more information, contact Erin Kasperek below: email@example.com Phone: 713-706-5652 | Mobile: 281-732-8324 www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx

Church Events Cornerstone Umc Wesley Covenant Service January 13, 2013
On Sunday, January 13th, during the 8:30 and 10:45 AM worship services as a part of the worship celebration, we will be including the Wesley Covenant Service from the United Methodist Book of Worship. The first usage of the Covenant Service by a meeting of Methodists was August 11, 1755. During the week before that event, Wesley had been encouraging the Society at Spitalfields to use the covenant as a “means of increasing serious religion which had been frequently practiced by our forefathers and attended with eminent blessing.” Several mornings before he actually introduced the liturgy, Wesley explained it again, talking about the manner of doing the covenant. Then on Friday, August 11th, Wesley “recited the tenor of the covenant proposed, in the words of that blessed man, Richard Alleine.” About 1800 people arose and gave testimony of their assent. “Such a night I scarce ever saw before. Surely the fruit of it shall remain forever.” Wesley’s motivation for using the service in 1755 came from two sources: (1) He had recently read Gillies’ Historical Collections which spoke of a solemn renewing of a covenant in Massachusetts in 1680 and (2) Richard Alleine (161181) whose influence had touched Wesley’s paternal grandparents and whose covenant had been used in Wesley’s family at Epworth. The use of this service proved so successful that it was used frequently, especially on New Year’s Day or the first Sunday in the New Year. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us for this special service.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose

personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

When one has lost a spouse by death, the initial feeling is shock followed a by merciful numbness. It is when this numbness recedes that the pain becomes so intense and the loneliness begins. At this stage Lifeline can be helpful. We provide companionship of people who have experienced the same emotional upheaval and trauma. Lifeline provides a place to belong and help for building a life without a partner because we understand the world doesn’t stop for your grief, no matter how bad your heart is broken. Lifeline Support Group for Widows and Widowers meets on the first Thursday of each month for a general meeting and has activities throughout the month. We are a mutual support group, call for details and come check us out. Contact Louise Sprawls at 713-467-5834 or Jackie at 281-4972663.
