November 2012 Westfield Board of Directors Meetings

The Westfield Board of Directors meets every third (3rd) Monday of each month except for the month of the annual meeting. Owners are invited to attend these meetings during the open forum session, but may be dismissed should the Board adjourn into Executive Session. Make sure to register online at www.spectrumam.com to receive monthly notification for upcoming Board meetings and also to access the Community Calendar to see upcoming community events.

ONGOING PROBLEMS IN AREA NEIGHBORHOODS

School is back in session again, but that does not mean that we no longer have problems with some of our young people in our neighborhood. Because of the rash of burglaries and assaults in neighboring communities, we must all be vigilant and aware of what is happening in our subdivision. These minor “children” who were once labeled as juvenile delinquents are frequently truant, hang out after curfew and posture as bad boys and more. On a recent Friday night in Westlake Forest, there was an assault with a deadly weapon, a baseball bat was the weapon used. This assault was directly related to an assault on the previous night involving minors. In addition to the adolescents, one parent and one grandparent were arrested. Since the perpetrators were “children” in the eyes of Texas law, the penalties probably will not be harsh, but we will see. CALL IT IN: 713-221-6000 or 911 When you see something suspicious, like truant “children” who gather in the subdivision during school hours or unusual activity in and around unoccupied homes, call it in.

Report residences where the yards have not been mowed, as this is an open invitation to many illegal activities. This advertises that no one is taking responsibility for the property and trespassers will probably not be noticed. There have been numerous news reports on television about marijuana “grow houses,” etc. in these neglected properties. Report these properties to the Management Company 281-343-9178 (note who you speak to). Those involved in the drug business are violent and have no regard for others. Protect your property values and your personal safety. If you SEE IT, REPORT IT.

Sheriff’s Phone Numbers

The non-emergency phone number for the Harris County Sheriff’s Department is 713-221-6000. The number for the Clay Road station is 281-463-2648. But if you actually have an emergency that needs assistance right away, please call 9-1-1.

Management Company

With the management company, there is also a website that provides a good bit of information for homeowners. An owner can go to the website, which is www.spectrumam.com and log in with your address. It will ask you to provide an email address as well. After completing the process, you will receive a password (within 24 hours) that you can use for future logins. This site will give you access to the governing documents for the association as well as a way to pay your assessments online and submit ACC requests for improvements to your property. Another advantage to being registered on the site is that the Board or the management company can send broadcast emails to owners when they need to get information out quickly to the neighborhood. The email addresses will not be provided to any other entity and will only be used for association business. Please register today! If you need to contact Spectrum for any reason, you can call them at 281-343-9178.

Deed Restriction Enforcement

Deed restriction violations are recorded on monthly drive by inspections through all sections of Westfield. These are performed by Spectrum Association Management. Homeowners with violations are notified by a series of letters according the Deed Restriction Enforcement Policy. This Policy serves as procedure for Spectrum Association Management to follow. If you receive a letter, don’t take it as an insult or a call to battle. The worst action is to ignore the letter. If you have resolved the problem, need more time or circumstances do not allow you to resolve the problem at this time, notify Spectrum Association Management as per the instructions in the letter. If you wish to report a deed restriction violation in your neighborhood, please complete the form on the web Site.

Hazardous Household Waste

It is illegal to dump motor oil, paint, garden chemicals, and other materials down the street storm drains. These flow directly into our water supply. For more information, call 311 or go to www. houstonsolidwaste.org or http://texas.earth911.org/master.asp for more information about a wide range of environmental protection programs and news.

Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs:
With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

281-391-SOLD (7653) www.lizcarter.com Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1976

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping.   The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep.   The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift

is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. •  Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com
