HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB features “texas gardens above and below sea level”
Hearthstone Garden Club’s next meeting on Tuesday, October 16th will feature Shelley Du Puy of the NOAA’s Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary team. Ms. Du Puy will present to our club a talk on the comparison of our Texas terrestrial flower gardens to the underwater ones of the sanctuary located approximately 100 miles off the coast of Texas. Shelley Du Puy joined NOAA’s Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary team in 1994. As the sanctuary’s Education & Outreach Coordinator, she is responsible for coordinating all education, outreach, public relations and non-research volunteer activities for the sanctuary. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Science from Texas A&M
University at Galveston and has over 30 years of experience with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in areas ranging from fisheries data collection to wetlands conservation to environmental education. While working as a Fisheries Biologist, Shelley observed that many citizens had little or no concept of how activities on land and in coastal areas affected the larger ecosystem. This was the motivating factor in her decision to focus her career on the education aspects of natural resource management. Hearthstone Garden Club’s monthly meeting, held in the Ladies’ Locker Room at Hearthstone Country Club, begins at 7 PM with a social period, followed by Ms. Du Puy’s presentation and a short business meeting with refreshments. All guests are welcome to join us for the “Texas Gardens Above and Below Sea Level” presentation. We look forward to seeing you.

SEPTEMBER Yard of the Month
Congratulations on winning Yard of the Month for September 2012! Ike and Shirley Lucas have designed a beautiful front yard. The sound of water splashing draws you into a yard framed by trees. Centered near the front door is a fountain topped with yellow potato vines and a background of blue plumbago trellised near a shaded front porch and seating area. A lovely place to find cooling shade and enjoy the sounds of water on a summer day.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulfur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Private Schools Cypress Christian School
Brothers There is something special about being able to play football with your brother. The Warriors took the field for the home opener with five sets of brothers among the 46 team members. When the players are asked for words to describe our team, one word that often comes up is brotherhood. It is truly becoming that, both on and off the field, but for ten players in particular, it runs very deep. Cy-Christian to Host K-12 Fall Preview On Thursday, November 8th, from 7-8:30 PM, prospective families will be given the opportunity to visit Cypress Christian School to gather information and tour of the campus. The Admissions Department will begin accepting applications for 2013-2014 on this date. For more information, visit CypressChristian.org or call 281-469-7745. Not an Average Cy-Christian Football Practice Early in each season, Warrior football players take a day of practice to do something a little different. They leave the pads in the lockers and load the bus to travel to another part of town. Over 50 football players, coaches and dads invade a neighborhood that could use more smiles and they host a football camp. This year, 30+ kids from Houston’s First Baptist Faith Center
learned a little about football while having lots of fun. Scotty Sanders has worked at the Faith Center for years and was impressed with how the CyChristian players engaged and interacted with the kids. Coach Spenn’s goal for his coaches is for them to be transformational. He said, “To do this, we have to think outside the box. Some may see it as a loss of a practice, but the reality is that the impact on the team will have a far greater value than running a few extra plays in a practice.” Many of our players were greatly impacted and will remember days like this for a lifetime. It was evident that the kids from the neighborhood had a great time based on the smiles on their faces. The love of Christ was shared through the game of football and that is the definition of true success.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES) requested the district’s assistance in distributing prevention and protection information about West Nile Virus. Outdoor temperatures remain high and warm weather means more mosquitoes. Although the number of people in Harris County contracting West Nile Virus is lower than in other parts of Texas, HCPHES has documented a rise of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes and birds. For your convenience, information is posted on the district website. If you have questions or need additional information, please go to www.hcphes.org and view 2012 West Nile Virus Response.

On her Tex-O-Key blog, Chandwani wrote, “DCON is a way for us all to come together at the end of the year to celebrate our dedicated service with passion, excitement and enthusiasm. DCON is extremely important because of the diffusion of ideas and practices that takes place.” The Cypress Falls club sponsor, Kathie Kiklas, said, “Roshni has been an enthusiastic member of our Key Club and I couldn’t be prouder of everything she has accomplished.” We look forward to many great things ahead from Chandwani.
Chandwani poses with the rest of the Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District Board (left to right: Kevin Duong - District Secretary, Lindyn Davis - District Editor, Chandwani, Maci Slater - District Treasurer, Brian O’Hara - District Governor).
Chandwani proposed for every Key Clubber to change the world by being a SUPERhero - Speaking, Uniting, Preparing, Executing and Revising. Her oratory taught Key Club members to follow the five steps in order to have a substantial impact on their communities. Additionally, she included information about the significance of The Eliminate Project, an organization determined to eradicate maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the world by 2015. 160 babies die daily, but MNT has been eliminated in twenty countries since 2000. Chandwani’s speech speaks to the impact of MNT and how it is very possible to stop the disease. The accolade was announced at the end of the International Convention before Key Club members from around the world. Chandwani said, “I was honored to receive such a distinction because
Though the Cypress Falls Key Club has consistently won big at the district and international conventions, its members have kept their eye on the real prize - making an impact on their community. Throughout the summer, members have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, K2 Academy and more. The Cypress Falls Key Club is looking for even more events where they can lend a helping hand. If your organization is in need of devoted volunteers or if you’d like to make a donation to The Eliminate Project, be sure to contact the Cypress Falls Key Club President, Gabi Bradshaw, at firstname.lastname@example.org .
CYPRESS FALLS KEY CLUB RECRUITS INCOMING FRESHMAN
With the advent of the 2012 school year right before our eyes, the Cypress Falls Key Club has been busily occupied with the most important mission of the year - recruiting members. For every club, their main source of new volunteers is the influx of freshmen that enter the school’s double doors each fall semester. Though many current members reach out to friends and family to join the organization, not all prospective Key Clubbers are lucky enough to be in contact with someone who is already involved in the program.

281-650-1833 Because of this, the Cypress Falls Key Club goes fishing for new members every year at Fish Camp. Many of the incoming freshman are anxious yet inquisitive about what’s to come during the next four years of their lives. As upperclassmen that have been there ourselves, it’s our job to make them feel welcome in our school. Further, as committed Key Club members, it’s even more important for us to treat others with the respect, integrity and care that are characteristic of the organization we’re a part of. At Fish Camp, Key Club members enthusiastically greet and befriend the incoming ninth graders to ease some of the worries they feel about entering a new phase in their lives. A nervous freshman-to-be last year, I remember
hearing the energetic chanting of “Join Key Club!” and wondering why anyone would choose to join a club of key-makers. My curiosity got the best of me, nonetheless and I decided to take a closer look. The President of the organization was enthusiastically telling a small group of students about their numerous volunteer events. As I watched her speak, I determined that I wanted to find something I could be equally passionate about and signed my name to become a new member. Meeting an amicable person or discovering a new niche can make a big, scary school a much nicer placer to be. The recruitment of new members at Fish Camp helps incoming freshmen meet new friends, build their character and recognize a passion for volunteering while also having a lasting impact on the community. The more volunteers, the more of an impact. What’s greater is that in four years, these freshmen will be leading the Cypress Falls Key Club. In four years, they’ll be crossing the stage and leaving the halls of Cypress Falls to become adults. In four years, the concepts they learn as a volunteer will be something they can apply to the real world. Key Club members who learn to do “whatever it takes” to help those around them in high school will carry those skills throughout life and help people wherever they can - and that’s what Key Club is all about.

CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH BETWEEN JOBS NETWORKING
Steeple Placed on New Church under Construction in Fairfield
On Aug. 30th, a 40-foot steeple was placed atop a new church under construction in Fairfield. The new meetinghouse is being built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints at 21521 Fairfield Place Drive, next to Salyards Middle School. Scheduled for completion in January 2013, it will serve three local congregations of Latter-day Saints, commonly called Mormons. Bishop Marc Calvert, who ministers to one of these congregations, said, “Members of the Church in Fairfield have met in a church building in Waller for about 20 years. As Fairfield has grown and developed, so also has the number of Church members in this area. There are now approximately 250 Latter-day Saints living in the Fairfield community and they are looking forward to worshiping much closer to home.” The new red and beige brick structure has a traditional architectural style accented with Texas stone. The facility will include a chapel (sanctuary) for Sunday worship services, classrooms for gospel study and a gymnasium with a hardwood basketball court. When completed, the building will also host youth activities on Wednesday evenings, including meetings for several Church-sponsored troops of the Boy Scouts of America.
Every Tuesday, 10:00 AM • Limited Seating CAC is dedicated to helping, networking, educating and empowering those who still believe in the American dream. We believe that God has a job for you somewhere and it will take networking power to get the job. Information is power. It is all about job networking and helping one another. Come and network with others between jobs. Located at 5930 Hwy. 6 N., Suite F-1, Houston, TX 77084, 281-804-2520, Fax 281-741-1686.

General admission is $50 per person, Texas Hold’em Entry is an add’l $20 per person. The Pink Tie Affair is an opportunity for the local community to gather in celebration and remembrance of those who have been affected by breast cancer. The evening will include Casino Games, a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, Hors d’oeuvres, Dancing, Door Prizes, Raffle and a Silent Auction. In order to make our fundraiser as successful as possible, we are looking to the good neighbors of our Community for their support. There are many ways in which you can contribute to the Pink Tie Affair as either a sponsor or a donor. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere.

Houston Family Arts Center received the Best Gem of a Theater Award at the inaugural Houston Theater Awards presented by the Houston Press. The Houston Theater Awards presentation was held at the MKT Bar August 28, 2012. The Houston Family Arts Center received the Gem of a Theater Award for consistently providing superior theater in its own handsome theater, tucked away in a strip mall in northwest Houston. HFAC rents the nearby 456-seat Berry Center Theater twice a year for large musical productions. This year it outdid itself by commissioning and then producing Death by Design, a comedic mystery drama, from noted playwright Rob Urbinati and the result was a most entertaining success. HFAC also produced the world premiere of the musical Kissless and raised $144,000 to enter it in the prestigious New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF) and run it off-B’way for several weeks.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
