October 2012 NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Unlike last summer, this summer has seen excellent rainfall. Along with that comes an increased mosquito problem. NCCIA is currently paying for weekly spraying in the subdivision but mosquitoes still remain an issue. Just think what it would be like without spraying! There have been many reported cases of the West Nile virus in Harris County. The board has received increased complaints from homeowners about neighbors not maintaining pools. There really is not much we can do about that as our management company cannot go in someone’s backyard and cite them for lack of maintenance. I suggest that if you have an irresponsible neighbor that is not mowing their backyard or maintaining their pool, you call or send an email to the Harris County Public Health Department. Their phone number is 713439-6000 and www.hcphes.org is the website. We have found them to be very responsive to complaints and they have the ability to fine irresponsible homeowners and even take them to court. PLEASE do not report trivial matters because you happen to not like your neighbor, as that serves no purpose but if indeed there is a potential health department matter, first talk to the violator and if nothing is done, then by all means report the matter. If you ARE a homeowner and your pool is black, green or covered with slime, it’s probably time to correct the issue. A large container of Clorox bleach will do wonders and is very cheap!! Thanks to the efforts of our newest board member, Scott Murphy, we are upgrading our website. Please carefully read the article in this newsletter from Scott outlining the new changes.

Recent deed restriction reports indicate way too many homes being cited for lawn maintenance. Last year the excuse was no rain. This year it’s plenty of rain and lawns not being edged and mowed. One really needs to mow at least weekly to keep the lawn looking decent. We understand folks maybe on vacation and occasionally it will get long. However we are seeing the same roughly 100 homeowners that mow only when they get a letter. NCCIA would like to thank Martha Sieggreen of Signs Now on Fry Rd for giving us a good deal and rushing the signage and banners for our annual pool party. Thanks Martha!! The last newsletter contained an article regarding our recycling and solid waste program. We regret that there was one error. Our solid waste vendor picks up recycling materials on Tuesdays in Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. The pickup for Sections 7, 8 and 9 is on Fridays. We apologize for the confusion and urge all residents to recycle. NCCIA has been in communication with Harris County regarding street repair. It has been a number of years since we have seen any repairs done in NC. We certainly have some streets that are in need. Harris County promises to make repairs but we have not seen any yet. We urge residents to call or email Harris County Precinct 5 and ask that they take action. Let them know we will remember what they do or do not do come election time!! May everyone enjoy a nice fall season. Don Mach N C - CIA President and Legal Liaison

WEBSITE UPDATE The Nottingham Country Community Improvement Association is pleased to announce that we are migrating to a new website format. The new N.C.C.I.A. website will allow our community a more dynamic and interactive website experience. One of the key features is an even more secure website. All of the “existing” email list subscribers have been setup with new “Member” accounts. To access the full resources of the new N.C.C.I.A. Website, residents will need to visit www.nottinghamcountry.org - select “Login,” then select “Not a member yet?” Complete the information fields and select, “Register” located at the bottom of the page. Some of the new Website features include: • Calendar (under Community on the top menu) is now updated with upcoming events. • Newsletter articles are now accessible from pull-downs on the top menu. • Lost Pets section now allows members to upload their own photos of their pets and post a message - posting still requires “authorization” prior to becoming visible to the other members. • Security Alerts or other announcements can / will be displayed on the Home page in a scrolling banner. Some Upcoming Website Features: • Discussion Groups • Member Classifieds • Pay Dues Online • Recipes • Suggestion Box • Reservation System for Events • Local Weather • Upcoming Events • Photo Galleries • Local Services Contact Information

It is our hope that the residents will find the information on the website site helpful and informative. Residents can also find useful information about the N.C.C.I.A., including: meeting minutes, policies, forms, social events, links to neighborhood resources and more. Heavy Trash Day

Saturday - October 13 th From 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM there will be heavy trash pickup in the Nottingham Elementary School (Kingsland and Rennie) back parking lot. This is our fall pickup and another one will not be scheduled until next spring. This is for heavy trash items only. There will be personnel onsite to assist in unloading. Waste oil, paint, tires and other chemicals considered environmentally hazard will not be accepted. This is an excellent time to clean out the garage, etc. and have it hauled off for free. In driving around the subdivision and seeing some of the open garages and driveways, it would appear there are a number of homeowners that should seriously consider cleaning up their property and this would be an excellent time to do so. This is only for residents of Nottingham Country Sections 1 thru 9. NCCIA Board of Directors

We have seen an increase of late. Many of the new ones have been long time past due with NCCIA and obviously their mortgage holders. Right now mortgage companies are behind in the foreclosure process, so we may continue to see an increase for a few months. The good news is that these typically are selling very quickly.

CY-FAIR PLUMBING

Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure.

Be Careful What You Mail or Send thru Your Computer The area is experiencing some theft of outgoing mail from individual mailboxes in front of homes. What the thieves are looking for are checks written to pay bills or a piece of outgoing mail that may have financial information. If you are going to pay bills by mail send them from a secure postal box or drop them in your outgoing office mail. This has been a problem for years but the scam seems to be increasing. In addition to the stealing from your mailbox, there has been a major increase in computer email from banks requesting financial information that the thief can use to access your accounts. Don’t put checks in your mail box or respond to computer request you can’t verify first. Bob Wills, NCCIA Director

NCCIA WebSite Report - AUGUST 2012 I’m sure you’ve noticed that we have a new site. By the time you read this, our new website is up and running. All residents who had previously signed up to receive our timely email alerts, known as E-blasts, are now charter “members” on the Nottingham Country website (nottinghamcountry.org). Though our website will be visible to the general public - anywhere in the world, since it is the “world wide web” - many of the features on our site will be members only. This is to provide more privacy to our residents. If you post a message on our site with private information, such as your phone number, you can be relatively secure in that this information is only visible to Nottingham Country residents. This, of course, does not prevent one of our residents from publishing or “sharing” your information, so discretion is always a good practice - it is always good practice to not share your private information on any website.

I am committed to helping you sell, buy or lease in the West Houston area, and believe communication, courtesy and professionalism are key to a successful partnership between Realtor and Client. Contact me today for your real estate needs!

How to address the Board directly The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL A SPECIAL THANK YOU LETTER TO THE TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL BAND Taylor High School Band and Participants,   My husband and I were so pleased to see how dedicated these young men and women were to get up so early on a sunny, bright Saturday morning to march down our streets in Nottingham. Philip and I never had children, but we have participated in the school district for over 23 years.   The recognition of long hours these young men and women endured for practice in order to participate in such a live event. It truly appeared to be well conducted and arranged. What an amazing treat we were awoken to. Regardless, if someone was able to hear or not hear the music, it was certainly felt.   We enjoyed our alarm that morning; to hear the sounds of drums in the distance, the feeling the vibration through our walls. The sound and vibration of marching feet in formation with instruments down our neighborhood. Neighbors were dashing out of their homes to this great attraction. Some taking pictures and video of this great spectacular event. And let’s not forget the participation of the EMS and Fire Department vehicles and the driver of that huge rig was such a thrill to see. And of course to all the parents, escorts, teachers and affiliates to help make all this happen for our community.   Close your eyes; listen or feel the music, it will take you to many places without ever packing a bag. So, play on and don’t ever stop the music!   Thank you so very much for sharing your enjoyment of music with us all.    Philip and Tisha Matticks

Looking for a cheap, easy, fast, funny costume this Halloween? Try one of these ideas, sure to be a hit when trick-or-treating or at parties. • Dress up as you normally do. If someone asks what you are, tell them you’re a werewolf. If they ask why you have no hair or fangs, explain that it’s not a full moon. • Get a bag of white balloons and a box. Put the box over your head and cut out holes for your arms. Paint the box a bright color and the word “soap” across it. Then tape the bubbles to the top of the box around your shoulders and head. • Tape a bunch of green or purple balloons all over yourself (wear green or brown clothing underneath). Go as a bunch of grapes. • Throw a white sheet over your head and cut a hole for your head to come through. Wear a yellow hat and paint your face yellow with make up. Go as a fried egg. • Get a box and paint it white. Make holes for your head and arms. Paint or draw black spots on it and go as a die. If you have a partner, make two and go as a pair of dice. • Get some yellow yarn and brown pom-poms. Glue them all over an old sweat suit. Put an old colander over your head as a hat. Go as spaghetti and meat balls. • Wear a clown costume top and paint your face. Get a large box and paint it a bright color. Make a hole for your waist and put it on as if the bottom of a skirt. Go as a jack-in-the-box.

OCTOBER GARDENING

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or oldpanty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures aregoing to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Congregation Or Ami Great Comedy Night

As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills. The October 13 performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. Premium seating and group tables are available. For additional information, please check online at www.oramihouston.org or call 713-334-4300. th

Texas is noted for its Hospitality Room, but this year was even bigger and better than ever. Highlights of the food served included Bob Boyett’s delicious special recipe chile to accompany Texas tamales and brisket to rival any of the barbeque available in the Austin area, cooked in advance by Van Poorman of the Katy Lodge. Texas boasted its special crew of “cowboy” greeters from the Panwest District (North West Texas area) that added a special Texas flair and flavor to already obvious “true Texas hospitality.” Each state provides a hospitality room, which keeps everyone busy outside of business time. Getting to meet and visit with other Elks from so many parts of our nation is exciting and rewarding. Many have state and local lodge pins to trade, which leaves you with a reminder of special times spent with special people.

Epsilon Mu The Epsilon Mu chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa will be sponsoring membership meetings from September to December 2012 in Katy ISD schools. Interested women teachers who have been actively involved in education for 2 years and have been recommended by an Alpha Delta Kappa teacher are eligible for membership. Elizabeth Stelevich, President of the Epsilon Mu chapter, recently attended the Texas State Convention in Corpus Christi where teachers from all over the state met to select new officers. Cindy Bigham, from League City, will serve as the Texas State President for the next biennium. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary sorority for women educators. Membership, which is honorary and based on peer recognition, provides a wealth of opportunities for leadership development and networking through workshops, training sessions, conferences and conventions. But, perhaps the greatest opportunity Alpha Delta Kappa provides is the opportunity to make a difference. Around the world, Alpha Delta Kappa members combine their energies and talents to enrich their lives and the lives of others through thousands of heartwarming, community-based altruistic projects. More than 38,000 members in more than 1,400 chapters around the world have discovered the many opportunities provided by membership in Alpha Delta Kappa. Texas is divided into 16 districts and the Katy ISD is proud to have Epsilon Mu Chapter representing our women educators. Locally, the chapter has sponsored scholarships for graduating seniors organized Bingo Games at nursing homes and collected socks for the residents, provided materials for the Threads of Love group to create blankets for the NICU nurseries in our local hospitals, adopted Families at Christmas, provided funds for a SMILE TRAIN surgery, Katy Christian Ministries, TARC and the American Heart Association. Recently, members adopted the Krause Center as their Holiday Project and then helped fund the Spring Prom. Internationally, the group raises funds for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the St. Jude Hospital for Research. More information can be obtained on the www.alphadeltakappa. org website or by contacting Mrs. Stelevich at aestel@comcast.net
