Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpil lars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earliergerminating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

In order to make our fundraiser as successful as possible, we are looking to the good neighbors of our Community for their support. There are many ways in which you can contribute to the Pink Tie Affair as either a sponsor or a donor. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the InternaRevenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all. We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at or, our website. We hope to have your support and to see you there!

Labor Day Facts and Stats • 153.2 Million - number of Americans (over 16 years) in the labor force as of July 2011, that number is down 1.2 million from Labor Day 2010. • 12% of American workers belonged to a labor union in 2009. • 84.7% of full time workers have health insurance. • 2.2 Million more females than males are in management positions as of 2009. • Registered Nurse - occupation expected to add the most positions in the next 10 years. • 25 minutes - average time for the commute to work. • 5.9 Million people worked from home in 2009. • Why not wear white after Labor Day? According to historians, it may be symbolic for those wealthy enough to leave the city for a summer vacation in which the “uniform” of choice was breezy and white - no white after Labor Day because they have to go back to their drab work/city clothes.

September 27th - VIPS General Meeting - 9:30 AM to 12 PM, Berry Center. Open to all CFISD school staff, volunteers, parents and community members. Get the latest information on what is happening in CFISD. How to register for training: With the exception of Hearing and Vision Certification, register for training by emailing (PIE office). Provide your name and the name of the training you wish to attend. Registration is required to guarantee a seat and training materials. Adults only please.

CFISD GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS Cy Fair ISD continues to be known for its winning combination of district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers, each contributing to the success of CFISD students and schools, with volunteers being a huge factor in this equation. Many schools do not have the volunteer base to fill the needs of students and staff; fortunately, CFISD Global Volunteers are willing to reach out, lend a helping hand and get the job done. Global Volunteer opportunities throughout the year are widespread, ranging from vision and hearing screening, mentoring, tutoring, Junior Achievement and other instructional presentations. Whatever your talent may be, there is a niche for you. If you are not the parent, legal guardian or grandparent of a student enrolled in the school at which you would like to volunteer, State law requires certain procedures in order the ensure the safety of all students. These steps are encompassed by the CFISD Global Volunteer program.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
