WEST MEMORIAL FALL 2012

We can review past statements. We all know that, individually, we have different situations in our lives at different times. We can only reflect on just so much at one time. Our priorities need to be what we choose to handle first. We know there are wise choices that can help us do what is best. Visit the website, send us your suggestions and come to the Homeowners meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month. We are adjusting to new regulations, new challenges and dealing with our own needs. Most of it is good but don’t let any of it stop us from what we need. Our home prices and expenses are attached to what other’s perceived to call value. Insurance, taxes and personal expenses is what we should be focused on. I hear many of the arguments on Homeowner Associations and their Directors. I remember not long ago talking against letters from a Management Company. But instead of getting mad, I simply chose to look into it more. What we need is your input, your assistance and your courage to step up with us. It would be rewarding in self-learning. Good decisions are not intended to be an expense but a saving. Ask the question: “How can I help?” and decide where you fit in. Finally take steps for implementing your help plan. Talk, stay active and remember clean up your signs from the Neighborhood.

DIRECTORS ELECTION RESULTS: THANK YOU FOR BRINGING YOUR PROXIES

Harry Woodstrum has returned to the Board and was quickly enlisted to lead your Directors President - Harry Woodstrum Vice-President - Pat Leo Treasurer - James Newell Secretary - Charles Waldie Jr. Director - Lorraine Day Director - Carl Chaney Director - Kenneth Cooke Next May will come fast so brush up on talents and get nominated to be on the Board, bring your proxies or give them to a trusted neighbor and stay in the loop on what is happening in your neighborhood. It is important!

BEHIND THE SCENE INSIGHT

The inspector is hired by the Management Company and is sent out to collect data. Your Directors get those letters in the mail just like you. The only difference is that we have to correct it and then face our fellow Directors afterward. It makes us accountable to your cause and a reminder that no one should be “above the Law.”

DEED RESTRICTIONS

The purpose of Deed Restrictions in your neighborhood is to protect and enhance property values. They set guidelines for initial construction, perpetual maintenance and property use. As residents agree to abide by the majority view; the style and standards of a community are established and everyone benefits. For your information, restrictions are written by the developer before the first home is constructed and the Association is then charged with the on-going responsibility of enforcing them. They can be changed, but a very large percentage vote of homeowners is required to do so. Please let us know if you see a problem in the neighborhood. If you receive a deed restriction letter, please email Cory Freeman at cfreeman@scsmgmt.com or telephone 281-500-7114.

CRAZY DAYS OF 5TH GRADE an Iggy the Iguana Book Written by Melissa M. Williams

ble aila ! v A ow N

Crazy Days of 5th Grade is the 3rd book in the Iggy the Iguana chapter book series for children which focuses on themes of the upper elementary classroom, including making new friends, positive changes in learning styles and respect for others. When Iggy’s new teacher, Mr. Gruff the goat, continues to eat his homework, he realizes his old ways of studying are over. It will take the mind of a creative genius and a lot of make-believe to revitalize Iggy’s concentration in class. What started off as a lonely, boring school year missing his best friend Snap Shell the turtle, turns into a suspenseful ride that includes a strange encounter with a crab and an unexpected trip to the hospital. With the help of his friends and his little sister’s stuffed animals, Iggy discovers a hidden talent proving what he once considered a problem was really a gift in disguise.

3 TIME WORLD CHAMPION AMERICAN TAEKWONDO ASSOCIATION

KATY REBELS GIRLS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

The 8th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco Team took 1st place in the June 30-July 1, 2012 Primetime tournament in Humble, TX. The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The zone defense continued to frustrate opponents and the extra effort to complete every hustle play led to opportunities that made the difference in the games. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER COMPANY 2012-2013 SEASON

Kimberly AKimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

CONGREGATION OR AMI GREAT COMEDY NIGHT - ROSS BENNETT

As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills. The October 13 performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. Premium seating and group tables are available. For additional information, please check online at www.oramihouston.org or call 713-334-4300. th
