MONTHLY HOA MEETINGS Make sure you know what is happening in the Pin Oak Village HOA meetings by attending. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the second Wednesday of each month. Be there and join these directors each month and be informed of money they are spending.

CLUBHOUSE RENTALS Martha Baxter is in charge of the clubhouse rentals. Pool rentals are still done through Michelle at Sweetwater Pool Company. There are still lots of good dates available for free clubhouse use. We would like to remind all residents that the clubhouse is for Members Only and must be current on all fees. Residents are limited to two free uses per year. There is a $100 DEPOSIT REQUIRED THAT WILL BE REFUNDED, IF THE CLUBHOUSE IS KEPT CLEAN. The clubhouse is also being reserved for possible holiday party use by the Board, for the benefit of Pin Oak Village residents. These parties will be scheduled soon, so watch for upcoming events at our website, www.pinoakvillagekaty.com. To schedule lifeguards for any pool party, contact Michelle with Sweetwater pools at 281-300-6077. There is an additional form for Pool Rental, as well as cost, that must be filled out and paid prior to scheduling lifeguards. No pool party can be had without the approval of Sweetwater and at least one additional guard. Feel free to contact Martha at 281-392-8007. Martha’s address is 24606 Mt. Auburn Drive. Martha’s email address is as follows: rbaxter724@aol.com. Due to the many clubs and church groups that have reserved weekly dates being sought for by residents, the preference for use will be given to residents needs over weekly functions. Jeff will do his best to accommodate both weekly reservations and resident’s use.

STREETLIGHTS The MUD taxes the residents pay help pay for the streetlights whether they work or not. If a streetlight is out or not working properly, please call 713207-2222 and report the problem. Each pole has a number on it and you will need to give this number to the operator as well as the names of the closest streets. Last year we had a couple of lights out and the result was vandalism to several mailboxes. We need all lights working to keep our neighborhood safe. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us the cost of these lights.

TRASH PICKUP UPDATE The correct contact for trash pickup for Pin Oak village is as follows: Waste Corporation of Texas (WCA) 281-368-8397. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us the cost of trash pickup. Our MUD directors are saving us thousands of dollars by paying for the lights and trash each month.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

SEPTEMBER……DID YOU KNOW? • Sapphire is the birthstone? Characteristic is Clear Thinking? Flower is Morning Glory? • German troops invaded Poland, starting World War II in Europe on September 1, 1939. • First Labor Day celebrated as a legal public holiday on September 3, 1894. • Great Britain signed Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War in America on September 3, 1783. • Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the attack on Fort McHenry on September 14, 1814. • President McKinley died in Buffalo, N.Y., of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin on Sept 6, 1901. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him on September 14, 1901. • The Soviet space probe Luna 2 became the first manmade object to reach the moon as it crashed onto the lunar surface on September 14, 1959. • British Army became the first to use military tanks on September 15, 1916. • Pilgrims sailed from England in the Mayflower on September 16, 1620. • President James A. Garfield died of assassin’s shot on September 19,1881. • Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale put to death as a spy by British on September 22, 1776. • President Abraham Lincoln issued preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. • “Publick Occurrences,” the first American newspaper, appeared in Boston on September 25, 1690. • Some famous people in history born in September: Marcus Whitman, Jesse James, J. P. Morgan, Jr., Queen Elizabeth I of England, Robert A. Taft, William Sydney Porter (writer O. Henry), Walter Reed, William Howard Taft, John Marshall, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T. S. Eliot, George Gershwin and Samuel Adams. • California was admitted as part of the United States.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

to children and their families, including toys, games and puzzles. Most importantly - librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests. A library card becomes even more valuable when someone wants to access many of the library’s online databases from home. The cost of subscribing to these databases as an individual would make them unaffordable to many people, but a library card levels the playing field by making them available to everyone free - as long as you have a library card. Since a library card is free, how can parents afford not to give their children such a valuable tool?

2012-2013 CRITERIA FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. Go to www.squaremeals.com to view a copy of the policy. Children living in households whose income are at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside.
The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 - 2013 application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the households and their Gross Monthly Income. For any questions, call the Katy ISD Nutrition Department office at 281-396-6240.  Applications are available online, at any district school and at the food service office. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year, which started on August 15, 2012. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility. Application information may be verified by school officials at any time during the school year.

The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.
