At its best, the very word “evangelism” has a negative connotation and at its worst is something we refuse to be associated with. Over the next few days as we flesh out Exponential’s 2014 theme, Seek + Save, we’re focusing on five areas: ReThinking Evangelism, ReThinking Outreach, ReThinking Witness, ReThinking Preaching, and ReThinking the Commission. The church growth and seeker movements of a previous generation brought energy to the priority of evangelism but lessened the emphasis on discipleship. The more contemporary conversation around the mission of the church has elevated the priority of discipleship as the main concern of the church with less talk about evangelism. As a result, we’ve created a false dichotomy between evangelism and discipleship. We want to rethink these areas inherent to Jesus’ core mission on earth (Luke 19:10)—to seek and

WELCOME TO EXPONENTIAL 2014!

save—and how we can join Him in that mission. Check out our main session themes:

Sessions 1 & 2: ReThinking Evangelism We’ll seek to understand evangelism as a natural part of the discipleship journey. Sessions 3 & 4: ReThinking Outreach We want to challenge churches to do evangelism as a community of believers with our words and deeds. Sessions 5 & 6: ReThinking Witness We’ll exhort and equip churches to teach their people to listen and share their story.

Sessions 7 & 8: ReThinking Preaching We’ll encourage churches to redeem preaching as good news. Sessions 9 & 10: ReThinking the Commission We want to accelerate movements by inspiring and commissioning church planters. In addition to your experience in our main sessions, Exponential offers a variety of pre-conference intensives, more than 100 workshops and niched conversations to explore. My hope and prayer is that you will join us as we seek to join Jesus in His mission to seek and save. Dave Ferguson Exponential President

JESUS’ STRATEGY FOR REACHING THE WORLD ROBERT COLEMAN INTERVIEW BY

LINDY LOWRY

Full article and many more resources available at: m.exponential.org

ReThinking Evangelism

27

Robert Coleman – Conference Speaker

RETHINKING EVANGELISM In this thought-provoking and inspiring in-depth conversation with venerable voice and GordonConwell Theological Seminary Evangelism Professor Robert Coleman (author of the watershed titles The Master Plan of Evangelism and The Master Plan of Discipleship), Coleman candidly shares his awakening to the symbiotic relationship of evangelism and discipleship. Coleman joins us again as a speaker for Exponential 2014.

Discipling is the fabric out of which Jesus’ evangelism evolved. Dr. Coleman, what’s your definition of evangelism and discipleship? Well, they flow together. An evangelist will make known the Good News. The Good News is Christ. Discipleship is to follow Christ and continue to learn Him. The word “disciple” translates “learner,” as in the sense of an apprentice. So followers of Christ inevitably become disciple makers or evangelists. I don’t see that we need to labor the distinctions between the two except to recognize we’re talking about two realities. Both flow together in a personal commitment. The objective of evangelism is to make disciples.

When did you awaken to the symbiotic relationship of evangelism and discipleship? When I began teaching evangelism at Asbury College, I began to ask the question: I can see how Jesus is personally leading people to know Him and the Kingdom. But what’s His strategy for reaching the world? That’s what He came to do. And then it dawned on me. His strategy is in making disciples who will replicate what He’s doing with them. When I began to see that discipling was the fabric out of which Jesus’ evangelism evolved, it revolutionized my understanding of ministry. And

I began to try to find ways to do it. I remember the next morning in class, I told my students, “I will be here early in the morning at 6 o’clock. If anyone wants to come and pray with me and study the Bible together, you are welcome.” That started over 50 years ago, and I have been doing that in one way or another ever since. As I have been doing this, I’ve learned more and more about how evangelism is perpetuated through discipling... and where there is true discipling, evangelism is assured. If you are truly doing evangelism, you will take care of those people that you bring to Christ. You will not turn them out into the world without someone to lead them. We’ve got to unite these two, and that’s what I have been trying to do.

What are the consequences of separating evangelism and discipleship? When you start to separate the two, you become departmentalized so that you miss the reason behind it. If evangelism is only making known the gospel and you don’t see the ultimate objective, then you really do not assure any reproduction of what has been taught. The very fact that we come to Christ implies that we will follow Him. So we become followers, disciples. You don’t have to be a theologian to read the gospels and realize why He preached, why He healed. He focused His ministry on making disciples, those who would catch His heartbeat and His vision and then go forth and reproduce what they learned.

Vince Antonucci - Conference Speaker

7 CLUES T0 TELLING A GOOD STORY TO THE UNCONVINCED VINCE ANTONUCCI

This article is based on the FREE eBook Preaching to the Unconvinced by Vince Antonucci. Download the eBook at: exponential.org

RETHINKING PREACHING How do you teach the Bible to people who don’t believe the Bible and may not be very interested in what the Bible has to say? You tell stories. Stories are powerful. It’s why we love to watch movies and TV, and read novels. When you teach propositional truth, you set me up to debate with you. I’m going to have objections. But when you tell me a story, you set me up to find myself in the story. I can’t help it.

Jesus knew this. It’s why He taught with stories. Matt. 13:34: “Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; He did not say anything to them without using a parable.” Becoming a better storyteller So how do we get good at telling stories? Over the years, I’ve recognized the importance of telling good stories— and getting better at telling them. Below are some things I’ve learned about telling a compelling story. 1. Add lots of detail. Details make the story come alive. Don’t tell me that Jimmy went to his grandmother’s house. Give me the sights, smells, sounds and feelings. The details make you feel like you’re there. 2. Practice telling the story. I always practice stories before I tell them in a sermon. Each time you tell the story, you’ll get better at feeling the flow of it and finding the humor in it. I try to

practice telling the story throughout the course of my daily life. Anytime I have an opportunity, I’m telling people the story, and each time I do it better. 3. Be an observer of your life. For those who speak every week, having enough stories can be difficult. So I watch my life. As things happen, I’m always thinking, would this be an interesting story? Would this be funny to other people? What truth does this illustrate? If I didn’t actively think this way, I would miss some great material. 4. Engage with culture. I watch movies and TV shows, listen to other sermons and read books and magazines. And as I do, I’m looking for interesting or funny or beautiful or compelling stories that can illustrate truth and drive home the message.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LEAD A ‘QUESTIONABLE’ LIFE? BY MICHAEL FROST

ReThinking The Commission

45

Michael Frost – Conference Speaker

RETHINKING THE COMMISSION Since the beginning of the Christian movement, eating has been a central Christian practice. And not only eating sacramentally, as in the Eucharist, but eating missionally as a way to express love to all. In every culture, the invitation to share a table is a profoundly meaningful one. The table is the great equalizer in relationships. When we eat together, we discover the inherent humanity of all people. We share stories. And hopes. And fears. And disappointments. People open up to each other. And we can open up to them to share the same things, including our faith in Jesus.

When we eat together, we discover the inherent humanity of all people. We share stories. And hopes. And fears. Of course, inviting well-mannered Christian folks into your home is easy. But what about inviting unbelievers or the poor to our table? We see it in Jesus’ attendance at a meal at the home of the tax collector Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). His communion with the sinful tax collector led to repentance and conversion. Likewise, we should be as prepared to eat with sinners as a habitual missional practice. As believers, one of our primary concerns should be the arousal of curiosity among unbelievers leading to questions and faith sharing.

Article excerpted from

I remember a Southern Baptist minister in Portland who told me that his neighbor claimed to make the best margaritas in all of Oregon and who regularly hosted margarita-and-poker nights in his garage. All the men from the neighborhood attended, but the Baptist pastor never accepted an invitation to join them, believing this was a strong witness to his faith. When I heard this, I asked him how many times his neighbor had asked him any questions about his faith in Christ. “Never,” he said. Then I asked how often he’d ever shared anything of his faith with him, and again the answer was “never.” You see, it’s not “questionable” when a Baptist minister refuses to attend a margarita-and-poker night. It’s expected. I challenged him to accept the next invitation he received, and he took me up on it. The neighbor nearly fell over in shock.

ReThinking Preaching

51

Andy Stanley – Conference Speaker

RETHINKING PREACHING The imperatives of the New Testament are addressed to Christians. Consequently, Christians are accountable to each other for how they live. But for reasons unbeknownst to me, Christians love to judge the behavior of nonChristians. What makes this doubly perplexing is that the apostle Paul addresses this issue directly in 1 Cor. 5:12-13 (…Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside” (1 Cor. 5:12–13). There you have it. But historically, the church has been way better at policing the behavior of outsiders than it has been at policing its own. That’s unfortunate. And unnecessary. Few things discredit the church more in the minds of unbelievers than when it holds them accountable to a standard they never acknowledged to begin with.

authors expected of believers and what is expected of nonbelievers. In short, give non-Christians an out. I’m very intentional about this when I preach. I make statements like, “If you aren’t a Christian, you are off the hook today.” Or, “If you aren’t a follower of Jesus, then you are not accountable for what we are about to read. You get a pass.” On most weekends, non-Christians are not your target audience. They are welcome guests. Just as we don’t expect guests in our homes to clear the table after dinner and serve the coffee, so there are things we shouldn’t expect nonbelievers to do while visiting our churches. And we need to tell ’em. If you do let them off the hook, you might be surprised at the response. My experience is that when you give non-Christians an out, they respond by leaning in. Especially if you invite them rather than expect them. There’s a big

My experience is that when you give non-Christians an out, they respond by leaning in. “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders … Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Col. 4:5–6).

Taken from Deep and Wide by Andy Stanley. Zondervan 2012. www.zondervan.com

Like you, I’ve heard way too many messages addressed at nonbelievers that were full of salt seasoned with grace. That’s part of the reason so many unchurched people are just that: unchurched. I think we would be wise to extend Paul’s advice to our preaching. When addressing unbelievers, it should be all grace with just a pinch of salt. To do that, we must distinguish between what the biblical

difference between being expected to do something and being invited to try something. We naturally push back when pushed. But we don’t generally push back on an invitation.

THE CHURCH THAT SEEKS AND SAVES

This article was excerpted and adapted from the new FREE eBook, Evangelism or Discipleship: Can They Work Together Effectively? by Bobby Harrington and Bill Hull. Download at: exponential.org

BOBBY HARRINGTON AND BILL HULL

RETHINKING EVANGELISM Over decades of doing and leading ministry in the local church, we both agree that the church’s most difficult problem is convincing its citizens that who they are and what they do outside of church services is the real work of God. So how do we navigate this challenge and produce churches of disciples who make disciples? Thankfully, we have a detailed description of the church of Ephesus. By the time Paul settled down for three years in Ephesus, he had

developed a well-defined orthodoxy (beliefs) and orthopraxis (practice). You could even call Ephesus the disciple-making church. That’s why we rely on Paul’s more highly developed theology found in his letter to the Ephesians, especially his teaching on the heart of the leader’s task and his practical responsibility. If you want to know how to develop a church that seeks and saves, read Eph. 4:11-16. The text abounds with core principles that when practiced can be revolutionary: Gifted leaders are responsible to equip people for their work. The gifted leaders referenced in the text are apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. All of these roles are needed to match the diversity of gifts that God has given His people. The saints need the apostles’ impulse to press forward; the courage and clarity of the prophet; the desire to tell the story of the evangelist; the care and attention of the pastor; and the principles and knowledge of the

teacher. Multi-dimensional gifted leaders are needed to prepare or “coach” a diverse group of people. God’s people are the saints. This includes all members. The ordinary common believer—not the clergy or religious professional (often the one gifted to train)—is at the center of this instruction in verse 12. And by verse 16, it’s obvious that everyone is to be included in the process—no exceptions. The first step is for the church to be built up. Paul says that the equipping process must be effective. If it isn’t, and the church begins seeking and saving others without the proper foundation, the church will collapse like a house of cards. Bringing new people into a dysfunctional environment is disastrous. This equipping continues until the saints, individually and corporately, meet the standard of Christlikeness.

RETHINKING WITNESS Every church leader has defining moments in his or her ministry. I remember mine. It was actually a story someone told me about Billy Graham, but I’ll never forget hearing

said, “I’ll show you,” and led them to the speakers’ green room. There, he pointed to a damp spot on the floor and said, “Here is where Dr. Graham weeps in prayer over souls before the service begins.” That wasn’t hard for me to believe. I remember hearing Billy Graham say, “… tears shed for others is a sign of strength.”

Something significant was accomplished in the spiritual realm. That kicked off a church planting movement that continues to this day. God responds to Spirit-led, earnest prayers for the lost.

it. To be honest, I’m not even certain if it’s completely accurate, but this story clearly captures the essence of Dr. Graham’s approach to evangelism. Backstage at a Billy Graham crusade, some of the local pastors asked one of the crusade organizers, “What is the source of Billy’s effectiveness?” The organizer looked at them and

When I first wanted to start planting churches, I felt the Lord ask me, “Larry are you willing to fast for 40 days and pray before you plant?” I was used to fasting a day or two, but 40 days? I futilely tried to rationalize the Spirit’s voice away, but I really wanted to plant churches to reach lost people. So I finally promised God a 40-day fast. It was brutally wonderful. My spiritual hat is off to those who do this yearly. Once in a lifetime was enough for

Rich Gorman – Conference Speaker

RETHINKING OUTREACH In this interview with Exponential Director Todd Wilson, Community Christian Church Campus Pastor Rich Gorman shares what he and his wife, Dori, have learned about engaging a community from ground zero.

The reality is God has prepared the work, and He just wants you to step into it. When you pursue Him, He’ll show you what that is. Rich, tell us how you and Dori got started from ground zero. It was incredibly confusing at first. In retrospect, it was really a blessing, But at the time, it was kind of scary. My wife and I moved in, and we didn’t know anybody. We didn’t come in with a team of people. It was just the two of us, and so it was very much like a parachute drop. I remember going running one January morning and came back just overwhelmed with confusion, not knowing what to do. I just came to the conclusion that God was saying, “You need to just pray, be immersed in Scripture and just engage in the life of this neighborhood, and I’m going to lead the way.” And so we quickly came on the 5 P’s as a way to understand what God is doing in the neighborhood, how He set up the neighborhood and how He’s leading us to engage in the neighborhood.

Briefly tell us about the 5 P’s. In any city, any village, any workplace, these dynamics exist. Here’s an overview: Power: In every city or neighborhood, there are gatekeepers who hold great influence. In a lot of places it’s city government at the most local level, but also HOA’s, condo associations, school boards. They are the power brokers, and that’s a very significant dynamic in the community.

Pennies: That “P” is just the local economy. It’s how people make their money, how people are affected by the local economy. It can be any kind of industry. But the economic piece of the community is a vital part of that picture. Parties: That’s just things that people celebrate, what they love to do. It could be anything from football to food to art. Every community celebrates something. Pain. That’s the brokenness, poverty, the homelessness, failing schools, whatever it is. I’m sure that there’s an array of pain areas, pain points in each community. Person of Peace: That’s really the gatekeeper to the whole thing. In each of these areas, God will bring a Person of Peace that will invite you into these arenas to help you get to know them and develop relationships to see His kingdom flourish.

What were some of the lessons you learned the hard way? I think we assumed too much coming in. I think all church planters come in with the best of intentions. We want to see our communities transformed, to see lives transformed, to see God’s glory on display for everyone to see. But I think a lot of us come up with a lot of ideas of what it’s going to look like and what we’re going to do before we ever step in. We did that, and there’s something really beautiful about that. But what happens is that you can end up missing it. You can come up with all of your models and all your approaches before you ever step in and then look back three years down the road and realized you missed what God had prepared for you.

FINDING YOUR PERSON OF PEACE ALEX ABSALOM

ReThinking Witness

91

Alex Absalom – Conference Speaker

RETHINKING WITNESS Since 2010, I’ve served as the leader of missional innovation at RiverTree Church in Northeast Ohio. As part of a team working to help the church move further down the missional path, one of the first things we taught was this missional strategy called Person of Peace. It is the strategy Jesus gives to help us naturally and easily identify where we are called to go. I believe that many disciples can be released to go out as witnesses simply by implementing this basic strategy. The Person of Peace concept contains within it the essence of missional DNA. Lived out in practice, finding your Person of Peace accelerates your mission.

Lived out in practice, finding your Person of Peace accelerates your mission. So how do you find your Person of Peace? Below are five characteristics I’ve found quite helpful. I want to stress that your Person of Peace is not a Christian (this is about reaching lost people who won’t otherwise be touched by the Gospel), yet is someone who:

1. Welcomes you. This article is an excerpt from Alex Absalom’s new eBook, The Viral Gospel: How Finding Your Person of Peace Accelerates Your Mission. To read the full eBook, download it for FREE at: exponential.org

2. Receives you (and thus, probably unknowingly at first, receives Jesus in you). 3. Serves you. 4. You intentionally invest in. 5. Operates as a gatekeeper, opening relational doorways into their network of relationships.

Part of the liberating factor for us as Christians is that the Person of Peace only works properly with those who are willing, so it is the very opposite of manipulation. We taught this repeatedly to the men and women at RiverTree who would become the leaders of the first generation of missional communities. We kept bringing them back to the challenge of this question: “Who are you called to love intentionally?” If the answer is a particular community (e.g., bikers, high school students, families with preschoolers), then probably that context will be where your Person of Peace is, since clearly you feel called to that community. As a family, we have lived this process. Originally from England, in 2007 God called us as missionaries to the United States. Our journey of faith saw us landing in Oklahoma City, finding ourselves in a new country where we had no favor, knew hardly anyone and barely understood the culture—or even the accent! So Hannah and I did what we always do: We prayed and asked God to show us our Person of Peace. This time, it was a family who lived in our neighborhood. They were out walking past our house when I happened to be doing yard work. A first conversation ensued, and before I knew it our family had been invited for dinner, and our new friends were busy serving us with gusto. They opened up a whole network of relationships for us in our neighborhood. These various households became our extended family—adopting us foreigners at all the holidays, doing life together,

WHAT WE REPENT INTO JOHN TETER

This article is excerpted and adapted from the Exponential FREE eBook What We Repent Into: 5 Things Every New Believer Must Do by John Teter. Download it here: exponential.org

RETHINKING EVANGELISM When God’s Spirit moved at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit appeared as tongues of fire. That is truly astonishing. The Apostle Peter’s sermon brought conviction and commitment to more than 3,000 people. But might I be so bold as to say that these spiritual encounters do not include the most miraculous development of all?

possibly cause them to make such a dramatic life change?

their regular teaching times and Peter began speaking?

I believe the answer is that we all do amazing things when we fall in love. The first converts fell in love with God and with each other. They found what they had been searching for all their lives. The new life of Jesus always demands a new lifestyle. And this new lifestyle centered on five areas of life the church repented into. For this article, I focus on three of these key areas.

Like the first converts at Pentecost, our new Christians must be taught God’s Word. And they must not only learn, but also apply and practically live out God’s Word—tasting and seeing that the Lord is good, so that their faith will be strong and their lives will bear fruit. The church began with devotion to God’s Word.

Like the first converts, our new Christians must be taught God’s Word and to practically live it out.

The 3,000 people who responded to the gospel did not return home. Instead, they encouraged their loved ones to come and be a part of God’s great outpouring. The church began with pilgrims who stayed in Jerusalem. What could

The new life brings about a hunger for God’s Word. New disciples must be taught how to listen to, study and live out Scripture. When the new converts entered into the daily life of the Jerusalem church, they knew very little Scripture. The church was devoted to fellowship. Some 3,000 new brothers and sisters in Christ began to get to know one another. The church began with a group of people who truly enjoyed being together. They made time for relationships and prioritized their new life together.

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you … .” 2 Tim. 1:6 NIV

EXPONENTIAL 2015 THEME TERRI SALIBA He knew he was on death row. He knew he had little time left to say the things he desperately wanted to tell those he loved. From a cold, dark cell in Rome, Paul penned his last letter to this young man from Lystra that he had mentored since his second

days and thinking hard about what it means to “fan into flame the gift of God.” Like Timothy, inside every follower of Jesus is the spark of multiplication. When that spark is “fanned into a flame,” it can ignite a multiplication movement powerful enough to accomplish the mission of Jesus. But it takes friction—the quick strike of the match against a rough surface—to start the process of turning a spark into a flame and ultimately a raging fire. Do you believe that every follower has a gift meant to be multiplied in

Knowing that each Christ follower has the potential to ignite a multiplication movement shapes our core values, priorities and decision making. missionary journey. The urgency and passion are almost tangible as he exhorts Timothy:

others’ lives? Do you believe that in every believer lies the heart of a movement for God?

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline” (2 Tim. 1: 6-7).

Knowing that each Christ follower has the potential to ignite a multiplication movement shapes our core values, priorities and decision making. The commitment to multiply now rather than “later, when we can afford it” is similar to the friction of striking the match. With that commitment come hard, seemingly foolish decisions— delaying a building campaign, releasing a staff member to start a plant, encouraging others to be part of a planting team, investing in interns, etc.

Paul knew that inside this soft-spoken man whose faith “proved genuine” was a spark with the potential to ignite a raging a fire—a widespread movement for the gospel. At Exponential 2015, we’ll be focusing on these words Paul wrote in his last

Highlighting their journey and fruit, we’ll be hearing from and telling the stories of leaders that have at times, endured scrutiny and “friction” to follow their deep conviction for multiplication. These leaders realize that their success is not in “my spark” or even in igniting it in others, but rather in “fanning into flame” a missional multiplication movement that began with what God initiated in their heart, thinking and priorities. Throughout the next year, Exponential is getting back to our multiplication roots as we focus on lighting a fire of urgency for multiplication and creating the friction that brings conviction within every leader and church to ignite a multiplication movement. I hope you’ll join us at Exponential East and West, and online throughout the year, for what we believe is a critical conversation for the church, church planters and our world. Terri Saliba is the conference director for Exponential. She has served with Exponential for five years. Terri met Jesus later in life at the local church where she learned to love and disciple through her roles in children’s ministry and team leadership. A native of the Bronx, she shares her story of redemption with anyone who will listen!
