Tricia V. Graham

It is hard to believe that we are closing in on the first quarter of the school year already! As we continue the year, please be sure to download the PowerSchool app or check PowerSchool consistently with your child(ren). As parent, teacher, student conference time approaches, please be sure to sign up for a time to talk with your child and his/her teacher. Our teachers and students work hard to collect individual data, set goals, and reflect upon their work. It means a lot to our students to share thoughtful work with their parents. Conferences will be held during the week of October 15-18 (no school on Monday, October 14). There are also two half days on October 17 & 18. Students will be released from school at 11:35am. The Fall Book Fair begins on Friday, October 11 and will run through conference week. The book fair will be open in the media center from 8:00am-4:00pm Tuesday, & Thursday, 8:00am- 7:00pm Wednesday, and 8:00am to 12:00pm on Friday. We also look forward to seeing you at our annual PTSA Fall Carnival on Friday, October 25. Enjoy the Arizona autumn as our temperatures finally start to cool down!

Sincerely, Tricia Graham, Principal April Fraley, Assistant Principal

Welcome! I was born in Phoenix, but raised in the Hudson Valley region of New York. About three years ago, my husband, daughter and I made the cross-country move to Tempe, AZ. From Tempe, we moved into the Deer Valley district and absolutely love being a part of this community. Some of our favorite family-fun times include swimming, going for walks and visiting every playground our four-year can find. I am excited to continue my career with Deer Valley and hope to use my background to inspire lifelong learning in our students. Early on, I obtained a bachelors in Psychology and a masters in Humanistic/ Multiculturalism, each from SUNY New Paltz in New York. I just completed my masters degree in Special Education, with SEI endorsement, from Grand Canyon University in December 2018. Cheers, to a great year ahead!

Tabitha Hardy

My name is Tabitha Hardy, and I am very excited to be joining the Canyon Springs STEM Academy team as the new art teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. I graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a BFA in art education this May and am happy to begin my first official year teaching in a school setting. I grew up in an Air Force family and have lived in Florida, Iceland, Canada, Virginia, and Texas before coming to Arizona. Throughout my nomadic military existence, my love of art has been a constant and I am eager to continue sharing that passion with my students. My teaching experience began as a teenager when I volunteered as an assistant to my own private art teacher after moving to Arizona. Throughout the rest of high school and college, I have taught art to elders, intellectually and developmentally disabled adults, children with special needs, and in the classroom of Rincon Vista Middle School as a student teacher. When I am not teaching, I enjoy traveling, theater productions (Got Shakespeare?), reading, west coast swing dancing, and of course creating art.

Liz Hackish

Hello! I am so excited to be joining the Canyon Springs team! This is my 18th year of teaching & I have taught the first, fourth & fifth grades, 14 of those years I taught were here in Anthem. I am a Maryland native but have called Arizona home for the past 17 years. I love living in Anthem with my husband Tim & our eleven year-old daughter Kalina, who will also be a sixth grader at Canyon Springs this year. We have two amazing cats- Jack Black & Sven (yes, from Frozen!). We also have a german shepherd/ husky mixed named Clay. His nickname is “Crazy Clay”. I enjoy reading, playing video games (I’m a kid at heart!) , crafting & watching my daughter dance. We also love to foster cats & kittens for Anthem Pets! I am so thrilled to be teaching social studies & science to all sixth grade students this year! I can not wait to get to know your kids & make connections with my students & their families. I firmly believe that learning is best achieved in a safe, loving & positive environment & I encourage my students to take risks & work together as a supportive community. I also hope that my students will find learning our World’s history & science as fascinating as I find them!

School Supply Drive

CS Choir on the Rise!

The library has some exciting things planned for the school year.

We are very fortunate at Canyon Springs to have strong arts programs as well as our STEM focus. Our choir program grew last year with the addition of our Wolf Encore Choir for our 6th grade students to join as part of their specials rotation. This allowed our Wolf Cub Choir to open up to our 3rd grade students, as well as 4th and 5th. In addition to overall growth, the level of performance in our choirs is also going up. Last year, our 7th and 8th grade Concert Choir earned a rating of “Superior with Distinction” at the DVUSD Spring Choir Assessment Festival, which means that all three judges gave them the highest possible rating. We can expect great things from all of these students this year! Be sure to check out one of their upcoming performances:

• Two Book Fairs: October and February • Author Kathy Peach will be here during Read across America Week • 7th Annual Battle of the Books • Much more fun throughout the year!

10/9, 7:00 PM @ BCHS Concert Choir (7/8) will perform at the Boulder Creek Choir Concert 12/11, 6:00 PM @ CS All three choirs will perform.
