SPORTS BRIEFS • Texas AD to retire in 2014

MLS Standings

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Longtime Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds will step down in August 2014 and move into a consulting role at the nation’s wealthiest college athletic program, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Monday. The school is expected to make a formal announcement today, according to the person who spoke condition of anonymity because they did not want to pre-empt a statement from university officials. The Austin American-Statesman first reported Dodds’ decision. Dodds could not immediately be reached for comment. Dodds vigorously denied a report earlier this month that he was stepping down on Dec. 31. Under the retirement plan to be announced today, Dodds will remain on the job through Aug. 31, 2014 and move into a consulting role through 2015. Dodds is under contract at Texas through 2015 at $700,000 per year with a $1 million annuity if he’s employed at the end of August 2014. Dodds, 76, came to Texas from Kansas State in 1981. During his tenure, the Texas men’s program has won 14 national championships and 107 conference titles, most notably the 2005 national football championship. Texas also modernized and expanded its stadiums and facilities and grew into a massive, money-generating machine that brought in $163 million last year. Dodds — who once said about Texas’ wealth, “We are the Joneses” — oversaw the school’s shift from the old Southwest Conference to the Big 12, and Texas’ 20-year, $300 million partnership with ESPN for the Longhorn Network, a 24-hour channel dedicated to Longhorns sports.

Twins keeping Gardenhire MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins and manager Ron Gardenhire agreed to a new two-year extension on Monday, keeping the second-longest tenured manager in the big leagues in the Twin Cities through the 2015 season. “My father was a military guy and said the easy thing to do was walk,” said Gardenhire, who just finished the final season of his existing contract. “The hard thing to do was stay and try to make it better. That’s what I’m going to try to do here. I want to make it better.” Gardenhire has a career record of 998-947 (.513) as a major league manager, and trails only Tom Kelly on the Twins’ all-time win list (1,140). But all the losing the last three years was starting to wear on the fans, many of whom wanted to see some big changes made to an organization seems lost its way after being a model franchise last decade. Instead, the Twins brought back the 2010 AL manager of the year and his entire staff, too. “Ron Gardenhire didn’t get stupid overnight,” Twins President Dave St. Peter said. “He was the manager of the year in 2010. I don’t think there’s been a manager, a coach in this town that has ever connected with Main Street Minnesota better than Ron Gardenhire. I think people relate to him. I think they’re angry with the Twins and people want a scapegoat. “But at the end of the day, we believe organizationally and I think most Minnesotans believe that Ron Gardenhire isn’t the problem. We’ve got to get him better players.”

Wilfork likely out for season FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Vince Wilfork was pursuing a play when he planted his right foot, dropped to the ground and probably ended his season. “It doesn’t look too good for Vince,” New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Monday on WEEI radio. “I think he’s got a pretty serious injury and it’s probably unlikely that he’ll be able to play again this year.” The Boston Globe reported that the star defensive tackle tore his right Achilles tendon in Sunday’s 30-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Belichick did not specify the injury. Wilfork’s agent, Kennard McGuire, did not respond to requests for comment. At his news conference earlier Monday, Belichick said he didn’t know much about Wilfork’s injury or whether he would miss most or all of the remaining games. He said he hadn’t met yet with medical personnel.

Kings extend Cousins’ deal SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Vivek Ranadive has made a fortune in the software industry by betting on the right people. The new owner of the Sacramento Kings is now betting big on DeMarcus Cousins. The Kings signed Cousins to a four-year maximum contract extension worth a reported $62 million Monday, saying the 23-year-old center is the foundation the franchise will build on to lead a struggling team into a new era. Sacramento hasn’t had a winning season since 2006, but the new Kings management is comfortable investing in a player considered one of the NBA’s best young big men but who also has drawn multiple suspensions from both the team and the league for his behavior. “From my perspective, it isn’t really that much of a leap of faith,” said Ranadive, whose purchase of the team from the Maloof family was approved by the NBA in May. “I’m just doing what I do in my business every day, just betting on the best. And he represents the best.” Cousins led the Kings last season with averages of 17.1 points and 9.9 rebounds.
