Planning to go on a diet for weight loss? If so, the right dieting schedule is the first step towards making it successful. But don't forget that fitness is also important to overall health and at times you may need to compromise on your meals. If losing body fat is your primary goal then you must strike a happy balance between diet and exercise. One of your first tasks is to decide what kind of eating plan suits your body's needs and not to go over board with it. And in this context one of the most essential questions that people often ask is "how many meals per day should I eat?" Please understand that dieting is not about skipping meals but about eating the right kinds of foods at the right times. A healthy diet should be balanced and provide you with all the essential nutrients. Skipping meals or drastically decreasing the nutrient content of meals can lead to severe complications later on. So why do people go on a diet in the first place? Generally people diet for weight loss and to look better. Unfortunately people think that a few weeks of cutting calories will get rid of the excess weight that may have been building up for years. So they follow a strict diet for month and loose a few pounds. But what happens over the next couple of months when they go off the diet? Not only do they gain the lost weight back, but additional weight besides. Doctors and nutritionists suggest that for losing body fat we should eat at least three well-balanced meals every day. In fact many now recommend four to six small meals per day. By balanced we mean one that provides all the essentials that our body needs including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. For example green leafy vegetables are vital for providing roughage to your body. And one of the most neglected nutrients is water. Drinking lots of water (at least 6 to 8 glasses per day) will keep your body hydrated and will help your system functioning properly. What's more, water can also be a great source of healthy skin. Don't Skip Meals for Weight Loss Another common mistake that people make when trying to maximize weight loss is to skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most essential meal of the day, and if you skip it then the tendency is to eat more throughout the day. After sleeping for 6 to 8 hours your body is in need of nutrients to provide energy for the rest of the day. Breakfast doesn't have to be a large heavy meal. Something as simple as a piece of fruit or low-fat bran muffin will give you all the nutrients you need to kick start the day. If you do decide to eat a large breakfast you can cut back on the size of your lunch by having a salad, soup, or sandwich. To keep your metabolism revved up you should have a small snack between breakfast and lunch, and lunch and supper. Again something as simple as fruit, low-fat muffins, or meal-replacement bars are a perfect way to insure that you are eating the correct number of meals per day.

For those who are on a diet trying to lose body fat, or are planning to do so, the key is consistency. Don't try to accomplish your goals overnight. Many women in their desire for an "hourglass figure" go to extremes and in the process begin suffering from such eating disorders as anorexia or bulimia. Both these diseases are related and are characterized by a false perception of one's bodyweight. No matter how skinny the person becomes they still see themselves as being to fat. The late Princess Diana is probably the most famous person in the world to suffer from a eating disorder.
