This is the time of year when many people start jogging to lose weight. But can it really work? The simple answer is 'Yes!' There have been many studies showing that starting to run or jog really can help people to lose weight. In the instances when this doesn't work it's usually for some specific reason. The most common of which is modifying diet to compensate for the extra energy expended! Often people feel they deserve a treat after they have exercised, but if the treat contains twice as many calories as they have just burnt off running, losing weight just isn't going to happen! The most successful strategies for losing weight include three main components: vigorous exercise (e.g. running or jogging), control of diet, and a support network. Often it's easiest to start changing your life step by step. Start with the exercise bit. Build up from what you can do today (even if it's only walking slowly for 5 minutes before stopping) to running for 30 minutes a day. By the time you get to running for 30 minutes a day, you will already be feeling healthier. You will start to have firm thighs where once there was just a wobbling jelly. You start to really feel that you are making progress towards you goal. This helps to motivate you to start thinking about your diet. I don't mean going on a diet. Only robots or liars can make a diet work. In the real world humans are going to err. Somehow you need to find a way of losing weight that works even if we are not perfect - and I'm certainly not you ask my wife! We all know that diets don't work. But when you are beginning to feel healthier and firmer from the exercise you have started to take it's much easier to start taking a little bit of care about what you eat. Then you can have the low fat snack instead of the burger. Or drink the tea instead of a cola. Adding this to your already-well-established running routine is much easier than starting out on a boring, bad-news diet. But it can really make a difference. Finally there is the support network. Everyone is different, and needs different levels of support. But all of the detailed studies have found that finding the support that works for you is the key to achieving lasting weight loss. It may be as simple as having a supportive partner. Or maybe you need a running buddy to help make sure that you put your running shoes on every night after work.

Maybe you need your children cheering you on when you enter fun runs. Some people love the team feel and support of joining a running club. Whatever you need, make sure that you find it. It will make your life more rewarding, make you enjoy running and taking control of your weight and your health. And you will achieve things you never dreamed possible without it feeling like any effort at all!
