Woman’s death sparks protest MONIQUE BASSON THREE days after a foreign visitor to Jeffreys Bay was killed in a horrific accident, a resident staged a silent two-day demonstration opposite Nina’s Restaurant. Armed with a huge red and white poster stating Are you next? Demand law enforcement! and a South African flag flapping in the wind, an irate Peet Venter boldly “planted” himself on the middleman in Da Gama Road on Monday and Tuesday in protest of the accident on Friday evening that claimed the life of a volunteer from Switzerland and injured another two people. Venter, whose birthday was on Tuesday, demands action from law enforcement to put an end to the senseless road carnage that is on the increase in Jeffreys Bay. “We must stand together as a community and demand that proactive steps are put in place to assure the safety of the Kouga community,” says Venter. “It is only by uniting as a community

that we will be able to accomplish this. We are not helpless victims, we need to do something and fight for what is right.” The accident occurred on Friday, February 12, just after 21:00 as the deceased and her three friends - who were all volunteers at the local non-profit organisation Timion - left the parking area at Jeffreys Bay SuperSpar and drove into Da Gama Road after having supper at Nina’s, only a few minutes after they have taken what was to be their last group photo. According to an eye witness, the accident was caused by the driver of a blue Golf that came speeding down the road and smashed into the Citi Golf. “The culprit came down Da Gama Road with a hellish speed and sparks flying from the tyres, bypassing a near-stationary vehicle that had run out of fuel. Only seeing the near-stationary vehicle, the victims assumed it to be safe to cross the road - not being able to anticipate or see the other vehicle. Continued on page 3

Still no text books for JBay High School THE Grade 10 students at the newly built Jeffreys Bay High School have still not received their text books, despite claims from the Department of Education that all outstanding books would be at the school by Monday, February 15. This undertaking was made by the Department of Education in January, but they have missed their own deadline. There are also no English text books for the Grade 8 and 9 students.

This was confirmed by the DA’s Shadow Minister for Education in the Eastern Cape, Edmund Van Vuuren, who visited the school earlier this week. “The future of the children of Jeffreys Bay is at stake and we cannot allow the situation to continue,” says Van Vuuren. “I will be escalating the matter to the Provincial Portfolio for Education in an effort to solve the problems facing the community of Jeffreys Bay,” he adds. It was also established that there are still

no computers for the media room and also no library books for the school, despite claims to the contrary. There is also no clear indication when phase two of the school will be built, and it is a matter of time when the current facilities will be incapable of housing all the students at the school. There are also about 150 to 200 students who were not admitted to the high school this year whose education has come to a grinding halt, as the Department of Education is not trans-

porting these students to schools in Humansdorp. Administrative staff have not received all their salaries, but are still committed to the school and go to work every day. The only deadline met by the Department was the appointment of a deputy headmaster and two Heads of Department, who were all appointed at the end of January. However, the school’s principal, Craig Nicholson, is still on special leave and has been since November 2015.

Thornhill-sewerage nightmare laid to rest THE recurring sewer nightmare of 87 households at Thornhill has been laid to rest. Kouga Municipality has connected their RDP houses to the waterborne sewerage system at a cost of R3,2 million. The project was completed and handed over to the municipality by contractor Phambili Civils and consulting engineers Worley Parsons this week. Kouga Municipal Manager Sidney Fadi says the houses used to struggle with sewer seepage from the French drains that were installed to dispose of effluent when the houses were built just more than 10 years ago. “The soil has a high clay conten;, as a result the drainage system didn’t work properly and sewage would seep up through the ground,” he explains. “The affected areas ended up looking like swamps and we were concerned about the health risk this could pose.” Resident Gladys Scholtz says there was also a massive iguana that lived in the swamp area right by the houses. “It was so big, we thought it was a crocodile. It was aggressive and we were really scared

of it. We haven’t seen the iguana since the work was completed and the swamp was cleared. It is a big relief for all of us not to have to worry about that legavaan or sewage making our children ill.” Willem Hofmeyr, of consulting engineers Worley Parsons, says the houses were now connected directly to the Thornhill Waste Water Treatment Works by a gravitational line running underneath the N2. “We would like to congratulate and thank the municipality, Council and community for the manner in which this project was handled. Thanks to the incredible cooperation we had from everyone, we were able to complete the project on time and within budget,” he says. Kouga Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Patrick Kota says the completion of the project effectively ended the town’s reliance on septic tanks, French drains and suction tankers for sewage disposal. “It is going to have a huge impact on the community and truly improve their quality of life.”

Boost for bush and grass clearing KOUGA Municipality boosted its bush clearing and grass cutting capacity with the acquisition of new machinery. In total 28 weed eaters, 11 chain saws and 16 Kudu lawnmowers were delivered on Monday last week to the Humansdorp Country Club. The equipment will be distributed to the responsible department’s work teams across Kouga. Social Services Portfolio Councillor Thandeka Maseti says the equipment and machines would help speed up service delivery by improving the appear-

ance of towns, clearing up open spaces and, in particular, overgrown erven which have proved to be a big challenge. “Our old equipment could not keep up with the demand and had to go for repairs constantly. The arrival of the machinery now means more operators on the field and faster response times when it comes to complaints about overgrown areas,” says Maseti. The total value of the equipment is R500 000.

Woman’s death sparks protest MONIQUE BASSON Continued from page 1 “THE speedometer of the oncoming vehicle came to a standstill at 160km/h. I cannot say with certainty that that was the speed the culprit was driving, but it makes one wonder.” Debris and oil marks defacing the road and middleman for several metres, clearly indicate that the speeding car hit the vehicle of the victim at the intersection of Da Gama Road and the parking lot and only came to a standstill at the Engen Garage. It is furthermore alleged that the driver and his three passengers, who sustained only minor injuries, fled the scene of the accident. According to Kagiso Sebetso from Timion, an NPO that is dedicated to working with marginalised children with disabilities in the rural areas and townships - the driver and his wife who was sitting in the front passenger seat, were unscathed as the back of the vehicle received most of the blow. “The young man and woman in the back of the vehicle sustained serious injuries. It was a Godsend that an Austrian doctor on holiday in South Africa was in the restaurant at the time. His presence was invaluable at the scene of the accident as he was able to accompany

the injured to the hospital in Humansdorp,” says Sebetso. “Unfortunately the young woman passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. The male underwent extensive surgery for his leg and pelvis and is in a stable condition.” As a community, Timion, would like to thank the deceased for her service and for giving her time to help those in need. “The accident is a devastating event for all members involved, but as a community it is important to praise this phenomenal young lady for the legacy she left to those around her and the children she worked with. We offer our deepest condolences to her family, who were due to visit for a holiday this week. “The driver has continued to show incredible mercy towards the other driver involved. Especially until the facts are revealed he urges that we redirect our anger into something constructive. As he so bravely put; we can’t understand the state of mind that the driver is in, he could be in a dark place right now but it is up to us as humans to come together. The team at Timion only wishes for God’s love and forgiveness to shine through this ordeal. May this help to instil a new sense of purpose and compassion, and not fear, into our hearts.” A case of reckless and negligent driving and a case of culpable homicide are being investigated by the Jeffreys Bay Police.

honeursgraad in Statistiek . . Dit is vir my terapie. “Ek kry soveel lewensvreugde uit my kliënte.

om te keer: You have changed my life, I am walking tall again. “Dit maak alles die moeite werd.” S Pauline werk sedert 2015 op `n tydelike basis by Aqua Spa.

Vir my is God se genade genoeg.” Hy is verder ’n ware steunpillaar wanneer dit kom by munisipale probleme.

Ontmoet posmeester Francois Hay JANNIE HOUGH FRANCIS Hay – stil, hardwerkend, tegemoetkomend. Stel die ander persoon altyd eerste – dalk leer jy iets by hom. Hy het die humoristiese Engelse

uitdaging (“Put you shoulder to the wheel, your nose to the grindstone, and then try to work in that position”) verkeerd bewys! Die dorp waardeer jou, meneer Hay. .

Reading coaches and DoE visit wind farm REPRESENTATIVES from the Department of Education (DoE) together with a group of local school reading coaches recently visited Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm as part of the wind farm’s community programme. Magriet Kriel, Senior Education Specialist from the DoE Uitenhage District, Ernest Loggenberg, District Co-ordinator of Education Management Information System, Zukhile Ningi, from the Institute of Training and Education (ITEC) for Capacity Building and fourteen coaches from the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm’s Foundation Phase Reading Coaches Support Programme spent the afternoon learning more about the benefits of renewable energy and how they can work in collaboration to assist local communities.

Local community school reading coaches (from left) Joszelle Baard (Quagga Primary School), Shaun Lewis (Patensie Primary School), Evenay Claasen (Kruisfontein Primary School) and Bradley Stefaans (Sea Vista Primary School) recently visited the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm between Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

“We were so delighted to welcome the reading coaches and members of the DoE, as their involvement and support are key to our various school programmes,” says Marion Green-Thompson. The DoE is accountable for all programmes within schools and works in a mutually supportive relationship with ITEC, an NPO situated in East London, to deliver school-based programmes. ITEC believes that the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm’s Foundation Phase Reading Coaches Support Programme is an excellent example of how well the public and private sector can work together to benefit society. The wind farm is committed to helping communities through education, with a focus on foundation and early childhood development. The programme aims to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of primary school learners, through the introduction of Reading Coaches into 12 beneficiary schools. Coaches run reading sessions with groups of up to fifteen grades 1 to 3 learners at a time, although most of these groups are smaller so that each child gets individual attention. This programme, was launched in October 2014, has been funded for a three-year period by the wind farm to the value of R1 307 540 to date, of which R198 000 was specifically allocated for the purchase of books for approximately 6 762 learners across twelve schools, all falling within a 50km radius of the wind farm. . Participating schools in the vicinity of Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm include Chigwell Primary School, Gamtoos Valley Primary School, Graslaagte Primary School, Kruisfontein Primary School, Masisebenze Primary School, Mzingisi Primary School, Patensie Primary School, Quagga Primary School, St Patricks EC Primary School, Vukani Primary School, Weston Primary School and Sea Vista Primary School.

SPCA fundraising event huge success LIGHTS . . . camera . . . action - all for a ‘paw’ of a cause. Algoa Nissan’s showroom in Humansdorp was transformed into a scene of yester-year setting the stage for the very successful Vintage Fashion Show and Cheese and Wine SPCA-Fundraising event. The event was held on Saturday, February 13. With the showroom laid out as a catwalk with a red carpet for the models to ‘strut their stuff’ and a sumptuous finger food feast laid out on a very long table, the atmosphere was set for a fabulous evening. Wine and other

beverages were on tap and soft music played by Liezl Kruynen filled the air while guests streamed in. Among the special guests attending were Mr South Africa 2015 and Mr Bachelor Finalist Port Elizabeth, Armand du Plessis, as well as Kouga Executive Mayor Daphne Kettledas. Dancers from the Global Leadership Academy in Jeffreys Bay entertained the guests, followed by an unforgettable model show. All clothes modelled are available for purchase at the SPCA Vintage Shop. Guests were furthermore entertained by art work from local artists and an auction.

Abriella (9) wants to swim Robben Island Channel SHE might only be 9-years old, but Jefrreys Bay swimmer Abreilla Bredell already dreams of swimming the Robben Island Channel. Abriella, a learner at Victory Christian School in Jeffreys Bay, recently competed in a C-league gala event in Port Elizabeth where she won two of her races. She has been training at Brenton’s Swim School since she was two years old. Just why does she love swimming so much? “I am a very competitive person and enjoy swimming races against other people and improving my times. I like learning new things, keeping fit and taking care of my body. Swimming does all of the above

Over 40 local football teams will be spitting grass this March as they battle it out for the coveted Teams Kouga Cup. Presented by the Kouga Local Football Association, the South African Football Association Kouga 2016 Teams Kouga Cup is set to take over the region from March 25 to April 3 - a huge feat as 41 teams will take to the field over a period of only six days. Only local players with a player card will be allowed to compete in the tournament. It is compulsory for all SAFA Kouga teams to participate. The competition will kick off with a point system, after which players will battle it out over 16 rounds, followed by the quarter finals and the finals. Owing to the limited number of days over which the tournament will take place, matches will be 30 minutes a side instead of the usual 45 minutes a side. The Teams Kouga Cup will take place at the sports field in Hankey. Tickets cost R5 for adults, R2 for children and R10 per vehicle. Contact Mongezi Khatshiwe at 082 668 4739.

When asked if it was scary swimming the 500m when she was just 8 years old, Abriella said it wasn’t too scary and that she is going to move up to the 1km swim as soon as she has the 500m sorted. Abriella’s ultimate goal in swimming is to practise hard and to swim the Robben Island Channel with her coach Brenton Williams. Her favourite stroke is butterfly, but she thinks her first Robben Island crossing will be freestyle. “I have started to surf in cold water, so think I will be able to swim Robben Island once I am a bit older and have practised more in Marina Martinqiue,” says Abriella.
