Bumper holiday season expected ESTI STEWART

A

LL indications are there that the 2013/14 summer holiday is going to be a record breaking season as visitors already started to flock down to the Kouga coastline in what seems will be a longer and busier holiday season than in previous years. As in the past, all the coastal towns offer a jam packed events calendar filled with organized sporting events, beach activities, live music, Christmas markets and food festivals. December is not the only time important to the local tourism industry, as two exciting and unique festivals will be held in the villages of St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis next year. Building on the visions of their founders, these villages will celebrate their uniqueness in 2014. Founder of St Francis Bay, as well as NSRI Station 21, Leighton Hulett, lived out his dream of creating a family holiday destination in the St Francis area. He held the first Hobie Cat Challenge, sail boat races down the Kromme River as well as Boxing Day beach buggy races. The Nautical Capital Festival, brainchild of Darryl Earl David of Booktown Richmond fame, intends to build on this nautical heritage. “We are extremely thrilled that Darryl David, a man synonymous with literary festivals, approached St Francis with this niche festival,” says Brian Codling, Chairperson of St Francis Tourism. To build on the brand of Nautical Capital, David plans to launch South Africa’s first Festival of Photography during the last week of April 2014. “Photographers will be kept busy with the charms of St Francis,” gushes David. “A lighthouse, calamari capital of SA, a working harbour, the signature canals of St Fran-

cis Bay, wetlands and fynbos... get those camera’s out! I think St Francis will get some ‘long exposure’ from this project.” A family day at Port St Francis will lead into an All Things Nautical week, with events such as the Cape St Francis Longboard SA Championships, an interclub catch-and-release fishing competition, jet-ski runs and a sand art competition. In October, the village of Cape St Francis will honour the vision of their founder, John Booysen’s wife, Irma, who had been the driving force behind the declaration of Cape St Francis’s various protected nature reserves through hosting the inaugural Seal Point Wild Flower Festival. The Cape St Francis Resort will be host to the festivities, including floral displays, exhibitions and informative sessions at the Resort. The week long festivities will include exciting foraging and cooking with indigenous plants, homeopathy and the healing power of indigenous plants, and lectures on the unique biodiversity of the area. The festivities will be taken outdoors with various guided walks through the reserves, including a half marathon through all the nature reserves. “Our little Village has so many fascinating stories that we want to share,” says Fasie Malherbe from the Resort. “Our unique biodiversity is reason to celebrate. Fynbos is so much part of who we are, even the skippers on the chokka boats will tell you they smell the fynbos out at sea.” The Resort already opened their new Activity Centre in anticipation of the Seal Point Wild Flower Festival, where children can enjoy a holiday programme. Lillian Baker, who manages the Centre, can also assist with guided and unguided walks such as the Walk on the Wild Side, Walk in the Woods and Walk on the Beach. For more information, phone

Kouga commemorates Nelson Mandela The Kouga Municipality has placed books at its units, tourism office in Jeffreys Bay and libraries for messages of condolences from residents and visitors. Adding their voice to this combined tribute to Madiba from Kouga are mayor Booi Koerat and councillor Vernon Stuurman. According to Stuurman, everything this humble giant did, was for his people. “In spite of being president, he could still identify with the ordinary South African and make a collective decision not to build himself, but to empower his people,” said Stuurman. Koerat said: “It was indeed with pain that we heard about the passing of Nelson Mandela, but we now have to celebrate his wonderful achievements over the years.” The books will be send to Mandela’s family. A MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCES

Kouga Council pays tribute to Madiba rations to follow. Tata Madiba was both a product and maker of history. Born in 1918, he grew up in the soil of Apartheid but his island prison could not stop his roots from shooting deep into the African soil and beyond. Prison bars could not stop this great world leader from seeding a generation of liberation-fighters who, like their icon, were willing to give their lives to nurture a society free from oppression. Tata, we salute you and vow to look after the incredible legacy you left us. Your legacy will live on, not only through everything that has been named for you but in the way we relate to one another. We are one people, one nation because of you. As a Kouga Council, we call on all local communities to join hands. Let us reaffirm Tata Madiba’s values and recapture his spirit in all we do. Let him be the example of what we aspire to be. Tata, we mourn your loss. Our deepest condolences go to your family. Their pain is our pain. We further thank God for gifting our country with a man of such courage and conviction. Tata Madiba left an indelible mark on all of humanity. Give us the strength to pick up the baton and to continue where he left off. Hamba kahle, Tata.

NEVER was the power of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela as evident in Kouga as on Monday, December 9, when the local Council paid homage to the founding father of South Africa’s rainbow nation. Party politics and personal differences fell to the wayside as councillors spoke as one about the almost superhuman contribution Tata Madiba made to South Africa and the world. As a Council, we will remember this son of our soil for his grace, dignity and unwavering commitment to peace, justice and equality. We will remember him as a kind and patient man whose word was his honour and whose wisdom spoke to the core of our humanity. The Kouga Council will not falter from the course Tata Madiba set when he was released from prison in 1990 after 27 long years of incarceration. We will not forget how, with forgiveness in his heart and the betterment of his beloved country in mind, he chartered a course that liberated each one of us. As a Council, we will also strive to ensure that Tata Madiba is remembered by all gene-

KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 12 DECEMBER 2013

Holiday programme to include tribute to Madiba THE Opening of the Season at Jeffreys Bay will be dedicated to Nelson Mandela this year. The announcement was made at the media launch of the Kouga summer holiday programme on the morning after the death of the great statesman. Tourism Portfolio Councillor Virginia Camealio-Benjamin said the Opening was being planned for Monday, December 16. “As this is the day after the official mourning period of ten days, we will dedicate the day and all its activities to the man who lead our country to freedom, Nelson Mandela” she said. The Opening will kick off at 09:00, with a street carnival from the new surf sculpture at Tecoma Street, Jeffreys Bay, to Dolphin Beach. Soria Swart, from carnival organisers Dorp van Drome, said it was fitting to dedicate the carnival to Madiba. “Madiba had the ability to unite people, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or beliefs. He reminded us that we are all equal and excelled at building relations between people. “That is what the carnival is about. It brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate who we are as a town and a people.” The Opening will culminate in a show by South African muso Patrick “Tururu” Lindoor and other local artists from 6pm at the main beachfront. The festive lights at Dolphin Beach will be switched on by Kouga Ex-

ecutive Mayor Booi Koerat at 20:00. Camealio-Benjamin said Kouga expected a bumper Festive Season. “Most accommodation establishments registered are already fully booked,” she said. More than 50 events have been lined up for the season at popular beachside towns Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay. “The programme ranges from sports and games to markets and music, all focused on creating a festive vibe and cementing Kouga’s place as a favourite holiday destination,” she said. “What’s special about the programme is that it includes both specialised sports where top competitors will be in action and fun activities for the whole family.” She said extra safety and security measures were also in place, including additional traffic officers and lifeguards. “We are rolling out the red carpet for locals and visitors, and look forward to a very successful season.”

All set for a bumper festive season are (from left) Soria Swart (Dorp van Drome), councillor Brenton Williams, Tourism Portfolio Councillor Virginia Camealio-Benjamin and Tourism and Creative Industries director Carleen Arends. The 22nd event also had seen the first wheelchair finisher for St Francis parkrun, when Celina Hudson completed the 5km in 38:30. Fordyce had the honour to help her over the last grassy section to the finish line. There were 105 runners, of whom 21 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of five different athletics clubs took part. Since the inaugural run on July13, 2013, 532 different

runners, including participants from 15 athletics clubs, have completed 1 820 runs covering a total distance of 9 100 km. There have been 514 new Personal Bests.

FOTO: WERNER HILLS

Bay FM and Fountains Mall to host blood drive THE Port Elizabeth branch of the South African National Blood Services (SANBS), in conjunction with Fountains Mall and Bay FM, will host a blood drive on 18 December from 09:00 to 19:00 at Fountains Mall. Bay FM will be there with their Hit Mobile to entertain blood donors while giving their precious gift of life. “We have extended the blood drive hours to give everyone a chance to donate their unit of blood. We would like to collect at least 80 units of blood from this drive, to try and alleviate blood shortages synonymous with this time of the year,” says Nina van Wyk, Public Relations Practitioner Port Elizabeth Branch. Bay FM will keep the public informed throughout the day and many lucky draw prizes and give-aways will be up for grabs. Blood donors can donate blood as often as every 56 days, must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh 50kg or more, lead a safe and healthy lifestyle and have had a good meal at least 4 hours prior to donating.

New mobile app for NMMU EVERYTHING from exam results to breaking university news is now available at the push of a button with the launch of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s new mobile app on December 4. With official exam results due tomorrow, (December 12), thousands of NMMU students are expected to download the new mobile application – MyNMMU – freely available to most BlackBerry users, all Android smart phone users and iPhone users. NMMU say the app is also aimed at the public with useful functions like NMMU maps, contact telephone numbers, career and programme choices and events. “This app is about convenience but more especially it’s about reducing our carbon footprint by reducing paper printouts and unnecessary travel,” said NMMU’s senior system engineer of blended learning Shaun Meyer. The introduction of the mobile application, as a follow-up to NMMU’s MyJourney app sharing career and study options for prospective students, is one of umpteen technology projects to have been implemented by the university’s ICT Services. Meyer said the app has received high praise from those who have “test run” the product in terms of its functionality. Apart from the “anonymous” section of the app (for non-students and staff), there is built-in authentification (login) which offers users personalised tools and information about timetables, graduation, library catalogues, exam results, account balances, internet usage, adverts and for staff, features like class lists and teaching modules. “The app has been designed for ease of use, focusing on useful information and services that can be packaged to enhance working, teaching and learning. We’re confident that staff, students and visitors will find MyNMMU a useful tool,” says Shaun. In conjunction with this app, NMMU has also launched a mobile website. Visitors browsing to www.nmmu.ac.za from a small device, will now be prompted to either view the easily navigable and lite mobile site or the full website. The university now has mobile versions of the staff and student portals, Moodle (eLearning site), My Journey (to search for careers or qualifications) and the main public site. For inquiries contact Shaun Meyer at shaun@nmmu.ac.za or 0 041 504 4221.

Council to take legal action against Ski Boat Club MONIQUE BASSON THE owners of the Ski Boat Club in Jeffreys Bay might face legal action if they do not vacate their premises as soon as possible. This is according to speaker Magdalene Dlomo during a special council meeting held on November 5. According to Dlomo, Council will proceed with legal action for the eviction of the Jeffreys Bay Ski Boat Club after they ignored a written notice in January, which informed them about the termination of their contract with the Kouga Municipality.

They were given three months to vacate their premises since the piece of land is required for municipal services. “The Ski Boat Club did not comply in terms of the agreement and strongly indicated that the eviction will be opposed,” said Dlomo. “Hence the formal application to Council to instruct their legal representatives to proceed with legal action to evict the Ski Boat Club.” This is despite vehement objections from the DA. According to DA councillor Brenton Williams, the municipality is heading towards yet another costly court case as the Ski Boat

Club has indicated that they will fight the eviction in court. “The Ski Boat Club is even willing to build a second storey onto the existing building at their own cost, in order for them as well as the municipality to utilise the premises,” said Willliams. “Thousands of rands will be lost if the club is to be closed.” However, the majority of Council was adamant that the Ski Boat Club must vacate their premises immediately. A motion of exigency by the DA was also overruled. “The matter has already been resolved and is not open for debate,” said Dlomo.

I decided to visit him, but before I could say something he told me all my problems, he gave met a Gowa Cream which I smeared on my face and I went to play casino and won R350 000 the same day. Thanks to Mr Stive, now I settled my loans and paid my sons and daughters university fees. I recommended Mr Stive to Mrs Mkhize, 53 years Kokstad. She never heard from her husband for more than 13 years. Her husband was staying with another woman. Soon after she visited Mr Stive, her husband phoned and apologized to her and came back the next day. Now they live a happy life. Don’t get more than you bargained for while shopping this festive season AS we approach the festive season, shopping centres will be busier than usual and it is important that shoppers keep their wits - and their belongings - about them. It is a good idea to carry as little as possible in your handbag or pockets. Martin Kriel, Managing Director of ADT Security East Coast Region, suggested leaving any unnecessary bank or store cards and large amounts of cash at home. “A packed clothing store or supermarket is the prime hunting-ground for a pick-pocket or bag-snatcher. Never leave your handbag, purse or wallet in a trolley. If you don’t use a bag or are not taking one along, keep your wallet or purse in the front pocket of your jacket or trousers.” If you need to draw money at an ATM, it is best to use a machine in a busy area. “Put your money in your purse or wallet before you walk away from the ATM,” said Kriel. “If you think someone has followed you from the machine, walk into the nearest shop or up to a mall security guard if you spot one nearby.” He added that your safety outside the mall is just as important as it is inside. It is vital that you keep your wits about you when walking the distance between the exit and your car, especially at night and even more so if you are alone. “Before you exit the mall, have your key ready so that you don’t waste any time getting your purchases and yourself into your car. This also means that you’ll be able to hold tightly onto your handbag while walking. If someone does try to snatch your handbag, let it go. Do not resist or fight back.” Kriel suggested that if you use public transport, you try to complete your shopping earlier rather than later. He added that it is a good idea to check the timetable ahead of your trip to the shops so that you don’t have to wait too long at a bus stop or train station.
