Residents fed up with ‘craters’ MONIQUE BASSON

W

HILE the Executive Mayor drives on a nicely paved road, residents of Arcadia, Graslaagte and Kruisfontein are struggling on a daily basis to manoeuvre their vehicles through all the pitfalls - which often proves to be an impossible task.

Pothole-infested roads in these areas are becoming a source of growing irritation for motorists who have to negotiate damaged road surfaces on a daily basis. Motorists and residents in the area said they are fed up and demand the municipality to fix the potholes fast. “Our roads are terrible. It is as if something is eating away at them. It is so bad that you can’t even call it potholes, it much more resembles craters dug by a machine,” said an irate Gerty Jantjies from Attie Street in Arcadia. “Our cars get damaged because everywhere there are potholes. The municipality seriously needs to do something about the roads that have been in a deplorable state for several years now.” Jantjies continued that the women cannot even wear pretty high heals, because you will have to replace the heal every few steps. “Every time it rains, our hearts aches because we know the existing problem with our roads are only going from bad to worse,” said Jantjies. “We have been crying about maintaining these poor roads, but there is no change. We do not know what is going on with our municipality. Our

concerns are not taken seriously and that worries us. “While we suffer the Executive Mayor, Booi Koerat, lives in a nicely paved road, Hubson Street, that leads directly to the tarred main road.” Joseph Pockbass and Hope Plaatjies from Kroutz Street in Graslaagte share this sentiment. “We have two vehicles but cannot even dare to drive it out of our yard,” said Pockbass who have suffered several damages to his vehicles before due to the bad condition of the road. Plaatjies feel that they are not being regarded as human beings by the municipality. “No person can be expected to live under such terrible conditions.” Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, said: “While, noticeably, our tar roads took a heavy beating from the recent heavy rains, our gravel roads are actually worse off. Work that had been done previously, was also undone by the constant torrential showers. “On a general overview, the worst affected areas are Paradise Beach, St Francis Bay and Kruisfontein and Vergenoeg in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp. Work will soon start on gravel roads in the Kouga area, with the Golf Course informal settlement in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp being the starting point. At the moment we are busy with the acquisition of the relevant machinery, with the grader already secured. We now need to secure an excavator for loosening the base course.” Sobele continued that as for Hobson Street in Arcadia, the street where Koerat lives, it was paved during the previous term of the council. Like other ordinary resi-

Graceland

dents of the street, he also happened to benefit from that development.” Repair work to tar roads will also commence soon, with the entrances to towns and the main roads receiving attention first. “We have limited resources, human and financial, but we are doing the best we can with what we have,” said Sobele. ;Gerty Jantjies (63) standing at one of many potholes in Attie Street, Arcadia.

Vehicle theft on the increase MONIQUE BASSON VEHICLES are disappearing left, right and centre, in the Jeffreys Bay area. The theft of motor vehicles is escalating around Jeffreys Bay and residents are urged to take the necessary precautions. According to police spokesperson, w/o Petra Els, they are experiencing a high volume of motor vehicle theft in Jeffreys Bay and would like to sensitise the community. Els continued that Toyotas are especially high on the list of criminals. “Since the beginning of August three Toyotas were stolen. Two of the vehicles were stolen

while parked at two different malls, while the third vehicle was stolen at the golf club. These vehicles were stolen in broad daylight while security was patrolling the area in most cases. “The police would like to warn the public to once again ensure that their vehicles are locked and the necessary safety devices and/or mobilisers are in place and switched on. Report suspicious looking people and vehicles to the police.” The Jeffreys Bay Police have also experienced an increase in the incidents of theft out of motor vehicles. “Five incidents of theft out of motor vehicles have been reported since the beginning of this month. In most cases drivers left valuables laying in plain sight in their vehicles, creating an open invitation for criminals.”

Aldus munisipale woordvoerder, Mfundo Sobele, is dié pyp verlede Woensdagmiddag herstel.

Police launches car guard project to reduce crime MONIQUE BASSON A GROUP of car guards have been equipped with high quality reflective jackets as well as business cards to help reduce crime in Jeffreys Bay. These car and community watchers, who have all been screened by the Jeffreys Bay Police, will be deployed across the town to keep an eye on parked cars and also deter business robberies and muggings. Police spokesperson, w/o Petra Els, said that the controlled car guard project was first launched on August 16 by the police in conjunction with local business people. “Approximately 30 car guards will be identified to be part of the project. Each one will receive a high quality jacket, as well as business cards to introduce themselves to their clients. Each one of these guards will be allocated to a specific area where he or she will work on a permanent basis.

“Since the launch of the project, there has not only been a reduction in the number of theft out of motor vehicle incidents in the central business area, but not one incident has been reported to date.” According to Els, only car guards with sober habits, good people skills and who can be trusted to deliver a professional service will be nominated to become part of the project. “The idea of the project is to eliminate intoxicated car guards who harass people all over town,” said Els. “By wearing these jackets the screened car guards can easily be identified. In this way the public can control them by only tipping the car guards wearing the identifying jackets. “Problems experienced with these specific car guards can be reported to the police. Complaints will be investigated and those proven guilty will lose his or her jacket.” Business owners interested in joining the project or to nominate a car guard, can contact w/o Johnny Haywart at 0 083 240 8489.

News in brief Man (70) assaulted in his house

The Joubertina Police are investigating a case of assault with the intend to cause grievously body harm.

A 70-year-old man was allegedly assaulted in his house in the Misgund area last week. According to w/o Marianette Olivier, police were called out on Tuesday, August 14 to the Nuwe Plaas area in Misgund, Joubertina. “The victim was allegedly assaulted on Monday evening and is not sure what exactly happened. Police members on the scene contacted his family and called for an ambulance. He was taken to the Joubertina hospital for treatment,” said Olivier. According to the Station Commissioner of Joubertina, Lt Col Ruth Slater, they are busy following up all the leads and as soon as it is possible to interview the victim, they will be able to have more information on what exactly happened.

Army medallion found The Jeffreys Bay Police request the help of the public win an army medallion found in the possession of a suspect, who was arrested two and a half weeks ago in the vicinity of St Francis Bay for stock theft. According to w/o Petra Els, the suspect was hiding the medallion in his shoe. The police are looking for the owner of the medallion and would like to know how the suspect came in possession of the item. The serial number on the medallion is 155548 and dates from 1994. Anyone with information in this regard, can contact the Jeffreys Bay stock theft unit commander, Captain Morné Viljoen at 0 082 319 9216.

Municipality bids Ngcayisa farewell

CLEANING OUR BEACHES

KOUGA Municipality bids farewell to one of the sons of the soil and one of our area’s most precious assets. Our former Strategic Services Director Mziwoxolo Jabu Ngcayisa sadly passed away last week. A hard worker, a loyalist of the public he served, a strategist and an intellectual. This larger than life figure made an indelible mark in our institution and executed every task given to him with due diligence.

He could always be relied upon at times when there would be a vacuum and leadership was needed. He was entrusted to form part of our senior management structure for two terms and held reigns as Acting Municipal Manager when called upon to do so. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. He will be laid to rest at a place that was dearest to him, Roodefontein near Hankey. on Saturday morning.

Members of the Blue Print Project, an initiative of the Department of Environmental Affairs, cleaned up the beach in front of Pellsrus yesterday. Not only did they pick up all rubble, but they also removed alien vegetation in order for the natural vegetation, such as Fynbos, to reestablish itself in the area. As part of the project they have involved the learners from Pellsrus Primary School, teaching them more about the environment and how to take better care of the environment they live in. The two year project kicked off last year August and covers the beaches from Van Stadens to Eerste River in Tsitsikamma. Ready for the work ahead are (back from left) Rob Syme (ecologist), Vivian van Eyk (site manager), Kanya Papa, Sifiso Nyawose (project coordinator (chief of operations), (front from left) and Pellsrus Primary School grade 7-learners Lindie Lee Brown, Ashley Afrika and Okuhle Minya.

662-Jarige 2-Jarige ttem em bbielie-duin ielie-duin oop p ’’n n pplank lank MONIQUE BASSON

“E

Én alles het begin by ’n droom.

So gesê so gedaan.

Enter the world of culinary excellence LEIGH KOOIKER WITH the hospitality industry experiencing record growth, there has never been a more exciting time to enter into the culinary world. The culinary industry in the country has expanded extensively and is now up to par with most culinary Mecca’s across the world - with an emphasis on local flavours, organic ingredients, as well as a rise in South African celebrity chefs, South Africa is one of the top competitors within the culinary world. With this growing hospitality industry, many culinary schools have been established across the country, offering intensive training in hopes of delivering outstanding culinary masterminds. One such school is 3 Fat Fish School of Food in Jeffreys Bay. Established in February 2010, husband and wife team, Brent and EmmyLou Mills opened 3 Fat Fish in order

to give something back to the community. Having travelled all over France, Italy, Croatia and the America’s, and after opening restaurants in Durban, St Francis Bay and Jeffreys Bay, Brent and Emmy-Lou decided to use their passion and knowledge of food to teach young food enthusiasts about the culinary industry. Offering daily cooking, baking and theory classes, head-chef, Brent, and head-lecturer, Emmy-Lou, hope to inspire their students to excel in every aspect of the traditional culinary arts. With exciting subjects such as nutrition, wine tasting and theory, food photography, cocktail making, organic gardening, Artisan-style baking and Lindt chocolate workshops, 3 Fat Fish offers a unique experience that incorporates all spheres of the culinary world. Currently, 3 Fat Fish School of Food offers a six-month intense commis chef certificate, catering for a maximum of six students per course. However, as of February 2013, 3 Fat Fish will cater for up to twelve students, of-

fering a 1 year City and Guild certificate and Diploma. This new 1 year City and Guild accreditation elevates 3 Fat Fish into an exciting new league as it opens doors to numerous fantastic career opportunities. While 3 Fat Fish continues to grow, the most challenging aspect according to Emmy-Lou is, “finding student chefs who are passionate, self-motivated and willing to learn.” The culinary industry is intense and EmmyLou believes students need to “take what they learn and turn it into something beautiful.” With their diverse School of Food, Brent and Emmy-Lou hope to create a legacy, both here in the Eastern Cape, and hopefully internationally. “By creating and nurturing talented commis chefs, we hope to contribute to, and also transform, this fantastic hospitality industry we find ourselves in today.” For information on the 3 Fat Fish School of Food visit www.3fatfish.co.za or contact Emmy-Lou Mills at 0 082 653 9353.

Kom kyk! Kom luister! Kom beleef! Kom koop kaartjies. Slegs ’n beperkte aantal kaartjies is nog beskikbaar.

Victory Gap Year to host Fashion Fair VICTORY Gap Year will host an “EcoChic Fashion Fair”, featuring a number of South African designers and their eco-inspired collections, on September 21. This fundraising event is a continuation of the Vintage Fashion Fair from last year.

According to Marike Stroebel from Victory Gap Year, this event is a fundraiser aimed at raising money for their year-long programme which focuses on life, leadership and adventure. Tickets cost R20 per person and the doors will open at 5pm with the pro-

gramme starting at 6pm. Those attending the fair will enjoy food and drinks, while browsing the stalls showcasing local artists and businesses in between runway collections and entertainment. For more information, contact Marike Stroebel at 0 073 977 3564.

Foto: VERSKAF Tribute to the late Jabu Ngcayisa Phumzile Oliphant, Portfolio Councillor Local Economic Development, writes: A son of the soil has passed on. Born on the hills and valleys of the Gamtoos he spent his youth days as a rural child and was brought up and given education by peasants. They sacrificed with their blood and sweat - possessing absolutely nothing and yet, they managed to give their son education. Even though the brutal system of apartheid was not in favour of a black child acquiring

that kind of education, the parents of Jabu outclassed the inferior, suppressive, dragonistic and inhumane system. Jabu - an academic, a parent and tested cadre - played his part locally, regionally provincially, nationally and to an extent continually. He worked many years for Coca Cola and travelled almost all countries in Africa, he further worked for Cell C before he was employed as a director for strategic services. Because of his intellectual capabilities he became the longest serving director in the Kouga Municipality. He mastered all tasks given to him - he was indeed a genius. I know him as he was a close friend - I became his political head from June 2011 after the local government elections. As a portfolio councillor for local economic development - I was highly fortunate to have a director such as him - I enjoyed listening to his inputs and advice. He would make sure you leave his office fully understanding whatever he was sharing with you. Kouga and its people have lost an asset which in my own conviction i conclusively and boldly attest: no one will ever replace him. We were shocked and deeply saddened by his demise indeed a loss not only to his family and friends but to the entire population of the Kouga. He was indeed a down to earth and humble man - we will miss him for as long as we live. During these days of darkness I want to assure the wife, children and friends that we mourn the death of Jabu with you. The product we all treasured is no more. Let us remain resolute and emulate the good things Jabu did in Kouga and beyond. HAMBA KAHLE QHAWE LAMAQHAWE MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE Ratepayers - Why not toy-toy? Ratepayer from Jeffreys Bay writes: Ratepayers why do we not toy-toy at the municipal offices? That seems to be the way to get results other than burning tyres and throwing stones. The roads are so full of potholes that our cars are being wrecked, but no one cares. We have to pay for our own repairs and replacements. Jeffreys Bay’s roads must surely be the worst in the country and nothing is being done about it. The old cry: “No money”, but where has it all gone. The best they do is fill a hole with sand, but come the next rains and it is all washed out. That is when it all starts again.

UINESS World Records have officially confirmed that the 2012 Rotary Global Swimarathon held in 23 countries and five continents on Saturday, February 25 was a world record.

Out of the 4 546 swimmers, 46 participated in the St Francis Bay attempt, including the youngest participant in the world, Jessica Brown (8) from the St Francis College. The challenge was to see how many people can swim 100m in the same hour. At the same time $104 622 was raised for the End Polio Now campaign. “Each and every entry recorded was approved, from the young Jessica to the oldest person of 93,” Paul Wil-

son, event organiser from the Rotary Club of Grantham said. “We’ve had a few months to emotionally digest the sheer enormity of raising this amount and how many thousands of children’s lives can be saved as a result.” The Rotary Global Swimarathon will be repeated next year on Rotary Day, Saturday, February 23. “Over 350 clubs, including St Francis Bay already provisionally registered to take part. It promises to be the biggest worldwide one day swim ever staged. It will be a swim for peace, with the idea to get as many as 1 000 clubs in 100 countries involved, over 50 000 swimmers and a target of raising over $1-million for End Polio Now and for local charities.” St Francis Sport in conjunction with the Rotary Club of St Francis will host the event.
