Partners to the rescue

K

OUGA Municipality and Santam, South Africa’s leading short-term insurance company, have partnered to strengthen rescue and emergency services to residents of the region. Santam last week donated office and audiovisual equipment to the headquarters of Kouga’s rescue and emergency services at Humansdorp to support the municipality’s Early Warning System. The company is also working with the municipality to determine how water availability to the St Francis area can be improved in the event of fire. Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said the partnership had its origins in the devastating fire that razed more than 70 homes in St Francis Bay in November 2012. “We are grateful to Santam for investing in the safety of Kouga residents and hope that this will be an ongoing partnership, focused on disaster risk management for Kouga.” John Lomberg , head of Stakeholder Relations at Santam, said the company firmly believed that business had a role to play in reducing the impact of disasters on lives and property. “Partnerships such as these are a win-win situation for us, government and the communities we serve,” he said. “Catastrophic events are becoming more severe and the impact on insurance claims is increasing. In certain municipal areas the risks become untenable, forcing the insurance business to load premiums to such a degree that insurance may become unaffordable for many. This practice is not sustainable.

We are looking for the best town

beautifiers

“Our aim is to establish relationships with government at a local level in order to support municipalities in their efforts to mitigate the effect of catastrophic events and natural disasters. “The more resources a municipality has, the better it is able to deal with fire, flood and stormwater perils. This, in turn, enables insurance companies to make insurance more affordable. “We trust that this equipment will go a long way in assisting Kouga to strengthen its response and recovery times, as well as to allow different sector departments to communicate directly with response teams on the ground in order to boost service delivery to communities.”

The Kouga Express and Builders Express in Jeffreys Bay, have joined forces to give recognition to residents who have made it their responsibility to help beautify the town they live in. Enter the Kouga Express/ Builders Express Beautify your Town Competition and stand the chance of winning a prize valued at R1 500 sponsored by Builders Express. With some of the gardening equip ment that can be won, are (from left) Gavin Slater, Deon Strydom, Ronelle Geyser, Jolene Job and (front) Dalvonecia Hermaans. See page 3 for the full story.

This is the motto the women behind the newly established JBay Animal Rescue Sanctuary live and sleep by. According to Elamrie Coetzee the six volunteers all have one thing in common. “To try and save animals, improve and maintain their living conditions, educate pet owners and to alleviate suffering of animals. Our main focus is sterilisation, education, deworming of puppies and to find new and loving homes for unwanted puppies and stray dogs. We also provide home owners with collars. “The project is operated from our homes in our free time and at no remuneration. All funding received goes towards empowering pets in the townships.” The Sanctuary covers Jeffreys Bay, Ocean View, Kabeljous, Mondplaas and Paradise Beach. They can be seen every Thursday afternoon from 14:30 to 16:30 operating in the Ocean View area dipping dogs, handing out food and treating animals with skin diseases. “We try to encourage pet owners to make a donation of R5 to help cover our costs and to give them a bit of responsibility,” says Coetzee. According to Coetzee they hope to build their own kennel in the near future. The Sanctuary is in need of volunteers, dog food, clothing and goods for their jumble sale across the old Clicks every last Saturday of the month , old kennels, blankets, towels, dog beds, collars and belts to make col-

lars with are also welcome. Donations can be dropped off at the Jeep Factory Shop or at any major supermark. Monetary donations can be paid into their FNB bank account, account name Jbay ARS, account number 62467923291, branch code 250655. They are furthermore looking for volunteers who are prepared to fosters dogs and cats. They will be provided with the necessary food. For more information or to make a donation, contact Jessica Naude at 0 083 650 6373 or Irma Morris at 0 082 878 9365. Alternatively, visit them on Facebook.

Tsitsikamma Tsitsikamma receives receives R17 R17 million million boost boost THE Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve, nestled at the mouth of the Storms River mouth in the Garden Route National Park (GRNP), will receive a welcome facelift to the tune of R17 million. This forms part of the Expanded Public Infrastructure Programme (EPIP) that will see the upgrading of existing infrastructure. “Planned upgrades include 17 oceanettes overlooking the marine area, the upgrading of the administration office, paving and oad works for the Otter camp and the replacement of the entrance gate to Storms River,” says Tsitsikamma area manager, Lesly-Ann Meyer.

According to Meyer, visitors to the Reserve will not be inconvenienced when construction commences. “Upgrading will take place in such a manner that visitors will have alternatives.” The Reserve, a Marine Protected Area (MPA), is home to 202 species of fish, sharks and rays from 84 families. Fifteen of these species can be found on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red data list as either vulnerable or near threatened, while many other fish species protected by the MPA are classified as over-exploited or collapsed in SA. It furthermore boasts one of the Garden Route’s big trees, a Yellowood tree that is nearly 1 000 years old. Two of Tsitsikam-

Green flag status is a system that ensures hiking trails in South Africa, meets standards in terms of trail outlay, accommodation, facilities and service, as well as the conservation of natural resources. Natures Valley beach, also part of the National Park, has enjoyed blue flag status for several years in succession. Blue flag status is an indication that the beach meets all stringent environmental criteria including water quality standards, safety and others.

Untouched Adventures is the adventure activity operator inside the National Park and they offer a range of activities for the whole family, from snorkeling and scuba diving, to kayak and lilo their most popular activity. PHOTO:SUPPLIED TSITSIKAMMA National Park is South Africa’s oldest Marine Protected Area. Just an hour from Jeffreys Bay it is the perfect day trip to experience nature and adventure at its best. Untouched Adventures is the adventure activity operator inside the National Park and they offer a range of activities for the whole family, from snorkeling and scuba diving, to kayak and lilo - their most popular activity. Meeting at their shop next to the small beach inside the National Park, friendly guides check you in and hand out your gear before heading to your safety briefing. After learning the tricks to paddling and steering, into the water you go to master your new found skills. Paddling up the Storms River Mouth starts by kayaking under the hanging suspension bridge, which will absolutely take your breath away. The deeper you paddle up the river passing bat caves, the steeper and narrower the cliffs get, and the views become more and more majestic. The gorge opens up to a shallow section of rocks where paddlers leave their kayaks and

jump on lilos - which are gloriously red custom built inflatable mattresses. While lying on the lilo’s, you paddle deeper into the gorge gazing up at the cliff faces, which look like they have been intricately carved by generations of rainwater flowing from the Tsitsikamma Mountains out to the sea. Climbing over rocks and exploring deeper still, you are amazed at the state of utter peace and beauty inside the Storms River Mouth. Turning around and meandering back down the river you stop at the deep pools and launch yourself into the river from a cliff jump. The whole trip takes between two to three hours and costs R399 per person. You can wear your swimsuit and closed toe shoes (that will get wet!) or hire shoes and wetsuits upon arrival. Bookings can be made online atwww.untouchedadventures.com or send an email to info@untouchedadventures.com. Alternatively phone 0 073 130 0689. Untouched Adventures also offers snorkelling and scuba diving.

Knock knock…The arts fest with a difference is back KNOCK knock…The arts festival with a difference is back! The resounding success of the Knock on Wood 2014 prompted Woodridge College and Preparatory School to, yet again, open its doors to young artists from schools in the region from July 28 to August 1. Knock on Wood 2014 promises to be every bit as exciting, enjoyable and innovative as the 2013 event. Adjudication of musical performances will be alternated with concerts covering a wide range of musical styles, poetry readings and exhibitions of participants’ art works. By popular demand, 2014 Festival goers will, additionally, have the opportunity to relish and compete in the brand new Drama and

Choir Categories. Details about these new categories and information about existing categories are available in our Prospectus. The Prospectus, as well as an electronic affiliation form, may be found on the Woodridge website: www.woodridge.co.za. The extended closing date for affiliation is April 25 and entries should reach Woodridge between May 5 and June 6. For more information, contact Lestie Hughes at 0 082 445 8939.

Jogger attacked on Kabeljous beach BRENTON WILLIAMS RISHERMEN on Kalebjous Beach saved a young woman from an impending attck when she was accosted while jogging there on the weekend. The young woman, who is a volunteer in Jeffreys Bay, was jogging near the sand dunes on the eastern side of the Kabeljous River when an African man, around 40 years of age, wearing black pants and a black hoody started following her. He eventually caught with to her and grabbed her arm. The woman shouted at the man to let her go but he reached for his pocket and pulled out something that she thought could have been a knife. some fishermen on the beach witnessed the incident and ran towards the woman. At this point the man let her go and ran away, with the fishermen in pursuit. He managed to escape. A couple of hours later another young woman was jogging along Kabeljous Beach when a man fitting the same description started following her. The German woman went and sat near some fishermen and the man came and sat next to her. He said he was recently released from jail and was living in the dunes. She noticed a tattoo on his chest. The woman then started jogging back towards Jeffreys Bay with the suspect following her for a short distance. The cases have been reported to the Jeffreys Bay Police. Residents are warned not to walk or jog along the beach by themselves, but rather in a group.

Sy was altesaam 30 jaar by die landbou betrokke.

Swimmers to attempt 8km uncharted swim TWO intrepid open water swimmers will attempt an uncharted swim along the St Francis Bay coast on April 26. Kendal Wright from St Francis Bay and Brenton Williams from Jeffreys Bay will attempt to swim from the wild side of the Cape St Francis lighthouse to Port St Francis. The swim forms part of the 2014 Nautical Capital Festival, which will be held in St Francis Bay from April 26 to May 3. Nobody has ever swum around the Cape St Francis point to Port St Francis before and the 8km swim will certainly present some challenges to the open water adventurers. Wright and Williams will be swimming according to Channel rules, which state that they are only allowed to swim in a speedo type costume, goggles and a swim cap – no matter what the water temperature will be on the day of the swim. Cold water is no stranger to the two swimmers, as both have completed the notorious Robben Island to Cape Town crossing and are used to getting cold. “I am expecting the water to be warmer at Cape St Francis and am looking forward to the swim,” said the 17-year-old Wright. The first challenge the swimmers will have to face is leaving land through one of the deep water gulleys on the wild side of Cape St Fran-

cis point. They will then swim out to their escort boats and then proceed to swim around Cape St Francis to Shark Point, which is known for the swirling counter currents and swells that break against the headland. From Shark Point, the swimmers will head towards the safety of Port St Francis. “The Cape St Francis swim will certainly present some interesting challenges and we just have to hope we get favourable offshore winds on the day,” said Williams, who will be attempting to swim only butterfly for the entire distance of the swim. Williams has done a number of extreme open water butterfly swims and will be using the Cape St Francis swim as a final preparation for an unprecedented rounding of Cape Point into False Bay butterfly attempt in May. “The Cape Point swim forms part of the Swim for Hope initiative started by one of South Africa’s most respected open water swimmers, Carina Bruwer, who organised a group swim at Cape Point in support of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust during March,” said Williams. “Little Fighters are kids battling with cancer and the Trust supports them and their families. I am going to attempt the Butterfly Swim for Hope around Cape Point in support of the Little Fighters.”
