Irate Kouga residents embarked on a mass protest march to the municipal offices in Jeffreys Bay. MONIQUE BASSON “MR Koerat are you corrupt?” “Scary cat, scary cat ...” “We want the mayor.” “We demand action.” These mocking chants filled the air yesterday when over 500 disgruntled residents from across the Kouga region marched to the municipal office in Jeffreys Bay, demanding improved service delivery. Led by the St Francis Bay Residents Association, in conjunction with the Federation of Kouga Ratepayers and Residents Association (FEKRRA), residents from Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Oyster Bay, Paradise Beach and Aston Bay each handed over a memorandum of grievances to Executive Mayor, Booi Koerat. That is after they had to wait for over an hour in front of a locked gate for Koerat and Municipal Manager, Sidney Fadi, to make their appearance

Placards stating “Life threatening sewerage on our beaches”, “Sea Vista ignored - shame on you”, “Why pay rates for no service”, “We demand service”, “Enough is Enough” and “Total breakdown of infrastructure” clearly displayed the feelings of the marchers. “Koerat is a coward. He does not have the courage nor the conviction to be the Mayor of Kouga. He is not fit to serve the office of the Mayor - he must resign.” This statement by the chairman of the Jeffreys Bay Ratepayers Association, Paul Hjul, was followed with outcries of ‘Koerat must go’ from the crowd of irate residents. In response to the closed gate that kept residents from entering the grounds of the municipality, Hjul said: “We will get a court order in due course and we will once again come back and assemble peacefully on the grounds of the municipality. “This action portrays the real culture of the municipality which fails to recognise that the municipality belongs to the people

that live in the Kouga.” According to Koerat, they will go through each memorandum received and respond within 14 days. “To date, residents owes the municipality between R100 000 and R120 000 million in rates and taxes. If every resident in the Kouga pays their rates and taxes, the municipality will be in the clear and we will be able to successfully address the grievances contained in the memorandums we received today. This includes aspects such as infrastructure, potholes and service delivery,” Koerat said yesterday. “I can not do anything without money.” Koerat continued that a lot of the problems were inherited from the previous regime, the new budget will, however, make a huge difference in the operations of the municipality. .Residents from Ocean View are set to follow in their neighbours footsteps and will embark on a mass protest march to the municipal offices on September 19.

Stolen sewing machine recovered THE Jeffreys Bay Police recovered a sewing machine from a local scrap metal dealer on September 4 after it went missing from a house in Pellsrus, Jeffreys Bay. According to police spokesperson, w/o Petra Els, the sewing machine of Daphne Faulkner was stolen from her sewing room at the back of her house on August 30. “On September 4, w/o Johnny Hayward visited a scrap metal dealer regarding an engine top that was stolen, when he discovered the stolen sewing machine hidden in a bucket in a locked office.” According to Els, the three suspects responsible for the housebreaking at Faulkner’s house, are known to the police and will soon be arrested. Two cases of receiving stolen property and contravention on the act of secondhand goods have been opened against the scrap metal dealer and are under investigation. A similar case against the same scrap metal dealer is also still under investigation, according to Els.

Beware of misleading property tax e-mail RESIDENTS are advised to tread carefully of an e-mail which claims the sender can help property owners save thousands of rands on rates and taxes. The e-mail was circulated to an unknown number of local property owners last week. Kouga Municipal Manager Sidney Fadi said the municipality was concerned that the e-mail was a hoax aimed at taking advantage of property owners who might not realise that it was too late for them to object to the 2009 valuations of their properties. “There was a formal objection and appeal period in 2009 and 2010. During this time property owners were invited to inspect the general valuation roll

and to object to the valuation of their properties if they believed it to be incorrect. This process was completed two years ago and the necessary adjustments were made to the valuations of those whose objections or appeals were successful,” the Municipal Manager said. He said the next objection period was scheduled for 2014 when the new general valuation roll would be finalised. “The objection period is governed by law and the person behind these e-mails does not have the legal authority to reopen the process either belatedly or prematurely. We advise property owners to keep this in mind should they choose to respond to the e-mail,” he said.

Local female farmer named as Job Creator of the Year

M

ADELÉ Ferreira of Mooihoek Boerdery has been named the 2012 Sanlam/ Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year Job Creator of the Year. Awarded for her incredible ability to adapt and effectively thrive in a previously unfamiliar industry, Ferreira’s business has grown from a few hundred plants in 1998 to a multimillion rand farming enterprise today. The business was started on a small scale when Ferreira initially began farming on land that she leased from her husband. Today, the business produces spinach, leeks and strawberries on a 40ha farm in the Gamtoos Valley and supplies the distribution centres of three of South Africa’s leading chain store groups, namely Spar, Pick ’n Pay and Shoprite / Checkers / Freshmark. Ferreira currently employs 90 employees at Mooihoek Boerdery. The farm also currently delivers strawberries to chain stores and markets in Durban, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth. Ferreira says that Mooihoek Boerdery started as a little girl’s dream of one day marrying a farmer and later evolved into a dream of empowering the working women on the farm. She says that building and maintaining relationships is one of the most important elements of her business as her suppliers, employees and clients are the lifeblood of the business. She attributes her faith and determination to continually better her business brought her into contact with role players that enhanced, empowered and provided her with the necessary knowledge she needed in the fields of production methods, irrigation and good business practices. According to Kobus Engelbrecht, a member of the 2012 Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year judging panel, Ferreira stood out amongst her competition because of the number of jobs she created in a rural area where unemployment is rife. “Not

only did she create a sustainable business, but she also provides employment to people who otherwise would only have contributed towards the unemployment number.” .The Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year awards aims to honour, benefit and uplift South African SMEs. Now in its 24th year, the competition celebrates excellence in entrepreneurship, serving as an inspiration to others to succeed in the world of business. Visit www.eoy.co.za for more information.

Dr Clayton Grieve 042 293 5015 Dr Grieve, who opened his practice four year ago at the Policlinic in Jeffreys Bay, assures that this is only an expansion of his services as a gynaecologist and that he will still be seeing his old, as well as new, patients at the Policlinic. “I can assure all my patients that my work here in Jeffreys Bay will continue as usual. Patients can still make

appointments to see me at my practice at the Policlinic as I will work between Port Elizabeth and Jeffreys Bay. The only difference is that delivery of newborn babies, and bigger gynaecological surgery will now take place at St Georges Hospital,” said Dr Grieve. According to Dr Grieve, this decision was taken from a safety point of view and to benefit patients and parents-to-be. “St Georges Hospital offers full maternity

and paediatric facilities, which are not offered to such a great extend locally. “It is my dream that Jeffreys Bay will one day boost a state-of-the-art hospital with full maternity and surgical facilities. I hope to be a very active part of the realization of that dream.” Contact Dr Clayton Grieve or Gerda at his rooms in the Policlinic on 042-293-5015 or 083-306-2018 (emergency). 1BR635Q7P-130912-KG-hs-grieve

“The CANSA Relay for Life is a high-spirited event where everyone in the community can join in the fight against cancer. It is a time when people you know and people you don’t team up to raise public awareness about cancer in the community and to raise funds to find the cure,” said Fountains Mall Marketing Manager Nadine Scheepers. Each Relay for Life starts with the Survivors’ Lap, a testimony to the fact that so many people today are surviving cancer. . “The most inspirational time of

a Relay is the Luminaria Ceremony, which happens at dusk when we honour cancer survivors, and remember those who have lost their battle with the disease. A Luminaria is a small bag filled with sand holding a small candle. When the candle is lit, the luminaria cast a warm, golden glow,” said Scheepers.“Each luminaria bears the name of a person who has battled cancer. All the luminarias are placed side-by-side to form a path. After sunset, all the luminarias are lit and remain lit throughout the night to light the way for the walkers and to create a path of hope.” This is the third consecutive year that the Relay will be hosted by the Fountains Mall.

Rotary Club to host art exhibition THE Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay is calling on all artists to exhibit their work during their second annual Rotary Spring Art Exhibition on September 28. According to Jill Pope, Rotary Club president, this year’s exhibition will express the theme of the current Rotary year - Peace through Service - in a visual way. “With this exhibition the Rotary Club endeavours to raise money for various Rotary projects and to recognise and encourage artistic talent in the Kouga region. Rotary supports the use of art as a catalyst for promoting the values of respon-

sible living, service and peace,” said Pope. All artwork needs to be done on the blank tray that will be supplied. Artwork must furthermore be original in concept, design and execution. According to Pope, the final artwork should be signed. “The artwork will be exhibited and sold during a ‘silent auction’.” Entry fee is R50 per artwork. Artwork should be submitted on or before Tuesday, September 18 at the offices of Moore Stephens at 15 Oosterland Street, Jeffreys Bay. For more information, contact Carina de Flaming at 0 079 513 5844.

They don’t, and we poor idiots who do our washing during the day end up with a nasty surprise at the end of a cycle. This means we have to wait, and guess, when the water will be clean enough to wash with. It also means we have to pay for the wasted water, electricity and washing powder. What really ticks me off is that the people at the municipality are indifferent, in other words, they don’t care at all. I can not be the only one complaining, can I?

Letters/ Briewe

Brown water a nightmare Tracey Prinsloo from Hankey writes: The water that we get from the Hankey Municipality is brown in colour on a regular basis. Now, it wouldn’t be so bad if they would just warn us that they are yet again working on the pipes, something they do a lot.

Watertight solutions for your house

A

LEAKING roof can really take the joy out of cuddling up inside on a cold, drizzly day. Similarly, mould due to moisture is just plain unsightly. The good news is that such problems are entirely avoidable if you invest in a good protective system that will keep the elements at bay. We asked Greg Orpen, Store Manager at City Paint & Tool in Port Elizabeth, for a few tips on the best way to waterproof your house. Waterproofing seems to be the order of the day in households around the Eastern Cape with all the rain and floods in the region in recent times. Many people seem to have forgotten about the importance of good waterproofing on buildings when we were caught in the grip of the worst drought in decades. When the rains finally arrived and continued to arrive, most of us soon realised that water would soon find a way through any small imperfections in the buildings where we live or work. Now is the time to seal and protect surfaces to prevent further damage from driving rain and flash floods. The most important tip with any paint or paint-related job is to ensure the surface is clean and free of all contaminants which could undermine the adhe-

sion of the coating. Polycell sugar soap can be used to clean everyday grime and grease from walls. Plascon Aquasolv degreaser is a solvent based cleaner for heavy duty washing of factory or garage floors. Surfaces that have been compromised by rising damp, such as flaking and powdering of paint must be scraped down and be allowed to dry before treatment. Remember to treat the cause of the problem first, to prevent the same problem from re-occurring. Find out where the damp is coming from. Fill and coat those areas so the water is repelled from the positive side. Flashings on roofs must constantly be checked and replaced with Plascon Roofseal and membrane when they perish. Plascon Multiseal is an excellent waterproofing compound for weather walls and parapets. This can be over-coated with Plascon Wall & All for long lasting protection. Plascon Brickseal is a silicone-based water repellent for face bricks, which can be sprayed using a regulation garden sprayer. Plascon Dampseal is used in areas where rising damp or water penetration has broken down existing coats, and extra waterproof bonding is required. A lot of people experience excessive mould build-up on ceilings and walls in low ventilation areas of the house e.g. bathrooms, cellars etc. Plascon “Kitchens & Bathrooms” is a wonderful new product which combats fungal growth on these substrates. It is water-based and easy to clean, appearing in a convenient 2.5Lt pack. City Paint & Tool can provide solutions for all your DIY needs and requirements.
