I

and once that is completed the number of jobs will rapidly decline to less than 200 by the eighth year of construction,” said Ferrial. “Nuclear waste is everything but safe. It is important to remember that high radioactive waste cannot be removed from site, and this waste can be active for up to 240 000. Should a nuclear melt down occur at Thyspunt, like at Fukushima, and the prevailing wind is blowing, a plume of radiation will cover St Francis Bay and Jeffreys Bay within minutes. Yet, Eskom brushes over this risk by maintaining that the predominant wind will blow radiation out to sea, posing little or no risk in the event of a melt down. “Infrastructure is another serious concern with the Eskom consultants saying that there is no serious danger of flooding and damage caused to access roads to Thyspunt. Yet, the St Francis access road has had been damaged and closed numerous times since 1996 due to flooding. There is still a temporary bridge over the Sand River due to the bridge being washed away in floods in 2011. How construction of the plant, as well as the future movement of highly radioactive waste will take place in the event of flooding, is simply not answered in the Impact Study. “There is absolutely no savings or benefits from nuclear energy - it is too little, too late at too high a price.” Another point of concern is that the traffic between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp will also increase dramatically. “It is estimated that there will be 1 200 plus additional vehicles on the road, of which 749 will be construction trucks. This will increase the usual trip of 20 minutes between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp to up to 55 minutes,” said Ferrial.

MAGINE having to evacuate at a split second’s notice - having to leave everything behind, including your house, belongings, pets, farm animals and even your children if they are not with you at that time. This is the reality of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear disaster in Japan, where three reactors melted down on March 11, 2011. In the wake of this ongoing crisis at earthquake-ravaged nuclear plants in Japan, environmental experts have warned a nuclear power facility at Thyspunt near Oyster Bay could spark a similar catastrophe across the Kouga region. According to activist groups, the Thyspunt Alliance, and Greenpeace, who are fighting Eskom’s proposed

power station in the area, the impact study presented by Eskom is fatally and legally flawed. At a meeting held last Thursday, climate and energy campaigner, Ferrial Adam from Greenpeace said that there is no truth in Eskom’s statement that nuclear energy is cheap, a solution to the shortage of energy and will contribute towards job creation. “At a cost of R240 billion rand, constructing a nuclear power plant is far from cheap. Furthermore, in the last five years, renewable energy has grown 22 times more than nuclear energy. And when it comes to job creation, renewable energy is at the top of the list and not nuclear energy. With renewable energy over 148 000 permanent jobs will be created by 2050, on the other hand, a mere 1 300 jobs will be vacant during the construction phase of the nuclear plant

360 ARV-behandeling ontvang. Daar was net verlede Dinsdag weer twee nuwe gevalle by die kliniek.

Woman (55) arrested for possession of dagga AT approximately 9pm on Saturday, May 26 a 55-year-old woman from Louterwater was arrested by members of the Joubertina Police for the illegal possession of dagga. According to w.o. Gerda Swart, members of the Joubertina Police received information

that dagga are being stored at a house in Plakkerskamp in Louterwater. “Police members found five big bags full of dagga. The dagga weighs approximately 45.5kg and the value is estimated at R45 000,” said Swart.

Second hand dealers to reregister THE National launch of the Second-Hand Goods Act, 2009 (act No6 of 2009), which came into effect on May 1, 2012 stipulates that all second hand dealers have to apply for re-registration within three month from the date of effect.

Second hand dealers must visit their local police station for application forms. According to w.o. Petra Els of the Jeffreys Bay Police, second hand dealers from Jeffreys Bay can speak to w.o. Hennie van Rooyen at Jeffreys Bay.

Egpaar leef in vrees na aanval MONIQUE BASSON

’N

In moeilike

I AM LOOKING FOR MY PARENTS

RANFURT TO JEFFREYS BAY: A few crashes, an injured knee, endless police controls and political unrest have done nothing to dampen the spirit of an avid biker from Frankfurt. After six months of intensive planning which included obtaining no less than 14 visas - Joachim Kaeufl (46) climbed onto his BMW GS 1200cc motorbike and set off on an epic journey through Africa, covering 19 countries and travelling 17 600km in less than eight weeks. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kaeufl first left Frankfurt on December 18 armed only with his helmet, protective clothing, his backpack and a heart full of adventure. After countless hours on his motorbike and spending several nights sleeping in the bush soaking wet, he arrived in Jeffreys Bay on May 15 without having one flat tyre or having to pay one bribe. Due to time constraints and work obligations, Kaeufl had no other choice than to complete his journey in two stages. The first stage saw him leaving Frankfurt in the middle of December last year, travelling through France and taking the ferry from France to Morocco. As each day passed from there onwards, he could tick off Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. Once he arrived in Cameroon on January 18 and after spending only one day there, he had to return to his hometown in Europe. He decided to leave his motorbike with trusted friends and took the first flight back home - with the knowledge that he will return as soon as possible to continue this journey of a lifetime. That day came on April 18 when he once again left Frankfurt for Cameroon, arriving there on April 20. From there his journey by motorbike took him along Gabon, Congo Brazaville, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia, Cape Town and, finally, Jeffreys Bay where he could kick off his shoes, wash off the mud, sit back and relax with old friends he known since 1990. “Kaeufl first visited us in 2010 for the Soccer World Cup. At that time he already said that the next time he will be visiting us, it will be on the back of a motorbike,” said his friend Kirsten Zank from the Ocean Bay Luxury Guesthouse in Jeffreys Bay. “I did not belief a word he said at that time, and look now, here he on his motorbike, just as he said he would be.” But this was only for a few days, as Kaeufl

once again had to leave for Frankfurt on May 15 - two days after he arrived in Jeffreys Bay. Just why did Kaeufl decided to explore North Africa on the back of his motorbike? “This trip has been in my mind for a very long time. The best way to explore a new country is on the back of a motorbike. Although it is hard work to spend hours at a time on a motorbike, one does not only see much more of a country, but you are also much more flexible, can hide easier from danger and take back roads not accessible to motor vehicles,” said Kaeufl, who has been doing off-road rallies for the past ten years. According to Kaeufl, Nigeria was the most dangerous leg of his journey. “Nigeria was a real war zone due to the current political uproar. I was bombarded with endless roadblocks, at the least ten, I even had some difficulty at the border post and everywhere you looked were angry people walking around with big weapons. “I think the agility of my motorbike, my helmet and the fact that I did not have much luggage with me, kept me safe in most instances.” And the most challenging? “Definitely the road, or rather the lack thereof, in Congo Brazaville. There is only one street in the whole of the country and I had to travel 1 000km on off road terrain,” said Kaeufl. “It took me one week to complete this distance as I could only travel 100km a day before nightfall. The road is so bad and the mud so deep that I crashed three times - with two crashes being only five minutes apart. During one of these crashes I hurt my knee and will have to go and see a doctor. “During this time, I was left with no other choice than to put up ‘camp’ in the middle of the bush next to the road, while being soaking wet. I was wet from head to toe for two whole days.” During his travels he had the privilege to visit various tourist sites, including one of the most famous landmarks in Africa, the Great Mosque of Djenné - which is the largest mud brick building in the world. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. Other highlights include visits to the oldest colonial settlement in Senegal, old slavery fords and beaches in Ghana and the rain forest in Cameroon. “If I had to chose one country that stood out from the rest, it will be Mali,” said Kaeufl. “At the end of the day I can say that I was truly blessed on this journey of mine, and that I did not have one bad experience.”
