“Volgens my dokter, dr. Activities have been included and this will showcase Jeffreys Bay as a top adventure destination,” said AmyEllen from Jeffreys Bay Tourism. “The past decade has seen the internet grow rapidly as a marketplace for travel as more and more people go online to look for destinations, air travel, tours and accommodation. . “Tourism in South Africa and around the world strongly recognises the importance of e-marketing and social media. With continuing growth in online sales and more than 60% of travel for both business and leisure now being booked via the web, the internet cannot be considered a small part of the tourism sector. South African Tourism’s campaigns are moving online and are investing more in digital marketing each year. “For tourists wanting to visit South Africa, the www.southafrica.net website entices the visitor with various videos ranging from adventure, culture, entertainment and health and wellness, playing on the unique selling point of each destination. This creates an emotional effect on the traveller and promotes further research of the area or expe-rience that they have just had.”

KOUGA Municipality will soon be closing the Patensie waste site which has been operating without a licence. The site will be closed on Thursday, June 21. The municipality is in the process of applying for a transfer station where refuse can be collected and transferred to the Hankey waste site. According to the Waste Management Act, the Department of Environmental Affairs must grant a municipal a permit to operate a waste site, subject to the regulations of the act. Portfolio councillor Thandeka Maseti said the municipality understands the inconvenience this may cause but seeks to follow the law. “Our Cleansing and Parks section will collect generated waste as per our routine and transfer that to the Hankey waste site which is the permitted one in the area,” she said. Maseti added that those found dumping on the site after the said date will be subject to fines ranging from R500, as this would be rendered illegal dumping.

Lifesaving team gets a major boost Kouga Municipality’s lifesaving team got a major boost with acquisition of brand new lifesaving equipment, courtesy of the Department of Environmental Affairs. The department donated two rescue crafts, two rescue boards with paddles, 20 torpedo buoy with 20 lanyards, 20 flippers, ten pairs of signal flags, ten pairs of patrol flags and ten shark alarm flags. The donation comes as the department closes its two year Coast Care programme cycle in Kouga and after applications from the municipality to be assisted with lifesaving equipment. Speaking at the official handover at Dolphin Beach on Friday, Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said the equipment will improve efficiency of lifesavers, as they will now be able to respond much quicker to rescue situations in the water.

“Our beaches are huge tourist attractions and our lifesavers are always kept on their toes. We must have a fully resourced lifesaving team and this equipment is exactly what we needed as we seek to boost our lifesaving capacity,” he said. Koerat said the equipment is also useful for trainee lifesavers, as they will be able to apply what they learn in theory using real tools. There will also be improvement in patrols as lifesavers are now able to spend more time in the water amongst bathers. Environmental Affairs project manager for the Coast Care programme, Lungile Mzuze, was a worthy recipient of the donation. “Kouga has thus far worked very well with us. Not only do they work on improving compliance with our regulations, but we have also noted the high level of commitment from their lifesaving teams in spite of minimal resources,” he said.

Mother gives birth to naturally conceived triplets MONIQUE BASSON WITH their dark brown eyes and cherubic smiles, Achuma, Ahluma and Awonke, are a picture of cuteness.

sleep at night,” said Brenda. “But everything is fine now and they are all putting on weight. I am so overwhelmed when I see them. I can’t believe that they are mine and that they are perfect. They are a handful and cry a lot when they are hungry, but I am enjoying and treasuring every moment.” Telling the two boys apart is not proving too difficult as Achuma has a birthmark in his neck, said Brenda. Non-identical triplets occur after three separate eggs are fertilised. This is increasingly common during IVF-treatment. Identical triplets occur when one fertilised egg splits to create embryos which grow separately but normally in the womb.

But as well as being adorable, they are also extraordinary. For they are naturally-conceived triplets, beating the odds of 8 000 to one, according to medical experts. Their delighted parents, Brenda (28) and Monwabisi Peter who is a detective at the Jeffreys Bay Police Station, from Vergenoeg in Humansdorp, were initially shell-shocked to discover their family would grow by three. Brenda gave birth on April 23 to two identical twin boys and a girl, each born only one minute apart. Brothers and sister were born at 33 weeks, weighing between 1.88kg and 2.08kg. They spent over three weeks in an incubator until they were strong enough to go home. “Finding out I am expecting triplets was a big shock, as we were not planning on having any more children after the birth of our daughter Aqhama (4),” said Brenda. “The first time I went to the doctor she said we were expecting one baby. When I went for the second scan, she said I was expecting twins. The third time, the twins turned out to be triplets. Shocked and overwhelmed I said that I was not going back there again and want a second opi-nion. I did not want a fourth baby to be detected. But I did go back to the doctor . . . and luckily she didn’t see more babies.” The eldest of the triplets are Achuma who weighed only 2.02kg, followed by Ahluma at 1.88kg and our little girl, Awonke, weighing 2.08 at birth. NEWS IN BRIEF

Kapt.

Police confiscate hedge cutter THE swift actions of a local police member led to the arrest of two suspects in their mid-twenties, as well as the recovery of stolen property before it was even reported missing. On May 23, w/o Johnny Hayward from the Jeffreys Bay Police Station reacted on information received from a public member and arrested Elton Oliphant (27). He was trying to sell stolen property to a local scrap metal dealer. The second suspect, Xoliswa Speelman (23) fled the scene and was arrested the following day. He furthermore confiscated a hedge cutter, that was reported missing the following day by the legal owner. The suspects appeared in the Humansdorp Court on May 27. In an unrelated incident, Hayward arrested Veranio Hendricks on May 25 for the possession of stolen property from a housebreaking in Pellsrus. It is suspected that two more arrests will be made soon.

26 People arrested over weekend 26 People were arrested over the weekend, while 92 residents were searched during zone operations held by the Humansdorp Cluster. According to w.o Petra Els, in Humansdorp 12 people were arrested for drunk and rebellious behaviour on street, one motorists was arrested for driving under the influence and 35 residents were searched. In St Francis Bay, seven people were ar-

rested for drunk and rebellious behaviour, while 25 people were searched. Only one person in Jeffreys Bay was arrested for housebreaking, while five people were arrested for drunk and rebellious behaviour and 32 people were searched. According to Lt. Colonel Michael Solani from the Jeffreys Bay Police, crime reported over the weekend in Jeffreys Bay was low with a 50% arrest rate on all cases reported.

Police looking for suspect THE Jeffreys Bay Police are looking for three suspects who stole a laptop from the Jeffreys Bay Computers and Gaming Shop in Fountains Mall on May 4. According to w.o Petra Els, the suspects, two females and a male, entered the shop with a trolley. “The male suspect took a Pink 14inch laptop from the display and put it in the trolley. The laptop was co-

vered by another package that was already in the trolley,” said Els. “The suspect then took a business card, upon which all three suspects left the shop.” Anyone with information in this regard, can phone the investigating officer const Bell at 0 042 200 6600/17 during office hours.

Security guard arrested A security guard from St Francis Bay was arrested for the illegal possession of a stolen firearm which was allegedly stolen in November during the fire that destroyed 75 houses in St Francis Bay. According to w.o Marianette Olivier, Elvis Alony (36) was found in his vehicle

with the firearm on the Kromriver Bridge in St Francs Bay Road and arrested for the illegal possession of a stolen firearm, as well as for housebreaking and theft. He appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate Court and the case was postponed until June 25.

HE Woodridge Schools will be opening their doors to schools in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route regions from July 29 to August 2 for the exciting new ‘Knock on Wood’ Arts Fest, encompassing music, visual art and creative writing. This festival, conceptualized as a biennial event, aims to provide an opportunity for youthful self-expression in an environment that is non-threatening, stimulating and conducive to a sense of camaraderie between participants. Consequently the adjudication process will be steered by the principles of discretion and sensitivity. A string of cultural offerings will, in turn, enhance both the festive spirit of the event and the inherent emphasis on experiential learning. Expect poetry readings. Expect visual art displays. Expect lunch hour and evening concerts representative of

both jazz and classical music, of both choral and instrumental ensembles. And expect, above all, a fun-filled experience. Both primary and high school pupils from the ages of 8 to 18 are invited to enter. Whereas the instrumental category includes piano, strings, woodwind and voice, the creative writing category is focused on poetry. In turn, the visual art category allows scope for both drawing and painting. It is, in this regard, worth noting that the high school visual art category, initially comprising themebound academic and experimental sections, has now also been extended to an open section for Gr 10-12 Art subject pupils. The closing date for entries is June 24 and details regarding the affiliation process for schools and institutions are available on the Woodridge website (www.woodridge.co.za). Affiliation and entry forms may be sent electronically or may be faxed to Woodridge College at

Vir meer inligting, kontak Riana Dippenaar by 0 082 727 2031.

KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 30 MAY 2013

Readers comments FOLLOWING the article Dirty water a ‘health risk’, published in the Kouga Express on May 23, readers had the following to say: Letters Unite and Joint the Jeffreys Bay Residents Association THE Jeffreys Bay Residents Association (JBRA) is closely monitoring the water problem in Wavecrest. We are busy analysing two water reports and are currently in consultation with the Department of Water Affairs, other institutions and the Kouga Municipality. A visit to the plant will be scheduled in this week in order to evaluate operational problems at the plant. We would like to ensure that all residents receive SANS 41-compliant water. We therefore urge the residents of Jeffreys Bay to join the JBRA and strengthen our unity to get the service delivery we deserve and pay for. You can become a voting member for only R100 a year or a non-voting member for free. These funds are utilised to reach our aims for all Jeffreys Bay residents. Forms are available at the Library and from the JBRA website, www.jbayra.com. Contact Garth Garth Ford, the Chairman of the newly elected Jeffreys Bay Residents committee, at 0 078 234 9791 to report issues. JBRA Municipality’s response is misleading THE response from Mfundo Sobele from the Kouga Municipality to the article Dirty water a ‘health risk’published last week is misleading. Firstly, the monthly samples submitted by the municipal health department are only

tested for E.coli, total coliform, and standard agarplate count in terms of The Blue Drop Certification requirements of the Department of Water Affairs. The mineral content of water from the boreholes is currently not being monitored, and has never been. Both analytical tests of the borehole water taken at different times reveal unacceptable levels of undissolved manganese which poses a serious health risk to elderly people and young children and should be of concern to both the Kouga municipality and the Department of Water Affairs. There are lives at risk here. Residents in upper Wavecrest, fed up with the poor quality water, have over the past year resorted to appealing to the President, the Public Protector, the Department of Water Affairs, and the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs about the situation, without success. While it is common knowledge that the Jeffreys Bay Water Works can no longer handle current demand and requires upgrading, the lame excuse that nothing can be done due to lack of finances is unacceptable. With proper management and an investment in new equipment the manganese concentrations in the drinking water could easily be reduced in the short term to acceptable levels by improving the oxidation and filtration at the water works. - DA Ward 8 councillor David Aldendorff

ine and Country International Realty is rapidly becoming known for its unique blend of intelligent and creative marketing, having won The Best Real Estate Agency th Marketing for the 4 consecutive year at the prestigious International Property Awards. The over 300 offices located world wide are coordinated by the Mayfair showroom in London. Combining the international market with the local knowledge and expertise of independent property professionals, Fine and Country is the Estate Agency of choice when buying, selling or renting properties. Since taking over the reigns of Fine and Country, Jeffreys Bay over 2 years ago, Sandra Coetzer (Co-owner/Principal) Johann Reichert (Co-owner/Manager) and Vanessa Deysel (Coowner/Admin) have seen the business grow and become a well established agency in Jeffreys Bay with a large market share. With its office in town centre and the satellite office outside Pick 'n Pay in the Fountains Mall, they are able to offer accessible excellent service to both sellers and buyers. When Charl Esterhuizen joined the company at its beginning he brought with him not only experience of selling property in South Africa, but

had spent years selling in the UK. He specializes in the Marina Martinique. Judy Pfaff also joined at the onset, bringing with her years of experience in the property market in Jeffreys Bay. Moving from Pretoria where he sold property, Pierre Botes joined in June last year and already has sales under his belt. The resident agent in Humansdorp, Sanette Steyn, is doing exceptionally well with rentals and sales on her home turf. The growth in the property market and in the company made it necessary to take on two further qualified capable agents with years of experience in the property field. Johan Deysel sold property for many years in Jeffreys Bay and has a vast knowledge of the town and property market. Having worked for years for a franchised estate agency in Kimberley, Carolina Muller is ready to share her knowledge and expertise. Trudie Botes, the rental agent, has ensured that the rental book has grown phenomenally. Kim Schoeman and Marinda van Niekerk, the admin personnel, ensure the smooth running of the office. Hyacinth – fit for a queen

T

HERE has never been any doubt that Marie Antoinette, Queen of France from 1774 to 1792, had a great penchant for beautiful things. This love of beauty extended to flowers. The Palace of Versailles was always filled to its golden extremes with an abundance of sweet-smelling blooms, she decorated her outlandish hairstyles with petals and her clothing and accessories were all scented with floral notes. It’s no wonder that the hyacinth, with its strong, sweet, heady aroma and long-lasting flowers, was often incorporated in her perfumes and placed in her vases, thanks to a daily delivery of hundreds of hyacinths to the palace from the Netherlands, as ordered by her husband, King Louis XVI. Originally from the eastern Mediterranean (stretching from Turkey to Israel) and west and central Asia, the most common hyacinths available to us in South Africa are either blue, pink or white, stemming from the over 2 000 cultivars that were cultivated in the Netherlands during the time of their massive popularity in the 18th century (it seems Marie Antoinette was not their only fan!). The single, dense spike of fragrant flowers, about 20cm high, surrounded by linear leaves, is enough to turn any garden into a palatial spectacle. Whether they are grown in pots, in outdoor beds or even hydroponically, you’re able to colour-code your display by grouping together the colours that work best

in certain areas of your space. When planting in April and May, look toward your bulbs for clues as to what colour the flowers will be when they appear between July and September, transforming your end-of-winter garden with a vibrant re-awakening. White or yellowish bulbs will mean white flowers, while blue flowers will burst from dark-blue bulbs and pink flowers will grow from pinkish bulbs. The growth of these colourful blooms isn’t hard to achieve if you choose their spot wisely – make sure it’s cool, with morning sun and afternoon shade, and mix a bit of compost into the well-draining soil. After planting your bulbs (either with necks exposed if in containers, or slightly deeper in the ground if in flower beds), toss some mulch over the soil to regulate the temperature and keep moisture locked in. And keep the water coming… Hyacinths, like all other bulbs, love being fed with regular moisture. In the case of hydroponic planting, use devices such as pebbles or marbles to hold the bulb at least 5cm from the base of the container so that the bottom of the bulb does not touch the water, but there is enough room for the sprouting roots to grow downwards through the marbles and into the water. Because cold temperatures encourage this initial root growth, keep the container in a very shaded spot outdoors until the sprout is longer than 5cm, after which time you can move the container to another cool outdoor spot that receives some light. Once in bloom, hyacinths can be moved in-

doors to be enjoyed on wintry days around the fireplace. Because these flowers last longer when in touch with cool air, place your pots and containers outdoors overnight if you have them inside during the day. Whether enjoyed indoors or out, hyacinths are definitely not a passing fad, having come a long way from their palatial days. And, although no longer used to adorn ringlets of cone-shaped hairdos, these aromatic blooms are still a part of modern-day feminine beauty regimes, with their scent evident in the perfumes of Chanel No. 19, Anaïs Anaïs and Gucci Envy. Enough to make you feel like the queen of France seven days a week!

Sporting talent is in their genes ANTHONY DE VILLIERS

S

PORTING talent is most certainly in the genes of the Lindoor brothers.

Both boys have recently been selected to represent the Eastern Province Hockey teams. Zarrin, who is currently in Grade 12 at Woodridge College, has made the under 18A side, while Mikhail, who is in Grade 7 at Woodridge Preparatory, was included in the under 13A side. This is however, not the only sport the lads

excel in. Zarrin also plays for the College 1st XV rugby side and with his speed and versatility, he can play in any back line position - he has been used at flyhalf and on the wing. Mikhail plays flyhalf for the Preparatory’s 1st XV rugby side and is great with ball in hand. He also keeps the scoreboard ticking over when he kicks for post. Both boys also play cricket, Zarrin for the College 2nd XI side when he is not competing on the athletics field, while Mikhail is an opening bowler and top order batsman for the Prep 1st XI side and has also been included in an Eastern Province winter squad side.

Athletics also features up there with the brothers and both of them will be challenging for the “Victor Ludorum” in their respective age groups when the athletics season comes around in the third term. They are both very good sportsmen, yet remain humble and very likeable young men and they are most definitely wonderful ambassadors for Woodridge. Mikhail (left) and Zarrin Lindoor have been selected to represent the Eastern Province u.13A and u.18A hockey team respectively. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
