Hy is so geskok, dat hy nou traumabehandeling moet ondergaan.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE MAKES READING FUN Reading and writing is fun! And what better way to learn about the alphabet than to dress as a royal Kicking King or sparkly Water Witch? Two terms of exploring the 26 letters of the alphabet were celebrated in style by St Francis College Grade 0 and 00 pupils when they spent a day in costume each choosing a favourite Letterland character and wearing an outfit to match. The playground was a swirl of colour, giggles and happy faces as Quarrel some Queens marched about with zippy Zig Zag Zebras, while curious Clever Cats chased Robber Reds. WATERKANTSTRAAT VS WATERLOOSSTRAAT

Inwoners moedeloos gekla oor vrot waterpype MONIQUE BASSON ’n Vuisvoos waterpyp het nou die soveelste keer in Waterkantstraat, Wavecrest gebars en derduisende liters skoon water straat-af laat stroom. Dít, onderwyl omgekrapte inwoners vir ure sonder ’n druppel water moes klaarkom.

G4S stops criminals in their tracks THE swift actions of two security guards from G4S stopped a criminal in his tracks minutes after he robbed a man at knife point. According to a.o Petra Els the incident occurred at approximately 11:25 on Thursday. “The victim was walking along the Aston Bay Road in the direction of Lootspark when two unknown men attacked him with a knife and robbed him from his cellphone and cash. The victim managed to escape with two minor cuts on his hand and throat respectively. “The suspects ran away in the direction of Bantu Holomisa Street. The victim managed to get the attention of two G4S security guards who were patrolling the area.”

Wilfred Sibagu pursued the suspect on foot while Abie Tony went around the block to cut the suspect off. They managed to arrest the one suspect and recover the stolen goods. The 25-year-old suspect from Pellsrus was detained at the police station and a case of robbery was opened. The police are still looking for the second suspect. “The Jeffreys Bay Police would like to congratulate G4S for their arrest,” said Els. “We also thank all the other security companies for their continuous assistance. We are privileged to have an excellent working relationship with each one of them.”

Public toilets out of order due to vandalism MONIQUE BASSON THE public toilets opposite the museum in Bureau Street could win an award - as the worst toilets in Humansdorp, an irate resident claims. This accolade is the result of wanton vandalism, says Henk Boland. “The appalling conditions are beyond a joke and the toilets are an absolute disgrace. It reflects very badly on the town.” Windows are broken, toilet bowls and cisterns are smashed and fixtures and fittings are pulled from the walls. Rubbish is also strewn all over the place. “This type of vandalism is senseless and brainless. Ratepayers are having to fork out for mindless idiots,” says Boland. “Something needs to be done about the problem as the summer approaches and numerous buses and tourists will travel through the town.” Raccinne Khan, chairperson of the Humansdorp Tourism Office, says: “Disgusting is putting is mildly. I was always so ashamed at the state of that part of the area in Humansdorp. No human being can stand the terrible stench of rubbish mixed with human excrement. Municipal officials involved should be put to the test to make use of that facility - just for one unbearable minute. “It is so tragic. You will not even find a stray dog sleeping in and among that dump.” According to municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, this is due to a serious shortness of cleaning staff. “The public toilets belong to the municipality and are maintained by the Department of Cleansing and Parks,” says Sobele. “The challenge is, on top of having only two staff members that are responsible for the cleaning of the three pub-

lic toilet facilities in Humansdorp, the taxi rank is not occupied at the moment. Unlike the taxi rank next to the Cultural Centre, which has taxi operators and their management present who look after the property, the taxi rank near the museum is vulnerable. “Because we only have two staff members, the focus tends to be where the facilities are optimally used.”

Unblocking of housing projects will help minimise informal settlements “IT is disappointing that the Kouga Council was not given the opportunity to respond to the election propaganda released by the DA last week.” This is according to Kouga mayor Booi Koerat in response to articles published in various newspapers with regard to the poor sanitation in Kouga. “It is, for example, not true that four children have drowned at the KwaNomzamo sewerage treatment plant. While we are grateful that the Kouga Express picked up on this serious error and rectified it, the same cannot be said for other papers which published this misinformation as if it were fact,” said Koerat. “Informal settlements are a reality across our country. It is also a challenge in Kouga, especially because of the tremendous influx of job seekers. The Census 2011 shows that Kouga has the highest population growth rate in the Eastern Cape. The population increased from 71 390 (2001) to 98 588 (2011), with a growth rate of 3,2% compared to the 0,4% growth rate of the province as a whole.” According to Koerat, the municipality constantly has to balance this demand with the need to maintain and improve basic services to established residents. “I can give residents the assurance that Kouga will not back down from this challenge. The Census 2011 shows that the vast majority of local households already have access to basic services. Basic services such as water and

sanitation are also offered free to informal communities such as Pola Park and Shukushukuma,” said Koerat. “Communal taps and the bucket system may not be ideal, but they are merely interim measures. The process of formalising these areas has already started.” A total of 313 erven are being plotted out in Polla Park and Shukushukuma so that fullyserviced houses may be built for these communities. Those who cannot be accommodated there will be eligible for houses in other areas. Almost 9 000 houses have been approved for low-income families in our area. Our first priority is putting in place the necessary bulk infrastructure so that residents won’t have to struggle for water, sanitation or electricity in the years to come. “The total required to address bulk infrastructure backlogs in our previously disadvantaged communities is R480-million. This backlog is not unique to Kouga. It is a reality in all municipalities because of the skewed development that took place pre-1994,” said Koerat. “This backlog cannot be rectified overnight, but Government has been addressing it steadily. R62-million has been made available in this financial year towards eliminating the backlog in Kouga and will pave the way for 5 000 houses to be built. “There are also ongoing discussions between the municipality, provincial and national government to secure additional funding to eliminate the remaining backlog.”

Trashy fashion show is back MONIQUE BASSON GREEN is the new black - at least at the trashiest fashion show in town that is back for its second year. Unleash your imagination and start creating the most unusual and beautiful garments ever seen. Why not make a ball gown from cans, a dress featuring coffee filters or display your love of music by sewing together pages of piano sheet music? Or make an outfit using paper plates, wrapping paper, paper sacks, duct tape or recyclable trash bags. Global Leadership Academy (GLA), in conjunction with Fountains Mall, is set to host the second Recycled Fashion Show next month. There will be popcorn, sweets and drinks for sale before the show, just like in a real movie theatre. The show is aimed at encouraging youth and adults of all ages to get creative and construct outfits made entirely from recyclable materials for a chance to win great prizes. All fashion show entries may contain only recyclable material such as tin, cans, metal, plastics and paper. Businesses and individuals in and around Jeffreys Bay can sponsor or enter a dress at a cost of R300 each. Companies that enter an outfit, will have the opportunity to put up advertising material or hand out flyers at the fashion show. After the fashion show the public will have the chance to vote for their favourite dress. Votes can be placed in a ballot box and will be counted by an independent person with the winner being announced in the Kouga Express on September 19. The fashion show will take place at the old Fountains Mall cinema on September 13 from 18:00 and on September 14 from 09:00 to 12:00. Apart from the fashion show there will be a night market on the Friday from 18:00. Stall holders are welcome at a cost of R70 for adults and R30 for children. The items sold at the market must be handmade. No food stalls, except for pancakes and cupcakes, will be allowed. There will also be a cash for junk competition, second-hand clothes sale, a kids recycling competition and lots of fun activities for the children with nice prizes up for grabs. Funky Frogs will be open for the evening to keep the little ones busy while their parents are enjoying the fashion show. For information or entry forms for the fashion show, contact Lizette Kemp at 0 082 323 4491 or send an e-mail to kemplizette@yahoo.com.

Rotary to host 3rd annual art exhibition THE Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay is set to host its third annual Spring Art Exhibition at 10 Da Gama Street on September 27. Artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students are invited to take part in the exhibition, expressing the theme of the current Rotary year visually. The theme for 2013/14 is Change Lives. All artwork has to be submitted by September 18. With this exhibition, the Rotary Club endeavours to raise money for various Rotary

projects and to recognise and encourage artistic talent in the Kouga region. “Rotary supports the use of art as a catalyst for promoting the values of responsible living, service and peace,” says Dave Kan. To enter the event an artwork conforming to specific guidelines must be submitted. To enter and to obtain a blank canvas that must be used, contact Gitta Syefert at 0 082 495 8630 or visit Francel at Moore Stephens at 15 Oosterland Street, Jeffreys Bay.

Students to host Love Feast VICTORY Gap Year students are once again set to host their annual Love Feast on October 17 for the underprivileged children in the Tokyo Sexwale informal settlement. According to Stephen Tearoe, the feast will consist of an afternoon of blessing upon the lives of these children. “We will strive to show them the bigger dream than the four walls of the informal

township they are living in.” However, to make a success of the event, they are in dire need of donations from businesses and individuals. All money raised will go towards the event and any excess money will be allocated to Victory4All. For more information or to make a donation, visit http://www.indiegogo.com/ projects/love-feast.

THE first-ever Cobra Design Competition, which called for exciting new cutting-edge and eco-conscious tap and mixer designs, drew to a close on August 22 with four exceptionally talented designers being recognised for their outstanding pieces of industrial design.

He says Edge aimed to successfully marry sustainability with a timeless design. “Embracing the digital age and utilising digital systems to monitor, manage and create a general awareness on water usage was also a big factor in the design. The iconic Michael Jackson ‘lean’ came later in the process, but added a critical as-

Both first prize winners for this competition are currently living in PE and beat off numerous entries from all over the country. Winners Andrew Mboyi for Edge in the student designer category and Leigh Mclaren for Ceramic Lace in the professional/other category both were awarded R30 000. Ramielle de Jager, Cobra Product Manager, says the standard of entries exceeded expectations, with designers really taking the brief to heart. “Andrew’s electronic Edge met the brief perfectly. Although electronic taps aren’t new, they’re mostly designed for and used in commercial buildings. Yet it is in residential homes where they could be most beneficial in terms of saving energy and water. That’s what made Edge so brilliant – it was designed with the homeowner in mind.In the professional category, Leigh’s Ceramic Lace was undeniably innovative and an unexpected design concept as far as the aesthetic went. It was very different from Edge, but Andrew Mboyi accepting his cheque from Peter in its own way met the briefing require- Hamilton.

Leigh Mclaren is a candidate architect at b4 Architects in Port Elizabeth, and passionate about design. “Apart from ecological awareness, my mixer, Ceramic Lace, was inspired by ceramic as a material,” says Mclaren. “Ceramic is at the forefront of bathroom design, but it also has its roots in South African art. This allows the mixer to be more than just a functional element, and representative of its time and place.”

C hlidanthus – tthe he sscent cent o pring Chlidanthus off sspring WHAT is it with the spring season that gets us all excited? Yes, there’s that element of new life and the prospect of new beginnings, but there’s also a wonderful sensory appreciation for nature – new blossoms, their scents, their beautiful prettiness and their promise of soon-to-grow fruit. As floral themes pop up everywhere – from fabric ranges to school projects – you may want to join in the flower-power brigade by planting bulbs that love flowering in September and October when spring is at its peak. Chlidanthus, with their incredibly sweet, citrusy fragrance, should be your first port of call when choosing a bulb to really make you feel like spring has sprung. Known as the perfumed fairy lily, C. fragrans is the species available to gardeners (it’s also known as the Peruvian daffodil for its origin in the Peruvian Andes), a species guaranteed to fill your home with the exhilarating aroma of the new season. C. fragrans’ funnel-shaped yellow flowers are a striking little collection of petals, 10cm in diameter, on 20cm long spikes. Because the flowers appear before the leaves there’s nothing for them to hide behind – just bloom after bloom, about three or four on a stem. The Greek word from which Chlidanthus is derived – chlide, meaning opulence – is indicative of the strong statement these blooms can make. For your own garden of opulence, plant these bulbs (which should be for sale in August and September) in an area of full sun to semi shade, 4cm below the ground, and 8cm apart from one another, in friable soil containing nutritious, old compost. This should be done in early spring (September and October) for best results.

If planting directly in the garden, consider lining a walkway with these plants so that the scent carries you along your walk, or on a terrace at eye level so that you’re instantly hit by the scent as you pass by. Alternatively, pots are a great way to carry the scent indoors when the flowers begin to bloom. What’s more, indoors you have less chance of these plants being pestered by the snails and slugs that love attaching themselves to Chlidanthus. The bulbs will go into a dormant state between April and June, so if you wish to lift them, do so at the end of this period, in the month of June. Offsets should be kept for planting, although patience may be required with these, as they usually take three years to flower. The same patience may be necessary when waiting for winter to end so that you can start planting your favourite sweet-smelling yellow petals.

KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 29 AUGUST 2013

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Frikkie Sutherland Voorsitter AfriForum Jeffreysbaai

Not knowing many people in Jeffreyts Bay I am trying to find a person who will assist me with some work on my bicycle. This would entail very minor welding and adapting attachments to strengthen the bike for my trip inland through the mountains. Ideally, some-

body in Jeffrey’s Bay with welding facilities and a workshop. I would be most grateful for any assistance. Rob Lindegger 082 920 4827 rob.lindegger@gmail.com

Cycling through Africa I am a sixty-five year old gentleman bicycling through Africa. I have been in Jeffreys Bay now for a few months and will soon be heading towards Cape Town, en-route for Namibia and countries north.

Laurika Nieuwenhuis Inwonersvereniging

MARIETTE HERMANN CARS rushing, babies crying, waves crashing, dogs barking and an owner’s constant issuing of commands to “Walk on”. Just imagine you are the one listening to all of these things at the same time. Then imagine those sounds have been amplified many times louder than what you as a human being are used to. Add to this a sense of smell so keen that a walk down the street encountering people, dogs and cars is like walking into a fragrance shop and being spritzed from head to toe by all the sales ladies at once. Wouldn’t you just rather go home when being exposed to this than deal with the drama and overstimulation of your senses? This and so much more goes on in our dog’s world each and every day. Some dogs deal better with this overstimulation than others. For dogs that have been socialised from a young age, these sights, sounds and smells can be a very pleasant experience signalling yet another new adventure just waiting to happen. For dogs that have not been socialised from a young age this could represent the most frightening experience of their lives. What is socialisation and how do I socialise my dog? Socialisation means training your dog to accept new people, animals, and places. First, establish a strong bond between you and your dog at home. It is very important for the dog to be able to trust you enough to know that you will never place it in harm’s

way and to look to you if unsure of a situation. Once you have a relationship of mutual respect and your role as compassionate leader is clear then you and your dog can go out and explore the world together. Start by introducing your dog to strangers. Tell him to sit and when someone comes up to greet him, give him a treat so that he starts to associate the meeting with a positive experience. Make sure you introduce your dog to nonthreatening and ordinary dressed individuals first. When he is comfortable with them, move on to elderly people with walking aids, kids, people wearing hats, glasses or carrying grocery bags. Take your dog out to all kinds of different places. Always treat your dog when it displays a behaviour that you would like to be enforced in future. Even non-routine stops at the vet’s would also be beneficial. Whenever you drive or walk past the vet, pop in and let the receptionist greet and treat your dog. This will greatly enhance the veterinary visit experience for everyone. Whenever you meet other dogs and they are displaying non-threatening behaviour, allow your dog to interact, sniff or even growl at the dog. It is their means of communication and an exchange must take place between dogs to acknowledge each other or express personal space boundaries. Once an appropriate exchange of sniffs has happened, treat your dog and reinforce this positive experience by praising your dog. It is also ideal to bring your dog to a dog daycare facility or dog

play park like the one we have in Jeffreys Bay. Dogs really enjoy their canine friends and learn much more from their own species than what we alone can teach them. Remember, it is a scary but very exciting world out there for your dog, so try to make every experience for him as pleasant as possible.

Readers can send their dog behaviour-related questions to mariette@sirwoofalot.co.za. The question asked the most, will be published in the Kouga Express on the last Thursday of each month. Mariëtte Hermann is a qualified veterinary nurse and the owner of Sir Woofalot in Jeffreys Bay.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

We test the Nissan Qashqai+2 THE Qashqai is quite a tongue-twister to pronounce, but when Nissan decided to bring it out as a seven-seater they, fortunately, kept the naming simple and just added +2 to it. And apart from the extra two seats which result in the Qashqai +2 being a bit longer, the +2 is very similar in looks to the 5-seater Qashqai. The Qashqai+2 offers all the styling and intelligence of Qashqai, with the additional versatility of the seven-seat configuration. A Google search on the meaning of the word Qashqai (pronounced kas-kaai) revealed that it is named after an Iranian tribe of nomads. Being a big fan of any vehicle remotely looking like an SUV, not to mention one with seven seats, the Qashqai+2 set my Mom’s taxi tickboxes in overdrive - to such an extent that I decided to let the non-existent nomad in me come out for the day and take to the long road, even if for just a day’s outing to Jeffreys Bay and Stormsriver. Did I mention it has seven seats - two rows of seats - do you know how handy that is when you have two children - one a teenager and the other nine going on 30. An extra row of seats can be as effective as the Berlin wall in keeping warring parties apart, and while the back row is way too small for any normally built adults to sit comfortably in for longer than two minutes, if at all, it is perfect for any little person under the age of 12. The middle row of seats also has a beautifully curved design, accentuated by the armrest in the middle. So while the children each busied themselves in their row of seats, I enjoyed the drive

on the open road, in my favourite high seating position, with all the controls I needed for the sound system on the steeringwheel at my fingertips. That’s anyway how it was until about 10km outside Port Elizabeth when my teenager discovered she could play music through her phone over the sound system. The Quashqai+2 is available in two models, i.e. the lower spec 1.6l and the more powerful 2.0L Acenta. Exterior One wouldn’t think that this car houses 7 seats. It looks compact, and hardly bigger than a sedan, but with curves in all the right places to give it a SUV look. The Qashqai+2 also comes standard with sporty brushed metal roof rails and privacy glass. Interior The comfortable interior is enhanced by very handy storage compartments, like the compact second row armrest that converts into a storage box for the third row passengers and the cargo carrier in the boot. The Nissan Qashqai+2 offers an impressing variety of seating and cargo combinations, with the second and third rows of seat which can be folded down separately, all together or organised by zone. The two front seatbacks have expandable pockets, giving the second row of passengers a good amount of space for magazines, games or CD’s or whatever else they like to take with them. The under seat drawer in the higher spec

Accenta model hides away items like a camera or MP3 player. Ride With the commanding high driving position and increased visibility you are sure to feel completely in control. Due to its clever design and layout it also has a compact feel inside without being cramped. Everything is within easy reach. The steering wheel feels good under the fingers. This vehicle was perfect for the mom’s taxi route on my daily commute. Out on the open road, it can be driven with confidence as it feels sturdy on the road with good power for overtaking. It looks like an SUV but drives and parks like a sedan. The road handling is excellent. The suspen-

sion is neither too soft nor too hard, but just right on the long journey as well as the speedbumps of the urban communte. Safety The Nissan QASHQAI+2 has been awarded the maximum 5-star EURO NCAP rating for adult occupant protection. Every QASHQAI+2 comes standard with six airbags and ISOFIX child anchors. Crossways to host Rhino Run THE Crossways Farm Village will host a Rhino Run at Crossways Farm Village development on September 22, World Rhino Day. The run - consisting of 6km, 12km and 20km - forms part of a national trail running event which was inspired by a terribly sad poaching event which occurred at Kariege Game Reserve in 2012. This year there will be 7 Rhino Runs across South Africa to be held in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Kenton, East London, Bloemfontein, Gauteng and Durban. All 7 runs will be held on the same day, making this the largest

trail running event in South Africa. The Rhino Run is the brainchild of Sian O’Keeffe, a Port Elizabethan trail runner and now partner in the event company Free Spirit Adventures. But it could not have been brought to life without the efforts of the various event organisers around South Africa who gave of their time and energy to make the dream a reality: Quantum Adventures in Cape Town, Pure Adventures in Bloemfontein, Riverside Sports Trail in Durban, Backyard Adventures in East London, and Race Time in Gauteng. The Rhino Run is aimed at

everyone – both the hardcore trail runners who will run the longer distances, as well as families and the ‘less fit’ who can do the shorter distance fun run/ walk. The beneficiaries for 2013 are OSCAP (Outraged South African Citizens Against Poaching), The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, and the Rhino Injection Fund, administered by the Wilderness Foundation. The Port Elizabeth edition of the Rhino Run promises to give all entrants an awesome day out in the countryside. Come and enjoy great trail runs in a beautiful location and know

that your support will be helping in the fight against rhino poaching. There will be live entertainment, a jumping castle and jungle gym, as well as refreshments on sale. This is a family event, so bring the kids. On the day registrations opens at 08:30, with the pre-race briefing at 08:30am and the race staring at 09:00. Entry fees are R80 (6km), R120 (12km) and R160 (20km). Amazing lucky draw prizes will be up for grabs. To register or for more information, visit their website www.rhinorun.co.za.

Local surfer girl comes out tops

MMA Smith from Jeffreys Bay claimed first place in the u.20 Girls division at the third event of the Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS held in Cape Town over the weekend.

Smith was a firm favourite in the u.20 Girls, and it was no surprise that she took the win with relative ease from her competitors. Smith put on a show for the eager spectators, making a long day at the beach all worth the while. Fans couldn’t stop talking about her surfing, both at the beach and on social media, describing her surfing as “shredding with style that would put many guys to shame.” “So stoked! Just won the Billabong Pro junior in Cape Town! Yeow!. Thank you Lord,” the Billabong team rider tweeted shortly after her win. “Thank you for all the support. All glory be to God,” she later posted on Facebook. Other top junior surfers from the Eastern Cape also did not disappoint, with huge turns and shorebreak punts the order of the day.
