Volgens ’n ontstelde inwoner, Lynette Lombaard, is daar skaars enige voëllewe by die dam in Apiesdraai oor.

Dis gratis. www.mobilitate.co.za.

Humansdorp girls on their way to Germany for Rotary FOUR high school girls from Humansdorp will join 25 other learners from the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and North West in a six week Rotary cultural exchange program to Germany. They have been selected by the Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay and will depart on November 29 for Frankfurt. Chanté du Plessis, Micheala Japhta, HabreAnn Krige and Lene Prinsloo, all in Grade 10 at Humansdorp Secondary School learnt about the Rotary short term exchange programme and were encouraged to apply by their class teacher. They are all excited about what lies ahead, including flying for the first time. They will be hosted in various parts of Germany by the families of German students who recently completed their stay in South Africa as part of the Rotary exchange programme. Chante said this is an amazing opportunity to broaden their horizons. “I love challenges and can’t wait to learn more about Germany and the German people. I can already speak some German and am determined to learn the

language properly while I am there.” “After spending time with our respective host families, we will go on a 12 day tour together. We will be skiing in Austria, visit the Christmas Market in Berlin as well sight-seeing Munich. We cannot wait to see snow!” Chante’s father passed away in May, and she almost backed out of the trip. “I then realised how much he would have wanted me to go and I want to make the most of this tour for his sake,” she said. “Our families have been completely supportive and are very proud of us. They are happy to make sacrifices so that we can pay for our airfares and tour expenses. Once there, our host families will take care of our living expenses.” Rotary base their selection on the candidates’ individual personalities and suitability as ambassadors for their country and the Rotary organisation. For more information on the Rotary short term exchange programmes contact Ted Pope on e-mail thepopes@iafrica.com or 0 083 650 1594.

YOUR PROPERTY QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Paving the way for common problems OUR panel is often asked to deal with a variety of issues relating to sectional title complexes, from problems between neighbours to maintenance of the common property. This week’s reader question is a classic example of the latter. The reader explains that he has owned and lived in his unit for some time. Approximately two years ago, he approached the trustees of the complex about paving a dusty and unusable area adjacent to his unit. He was well aware that the area formed part of the common property and offered to use the contractor responsible for other building work in the complex to ensure its uniform appearance. The reader accepted the fact that the paving would be to the benefit of the body corporate and other residents, even though he paid for it. The trustees approved of this action and the managing agent confirmed in writing that he could proceed, which he duly did. During the past year, some paving outside two other units collapsed (having been laid many years ago by owners long gone) and the body corporate paid for the repair work.

However, the body corporate has subsequently advised that future repairs to collapsed paving in common areas will have to be paid for by the owners of the units lying adjacent to the relevant area. Understandably, the reader is concerned about the trustees’ approach since the paving he had done is considered common property and does not form part of his unit. He questions whether such a determination is valid and, if so, how one would impose this responsibility on a new owner if the unit were to be re-sold. The common property is the portion of a sectional title scheme that does not form part of any section, says Wanda Hayes from Huizemark Jeffreys Bay. “Some examples of common property would include driveways, parking bays, garages, swimming pools and walkways.” Hayes says the common property is jointly owned by all the section owners and it is controlled by the body corporate. “In terms of the Sectional Titles Act, the responsibility for the maintenance of any common property lies with the body corporate.”

This entity must arrange for the maintenance to be effected and should also pay for the work that needs to be done, says Hayes. Herman Pieterse from Jan Visser Attorneys in Jeffreys Bay says the Act places an obligation on the body corporate to maintain the common property. “This obligation makes it clear that the trustees cannot decide that the unit owners are now responsible for the maintenance of certain portions of the common property.” Pieterse says this includes the paved areas outside their units. “The fact that the reader offered to have the paving done and paid for it does not change this situation.” Similarly, says Pieterse, it would not be possible to bind a third-party purchaser of a section to maintaining a common area outside his or her unit. “The reader should certainly raise this issue with the body corporate and clarify the situation before repairs are actually required. Action now will help to avoid a potentially unpleasant situation in the future.” Send your property-related questions to pr@fullstopcom.com or join Property Poser on Facebook.

Fun Walk and more at Port St Francis ESTI STEWART CHANCES of finding rhino’s in St Francis might be slim, but don’t let that put you off in joining this Saturday’s Run for Rhino’s in celebration of the second World Rhino Day on September 22. St Francis Tourism and St Francis Sport invites you to a 5km or 10km walk (you can run if you want to as this is no race) that will start at 09:00 from Port St Francis. Safe parking is available and the event will finish here as well. The route will go through the St Francis Field Estate as the organisers obtained special permission for this special event. 5km walkers will walk a loop through the air field before they return to the Port and the 10km participants will exit the air field and go through the Irma Booysen Reserve, via Da Gama Road onto the beach, down to Shark Point and back to Port St Francis. All ages and fitness levels will be able to participate. Take out: The organisers kept the “pothole situation” in mind - participants will be allowed to swop their heels for takkies once they reach St Francis Drive! Bring a well marked

bag to put your shoes in and we will keep it for you. A few fun prizes will be up for grabs - one for the most outrageous outfit and the one who finishes the walk in anything but takkies, or the kids who can blow a vuvuzela the loudest or a look-alike-outfit! All to create awareness of these animals that once freely roamed our country. While you wait for every body to finish, meals at any of the restaurants at Port St Francis can be enjoyed, or enjoy your own picnic basket on Squid Square. As it is Heritage Day an educational talk about Wildlife Conservation and Marine Conservation will be held at 13:00 in the Port St Francis Yacht and Ski Boat Club until it is time for the Heritage Day Fun Fishing Competition for Kids from the jetties. Teams of four can take part and fishing will be allowed between 14:00 and 16:00. The entry fee for the walk is R20 per person. The entry fee for the fishing competition is R100 for the team of four - bait will be provided. Rugby fans... watch the match at the Skiboat Club while your family enjoys the outdoors! So dust off your shoes and be at Port St Francis on Saturday! For more information, email esti.stewart@vodamail.co.za or phone 0 073 825 0835. .

Celebrities hit Sixes for charity SOME Some of the biggest names in sport and entertainment will come out to bat for charity at the Celebrity Cricket Sixes tournament in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, September 24. Spectators at Kemsley Park will see a host of former national sportsmen and celebrities face off in 10 six-a-side matches in aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa and JAG Foundation. Organiser Laurence Finn said the positive response to last year’s inaugural event in PE had made it the natural choice as kick-off venue for the nationwide tour, which consists of six tournaments. “Every one of the players has given his time for free. They realise this is for a great cause as well as a lot of fun.” Finn said each of the six teams would be captained by a national cricket legend while the remainder of the team would be made up of a provincial cricketer, rugby legend, two noncricketers and a local businessman. He said Dave Callaghan, Eldine Baptiste, Kenny McEwan, Pieter Strydom and Rudi Bryson are among the legends “selected” to lead a team. They will be assisted by Chevrolet Warriors players such as Corbyn Dolley, Reece Williams and Basheer Walters.

According to Finn, the cricketers would either be helped or hindered in their quest for victory by former Springbok rugby players Chad Alcock, Robbie Kempson and De Wet Barry as well as EP Kings team-mates Jaco Engels, Jaco van Schalkwyk and Mzwandile Stick. “The funny part is that it’s the rough, tough rugby players who are most afraid of the little red ball.” Adding to the fun will be sundry sportsmen like Olympic pole-vaulter Okkert Brits, javelin-thrower Philip Spies, former national superbike champion Arushen Moodley, racing driver Shaun Watson-Smith, golfer Titch Moore, wrestler Mark Beale and national jetski champion Brett Armstrong. Former Mr South Africa Denver Burns, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s communications director Roland Williams and Cricket SA match referee Dev Govindjee are some of the businessmen who round out the teams. Finn said the Hong Kong Sixes-style tournament would provide entertainment for the whole family. “Six overs a side is the fastest form of cricket, so it’s fun and full of action.
