Police garage one of the best MONIQUE BASSON

THE Jeffreys Bay Police Auxiliary Garage was named one of the best police garages in South Africa. Under the management of w.o. Louiga Louw, he and his dedicated team, achieved an overall second place - a great honour for such a small garage which faced tough competition from much bigger competitors. According to Louw, who leads by example and is hands-on involved, this achievement would not have been possible without his dedicated team. “Together we service and maintain an average of 30 vehicles a week,” says Louw. “Production standards are set at 90%; we regularly exceed this standard.” Brigadier Neil Jantjies said: “We commend them for this wonderful achievement. It is their duty to ensure that there are enough vehicles on the road to effectively serve the community and they have not disappointed us. “Although they came second, the sky is the limit. They now know the challenges they face and can only improve on that - coming out tops next year.”

Besoek Sanccob se webtuiste by www.sanccob.co.za vir inligting oor die aannemingsproses.

Boer (44) ‘was alom geliefd’ ODETTE KEMP “HOE ’n mens lewe, praat harder as woorde as jy leef soos Eppie geleef het – hy was ’n goeie boer en ’n unieke mens.” Eppie, by wie breinkanker vyf jaar gelede gediagnoseer is, is verlede Donderdagnag in Patensie dood.

Local develops career through training THE Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm development brought some welcome winds of change for a once struggling Pellsrus resident.

M atrone w il o ues g oeie Matrone wil oues goeie llewe ewe g ee gee MONIQUE BASSON “OU mense is kosbaar en spesiaal.

Eden Syce is one of many community members who benefitted trough training and skills development - a critical area in the Renewable Energy Industry. Originally employed as a general worker, Syce is now employed as a Quality Assistant and can pride himself on a number of achievements, as well as a satisfying job that enables him to support his family. Over the last seven months he has completed and rated highly in a number of courses including a week’s ISO 9001 training in Pretoria, which encompassed the implementation and evaluations of quality systems. Having achieved almost 80% in the exams, his confidence has increased in proportion to his training. “Since I’ve been working on this project my self-discipline and confidence have improved enormously, as well as my attitude towards life’s challenges and handling my responsibilities, both at work and in my personal life,” said Eden Syce, Quality Assistant at Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. Other training and competencies included Health and Safety Representation, First Aid, Fire Fighting, Rigging and Slinging and Scaf-

fold Erection. “My responsibilities entail the implementation and evaluation of quality management systems for all civil and concrete works and activities, the recon and control of bolt packs used in reinforced concrete foundations to anchor wind turbines, as well as general office administration,” said Syce. “Job creation cannot be seen in isolation and as such we regard skills development as an essential component for this Project,” said Mark Pickering, General Manager of Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm.

Strydom bedryf sedert 1995 ’n mediese-praktyk in Joubertina.

‘Kuku’ about chicken? MONIQUE BASSON IN search of an ice cold beer after driving endless kilometres through one of the driest areas in Tanzania - where water had dried up months before - traditional kuku and Mishkaki made for an unexpected and unforgettable culinary experience. With a side order of beer of course. As Paul and Maria Eberhard entered Old Shinyanga in Tanzania, they were greeted by a welcome sight: a “Kilimanjaro” (beer) sign. “We stopped in the middle of the road to ask where we could get some cold beer. As we enjoyed the first sip, young and old gathered around us,” says Paul. “The local veterenaren wanted to know if we were hungry and offered us some ‘kuku’, which is chicken. When we said yes, things got out of hand. The veterenaren screamed three words and within minutes a local came rushing towards us with his bicycles carrying chickens in a basket on the back. “It was then that I remembered that the hundreds of children along the road would always come to us screaming ‘kuku, kuku, kuku’. Maria, who grew up on a farm, knew exactly which was the biggest, freshest and youngest chicken to choose for our supper that night. “After five minutes the best ‘kuku cooker’ in town set off to prepare our chicken for a mere R20.” While patiently, but hungrily, waiting for their supper, the Eberhards decided to go for a walk. Passing the little Makuti huts where you can buy anything from light bulbs to shoes, the delicious aroma of freshly prepared ‘mishkaki’ (meat skewers) made the hunger pains unbearable. “With the second cold “Kilimanjaro’ on our table, we enjoyed mouth-watering goat mishkaki. This was followed by ‘chipsi mayai, french fries and eggs - all while the lo-

cals were singing traditional songs,” says Paul. “This meal you eat with a toothpick and local hot chilli sauce.” At around 19:00 they returned to Monty to prepare for the ‘kuku’. “Suddenly all the lights went out and the whole town was covered in darkness. People switched on their cell phones, creating an indescribable atmosphere. This darkness lasted for longer than an hour.

“Two boys brought as a mug of water and soap so we could wash our hands before enjoying our supper - cooked ‘kuku’ with a lot of sauce which they call ‘soup and potato.” “I can hardly explain what went through my head at that moment. I had not had such delicious chicken since I was a small boy. It was one of the best chickens I have had in many years. “Okay, it was somewhat difficult enjoying

the chicken with people looking at you and knowing that the average income of a servant, garden worker or cleaner is R10.” Paul concluded: “We went to sleep that night with wonderful pictures of an unbelievable story and ‘kuku’ in our minds.” The Eberhards are currently in Nairobi awaiting their Ethiopian Visa - more than a 1 000km from their end destination Lalibela in Ethiopia.

Humansdorp show in honour of lost Kouga chief THE Kouga Council has thrown its weight behind national efforts to return the remains of Khoikhoi chief Dawid Stuurman to South Africa. A theatre show, aimed at raising awareness of this legendary chief, will be hosted by the municipality at the Kruisfontein Civic Centre at 14:30 on November 23. Entrance to the show, “The Khoikhoi Struggle”, is free. Born in 1773, Chief Stuurman was one of the first freedom fighters to take up arms against colonialism. He was captured and escaped from Robben Island twice before being sent to the penal colony of Australia. He passed away in Sydney in 1830 and was buried in an unmarked grave. Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said the Council would be lobbying actively for Stuurman’s remains to be returned to Kouga, his place of birth and home to his direct descendants. “The Stuurman name lives on in Kouga. As a Council, we are proud of this heritage. We

will do all we can to pay tribute to the role our people played in creating a free South Africa for all,” the Mayor said. The theatre show, presented by the PE Opera House, aims to raise awareness of the efforts to bring Stuurman home. “We would like to invite all of Kouga to attend this powerful production,” the Mayor said. “The aim is to take the show throughout the country. We are fortunate to be one of the first areas to host a preview.” He said the National Heritage Council (NHC) was working with their Australian counterparts to locate the chief’s remains. Other organisations involved, include the South African Heritage Resources Agency, and the National Prosecutions Authority unit which deals with international repatriation. “As custodians of the area from which the chief descends, the Kouga Council will engage with the NHC to ensure that the local Council and Khoikhoi chiefs play a leading role in the process. We want to ensure that every effort is made to locate and bring our ancestor home.”

’n Afskeidsgeleentheid is reeds gehou.

FOCUS ON: 2014 WESBANK/SAGMJ CAR OF THE YEAR

Will Cayman S make it two in a row for Porsche? THE new Porsche Cayman S probably has the biggest shoes to fill in the running for the 2014 COTY title as its soft-topped sibling, the new Porsche Boxster, took overall 2013 Car of the Year honours. Featuring a more powerful, 3.4litre mid-mounted flat-six engine (239 kW and 370 Nm) which translates into a 5.0-second 0100 km/h sprint time and a top speed of 283 km/h, the ‘baby’ of Porsche’s sports car range is easily able to tackle more expensive sports cars. Its combination of mid-engined handling dynamics, the unique Porsche engine note and drop-dead-gorgeous looks, contribute to what is one of the most refined sports cars on the market The other finalists for the 2014 WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year competition are (in alphabetical order): .2013 Audi A3 Sportback 1.4T FSI Manual .2013 Jaguar F-TYPE 3.0 V6 S .2013 Lexus IS 350 F-Sport .2013 Mercedes Benz A 45 AMG .2013 Peugeot 208 GTi .2013 Porsche Cayman S .2013 Renault Clio4 66kW Turbo Dynamique .2013 Volkswagen Golf 7 1.4 TSI 90kW Comfortline DSG .2013 Volvo V40 D3 Excel

Choosing the winner The next step in the process is a stringent two-day evaluation session to be held in Gauteng in January 2014. Of this evaluation, testing procedures at the world-renowned Gerotek test facility near Pretoria remain a critical aspect and allow the Jury members to assess the cars independently under the conditions individual vehicles would be expected to perform under, with routes and modules designed to test the vehicles in a similar way to what the average consumer would use them. The evaluation days offer the Jury the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the vehicles and specific aspects such as aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money, to name but a few. The Jury will also have access to independent performance test data, comparative pricing and specification data from RGT Smart, as well as comparative parts pricing data, compiled by Malcolm Kinsey. The winner of the 2014 WesBank / SAGMJ Car the Year will be revealed at a gala banquet in February 2013.

Step out for diabetes IT’S time to show your support for the awareness of Diabetes – the countrys quiet KILLER. Did you know that about one in five people over the age of 35 has type 2 diabetes AND more than 50% of these people are unaware that they have this potentially fatal illness? Every eight seconds, someone in the world dies from diabetes-related causes, and within the same eight seconds, two people in the world develop the condition. Port Elizabeth, let’s make a stand – come down to North End Lake on Saturday morning and take part in the Global Diabetes Walk. There’ll be no timing, no positions taken, no pressure on you to perform your best – let’s just see as many people as possible coming down and being active to create awareness for Diabetes in this country and in particular in this city. Your support will help raise much needed funding for the local branch of Diabetes South Africa to help with the awareness

and treatment of diabetes in this region. As an added incentive, all participants are invited to a free Pronutro breakfast and fruit buffet on the morning whilst there are still around 100 entry slots for entrants that will qualify for a free t-shirt and cap. Secure your entry soonest at Brian Bands Sports, News Cafe (Boardwalk) or ideally on www.zports.co.za for online entry and immediate confirmation of your race number. Breakfast is open from 7am on Saturday morning at Lakeside, North End Lake – parking entry onto the lake from Milner Avenue side (sea side end of North End Lake). Bring the whole family (kids 10 years and under are free of charge); pets on leashes also welcome to enter and will receive a Montego goody bag on the morning. See www.zports.co.za/globalwalk for more info or call Michelle on 041 484 7860 for your company bulk entries before Thursday afternoon. On-

line entry is just R40 with kids 10 years and under free of charge and pets (on a leash) at just R5 each. Manual entries welcome on the morning of the event at R50 per person. ORS round 4 not dampened Despite the wet and rainy conditions over the past weekend, the 4th round of the Ocean Racing Series™ was another great success with over 300 entrants braving the conditions and taking part at Hobie Beach. Kirsten Marriott and Daniel Jones continued to impress in the Dis-Chem 1km Ocean Swim with another fine win on Sunday. A new medallist this week was Antonella Saporta who was placed 2nd in the 1km ladies’ swim. In the Dis-Chem 2km swim it was mother of two, Tracy Gous, who claimed her first win of the Series, while Wayne and Jason Jones extended their Series position with another one-

Youngsters ‘rough it’ in the wild SLEEPING under the stars, cooking food on a camp fire and cooling off in a crisp mountain stream were just a few of the memorable highlights on a recent St Francis College outdoor education experience. Excited Grade 4 and 5 pupils packed warm clothes, loads of ‘tuck’, sleeping bags and other adventure goodies before heading off to a farm near the Baviaanskloof to spend two days experiencing nature up close and personal. The pupils participated in a 6km hike through bush, using compasses and maps to navigate their way. They learned about alien tree clearing, how best to measure and make pan pipes from reeds and – most rewarding – took part in a cooking challenge after building up hearty appetites! “The children learn such valuable lessons while camping,” said teacher Janet Campbell. “They are responsible for their own items and space, and contribute to group work while managing themselves and one another in a team environment.” Caelim Harding said he enjoyed his camping experience. “We had such fun! I loved singing around the camp fire and cooking our own food on the fire too.”

two on Sunday. Braving the wet beach conditions, the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk and Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run entrants saw their course slightly shortened because of the lack of sand on the far reaches of Pollok Beach beyond the pipe. Gail Willimott and Keegan Cooke weren’t complaining as they stomped to victory on the morning with Maritza Craig and Juan Slabbert stepping into the gold medal positions in the walk. The Ocean Racing Series returns on Sunday 1st December for Round 5 and the last race for 2013 before the Series starts again on the 12th January for the second half of Season 9. This is particularly enjoyable for the families because of the inclusion of the Crickley Dairy Kids 1km Beach Run and Walk for youngsters up to 12 years of age. Series membership is required at just R50 and can be secured on www.oceanracingseries.com in order to get your Series race number for Season 9.
