Jeffreys Bay #2 surf spot in the world

Cansa Shavathon: To shave or not to shave The votes are rolling in and Annemie Bibb (front) and Ellen Hancke are anxiously await ing their ‘hairy’ fate. They have pledged to shave, cut or colour their wealth of hair for a cure. This all in aid of rasing funds and aware ness for cancer a cause very close to these two women’s hearts as both of them lost loved ones to this illness. These two ladies will only find out their fate on the day of the Shavathon as determined by public votes where local cancer survivor and singing legend Franz Geldenhuys (left) will be waiting for them with scissors and clipper in hand or maybe a spray can or two. See page 5 for the full story.

IT is official - Jeffreys Bay is the number two surf spot in the world. The Cacadu District is home to the 7 Wonders of Our World including luscious evergreen forests, incredible landscapes, gorgeous vistas coupled with superb accommodation, restaurants and activities for families, couples and experienced travellers. Equally as wondrous, is the 4th Wonder of Our World, Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay, home to the world’s best right hand surf break that attracts international surfers and tourists the world over. In a recent study of the world’s best spots by internationally renowned news source, CNN, with the help of Surfing Magazine editors and experts alike, Jeffreys Bay was ranked number two in the world against 49 other great surf spots. Beaten only by the incredible Pipeline of Oahu, Hawaii – Jeffreys Bay has been officially regarded as not only boasting the world’s best right hand break, but also offering “long, fast barrels off an intense point break”. Not only this, but CNN’s report has ranked it ahead of other prestigious surf spots from Australia, Fiji, the USA (both California and Miami), Costa Rica and the Maldives. Residents and visitors alike flock to the beauty of Jeffreys Bay and surrounding areas that offer these world-renowned surf spots, as well as gorgeous nature reserves, top-notch accommodation, restaurants and unspoilt beaches. The area boasts a vineyard and wine farm, a challenging 18-hole, par 72 golf course known as the St Francis Links and is also home to the tallest masonry tower on the South African coast – the Seal Point Lighthouse with a height of 27.75m. .The 7 Wonders of Our World include: Addo (1st Wonder), Baviaans and Gamtoos Valley (2nd Wonder), Grahamstown (3rd Wonder), Jeffreys Bay and St Francis (4th Wonder), Karoo (5th Wonder), Sunshine Coast (6th Wonder) and the Tsitsikamma and Langkloof (7th Wonder).

Sport fields to be upgraded MONIQUE BASSON SPORT fields in the Kouga area is set to be upgraded to the tune of R4-million before the end of June this year. The money forms part of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) made available to the Kouga Municipality. According to municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, the existing sport fields in Kruisfontein and Centerton (Hankey) will be

improved at a cost of R1.5 million respectively. “How the money is spent will be finalised in consultation with the sports clubs that make use of the fields, says Randall. According to Randall, these two sport fields have been prioritised because Kruisfontein’s rugby team plays in the top league in the Eastern Cape, but their field is in such a poor condition that they can hardly play there at all. “Hankey is one of the biggest soccer centres in Kouga, yet their soccer teams have to play at the local rugby field because the Centerton

field is in a poor condition. The remaining R1 million will be used to improve the playing surfaces of sport fields in Patensie, Hankey, Thornhill, Oyster Bay, KwaNomzamo and Pellsrus. “Council also considered Sea Vista for this initiative, however, it is expected that a service provider will be upgrading this sport field as part of its social responsibility. Council is currently in discussion with them, says Randall. “Sport is a powerful vehicle through which our country can achieve its develop-

mental goals. It is about participation. It brings communities together by highlighting what we have in common and bridging cultural divides. It is furthermore a forum to learn skills such as discipline, confidence and leadership, as well as values such as tolerance, cooperation and respect. “Sport can also be a significant economic force and help to provide employment. The funding is for the remainder of the 2013/2014 financial year. The target is to complete the work within the next five months.

Valuation deadline extended THE deadline for the submission of objections to new property valuations has been extended to April 11, 2014. The new general valuations roll for the Kouga municipal area was submitted to the municipality on January 31, 2014. Notifications of the new valuation of properties will The first 11 graduates of Kouga’s lifeguard training programme proudly show their certificates. Local youngsters qualify as lifeguards ELEVEN young men and women from Kouga have officially qualified as surf lifeguards. The new lifeguards received their certificates from Lifesaving South Africa last week. Social Services portfolio councillor, Thandeka Maseti, said the 11 young people were the first successful trainees in a programme initiated by Kouga Municipality in 2012. “In the past we had to use lifeguards from outside Kouga to safeguard our beaches during the festive season. The municipality then initiated the training programme to empower local young people to do this work, she said. “We are proud of the young people who completed the training and excited about the contribution the training programme is making towards improving the lives of our youth. Initiatives such as this have the potential to boost job creation, fight crime and encourage healthy lifestyles. Topics addressed in the training were signal communication, anatomy and physiology, the recognition of potential victims and dan-

ger areas, rescuing drowning victims, artificial respiration, spinal management awareness, general lifeguard duties and first aid. Maseti further applauded Kouga’s senior lifeguards who had handled the training personally. Speaking on behalf of the lifeguards, Paul Makhuphula thanked the Kouga Council for making good on its promise to train local young people as lifeguards. “We pledge to show our appreciation for this opportunity by giving our best when we serve Kouga and the public, he said. Also at the certificate ceremony, Infrastructure portfolio councillor Patrick Kota reminded the young graduates that there was no greater calling in life than “to guard the sanctity of life. He cautioned them that they would face challenges as they made their way in the world but encouraged them to turn challenges into opportunities. A further 18 trainees are expected to graduate later this year.

VISITOR’S CENTRE, TOWN MUSEUM AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP INCUBATION HUB

Historic school building to be restored MONIQUE BASSON ONE of the historic buildings in Twee Riviere - one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Cape nestled between the majestic Tsitsikamma Mountains in the Langkloof Valley - is set to receive a new lease on life. Hundred and ten years later, the derelict Twee Riviere School building which was constructed in 1904, will soon boast a visitor’s centre, town museum and entrepreneurship incubation hub - an enduring solution for a building that has fallen victim to severe vandalism and decay. The year 1954 saw the last learners running through the hallways, but in 1994 the once proud building had fallen into complete ruin. This initiative is being driven and funded by the South African Institute for Objects Conservation in Twee Riviere as a goodwill gesture and in support of the town’s upcoming milestone. According to Adriaan Botha, Registrar at the South African Institute for Objects Con-

servation, the proposed renovation of the school is stimulated by the town’s millennial mark on 14 February next year - celebrating 250 years of existence. “Twee Riviere’s historic school building was entirely gutted, having become a prominent eyesore in a very public part of the town,” says Botha. “In many ways, it has become a structure for which there remains little purpose - unless a new and meaningful civic use can be devised for it, justifying its restoration. “Such a historically significant and centrally located structure can not be reconciled with a town’s commemoration of its past. As an institution which considers Twee Riviere to be its long-term home, we feel compelled to ameliorate this state of affairs and wish to honour the memory of now-elderly, former pupils of Twee Riviere School, some of whom are still resident in this town. “The building will be preserved true to form and original design without modification. We will not adapt or change the plan or design of the school building or the stone

shed in any way, nor will our reinstatement purpose impose on original, historical material. No alterations are intended and the historic accuracy of the architecture will accordingly remain entirely intact. Missing doors, windows, timber work, fencing, electrical wires and items will be reinstated and current surfaces will be renovated.” According to Botha, the staffed visitor’s centre will serve as the town’s reception portal, providing a welcoming face and general information source. “The museum, set to showcase 250 years of local cultural history, has been conceived as a repository for an existing heritage collection and will be steadily expanded and refined over the next ten years. “The entrepreneurs hub will be implemented last and will consist of lightly renovated office space, comprising of the erstwhile schoolmaster’s pre-1950’s family quarters, which may serve as modest facilities permitting young citizens of the town a transient opportunity to venture and launch fledging enterprises with minimum risk.”

The first phase of restorations - securing the school precinct and the beautification of the exterior of the building - is set for January 2015. The complete restoration is estimated at a total cost of up to R730 000. “We foresee that the restored school building will be included prominently on the cultural programme that is being planned for Twee Riviere’s Quarter Millennial festivities during early 2015,” says Botha. The jubilee event also foresees other initiatives, such as the planting of 250 trees leading up to the R62, all aimed at honouring the town’s long history. .The SA Institute for Objects Conservation is a specialist training institute, unique in its home country, and of established reputation as a conservation resource facility. The primary aim of the Institute is to foster expertise in the restoration and conservation of metals, ceramics and paper respectively and, in doing so, to accommodate persons at all levels of attainment - from absolute beginner to trained professional. A Textile Conservation Department is also currently in development.

FOTO:MONIQUE BASSON

CANSA SHAVATHON

To shave or not to shave MONIQUE BASSON THE votes are rolling in and two local residents are anxiously awaiting their ‘hairy’ fate. Annemie Bibb and Ellen Hankce from Jeffreys Bay have pledged to shave, cut or colour their wealth of hair in aid of raising muchneeded funds for cancer - a cause very close to these two women’s hearts, as both of them lost loved ones to this illness. Determined to make a difference, they are challenging residents from all walks of life to help them improve the lives of people with cancer by signing up for the annual Cansa Shavathon that will take place on March 8 at Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay. It is hoped that this challenge to ‘be brave and shave’ will encourage hundreds of residents to join them in shaving or colouring their hair; and by doing this, not only create awareness but also raise funds for cancer research and to care for South Africans with cancer. Annemie has not had her hair cut for two years and her pony tail measures half a metre. “After a massive intervention in my health five years ago, I have lost almost all my hair,” says Hankce. “I was so panic-stricken that I clung to each piece that was still left. “After a year’s struggle, my hair slowly but surely started to grow back. I was so grateful that I really became obsessed with having a healthy bunch of hair. In the beginning, I did not even want to cut my hair - not even a little bit . . . I constantly feared that I would once again lose all my hair.” According to Hankce, she has now realised that it will not happen again. “I turned 60 last year and decided it was time to say goodbye to my long hair. The event, and the courage, however, still kept eluding me. Until now. “One day my friend, Olivia de Lange, who has fallen victim to cancer and recently passed away, told me that she too was obsessed with her hair and was terrified with every little hair that fell out. I realised that as women, our hair defines us. “I believe my hair will help to create a wig or hairpiece for someone who would like to have one. So for me, it is an age thing and also in solidarity with Olivia’s death.” So, what are you waiting for? Put your head on the line and help raise much-needed hair and funds for this worthy cause. Various lucky draws will be up for grabs on the day, as well as a grand price for one ‘shaver’ whose hair is (or was, that is) longer than that of Annemie. Sponsors include Fountains Mall, Amsterdam Hair Studio in Jeffreys Bay, DisChem in Fountains Mall and Die Burger. .This initiative - spearheaded by the Kouga Express, Cansa Jeffreys Bay and Fountains Mall - forms part of the annual Cansa Shavathon that will take place in front of Pick ’n Pay at Fountains Mall from 09.30 on March 8. Residents can either have their heads shaved or sprayed a multitude of colours for a donation towards Cansa. Hair in a pony tail can also be donated before the event. For more information or to take part in the event, contact Monique Basson at 0 082 219 9169, Annemie Bibb at 0 083 657 0505 or Selina van Deventer at 0 042 293 1108. Alternatively send an e-mail to kougaexp@media24.com. Help raise funds and win It all depends on residents whether Annemie Bibb will shave her head or only cut her hair shorter and whether Ellen Hancke will cut her hair or only transform it into a rainbow of colours. Their ‘decision’ will be determined by votes from our readers. SMS either SHAVATHON ANNEMIE CUT or SHAVATHON ANNEMIE SHAVE to 0 45527. The same goes for Ellen Hancke. SMS SHAVATHON ELLEN COLOUR or SHAVATHON ELLEN CUT to 0 45527 Voting closes at noon on February 27. Each SMS costs R20 and funds raised will go towards Cansa. The person who sends in the most votes, will win a goodie hamper valued at R500.

Elfjarige seun ’n regte ‘rekordvraat’ MONIUQE BASSON “HY is ’n regte rekordvrat.
