Motorfietsongeluk laat man kritiek Fondse dringend benodig MONIQUE BASSON

’N

Kouga Express: Donderdag, 19 April 2012

Dít is ondersoek

Residents demand fencing around sewer treatment plant MONIQUE BASSON A DISPUTE over a fence, or rather the lack thereof, has erupted in KwaNomzamo with irate residents demanding constructive action from the Kouga Municipality. “Are the death of three children not enough? Just how many more children and cattle must drown before the municipality will stop ma-

king excuses and start looking after the well-being of its residents?” This is the desperate cry of residents from the informal settlements Tshukutshukma and Phola Park in KwaNomzamo, which are in close vicinity of the sewer treatment plant. The latter is the nearest to the plant. According to community leader, Tshawe Bayisi, they have been struggling since 2000 to have a fence erected around the plant, but with;Community leaders Tshawe Bayisi and Mike Tshayitile at the ‘dangerous’ sewer treatment plant in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp. out any success to date. “We cannot live like this. Every day we fear that yet another child will loss his or her life or that one of our cattle will become victim to the plant,” said Bayisi. “In 2011 a child drowned in one of the dams of the sewer treatment plant, and on another occasion two children playing with card boxes near the plant just went missing. When their parents went looking for them, all they could find were the boxes and some of their toys. It is suspected that these children too drowned in one of the dams, but their bodies were never found.” Bayise continued that apart from the danger of drowning, the water is also not safe for human consump-

tion. “Children do not always understand this and they do not think twice before drinking of the water or swimming in the more shallow dams. This water can, and already has in the past, make them very sick. “Despite numerous phone calls, letters and visits to the municipality nothing has been done to date. We feel that we are being ignored by the municipality.” According to municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, the majority of residents living in Phola Park have encroached on and are currently resident on the property of the sewer treatment plant. “This poses a great challenge for

us,” said Soble. “Having realised the growth of encroachment, we have put up a temporary fence, however, this fence was stolen. “Erecting a permanent structure around the plant is part of the municipality’s future plans, but it is a costly measure which cannot be done overnight. In the meantime we are doing all we can to curb the surge of illegal dwellings, particularly in such hazardous areas.”

fever runs high in Bay ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

T

HE 8th annual Spec-savers Ironman triathlon kicks off this week with an estimated 6000 athletes expected to converge in Port Elizabeth to take part in the three-day event from April 20 to April 22. The main event, the Spec-Savers Ironman, takes place on Sunday, with the Iron Girl South Africa Fun Run on Friday, and the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge, powered by Algoa FM, and the Pritt IronKids on Saturday April 21. There has been significant growth in the event since its humble beginnings with only 420 athletes back in 2004, to the 1772 registered athletes from 48 countries for the triathlon.

World Endurance South Africa Managing Director, Keith Bowler, earlier said that the competition is a major boost to the economy. “The SpecSavers Ironman South Africa brings a financial injection in terms of direct tourism spend estimated at around R50 million.” The host of athletes and tourists descending on the Bay has resulted on a high occupancy at beachfront accommodation and surrounding areas due to the proximity of the event venue, according to Titus Chuene, Marketing Manager at Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. He added, however, that (on Monday) there was still some space available. As can be expected, most of the atletes arriving will come with specific dietary requirements to prepare for the gruelling race, and many of the hotels cater for this with special meals on offer. “Most of the athletes,

especially the pro-athletes, stick to what they know and will prepare their own meals or only eat certain food items on the hotel menus, especially the night before the race,” said Michael Flanagan, co-ordinator, Media & PR of the World Triathlon Corporation. Former Bay resident and SpecSavers Ironman South Africa defending champion Raynard Tissink will also take part in this year’s race. Tissink, who has participated in seven Ironman races in PE and won the competition three times, has relocated to Cape Town recently. Other local celebrities to look out for include Mr South Africa 2010 and former Die Burger Mr PE, Denver Burns, and former Springbok rugby player, Garth Wright. Burns, Wright and his business partner, Gary Stephenson, will be participating on behalf of Ironman 4

According to police spokesperson, w/o Petra Els, the Jeffreys Bay police is still dealing with a number of house break-ins in the Wavecrest area. “Entrance is gained mainly by simply lifting up sliding doors - doors not fitted with special locking mechanisms - breaking windows or by forcing open burglar bars. Negligence of home owners, also contribute to the spike in house break-ins,” said Els. “In a bid to help us fight crime, report any suspicious looking people wandering around to the police. Furthermore, report any suspicious vehicle, anything out of the ordinary -

Explore St Francis and win big ESTI STEWART A MAP, a sealed envelope, a stopwatch and a team is what you will need on Monday, April 30 to win the second Amazing 6312 Race while exploring and enjoying the beauty of St Francis. Teams of up to four can take part in this year’s amazing race, either by foot or using a bicycle. The cyclists will have a further loop to complete, giving teams an equal chance to win. Tasks are easy and fun and this event is the ideal opportunities for families and friends to enjoy a day in the outdoors together. The race will start at Port St Francis at 9am on Monday morning, and will finish there as well. All teams will receive a sealed envelope with all the tasks, giving them the opportunity to strategise the fastest route to the finish line. Although most tasks are fun, participants will also do their bit for the community and the environment - at the Port Hole Restaurant a mountain of vegetables will have to be peeled so chef Ian can make a pot of soup for Aggie’s Soup Kitchen in Sea Vista. As far as the environment is concerned, some recycling needs to be done and there are hungry penguins at Penguins Eastern Cape! For more clues you will have to enter your team to get the envelope! Apart from your bike or walking shoes, teams must remember to bring a camera or cell phone with camera

option, as this some tasks require “documentation.” The best photos will be considered for the Sustainable Seas Trust’s coffee table project, called the Splendour of South African Seas. Teams with children under the age of 16 has to have one adult member. At all times, team members should be within 5m of each other or disqualification might be the order of the day. The entry fee is R100 per team. The safety of bikes will be the responsibility of team members at all times, and traffic rules and regulations have to be obeyed at all times. The fastest team can win great prizes, including restaurant vouchers and a bay cruise. The race is organised by Port St Francis and St Francis Sport. For info or to book your spot, contact Esti Stewart at 0 073 825 0835.

Organisers are hoping for pleasant weather conditions but the South African Weather Service has predicted a cloudy day with showers on Sunday, with minimum and maximum temperatures of 15 and 20. The wind is expected to be moderate southwesterly becoming southerly.

Kontantgewasse geplant dat dit klap MONIQUE BASSON

harde werk.

B

Lede sowel as nie-lede is baie welkom.

Benewens dié 20 nuwe medaljes, het Jamie reeds verlede jaar haar merk by die World Championships of Performing Arts gemaak.

With R74 000 in prize money and the promise of excellent waves at The Point in Jeffrey’s Bay, the entries have been flying in and the contest organisers are well on the way to a full house of entries. This open event comes at a time when the South African surfers are hungry for events, and it incorporates 5 divisions, so everyone can enter. The divisions are Open Men’s (Industry Cup), U20 Boys, U20 Girls, U14 Boys and U14 Girls. Open Division first prize is R15 000. The Industry Cup, which hasn’t been surfed since 2003 (Billabong hold the trophy) is going to be an entertaining component of the event, with surf teams from all over the country entered into the event. Majority of the top surfers in the country are representing their sponsors, and there are going to no

doubt be a few friendly old rivalries coming to the fore. Quiksilver has fielded a strong team of Slade Prestwich and Beyrick De Vries, who placed first and second in the Quiksilver Pro Junior in Durban recently. They are joined by powerful goofy-footer and former WQS event-winner Dan Redman, as well as Dane Patterson, who will be representing from the Quiksilver offices, and who knows how to wet a rail as well. Billabong is equally as strong, with Dale Staples, Sean Holmes, Shaun Payne and Raymond Robertson representing. All four of them are dangerous on right-hand point breaks and Dale, Sean and Shaun all have impressive Jeffrey’s Bay victories under their belts. On paper this looks like a winning team, and they could well be victorious and defend their title, but we all know that paper representation can be way different to what goes down on the beach at contest time. Another danger team is the impressive Volcom crew. Alan Johns and Shane Thorne are fierce competitors who compete to win, while Luke Patterson and Simon Nicholson can both be unbeatable in good waves. They will want to do well, get the silverware from Jeffrey’s Bay and take it

surf event

home with them to Durban. Similarly dangerous is the Firewire team, comprising Ryan Payne, Warren Dean, Craig Els and Ari Kraak. This is another team with extensive Jeffrey’s Bay knowledge, and every one of these guys is a fierce competitor. Any one of them could make it to the final and win the whole event, and as a team they have depth and experience, which is so important in team events. There has been a fairly good start to the season in Jeffrey’s Bay already, and contest organisers are confident that there will be good waves for the event. The contest venue is The Point in Jeffrey’s Bay, a perfect wave in its own right, but often overlooked due to its older brother, Supertubes, always showing off just up the road. The Point provides a perfect canvas for high performance surfing, as well as for solid carving. The event is sponsored by BloodScan, and will be raising much-needed funds for the Supertubes Surfing Foundation. The Foundation has been preserving the waves and beaches of Jeffrey’s Bay since 1999. The Supertubes Surfing Foundation is a joint venture between the local surf clubs and the surf industry in Jeffrey’s Bay.

Worldwide Walk for Women ON April, 29, the Associated Country Women of the World’s (ACWW) local branches will be joining friends throughout the world in an initiative called Women Walk the World, aiming to create awareness and raise funds for the ACWW’s work. Everyone will start her walk at the same time in different time zones. This will result in participants walking at all times during a 24-hour period.
