KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 11 JULY 2013

Paradise Beach causeway still closed AFTER more than two weeks in which no work could be carried out on the causeway linking Paradise Beach and Aston Bay, Environmental Affairs will once again be approached to seek permission for the opening of the mouth to ensure that repair work can continue. It is hoped that the process will be finalised this week. According to DA councillor Brenton Williams, there has been a lot of speculation about the progress on the causeway. “Residents have even taken the law into their own hands and re-opened the causeway during the weekend,” said Williams. According to Williams, there is no truth in the rumour that the contractor has walked off the job and will not be returning. “When it became apparent that the estuary was filling up with water from recent rains, as well as a solstice high tide that breached the closed mouth, a decision was made that it was pointless to continue to pump water

out of the small coffer dams so that work could be done on the culverts,” said Williams. “The agreement was that the causeway would be opened and work would recommence once Environmental Affairs had granted permission to open the mouth or when the mouth naturally opened to the sea. On the day the contractor was tidying up the site in order to re-open the causeway, his heavy vehicle damaged one of the old culverts that needed to be replaced. “The broken culvert then resulted in the causeway being closed as it was clear that it is extremely dangerous to cross the causeway.” The contractor remains committed to finishing the repair work and there is no need to be concerned, said Williams. “The only reasonable solution to the problem is for the mouth of the Seekoei River to be opened and for some water to be drained from the estuary. “In the meantime, it must be appreciated

Rower kry 15 jaar tronkstraf

that residents are using the causeway entirely at their own risk. Without an engineer confirming that it is safe, the municipality cannot take the chance to allow people to use the causeway.” John Wiehan, chairperson of the Paradise Beach Neighbourhood Watch, says the alternative gravel road is a nightmare and near impassable. He is concerned about the reasonable access to emergency and medical facilities. “A few motorists have already gone off the road when it is very slippery and muddy due to rain. Since the closure of the bridge, the road has only once been adequately graded. Most commuters from Paradise have over the past months sustained damage to their vehicles; ranging from relatively minor to near write-offs. Residents are considering bringing a class action suit against the municipality, who is responsible for providing an acceptable, safe alternative route during the upgrading of the causeway.”

WHAT READERS HAVE TO SAY Die saga: Herstel van die brug by Paradysstrand

Causeway leaves residents red under the collar AS the causeway goes from bad to worse and residents of Paradise Beach are fed different rumours, the question is: does anyone know what is happening? A badly maintained causeway has now been rendered impassable. Residents of Paradise Beach, who were promised an improved road in February this year using a nice budget that was allocated for this improvement, now face yet another month of long diversions and dirt roads. The conditions of the roads out of Paradise are shocking - nothing was done to im-

prove them as was promised. What happened to the causeway being open by the end of June - empty promises fed to rate payers at their meeting? What happened to the money? What happened to the contractor? More importantly what will happen to the residents of paradise beach who have to endure increased petrol consumption, wear and tear on vehicles that have to use dirt roads daily? Who is going to step up and sort it out? - Running out of patience

Drie, ses, 12 maande, of miskien so binne 2 jaar as ons gelukkig is.

Kouga summit to tackle abuse FIGHTING abuse will be the focus of a Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) Summit to be held at the Humansdorp Country Club on Tuesday, July 16. The summit is part of the Kouga Municipality’s celebrations of the birth month of former president Nelson Mandela. “July has been declared Moral Regeneration Month in honour of Mr Mandela, who is seen as a founding member of the Moral Regeneration Movement,” said Kouga Speaker Magdalene Dlomo. The MRM encourages people to recommit

themselves to building communities grounded on positive values and to building a caring society in pursuit of creating lasting peace and prosperity in the country. The theme of the summit will be “Strengthening the fight against women, child and drug abuse”. “It will be a platform for all stakeholders to discuss their role in stopping this scourge,” said the Speaker. verlede Dinsdag met DA-lede vergader om die griewe te bespreek wat Van Lingen in Junie 2012 in ’n brief aan Qoboshiyane uitgelig het.

betrokke is,” sê Van Lingen.

Road linking Paradise Beach to Fountains Mall a possibility A road that will connect residents of Paradise Beach, Aston Bay and Marina Martinique directly to the mall, bypassing the Ocean View road, might be constructed in the near future. The road, linked to the Thyspunt development, will be the first infrastructure that needs to be established when the Thyspunt development is announced. The plans detailing the route the road

will follow, have been drafted and will be available when the Thyspunt development is announced. If Thyspunt does not become a reality the road will not be constructed. According to municipal spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall, the road is a future possibility that is being investigated. “Nothing is fixed or finalised yet,” she said.

Will it be victory for Victor? HEATHER LEIGH ARENDS WHILE InFood Coffee Society in Jeffreys Bay is brewing up yet another champion for the Regional Barista Contest, the reigning Eastern Cape champion - placed fifth overall -might lose his title to his fellow barista. Aspiring champion barista, Victor Matinenga who has been working at InFood for two years alongside colleagues Percy Chickwira, Belinda Ruiters and Charles Ngwaroi - who had all previously entered the Eastern Cape Barista Championships and came out victorious - will be entering the annual Regional Barista Contest in Port Elizabeth on July 25. He will be mentored by defending champion Ngwaroi, who is currently placed first in the Eastern Cape and fifth in the country. When Ngwaroi first started working for InFood two years ago, he knew nothing about coffee. But just as he now is going to keep an

close eye on Matinenga, he two was mentored by other Eastern Cape champions from InFood; Chickwira and Ruiters. Ngwaroi trained after hours on his technique and presentation. It took him six months of practice to create the perfect brew from InFood’s chosen magic bean. According to owner Jayne Davies, after intensive research he designed a unique signature drink, called the Patensie Glu wein, using oranges from the region and spiced coffee. “He made history when he managed to come fifth in the country. Charles is the first Eastern Cape barista to gain a place in the nationals. He has succeeded in putting the Eastern Cape on the regional coffee map. He has also set a very high standard for the third barista, Matinenga.” Matinenga said: “Following in my colleague’s footsteps there is much pressure, but it is a very good platform to grow as a person not only at work, but also in the outside world. Success doesn’t come cheaply and it is

a blessing working under them.” Victor is confident that he will bring home the gold and possibly do better than his colleagues. According to Victor training should have taken three months, but it only took him a month. “I believe I am a fast learner,” he said. ”It takes a world class barista, a professional and someone who knows what he is doing to succeed at the championships.” The Regional Barista Championships requires each barista to make a total of 12 beverages: 4 cappuccinos, 4 espresso, and 4 signature drinks created by the barista. The baristas are expected to make all 12 beverages in only 15 minutes. To see Matinenga brew the perfect cup of coffee, visit our video gallery on our website www.kougaexpress.co.za.

“Marina Martinique – where the living is easy”. by a Home Owners Association which maintains high standards with good corporate governance that allows Home Owners to be confident in the development. The Marina is essentially a mini municipality run within a municipality All the roads were resurfaced in Phase 2 of the development during 2012, while many trees were planted all over the Marina. Maintenance work has been done in the canals and the pumps, ensuring that the canal water is clean and safe to swim in and to boat upon. A new bridge was also built over the canals, replacing the old drawbridge that once upon a time opened to allow boats to pass through. The Marina is responsible for its own security with the result that the last housebreaking occurred 24 months ago.

NATALIE THOMPSON FOR almost two decades, big-hearted animal lovers have been giving the four-legged friends of the Kouga a second lease on life. But now, they are in desperate need of help to carry on this selfless work. The SPCA Assisi in Humansdorp has been helping the animals in the Kouga area for close to 20 years. In the last year alone they have been a refuge to 631 dogs and 351 cats that were surrendered by their owners, as well as 220 stray dogs and 130 stray cats. They also seize animals who are injured, malnourished or maltreated. A living example of this is their ‘mascot’ José. José is a calf the SPCA has been caring for after he broke his back leg. “He embodies what the SPCA stands for: prevention of cruelty to animals,” says SPCA spokesperson, Jessica Naudé. According to Naudé, most animals are surrendered when their owners are unable to afford veterinary bills. “This poses a big problem for the SPCA,” she says.

“While animals are being surrendered for this reason, the SPCA’s veterinary bills per month is a staggering R35 000 to R40 000, with most of the money being spent on spaying and neutering animals.” To combat escalating veterinary bills, the they are currently in the process of raising funds for an on-site clinic with resident veterinarians. “The clinic will look after animals coming into the shelter, and provide medical care to owners who cannot afford to take their animals to the see a veterinarian,” says Naudé. The SPCA mainly raises money through their various charity shops and charity drives. They will also hold a red carpet day in the near future and an SPCA bizarre in December to raise funds for the on-site veterinary clinic. Naudé says that volunteers are welcome at the shelter, as they always need people to brush and play with the animals. To become a volunteer, or for more information, contact the SPCA at 0 042 295 2814 or phone their emergency number 0 073 121 8963.

Advertorial

Imagine living right on sea water canals that are totally safe for swimming and boating, are teeming with fish, there is no need to barricade your doors or burglar proof your windows and your children can roam the streets on their bikes or just run around. A pipe dream or could this be a reality in Jeffreys Bay? After surviving the meltdown caused by the MasterBond bankruptcy in the early 1990's the Marina Martinique has stood the test of time and has come into its own as a premier choice for a residential property. With seven new plans passed for new houses to be built in the past month, and another five houses currently being constructed, Marina Martinique has bucked the downward property trend and is now a sought after investment for locals and holidaymakers alike. In the boom of 2006/07, waterfront stands were selling at R1000 per m2. The recent sales of vacant stands on the water are selling at an average of R 1 366 per m2 which means that during this recession where other proper ties showed a decrease in price, Marina Martinique has shown a 20% increase in selling price. Marina Martinique is managed

the development hosted the 2011 South African open water Olympic trials that saw world class swimmers like Natalie du Toit, Jessica Roux and Troy Prinsloo fight it out to represent their country in London 2012. A major coup occurred late in 2012 when the Marina H o m e ow n e r s A s s o c i a t i o n purchased the Caranarge section and has worked hard to return the area to its former glory. The Belafonte floating Restaurant may no longer ply its trade, but new jetties, an upgrade to the beach and the restaurant building that has been refurbished, will ensure the future of the Marina and maintain its reputation as being a world class place to live and play in style and comfort. “Marina Martinique – where the living is easy”.

NATALIE THOMPSON HE has gone through life with only three per cent of sight, but that has not held him back from making a success of life. After struggling at school due to insufficient support systems in place at normal schools, Jan du Plessis from Jeffreys Bay is now a firm advocate of inclusive education. “Children with vision impairments should be encouraged to go to normal schools. Providing there is support from the school and parents,” says Du Plessis who obtained his technicon diploma at the age of 42 after five years of study . “My life did not turn out badly and people who are visually impaired should not sit in a heap and feel sorry for themselves,” says Du Plessis. Recently Du Plessis and his wife and biggest helper attented a workshop by Retina South Africa in Port Elizabeth. “There were about four couples from Jeffreys Bay who

deal with the same problems, but do not even know each other,” says Du Plessis. “I realise that there might be many more people in the Jeffreys Bay area who suffer from vision impairment and who need help.” He says that people lack knowledge about vision impairment. “Parents with vision impaired children do not know how to handle their children and children do not know how to handle their parents.” Du Plessis wants to launch a support group in Jeffreys Bay for the visually impaired. He says that the group will consist of discussions about what people can learn from others experiences, to create a support network. The group will also serve as a voice for the visually impaired to create awareness in society of specific needs and abilities of people with vision impairment. People interested in joining the support group can contact Jan du Plessis at 0 082 5755967 or send an e-mail to yada.jan@vodamail.co.za.

Laetitia Ferreira, owner of Loerie Processed Veg situated in the Gamtoos Valley, was honoured at the Businesswomen’s Association regional Business Achiever Awards held in Port Elizabeth in June. She was crowned the winner in the entrepreneur category, proving that hard work and perseverance pays off. Loerie Processed Veg is a fruit and vegetable processing plant that supplies whole and processed produce to a variety of markets, including hospitals, housewives, and the hospitality and catering industries. Ferreira says that 13 years ago she realised that small farmers, and those in the surrounding areas, could only transport their produce to a market near Port Elizabeth. “Which was often to the detriment of the farmers, as the transporting costs regularly outweighed the value of the produce,” she says. Ferreira decided to start her own business that would cater for farmers and supply fresh bulk produce to businesses in the area. Since

opening in 2000, the business has grown from one room to an establishment that utilises 400m² of land. She now employs 21 people from the surrounding area. “I take pride in the fact that my business supports the local community through job creation. Further training is given to staff to ensure their growth as individuals,” says Ferreira. “Outstanding quality and service is the main goal for Loerie Processed Veg, and, because of the business’s high standards, it has retained many of its original customers. Numerous steps are followed to ensure the end product is as fresh and hygienic as possible.” The company is involved with various charities and community work. An organisation close to her heart is the Organ Donor Foundation. Her husband, Denro who was a farmer in the area, suffered from a heart condition that saw him waiting for a heart transplant. “The transplant never came and he passed away in 2011,” says Ferreira. Loerie Processed Veg is also involved in local community projects - including the Loerieheuwel Primary School and the Loerieheuwel Crèche - by providing them with all the vegetables they need to make meals for the children on a daily basis. “I enjoy being involved in community work, and if I am going to help a community I would rather help improve those around Loerie,” says Ferreira.

RRAMS INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME FOR UNEMPLOYED GRADUATES Unemployed Civil Engineering graduates are hereby invited to submit applications for the Internship Programme linked to the Rural Roads Asset Management that the District Municipality in conjunction with the National Department of Transport (NDOT) is embarking on. The NDOT, as part of the S’Hambe Sonke Programme, has provided grant funding for the implementation of Road Asset Management Systems (RAMS) as set out in the framework for the Rural Road Asset Management Grant (RRAMS), Division of Revenue Act (DORA). The strategic goal of the RRAMS Grant is to ensure efficient and effective investment in rural roads through the development of Road Asset Management Systems (RAMS) and the collection of associated road and bridge inventory data condition assessments and traffic information. Improved data on rural roads will guide infrastructure investment, improve accessibility to and mobility of rural communities. The Programme intends to identify five unemployed graduates who will be employed and trained over a three-year period. The graduates will be employed continuously for the three year training period, as part of the Eastern Cape RAMS Academy. Graduates will be mentored under Registered Professional Engineers, working under a Commitment of Undertaking to ECSA to ensure that their experience during the three year period counts towards their professional registration (Pr Techni). Applications are invited from unemployed graduates residing in the following local municipalities: Baviaans, Blue Crane Route, Camdeboo, Kouga, Koukamma, Ikwezi, Makana, Ndlambe, and Sunday River Valley, to participate in the internship programme. Grey wins JBay Cold Water Classic

E

XPERIENCED open water swimmer, Kevin Grey, won the first ever cold water swim in the Eastern Cape when he dominated the 7.5km JBay Swim Classic at Marina Martinique on Saturday. PJ Duffey, who lead the race up to the 5km mark, finished second, with the 12.5 degree water eventually sapping his strength and Grey upped his game in the third and final 2.5km lap of the swim. “I felt good in the latter stages of the race and made my move at the 5km and managed to hold off PJ, who is a renowned sprinter in open water swimming”, said Grey. Richden Jute finished third while experienced Robben Island swimmer Martin Vleggar came fourth. Jeffreys Bay swimmer JC Van Wyk dominated the 2.5km swim with Kendal Wright coming second. Amy Erasmus won the women’s division in

her first ever cold water swim, from Cecilia Belgraver. “I was really nervous before the swim but I settled down and enjoyed the swim. Marina Martinique is an awesome place to swim” said Erasmus after her victory. Jared Cassidy won the wetsuit division. “We are very happy that we have established a legitimate cold water swim in the Eastern Cape, said event organiser Brenton Williams. “Cold water is regarded as being sub 15 degrees C. With an average water temperature of 12.5 degrees, Marina Martinique will grow in stature as a cold water swimming venue during the winter months,” added Williams. The Cold Water Classic was the opening event of the JBay Winter Fest, a multi-sport festival that is currently taking place in Jeffreys Bay.
