Volgens hom was Webb “ ’n versigtige stapperâ€?. – Jackie Kruger Geen noodlottige ongelukke DIÉ Desember was daar geen noodlottige ongelukke in Jeffreysbaai nie. Dit is volgens polisiewoordvoerder a.o Petra Els.

Disaster relief welcomed, but falls short MONIQUE BASSON

R

EPAIRS to flood damaged infrastructure in Kouga will soon commence in earnest after government appropriated more than R3 million from an emergency fund. This funding forms part of a combined amount of R36,8 million that was granted to the Ndlambe-, Sundays River Valley-, Kouga- and Koukamma municipalities within the Cacadu District Municipality. However, as initial costs of repair to damaged essential infrastructure is estimated at approximately R19 million, this funding leaves the municipality with a shortfall of more than R16 million. The estimate includes damage to roads, water, sewerage and storm water infrastructure. Projects to benefit from the disaster relief funding, include: .R36 800 for the Mahe Beat bridge in St Francis Bay; .R735 000 for the flood damages at Tom Brown Boulevard in St Francis Bay;

.R2 011 500 for the structural repairs to the causeway across the Seekoei River between Aston Bay and Paradise Beach; .R101 000 for the restoration of Tongvis Street in Oyster Bay; .R130 000 was allocated to the restoration of sewer pump stations and related infrastructure in St Francis Bay and Aston Bay. Projects that will have to be put on the back burner due to a lack of funding, include: .Surfaced roads that have been washed away and damaged in St Francis Bay, Humansdorp, Thornhill, Loerie, Kruisfontein and Arcadia and Sea Vista (estimated at R15 798 800); .Low cost houses that have been flooded in Sea Vista (estimated at R200 000); .The repair of storm water outlets in Waterkant Street and Da Gama Road (estimated at R58 875); .Repairs and drainage to Dolphin Drive in Aston Bay (estimated at R63 000). In the Koukamma Municipality the only projects considered for the relief funds were the damage to sewer systems in Blikkiesdorp at R20 000 and Ravinia at R30 000.

According to DA MP Elza van Lingen, these funds are to address and relieve the immediate needs and consequences of the floods. “Municipalities are responsible for the restoration as well as submitting expenditure reports to Cacadu District Municipality and the provincial disaster management centre within 30 days of the quarter in which the funds were received,” said van Lingen. “The national and provincial disaster management centres will visit the municipalities to monitor the projects and also to discuss the lessons learnt and the challenges still facing the municipalities.”

Although the government provided over R3 million for disaster relief funding, there will be no relief for residents and motorists in Dolphin Drive, Aston Bay as the funds provided are insufficient to address all the infrastructure problems in the Kouga. Photo: MONIQUE BASSON

Dogs might be banned on beaches MONIQUE BASSON DOGS will be banned from all beaches in the Kouga area if new by-laws are approved and introduced by the Kouga Municipality. The decision to prohibit dogs on Kouga Beaches, which is being considered by the municipality and has been approved in principle, was made known to the public on December 20. Residents and tourists alike have ever since been up in arms about the proposed banning of dogs on beaches. Zirk Lombard from Aston Bay strongly opposes the proposed banning of dogs on beaches in the Kouga area. “Many elderly people, single women and children rely on their dogs for a feeling of safety. These people often have no one else available to walk with them and would otherwise take no exercise and be severely limited in their opportunities for social interaction. “Many of our roads are not pedestrian friendly and parks, if available at all, are already closed to dogs. “We are blessed with such vast stretches of sandy beach. Surely we can find some areas between the swimming beaches where dogs can be walked and run.” Kabeljouws resident Peter Blake, who is also against the proposed ‘no dog’ policy, said: “I protest most strongly against the municipality’s unreasonable intention to ban dogs from

all of the Kouga beaches. It is an ill-thought through decision, which the under-resourced and cash-strapped municipality is unable to enforce, in common with many of the other regulations put in place such as no dogs on the Blue Flag beach and no vehicles to be driven on beaches.” According to a visitor from Johannesburg, who regularly visits Jeffreys Bay, if the prohibition of dogs on beaches are approved he will no longer visit Jeffreys Bay. “I will much rather visits places where I can walk my dog on the beach.” Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, said: “The reason Council is considering banning dogs from all/demarcated beaches is because of the numerous complaints from beachgoers about, eg, aggressive dogs on the beach. - there have been attacks in the past - or about owners not cleaning up after their dogs. “A final decision about the banning of dogs from all/demarcated beaches will only be made once public comment has been received and considered. We would, therefore, like to encourage anyone with strong feelings about the matter to submit their comment to the Municipal Manager, as per the invitation in the notice.” Any comments or objections in respect of the prohibiting of dogs on Kouga Beaches must be submitted in writing to the Municipal Manager, 33 Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay, before January 12 at 12:00.

Matric news/ Matrieknuus

Woodridge achieve top results

WOODRIDGE College is once again very pleased with their matric results for 2013. The top four candidates achieved A symbols in all their subjects. William Melville from Jeffreys Bay and Jason le Roux from Namibia, both wrote 8 subjects and scored 8 distinctions. Laura Ritchie from St Francis Bay, and Melissa Schulze from The United Arab Emirates, took 7 subjects and also achieved A’s in all 7. Tara Munro and Joshua Nicholson narrowly missed out on a full house of A’s with 6 distinctions. Of the 82 matriculants in 2012, 92% achieved bachelor degree passes, which is substantially higher than the national average. The international diversity of the College is highlighted with Yasmin Strohl from Germany, scoring 5 distinctions, one of which was 100% for German. Natasha Clark of PE also achieved 5 distinctions. Headmaster Craig Neave feels that these superb results confirm Woodridge as one of the leading academic institutions in the region.

Visitors and tourists flocked to the Boardwalk this festive season to view the multi-media water spectacular on the lake. Over 800 lights add colour to the displays, while multimedia presentations are shown on a 144 square metre screen created from water. The good news is that this is a permanent fixture at the Boardwalk. Read more about it on page 8 of this week’s edition. Photo: WERNER HILLS

OGILVY CAPE TOWN 53864/BW/BA/E

VISITORS and residents flocked to The Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment Complex this holiday season with its new multimedia water feature on the lake as one of the main attractions. The multimedia water spectacular centrepiece will be a permanent feature at The Boardwalk. According to The Boardwalk general manager, Clifford Ngakane, the themed multimedia shows, which will continue after the holiday season, will reflect the seasons and celebrate special months. The water feature consists of over 80 pumps capable of shooting a thousand tons of water an hour through around 100 individual water jets. Over 800 lights add colour to the nightly displays, while multimedia presentations are shown on a 144 square metre screen created from water. At its climax, the strongest jet is able to shoot water 60 metres into the air – making it one of the highest fountains in Africa. Over 35 kilometres of cables and pipes connect the different elements of the fountain. Designed by French fountain specialists Aquatique, the fountain is part of a R1-bn investment at the Boardwalk, which includes a 140-room five-star hotel, international convention centre, smoking casino and upgraded retail precinct. Aquatique has installations all around the world, including some of the favourite water attractions in Euro Disney, Disneyworld USA, Universal Studios, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the Bubble Show in Macau (China), and Le Lido in Paris, France.

Local swimmers excel at Marina Mile

LOCAL swimmers once again proved that Jeffreys Bay and surrounding areas boast some of the most powerful swimmers in the Eastern Cape during the annual Marina Mile.

Splendid weather and warm water greeted the 150 participants who took part in the 2012 swimming Plus Marina Mile, which was held at Marina Martinique in late December. The Marina Mile has grown into a twoday open water swim festival and offers swims like the traditional mile, as well as an extreme 25K swim which tests swimmers to the limit. Local swimmer Caro de Jager showed that she has the potential to become the first Jeffreys Bay swimmer to ever win the Marina Mile when she came second to Olympian Jessica Roux in the women’s mile. De Jager was not far off the pace and Roux remarked after the race that she will have to keep an eye out for the Jeffreys Bay swimmer in time to come. Caro had earlier won the Steers Double Mile and it would have been interesting to see how she would have fared against the Olympian had she started the Mile without having swum earlier in the day. To cap a fine weekend of swimming, de Jager then went on to win the Steers 5K event the following day in a very respectable time of 1 hour 5 minutes. Chris Reid from Port Elizabeth won the

Men’s mile, with Seth de Swart from JefTo view all the pictures and see the refreys Bay winning his age group and plac- sults from the 2012 Marina Mile, visit ing 10th overall. www.swimmingplus.com Rebecca Baard, Michelle Strydom, Buzz Friday, Robert Gault, Anne de Swart and Cheryl Gibson-Dicks all had good swims and did Jeffreys Bay proud at the Marina Mile. Tyron Venter, the South African 25K champion, took advantage of the R2 000 prize money, sponsored by Core Surf Gear for the winner of the gruelling marathon swim. Venter blitzed his way to victory in a world class time of 5 hours 33 minutes to set himself up for a fine year of swimming ahead. Koffie Jacobs from Core Surf Gear said that it was great to see extreme events taking place in Jeffreys Bay. “I watched the 25K throughout the day and what these swimmers are doing is really extreme, and Core Surf Gear is stoked to be a part of open water swimming; we are happy to support it and see the event grow in JBay,” said Local swimmer Caro de Jager came second in the annual Marina Mile. JBay swimmer rakes in records JEFFREYS Bay swimmer Brenton Williams set no fewer than two world records and sneaked in a South African record for the furthest ever open water butterfly swim by a South African - all in a year’s work. Williams, who teaches swimming and is a DA councillor, completed a 17km butterfly swim in Marina Martinique on December 31, beating the previous SA record by 2km. The record breaking spree began in March last year when Williams, together with another Jeffreys Bay swimmer JC Van Wyk, joined four other swimmers to set a new world record of 350km for a continual open water relay swim. Early in December, Williams became the first person in the world to swim butterfly from 3 Anchor Bay in Cape Town all the way to Robben Island - a distance of 11.5 Km in water that measured 12 degrees. He was also nominated for the World Open Water Swim Association Performance of the Year for his swim at the 8km Deep Blue at St Helena Bay in October. “The Deep Blue swim set the tone for the rest of the season. It was a hard swim in extreme conditions that included swimming through big chop, against the currents and in water that dipped to 10.5 degrees,” said Williams. “That swim gave me the confidence that my training was on track and that I could handle really cold water and swim butterfly in seriously choppy conditions. “The Robben Island swim is iconic and well-respected all over the world. To set a record at Robben Island was a special moment and I cannot wait to go back and swim there again.” Williams continued that he wanted to do a big swim in his hometown where his support base is. “I needed good conditions to try break the South African record of 15km butterfly set by Chris Barnard in 1994. There is no better venue than Marina Martinique, even though the water was a bit warm at 24 degrees. The swim itself went really well in the first stages and at the half way mark I was feeling good. The last 5km was difficult as my shoulders felt like they were seizing up and I picked up a knee injury. “The amazing support from the people in their homes and on their boats helped pull me through the last 2km and I want to thank everyone for that.”
