Police women celebrate Women’s Month

Felape Jonas. Female members of the Jeffreys Bay Police are out in full force to celebrate Women’s Month by giving back to the community they serve. According to w/o Petra Els, every police woman will commit one hour per week in the Community Service Cen tre. Yesterday they took to the streets in Pellsrus and Ocean View, handing out bread sponsored by Sasko to the community. A/O Surraine van Taak spent some time with “ouma” Pauline Kramer. South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a nonracial and nonsexist SA. Photos: PETRA ELS

Dit was aanvanklik as ’n grap bedoel, maar so gesê so gedaan,” het ’n laggende Maudene vertel.

Members of the Jeffreys Bay Police kicked off Women’s Month with an educational visit to Woodlands Dairy in Humansdorp on August 3. Jacky Naicker from Woodlands acted as a tour guide and entertained the women with his extensive knowledge of the factory. The Jeffreys Bay police women also shared some information about do mestic violence and abuse with the staff from Woodlands, with regard to Women’s month. Teen 11nm. was hulle reeds

’n Tweede verdagte is daar naby aangekeer.

Kouga’s new directors make gender history K

OUGA is making gender history this Women’s Month - three of the municipality’s new directors are women. It is the first time in Kouga’s history that as many women as men serve on the municipality’s top management team, headed by Municipal Manager Sidney Fadi. Directors Carleen Arends, Carlien Burger, Thobeka Tom, Victor Felton and Japie Jansen took up their posts on August 1. “The timing of the appointments during Women’s Month is highly appropriate because it highlights the municipality’s commitment to gender equality,” said Executive Mayor Booi Koerat. “We are privileged to have three remarkable women on our top team who will be helping us build the kind of communities we would all like to see our children grow up in.” Human Resource Development expert Thobeka Tom heads the Administration, Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate. “Tom is an amazing example of a woman who overcame great odds through hard work,” said

the Mayor. “She joined the Health Department in 1988 as a cleaner. She had six children and no Matric. Yet, by getting up at 3am most mornings, she completed her schooling while working and caring for her family, then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and worked her way up in the Department. “Her passion is helping others to transform their lives. She has the determination and expertise to help us create a strong and disciplined staff complement, focused on uplifting communities.” New Local Economic Development (LED) and Tourism Director Carleen Arends hails from Nelson Mandela Bay where she held a similar position at the Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Unit for eight years. “This is one of our new directorates,” the Mayor explained. “It means a great deal to us that it will be headed by someone who knows exactly, from first-hand experience, how this directorate should function so that communities will reap the economic benefits.” Kouga’s new CFO, Carlien Burger, was appointed as the municipality’s Risk Manager in 2010, but

her strong accounting and auditing background catapulted her into the role of acting CFO last year. “Burger was called on to act as CFO at a time when our municipality was near bankrupt,” said the Mayor. “While a full financial recovery cannot be achieved overnight, she has already proven her worth. We are confident that she is the right person to continue leading the Finance Directorate.” While the focus for August may fall on women, the new Infrastructure, Planning and Development Director Victor Felton and Social Services Director Japie Jansen by no means have to stand back for their female counterparts. Civil engineer Victor Felton hails from Nelson Mandela Bay where he was a member of the senior management team, specialising in project and contract management for the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate and Public Health Directorate. Qualified in both the legal and teaching professions, Japie Jansen has been in government for more than 30 years. While he has held various senior positions, his speciality has been those functions that form part of the Social Services Directorate.

SNEEUWITJIE EN KLEINKINDERS KUIER BY FOUNTAINS MALL

Chrisna Dollman applying the Light Duty Concentrate (used to clean penguins) to the cooking oil covered hands of Liesel Bakkes while GNLD distributor Magteld Pretorius looks. Photo: PVJ

If it’s good enough for penguins, it’s good enough for your house PAUL VAN JAARSVELD WHO would ever have thought that the soap used to clean oil from penguins, will leave your house as clean as a new six pens. As strange as it may sound, just as effective it proved to be. That is exactly what Chrisna Dollman, 4 Ruby director of GNLD International, explained and demonstrated to a room full of sceptics at a recent business brunch in Jeffreys Bay. Topics discusses, furthermore included how to save money in the everyday household and how to generate a residual income. Several environmentally friendly products were introduced and demonstrated to guests, including a versatile Light Duty Concentrate soap. Dollman stated that conservation authorities in South Africa chose to use this product to clean penguins after oil spills. It was the only soap they could find that did not destroy natural oils in penguin feathers saving hundreds of animals dying from hypothermia. Other interesting products included an all purpose cleaner that cleans anything from wax crayons in carpets to dirty engines. A superior washing powder that costs only R 1.53 per 5kg load was also demonstrated as well as furniture

polish, car wash and many more. She made it clear that all cleaning products are non-corrosive, non-toxic, non-caustic, child safe and completely bio degradable. Furthermore she stated that all the harmful and expensive cleaning products used in everyday households could be replaced with a few GNLD products at a fraction of the price. Dollman explained that most off the shelf supplements contain synthetic materials not recognised by the body as food and that GNLD offers supplements made from real food. She also mentioned that GNLD supplements are backed and checked by an independent Scientific Advisory Board founded by Dr. Arthur Furst, world renowned cancer researcher and toxicologist. Originally a nurse by profession, she shared how she had managed to build a large international business by introducing these products to friends and using it in her own household. She stated that through the business, she and her husband was able to realise their dreams, including international travels, several houses and driving the cars they always wanted. Lastly, she explained how anybody with a dream can become an independent GNLD distributor and earn a residual income in multiple currencies and that the business does not need door to door sales.

Foster homes to rise in Kruisfontein MONIQUE BASSON

A

FEW new homes will soon rise in Kruisfontein, dedicated to helping meet the pressing need for foster care across the Kouga region. Taking a small first step to deal with this large problem in Humansdorp, Victory4All (V4All) Projects has embarked on a near R2 million project that will see the construction of three new foster homes in Kruisfontein, Humansdorp. “As a result of alcohol or drug abuse or extreme poverty, many parents are just not able to take care of their children. At the Department of Social Development, there is a long list of children that needs to be placed in foster care,” said Johan Vos, cofounder of V4All Projects. “Many children in the informal settlements of Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp live under terrible circumstances. They face hunger, illness, violence, prostitution, a lack of adequate housing and sanitation and much more on a daily basis. Often they lose hope and do not expect their future to be any better than that of

their parents. “By building foster homes, we at V4All want to create a better future for these children in need, unlocking their full potential and give them hope for the future.” Construction already started in May this year and it is anticipated that the foster homes, complete with a community hall, will be completed by November this year. According to Vos, the homes, constructed at a cost of R650 000 each, are designed to accommodate a maximum of six children. “The homes are so called foster care cum homes for disabled children. They will be home to a mix of children, accommodating foster care children (statutory placed), as well as children with disabilities attending the Rainbow Day Care Centre in Kruisfontein.” Since 2007 V4All have already constructed four foster homes and one safe house in Jeffreys Bay, and they are now expanding their projects to the Humansdorp area. For more information or to become a foster parent at one of the homes in Kruisfontein, send an email to johan@victory4all.com or visit www.victory4all.com.

Local women builds ecofriendly house from sandbags TINNEKE GOEDHALS

<The frames are up and the sandbags are being put in. This photo was taken during the first stages of building the sandbag house in JeffreysBay.

FIVE years ago two sisters, Susan and Jackie Botha, bought a property in Jeffreys Bay with the idea of building a retirement house for their mom. Life, however, took them on a journey that led them to decide to build a green house. “I did a lot of research and we decided on building a sandbag house,” said Susan. Not only was it more cost-effective than a conventional house, but it was also environmentally friendly and it required less skill so they could do it themselves. “A sandbag house has a smaller total-embodied energy than a cement and brick house and yet it is much more insulated - meaning it’s warmer in the winter and cooler in summer,” said Susan. According to Susan the walls are built from sandbags, stacked on top of each other. They are then covered with a layer of cob as a form of plaster. This layer gets plastered with a layer of lime to seal the walls and then they add prickly pear juice to the walls to make them more water repellent. For the interior walls they use a technique called wattle and daub where you weave wattle and clad it with cob and lime. When finished it looks like a normal wall. They contracted a local artist to make all the lights from driftwood, pottery and recycled glass. A friend

of theirs, who works on a film set where they built a submarine, supplied the doors and their door frames from recycled Telkom poles, which they sanded down. They have been building for 18 months and are close to finishing. It’s only the kitchen cupboards and bathrooms that they need to put in. “It’s been taking long to build because we are building it with cash, so we build as the money comes in. Also we are doing it ourselves and cannot commit all our time to it because we all work. We are also pioneers, having to learn and apply natural building techniques for building the walls, plastering, painting and laying a natural floor, so we have had a lot of trial and error time,” said Susan. When they started in December 2010, they invited all their friends and family to spend time with them over the Christmas period to help build the house. Many curious holiday makers and persons interested in natural building also came to help. “It has been incredible. More than a 100 people from all over SA have helped us build the house. We also held a five-day building course where we had 22 people helping out,” said Susan. They will be holding a one-day workshop this Saturday (August 11) in Jeffreys Bay. The cost of the workshop is R350. Booking in advance is essential and can be made by e-mailing to susan.botha@gmail.com.

Woman on the Move 2011 groet MONIQUE BASSON

M

Watter eienskappe maak egter die perfekte Woman on the Move?

vrou is: “Raak betrokke. Brei of kook sop.

Vir meer besonderhede , besoek hul webwerf www.miraclecomfrey. of kkontak Mey by 0 076 231 7494.

Local scoops prestigious nursing award MONIQUE BASSON HER path to success was not an easy one, but the top student award winner at the Emmanuel Nursing College share a common denominator associated with many businesswomen - a determination to succeed. Despite dealing with financial and personal adversity, Laetitia Coetzee (28) - a former learner of Nico Malan High School in Humandsdorp, is on track to complete her life long dream. For overcoming those odds, she was named recipient of the Top Student Trophy from Emmanuel Nursing College in Oudtshoorn, where she had been completing her Staff Nurse Training. “This award is such a blessing,” a visibly moved Coetzee said. “I’m grateful for the support of my family and professors, they have given me a lot of encouragement along the way.” In addition to this award she also received distinctions for her theory and practical examinations she completed in January this year. Victory Christian School (VCS) Educators realised that it is important to be computer literate and to keep their technical skills updated, since poor technological skills are likely to demotivate skilled pupils. In July 2010 the staff registered for the ICDL (Interna tional Computer Driving License) course, which consisted of 7 Modules, in order to use technology effectively to manage teaching and learning in the class. Teachers who have already obtained their ICDL Core Certificate are (back from left) Pierre de Villiers, Gael Walker, Matt Erasmus, Madelein Zunckel, René Hugo, Mari Kok, (front from left) Celida Ferreira and Nettie Olivier. Griep: die basiese feite LOUIS VAN DYK

1BN2AK06P-090812-KG-hs-ooskaap

Vir meer inligting, kontak Tom du Toit by 0 083 628 4922 of Johan Marais by 0 082 924 5346.
