Werkers betoog oor loongeskil MONIQUE BASSON

W

Volgens Scheepers is HIV/Vigs ’n baie groot probleem in Jeffreysbaai.

THREE suspects, aged between 23 and 72, appeared in the Humansdorp Court on Monday on charges of house breaking and theft. Winnie Potgieter (72), Riekie Blaauw (32) and Rodwell Adams (23) from Vaaldam in Humansdorp were arrested by members of the Jeffreys Bay Detective team on Saturday, May 19 after receiving vital information from a trusted informant. According to w/o Petra Els, a variety of tools, including a compressor, were stolen at Twin Valley Farm in Kabeljauws between May 14 and 15. The suspects fled the scene on foot. "The Dog Unit was called in and fol-

lowed the trail of the suspects, but unfortunately lost the trail near the N2 Highway where the suspects were allegedly picked up by a vehicle," said Els. "On Saturday w/o Francis Scott and constable Martin Bell continued the search, but without success. After obtaining additional information they set off to Vaaldam in Humansdorp where they witnessed the suspects busy trying to load the stolen compressor onto a bakkie. They arrested the suspects and seized the stolen property. "The suspects pointed out several premises in Gill Marcus and Vaaldam where they had stashed away the rest of the stolen property." All the stolen items were recovered.

MONIQUE BASSON OVER 300 fire hydrants in the whole of Kouga will be upgraded at a cost of R1-million. This is a joint initiative by the Kouga Municipality and the Cacadu District Municipality, who is providing the funds for this much-needed upgrade.

The upgrade has recently kicked off in Humansdorp, with 119 fire hydrants detected so far that needs to be upgraded. "The numbers may increase as we pick up more hydrants that need to be worked on," said municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele. "The objective of the project is to improve efficiency in dealing speedily with fire situations. The fire hydrants

will now be above the ground, providing easy access for our firemen and with less equipment needed. This will cut down on unnecessary expenditure on extra tools and equipment." According to Sobele, residents might be without water at certain times during the day as water needs to be cut off while upgrading is taking place.

Residents fuming as garbage piles up but things are now getting out of hand. For the last four weeks garbage bags have been piling up across my house. One of the contractors responsible for picking up the bags, just threw it in the nearby bushes. I had to pay someone to take it out again and put in on the verge. "Apart from being a sight for sore eyes, it also poses a health hazard as this is not only garden refuse, but also household waste." According to municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, the rule of only two bags per household, only holds true for garden refuse and not domestic waste. "The same arrangement that stands for everyone on domestic

up on their street over the last couple of weeks.

ESIDENTS of Pride of India Crescent in Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay are fuming over the heaps of garbage piling

"It looks as if this is the new tip site of Jeffreys Bay," said an angry Hermien Breytenbach. According to Breytenbach, four other households and herself have been putting their garbage bags on the open piece of land nearby their houses every Thursday morning for as long as she can remember. "This has never been a problem in the past, but now all of a sudden we are being told that only two garbage bags per household are allowed to be put out and it must be placed in the front of your own garden," said Breytenbach. "I have never complaint before,

waste still applies to them as well. The residents of the area used to transport their garden waste to Paradise Beach where we had our skips for all garden waste. After the floods last year, however, a new agreement was entered into between the residents and the municipality," said Mfundo. "Residents will be allowed to take out only two refuse bags of garden waste a week for collection by the municipality. The only way we will be able to monitor this is if these bags are put as per the arrangement in front of the houses of the people responsible."Garden waste has caused damage to our compacting trucks which is why we cannot collect it in large quantities."

Retired SA Air Force members ‘take over Equinox Mall’ MONIQUE BASSON GENERALS, Lieutenant Generals, Brigadier Generals and colonels all descended on the Equinox Mall last Tuesday. Leading the ‘troops’ to ‘combat’ was the Chief of the South African Air Force and RSA Ambassador in Chile, Lieutenant General Mike Muller, with the assistance of Colonel Faan Louw. This, however, was not a fierce battle to the end on the combat field, but much rather a trip down memory lane - remembering the good old days when they stood proud in uniforms with their ranks shining flamboyantly and serving their country. Former Colonel Faan Louw, from the SA Air Force, and his wife, Maxie, have taken it upon themselves to arrange a special event on a regular basis where all the retired SA Air Force members, who are now residing in Jeffreys Bay, can get together and

share stories of days gone by. This time round, this elite group had the honour of Muller and his wife joining them for a luncheon at The Wild Olive in the Equinox Mall. “This elite group of Air Force retirees frequently get together to keep up and maintain the well earned camaraderie and esprit de corps they have enjoyed so many years before,” said the ever-willing Louw, who is the convenor of the Kouga Region of the SA Air Force Association’s Port Elizabeth Branch. ” Members who attended the event are: TLieutenant General Mike Muller and Katie Muller. Muller is the former Chief of the SA Air Force and RSA

Ambassador - Chile. TMajor General Oliver Holmes and Cecile Holmes. TBrigadier General Fritz Maritz and Dorothy Maritz. TBrigadier General At Grobbelaar and Joey Grobbelaar. TBrigadier General Ernie Schmidt and Elaine Schmidt. TColonel Faan Louw and Maxie Louw. TColonel Johan Oosthuizen and Freda Ooshuizen. TColonel John van Rooyen.

On guard: Lifesaving Club opens in Jeffreys Bay MONIQUE BASSON

J

oin the Jeffreys Bay Surf Lifesaving Club

“The finest thing a man can do is saving the life of another human being - that is lifesaving." RENOWNED for its gorgeous beaches and known as the surfing capital of South Africa, with a coastline that captures the heart and soul of everyone who embraces its shores, it is hard to imagine that these beaches - that are frequented by hoards of visitors each year - had no permanent lifeguards up until a few months ago. And it was this shocking statistic that saw a handful of locals taking action and doing something about it. Approximately three months ago, six men who have a passion for saving lives, took it upon themselves to establish the first ever lifesaving club in Jeffreys Bay, called the Jeffreys Bay Surf Lifesaving Club. To the untrained eye, it may appear as if these men are just sitting at the beach, soaking up the sun and working on their tans. In their basic uniform of red swim-

suit, cap, whistle around the neck, sunblock on the nose and sunglasses, it seems as though they have secured the perfect job. Not so. Contrary to popular belief, being a lifeguard does not give one the privilege to secure a peaceful job at beautiful beaches. In fact, the normal workday of a lifeguard can be very demanding and tough. Every day from 8am to 5pm they volunteer their skills and time to ensure the safety of everyone who visits Jeffreys Bay's beaches. They perform countless rescues, first aid treatments and preventative actions, yet their work often goes unnoticed. However, they are not in it for fame or adulation, they are in it to save lives. According to Zwelibanzi Mafutha, all six lifeguards at the Jeffreys Bay Surf Lifesaving Club have obtained a lifeguard certification - Lifeguard Award - that is internationally recognised. "Our skills have been honed through first aid courses. This has been followed up with a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). These are important skills in this kind of career, because it is required from us to attend to different kinds of emergencies in a certain and calm manner. We must know how to deal

with injuries or manage individuals who have experienced trauma. It furthermore teaches us how to deal with stressful cardiac emergencies." Mafutha continues that to become a lifeguard your personnel fitness must be in optimal condition. "Aside from developing flawless swimming skills, you also have to build enough muscles for hauling drowning people out of the water. Agility, strength, and endurance are only three of the most important traits that you need to develop when wanting to become a lifeguard." Apart from keeping a close watch on swimmers, they must also adhere to a strenuous exercise regime on a daily basis, ensure that all the equipment - including the jet-ski - are in good working order, determine the rip currents and inshore holes, monitor the tide charts and determine the safest place for swimming for that specific day. The best place to swim for the day will be indicated by two red and yellow flags. Apart from saving lives, these lifeguards also offer training to the community, community water safety programmes, and programmes at schools to train children and make them more water-wise - and in doing so, taking lifesaving to the community. "To be able to grow as a surf lifesa-

HANKEY YOUTH IS DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES:

Ndyebo Kopo: GCIS, Cacadu District coastal area

My advice to young people and the community at large, people must stop complaining and not expect to receive things on a silver platter, they must stand up and do it for themselves and be their own employers” . These were the words of Nosisi Dayimani who is a member of Masiphumelele Youth Project, a cooperative based in centerton in Hankey. This is a brick making cooperative which was initiated by 15 young people in 2005, after an information session which was facilitated by Department of Social Development (Hankey office) to encourage young people to start income generating projects. The project currently has 05 members an five Casual workers preparing for the next delivery casual workers to assist with brick making and deliveries to customers. The project was funded by Department of Social Development with R500 000, of which they received it in three instalments: in 2005 they received R250 000, then in 2007 they received R125 000 and in 2011 they received another R125 000. T “ he funding assisted the group a great deal as result we were able to buy machinery, uniform, office equipment and raw material to sustain the project” , said Nombulelo Katoo a member of the cooperative. Before the group was funded, they received business management training facilitated by the Department of Social Development through Fort Hare University, the Small Enterprise and Development Agency (SEDA) and Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism also provided training for the cooperative. Once the group received the first badge of funding (R250 000), SEDA appointed a mentor for them to assist them on business side of things. Asked how the project has changed their lives, Nosisi Daymani and Nombulelo Katoo said before they started with the project, they had no source of income and now Nosisi is supporting her family of eight and Nombulelo is supporting her family of five including three children and both of them are the only breadwinners in their families. The project has grown and provided other opportunities it has employed five casual workers and during school holidays it accommodates leaners and provides skills on how to make brick making and also taking them as casuals. The project has started an agricultural project as a social responsibility; they supply vegetables to orphans, poor people and to people living with On site at the Masiphumelele Youth project HIV/AIDS. “ A shop of a local foreign national was built from the ground using our building blocks and many of the RDP houses in this area were built from our building blocks” , said Nosisi Dayimani. 1BI91KQ4H-240512-KG-hs-gov

ving club and become one of the best clubs in South Africa, we need proper equipment and members to join on a voluntary basis," said Mafutha. "Anyone can join the Jeffreys Bay Surf Lifesaving Club. There is no age limit and you do not even have to be able to swim. For those who do not want to become active lifesavers and challenge the waves, there is always something to do on dry land, especially when it comes to our various community projects. Partnership brings hope to Thornhill community:

Ndyebo Kopo: GCIS, Cacadu District costal area

Thornhill is part of Cacadu District Municipality, a very small community that is along the coast, mostly disadvantaged and there are no government departments with offices in the area. The community is challenged with many social ills, high rate of alcohol abuse especially amongst young people, high rate of teenage pregnancy, unemployment, high rate of HIV/AIDS related cases, hopelessness when it comes to government. Government Communication (GCIS) working with the local Community Development and Department of Social Development have led a campaign in partnership with the local Youth Development Forum in order to ensure that challenges faced by this community are responded to, through access to government information and programmes. The campaign was kick started with a door to door programme on 26 April 2012 which was meant to interact with the residents about their challenges and also mobilize them towards an information day held on 30 April 2012 where in government departments were invited to share information regarding services and programmes they offer.

Residents of Thornhill during the Information round table discussion

At the information day the residents together with government departments pledged to work together with government departments to help improve their community and also work through the Development Forums that are there in area and the ward councilor to keep in contact with government for ongoing programmes in the area. This programme is part of an ongoing effort to communicate government information and ensuring that people have access especially communities such as Thornhill. 1BI90PA4H-240512-KG-hs-gov

Cape Town to host Billabong SA Champs THE countdown to the 2012 Billabong South African Surfing Champs has begun. The 47th edition of the longest running surfing tournament in the country gets underway on the Cape Peninsula, one of the most consistent but rugged surf destinations in South Africa, is set to take place from May 24 - 27. The end of May is a good period for surf in the Western Cape, and

the national championships could enjoy anything from booming Outer Kom surf to Witsands perfection to the beachbreak barrels of Long Beach. Billabong and Surfing South Africa are continuing their partnership with the most prestigious interprovincial surfing event in the country, by providing top class infrastructure and considerable prize-money amounts. "We're stoked to be continuing

our involvement with Surfing South Africa and the tradition that is the SA Champs," said Billabong South Africa's marketing manager Chad D'Arcy. "Cape Town is a great place for a mobile surf event this time of year, and we're looking forward to the wide variety of surf on offer." As last year, the 2012 edition of the Billabong SA Champs will again focus on the premier divisions of Open Men's, Open Women's and U20

GLA KRAAI KONING

The winner-take-all prize money breakdown is as follows: JMen: R10 000
