After Dark Haruki Murakami

Translated from the Japanese by Jay Rubin

Two sisters: Yuri, a fashion model sleeping her way into oblivion;

and Mari, a young student soon led from solitary reading at an anonymous Denny’s into lives radically alien to her own. The life of a jazz trombonist who claims they’ve met before; a burly female “love hotel” manager and her maidstaff; and a Chinese prostitute savagely brutalized by a businessman. These “night people” are haunted by secrets and needs that draw them together more powerfully than the differing circumstances that might keep apart. After Dark moves from mesmerizing drama to metaphysical speculation, interweaving time and space as as well as memory and perspective into a seamless exploration of the interplay between selfexpression and understanding, between the power of observation and the scope of compassion and love.

Getting Your Money’s Worth with your Asset Manager

In this article we will look at some of the factors that need to be taken into account when the time arrives.

ne of the first hurdles is to think about where the money is coming from to invest with an asset manager. If it is from selling the family home, capital gains are not an issue, but one must decide on future living arrangements. If it is from cashing in an investment portfolio, however, capital gains and the subsequent tax burden can erode your purchasing power significantly, especially if you have held equities for a long time. Money arising from registered plans are taxed as if they were income, thereby reducing your effective cash flow.

A Year Of Secrets, Recipes, and Pleasure

“Mireille Guiliano’s book is slender, elegant, well-spoken, sensible and unembarrassed by the frank embrace of stratagems.” Adam Gopnok, author of Paris to the Moon

Mireille Guiliano was born and brought up in France. president and CEO of Cliquot, Inc. (LVMH), she is married to an American, and lives most of the year in New York and in Paris. Her first book, French Women Don’t Get Fat, has appeared in 37 languages. Mireille is passionate about food and wine and cites breakfast, lunch and dinner as her favorite pastimes. The sound of corks popping is truly music to her ears.

Mireille Guiliano

he French Woman is at it again. Her style and approach to life and food is so optimistic and real that one can not help but be charmed and uplifted. Different from the first book, this one has new recipes and meal plans and some gems of wisdom on how to stop mindlessly stuffing our mouths full of tasteless junk. I’ve already started to incorporate her “50% Solution”, the concept of eating only half the portion you’re given or sharing an entree with a tablemate. Her idea is that if you stop midway through a meal and reflect on how you are feeling, instead of eating the “whole enchilada” just because it’s there, you will realize that you are more than content. In doing so, you’ll shave off a lot of calories and if this habit becomes a routine your waistline will get slimmer. This isn’t a “diet” book and it’s not going to help you take off the extra pounds before Christmas; however if you follow the general principles you will lead a fuller life and realize that happiness is not found on a dessert plate.
