MESSAGES A Welcome from the President A Welcome from the President Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL). Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals. With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice. Greetings from the WHL There are many reasons to be excited about the arrival of another WHL season. As the premier junior hockey league in the world, we all take great interest in watching the remarkable progress our top prospects make during the course of the WHL season. From the established WHL veterans already drafted by NHL Clubs, to the top rated prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, to the new crop of highly touted rookies entering the WHL, these young stars will excite fans in all of our WHL markets. The WHL provides an ideal environment for players to develop as they continue to pursue their dream of playing in the NHL or representing their country in a major international competition. Many of these top draft eligible prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft will have the opportunity to showcase their skills as the WHL hosts the CHL / NHL Top Prospects game, January 15, in Calgary. The WHL also takes great pride in offering our players the best academic and hockey opportunities possible, as we award over 325 WHL Scholarships to graduate players each season, while more than 20 percent of all NHL players got their start in the WHL. As you cheer on your favorite WHL team in their quest to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth in the MasterCard Memorial Cup, I am sure you will enjoy watching the world’s finest young prospects in action throughout the WHL. TONIGHT’S OPPONENT HITMEN HEADLINES: Tonight the Calgary Hitmen (10-4-1-2) visit the Kootenay Ice (8-7-2-0) at Western Financial Place. Calgary is looking to rebound following a 4-2 home ice setback to the Edmonton Oil Kings Sunday evening. Jaynen Rissling (1g, 1a) and Zane Jones both extended their point streaks to three-straight games with goals for Calgary, while Edgars Kulda, Reid Petryk, Curtis Lazar and Brett Pollock scored for the visiting Oil Kings. Calgary goaltender Chris Driedger made 27 saves as the Edmonton outshot the Hitmen 31-16. VS. KOOTENAY: Tonight is the third of eight regular season meetings between Calgary and Kootenay, with each club posting a win following the first two games of the series. Last year, the Hitmen and Ice split the season series 4-4-0-0. Jaynen Rissling (2g, 1a), Jake Virtanen (1g, 2a) and Radel Fazleev (3a) top the Hitmen with three points each against the Ice in two games played. Jaedon Descheneau (3g, 1a), Jagger Dirk (1g, 3a) and Sam Reinhart (1g, 3a) lead the Ice with four points each against Calgary over the same span. The QMJHL will host the first two games of the series and the OHL will host Games 3 and 4. Chase, named the Ed Williams Player of the Month for October, is currently tied with Kootenay’s Jaedon Descheneau for most goals in the Eastern Conference at 13. TRADE WINDS: On Sunday, the Hitmen acquired a fourth round pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft from the Regina Pats in exchange for 20-year-old defenceman Jesse Zgraggen. A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Zgraggen recorded four goals and 15 assists for 19 points along with 46 penalty minutes in 47 games with Calgary. The Hitmen acquired the 6-1, 210-pound blueliner from the Victoria Royals in January 2013.
