ie Vorläufer der beiden Zeitungsmagazine Riviera – Das Magazin und Riviera RT Magazine waren die Riviera Côte d’Azur Zeitung und The Riviera Times. Zwei Zeitungen an der Côte d’Azur die, vor meinem Eintritt als Art Direktor 2011, beim Mediterraneum Verlag schon fast 24 Jahre existierten.

Meine Hauptaufgabe bestand darin ein neues Branding für die alten Publikationen zu kreieren, um die Zeitungen für Leser sowie Anzeigenkunden und Partner attraktiver zu machen.

Ich hatte schon 2013 die Idee und das Konzept für ein ganz neues Format aber die Geschäftsführung war noch nicht bereit für einen grossen Wechsel. 2014 war es dann soweit.

In meiner neuen Funktion als Creative Director konnte ich die Zeitungsmagazine Riviera – Das Magazin und Riviera RT Magazin nun endlich verwirklichen.

Die neuen Ausgaben hatten ein überraschendes Format (28,5 x 37), festeres Papier, erweiterte Themenbereiche, tolle Fotos und vor allem ein ansprechenderes Layout mit klaren Strukturen.

Gastronomischer Grenzgänger Mirazur-Sternekoch Mauro Colagreco: Bio-Küche mit Traumblick

Mango, Papaya, Bananen … Der B oule vard Garavan am südlichsten Zipfel Mentons gleicht einem tropischen Paradies. Hier, an der Grenze zu Italien, reifen dank des außergewöhnlichen Mikroklimas exotische Früchte wie nirgendwo anders in Frankreich. Prächtige Villen und herrliche Gärten verleihen der Gegend oberhalb des Mittelmeers ihren ganz besonderen Reiz. All das wusste Mauro Colagreco nicht, als er sich im Jahr 2005 unsterblich in diesen Ort verliebte.

Gewiss aber fühlte er tief in seinem Inneren, dass er hier seinen Lebenstraum erfüllen würde.

igentlich wollte der gebürtige Argentinier nach seiner Kochlehre in Buenos Aires nur zwei Jahre in Frankreich arbeiten. Doch obwohl seine Mutter nicht sehr froh über die Entscheidung war, stand bald fest, dass er im Land der Haute cuisine bleiben würde. Er investierte weitere drei Jahre in seine Fortbildung an der Hotelfachschule in La Rochelle. Dann gelang es ihm, einen Praktikumsplatz bei dem großen Chef Bernard Loiseau in Saulieu zu ergattern, und als dieser ihm anschließend eine Stelle als commis anbot, konnte er sein Glück kaum fassen. Doch dann beging Loiseau Selbstmord, angeblich, weil sein dritter Michelin-Stern in Gefahr war.

Tief erschüttert – Loiseau war für ihn wie ein Mentor gewesen und hatte ihn nachhaltig geprägt – ging Colagreco nach Paris, wo er in Spitzenhäusern wie L’Arpège von Alain Passard und im Plaza Athenée von Alain Ducasse arbeitete. «Aber es entsprach mir nicht, einer von 40 Köchen zu sein, ich wollte immer frei, selbstständig sein», sagt der oft ernst wirkende Mann mit den dunklen Augen. Er wechselte zum Grand Vefour von Chefkoch Guy Martin, doch gleichzeitig wuchs die Sehnsucht nach einem eigenen Restaurant am Meer.

Im Urlaub mit Freunden in Spanien erzählt er von seinem Traum, und einer der Gruppe meint, er kenne da ein Lokal an der Côte d’Azur, das seit langem geschlossen sei. Zurück in Paris, vergisst Mauro das Gespräch schnell wieder. Eines Tages, Ende Oktober 2005, klingelt sein Telefon, der Freund aus Spanien ist dran: «Bist du immer noch interessiert?» - Wenig später landet Mauro Colagreco in Nizza. Die Sonne scheint. «Das nahm ich als gutes Zeichen», erinnert er sich. Und als er das leer stehende Restaurant aus den 1930er-Jahren an der Avenue Aristide Briand oberhalb von Menton sieht, trifft ihn ein wahrhaftiger coup de foudre, er ist Feuer und Flamme. Doch dann seufzt er: «Ich habe leider nicht die nötigen Mittel.» Darauf der Inhaber: «Ich vermiete es Ihnen für ein Jahr, dann sehen wir weiter.»

Heute weiß der 39-jährige Mauro: «Ich war jung und sehr mutig, alles sprach nämlich gegen diesen Ort. Menton gilt nicht gerade als gastronomische Hochburg, und das Mirazur liegt weit ab vom Schuss. Außerdem kannte ich niemanden hier.

Aber wenn man verliebt ist, zählen rationale Argumente nicht.

Im April 2006 haben wir das Restaurant eröffnet. Heute kommen Gäste aus aller Welt zu uns, aber in den ersten Jahren war es sehr schwer.» Und doch: Bereits nach sechs Monaten kürte ihn Gault Millau zur «Entdeckung des Jahres», 2007 erhielt Colagreco seinen ersten Michelin-Stern, 2012 den zweiten. 2009 ernannte ihn wiederum Gault Millau zum «Chef de l’année» – das erste Mal, dass ein Nicht-Franzose diese Auszeichnung erhielt. Artikel in der Weltpresse wie der New York Times folgten.

Hinter all diesen Trophäen steht ein Mann, der seine Bescheidenheit und Bodenständigkeit nicht auf den ersten Blick preisgibt. Verwurzelt mit seiner Familiengeschichte, erklärt er seinen Erfolg so: «Es gibt kein Geheimnis. Ich liebe es, hart zu arbeiten, genau wie meine italienischen Großeltern, die nach Argentinien auswanderten. Sie lebten auf dem Land und aßen nur, was die Natur gerade hergab. Ich erinnere mich wie heute an die hausgemachten Ravioli und Tagliatelle meiner Großmutter und die Momente, in denen wir gemeinsam am Tisch saßen. Kochen als Symbol von Liebe, so habe ich das immer empfunden und möchte jetzt all das zurückgeben.» Mit einer Ausnahme: Sein bevorzugtes Gericht waren und sind Gnocchi di patate, die Spezialität seiner mamma. Die bereitet er nur zu Hause zu – «aus Respekt vor meiner Mutter».

Träumt Mauro von einem dritten Michelin-Stern? «Nein», antwortet er entschieden, «ich arbeite für die Zufriedenheit meiner Gäste, nicht für einen Stern.» Vielleicht ist auch das Schicksal seines Vorbilds Bernard Loiseau immer noch nicht vergessen.

In der Küche des Relais & Châteaux-Hauses Mirazur arbeiten bis zu 25 Personen aus Argentinien, Italien, Neuseeland, Japan, Venezuela, Amerika und Kolumbien. Aber so kosmopolitisch sein Team auch ist, die Herkunft seiner Zutaten ist streng lokal.

Into the blue

Exploring the subaquatic ‘Wonderland’ of the Lerins Islands

One of the world’s most magnificent dive sites is waiting to be discovered on the do orstep of bustling C annes BY SARAH HARVEY

felt a surge of excitement as a blur of turquoise water and bubbles flashed in front of my eyes: I was upside down after rolling backwards off a boat, but couldn’t be happier. Rest assured it was no accident that I had ended up like that - I was on a scuba diving excursion to one of the Riviera’s most spectacular dive sites, ranked among the best in the world. It was 9.30am as we tumbled backwards off the side of the Sacre Bleu one by one; some of my companions letting out whoops of glee. I got my bearings and bobbed up to the surface. “Everything OK?” said my dive buddy, Patrick Mialot.

I nodded and made the ‘OK’ diving signal with my thumb and forefinger. “Great – then let’s dive!”. With that, we both deflated the air from our BCDs (jackets) and sunk into the depths.

Submerged beneath the yachts that dot the azure sea between Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat islands is the dive site known as Tombant de St-Ferreol . As if the pine forests and historical attractions of the picturesque islands aren’t enough on their own, this particular dive spot offers plenty of adventures, although many visitors to the island may be oblivious to what they are missing out on by not venturing beneath the waves.

With an underwater wall facing the open sea (known as a ‘drop-off ’) - which plunges down to 40m deep - it has a superb reputation as a dive site.

The co-owner of Easy Dive in Juan Les Pins, Alexandra Gran, told me the marine-life at the site usually includes barracuda,

OUTDOOR 05 octopi, moray eels, grouper, spiny lobster and gorgonian corals (sea fans). She even once saw a sea turtle there.

“It’s a beautiful dive site because the water is very clear and also because the water is very deep around the islands, so the biodiversity is great,” Alexandra said. “In spite of the number of boats there, there are a lot of fish there because fishing isn’t allowed in the area.”

It is also worth noting that this particular stretch of the Cote D’Azur was the birthplace of modern leisure scuba diving, with the first ever scuba diving club established just a stone’s throw away in Saint Raphael in the 1930s. By coincidence, St Raphael is also where I had my first ever experience of scuba diving (as an 18-year-old), so it seemed fitting that I was returning to the area some years later to explore again.

My dive buddy, Patrick, a qualified instructor, travels all the way from Grenoble to dive at this site and others around Juan-Les-Pins most weekends (a four-hour drive each way) - his enthusiasm was certainly a good indication of the quality of the diving experiences in the area. Patrick was already several metres below me, the trail of bubbles from his regulator snaking their way past me and up to the surface. As I descended, I was both impressed and relieved to discover the visibility was at least 20 metres and I immediately picked out the sight of several ruby-red sea fans growing on the wall.

The drop-off resembled a sheer cliff edge and was a hive of activity, bursting with colour. Unlike the kind of cliff found on the seashore, the colours were more vivid and the inhabitants more curious-looking in this underwater ‘Wonderland’. The rock was smothered in several different species of corals in shades of brilliant orange, pink and purple.

Lobster antennae shyly peeked out of the rocks, a defiant moray eel defended his home with its snapping jaws. The list of magnificent discoveries continued: spiky green sea anemones, a brilliant yellow sponge, a feather duster worm so diaphanous and bizarre-looking that it almost resembled a creature Lewis Carroll himself might have conjured up…

It was a comfortable 27c at the surface but as we descended below 20m deep the temperature began to drop to about 16c. For divers familiar with the Mediterranean that’s unremarkable, but as someone who has just moved from the Maldives (where I qualified as a PADI Advanced Diver in the balmy 29c waters of the Indian Ocean) – it was a tad concerning. However, thanks to a 5mm thick full-length wetsuit (complete with hood, gloves and booties) it wasn’t the rude awakening I was expecting.

“The water around the islands never gets colder than 12c or 13c,” Alexandra told me later. “In the summer it can get up to 25c or 27c in the shallower areas, so you can dive here all year round.”

After the first 20 minutes we turned a corner from the outside reef I saw the rippling water of a thermocline ahead.

A thermocline resembles a heat-haze, but obviously is underwater. This rippling effect on the water is found where a colder body of water meets a warmer body of water. Despite being snug inside my wetsuit (apart from where the water was in direct contact with my cheeks), I happily swam towards it. By contrast it was like stepping into a warm bath.

We swam over a plateau covered in seagrass with brilliant red starfish lurking amongst the green fronds. I recognised many of the Mediterranean ‘cousins’ of several species I know from my regular diving and snorkelling jaunts in the Indian Ocean, it was almost like seeing old friends again.

They included the tiny electric-blue damselfish with orange fins, and the hulking form of a large grouper. He took us by surprise towards the end of the dive as we passed by a crevasse he was hiding in: clearly I was happier to see him than vice versa. The 2m-long fish eyed us suspiciously as we swam past, continuing to watch us warily until we had passed right out of sight.

All too soon our 45 minutes were up, and the bright rays of the sunlight lancing through the water were calling us back to the surface. As we made the regulatory ‘safety stop’ for three minutes at five metres deep I couldn’t help looking back down into the blue, wondering what other surprises it would yield next time I returned.

“It’s both a great site for diving and a complicated site for diving,” Alexandra told me after we got back to the Easy Dive Centre at Port Gallice. “…It’s a great dive site because it’s very clear water and there are some very nice sites around the St Lerins Islands, including the Tombant de St-Ferreol which is one of the best dive spots in the world.

“However, there are so many boats there in the summer that you can almost cross from one island to the other by walking across the boats! In some ways that’s great because it means everyone can see how beautiful it is here. But on the other hand a lot of boats cause damage with their anchors and by throwing their rubbish overboard. If they’re just staying for a few days they might not understand the damage they’re doing. We wish the area was a reserve, but it’s not. It’s a touristy spot, so it’s very important for Antibes that boats can go and anchor there, but education is important.”

Although the Lerins Islands are not officially designated as a protected conservation zone, the local authorities in Cannes promote several initiatives to help keep the underwater environment as pristine as possible; hence the clarity of the water is still particularly good.

Alexandra believes the initiatives have been effective in helping to maintain the area’s reputation as a world-class diving destination, although they could go slightly further.

“They make an effort to protect it with a lot of underwater and beach cleaning initiatives, and they try to make people aware of the damage their anchors can do,” said Alexandra, who knows the area like the back of her hand, since she has been running Easy Dive in Juan-Les-Pins and Cannes with her husband, Gregory Poirier, for 14 years.

The couple, along with other members of the community, have suggested to the authorities that large buoys should be installed around the Lerins Islands for boats to moor on, rather than dropping their anchors which can damage the underwater flora and fauna.

“We’re trying to get buoys put near the islands so we can go and anchor on them rather than on the reef. We all need to work together to protect the marine environment.”

With such an exquisite and delicate ecosystem living in parallel with one of the most popular tourist hotspots in the country, let’s hope the Lerins Islands dive sites retains its world-ranking and others will be able to explore its magical sights for many years to come.

More megayachts than ever before at the 25th Monaco Yacht Show Every big name is the superyacht business descends on the Principality once a year. And each September we invite our readers on board with us to experience the Monaco Yacht Show ...

T

he world’s biggest shipbuilders and industry players aren’t stopping for a second to rest on their laurels in 2015 – they are all heading to the Principality to bring their latest innovations to the world’s most magnificent industry event. The four-day Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) experience will include no less than 40 world premieres: Boats that have never been revealed to the public before.

A total of 121 superyachts will be moored at Monaco’s main port, Port Hercule; more than ever before in previous years, and this time including even more of the largest vessels. While the quay which usually separates the port and the open sea is usually reserved for cruise ships, during the course of the show it has been set aside exclusively to display a few of the biggest yachts, over 100 metres long.

Regular visitors to the exhibition might have to reorientate themselves with the layout, because due to works in the northern port, the actual event has been relocated to the southern part of the quays. While the big tent "Parvis Piscine" retains its usual place by the swimming pool as well as the "Darse Sud" marquee right next-door; the former "Darse Nord" structure has been relocated to the Quai Antoine Ier, the square between the former Yacht Club and Stars’n’Bars.

More than 500 exhibitors are showcased in the tents yachts designers, maker of luxury goods, ship brokers and more. They will present the latest innovations and trade

deals at the show. And as per tradition, the team of Riviera RT Magazine will also be on hand to meet our loyal readers on our own stand, QP 57.

The yachts – which by the way have an average length of about 40 metres – will be as usual mainly found in the northern port area. Visitors won’t have to walk too far when traversing from one quay to the next, since shuttle boats are being laid on from the central Quai de l’Hirondelle (by the new Yacht Club) – ferrying visitors to five different piers.

But the atmosphere itself of the MYS, filled with enthusiastic wandering visitors; the snatches of countless languages filling the air; the frenetic activity and excitement – it’s difficult to put into words. There’s only one solution: stop by and see for yourself!

ince 2005, luxury brands and independent craftsmen - supported from day one by Prince Albert II of Monaco - have collaborated on “Only Watch” with one common goal in mind: supporting research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. And this edition of the unique event, in aid of the ‘Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies’, will be launched in Monaco for the first time ever, at none other than the MYS. Duchenne is one of the most common and severe forms of muscular dystrophy. It usually affects boys in early childhood; men with the condition typically only live into their 20s or 30s.

The idea to organise the event in aid of the ‘Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies’ was the brainchild of former MYS CEO, Luc Pettavino, whose son suffers from Duchenne.

So far, the biennial auction of several highly sought-after designer watches has generated more than €15 million for the charity, and has contributed to significant advances in research over the plast 10 years. This success was driven by the sincere commitment of all the CEOs, their teams and many partners, who were all united by their concern for helping this noble cause. One hundred per cent of the money was ploughed into research for the as-yet incurable Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

And this time, in 2015, 44 unique watches will go under the hammer for the good cause. But what is new about this sixth edition of "Only Watch" is that the auction won’t take place at the start of the Swiss watch week in Geneva in November. Instead it will be this month at the Monaco Yacht Show.

During the MYS the individual timepieces will be unveiled to the public before being conveyed around the world to Hong Kong, Beijing, New York, London and Geneva. The collection flies to China to be unveiled to aficionados in Hong Kong (2-5 October) and in Beijing at the Salone Monaco in Parkview Green (9-12 October). The American clientele will also have a chance to admire the watches in New York (17-20 October, Phillips offices) before they reach London (24-27 October, Phillips offices). The collection will finally be displayed in Geneva (5-7 November).

The 44 exclusive timepieces were donated by designers from renowned houses such as Blancpain, Chopard, Piaget and Zenith. Experts, donors and collectors from around the world have provided the unique pieces free of charge.

Only Watch 2015 is organised by ‘Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies’, Monaco Yacht Show and Phillips, in association with Bacs & Russo.

To this day, scientists and clinicians working on Duchenne muscular dystrophy agree that exon skipping (a form of RNA-splicing used to cause cells to ‘skip’ over faulty or misaligned sections of genetic code, leading to a truncated, but still functional, protein despite the genetic mutation) seems to give the best chance of success. As we approach an important milestone, the research team still requires more funds to facilitate progress. “Only Watch” will continue to support them in their research, which not only gives hope for the future but also delivers concrete results.

There was a time when this jewel of modern architecture looked like it would fade into the history books, but an impressive reconstruction has returned Eileen Gray’s masterpiece to the public for their viewing pleasure.

A

s our small entourage of architects, admirers of Eileen Gray and journalists walk down the half-kilometre path towards Villa E-1027 for a special viewing, we hear stories about the iconic Irish designer who became a pioneer in modern architecture. In the sky above, a helicopter is circling incessantly between the property and the train station of Roquebrune Cap Martin, carting materials from the white avantgarde villa.

“Eileen Gray had to make do without helicopters,” our guide tells us.

“When the villa was built at the end of the 1920s, materials had to be trolleyed in on the tracks at night when no trains ran.” Indeed, the land is situated on an isolated, steep, rocky outcrop descending through lush vegetation to the sparking Mediterranean Sea. Our guide is Paris-based Englishman Michael Likierman, a long-running businessman in France. He chairs the Cap Moderne Association, which comprises this villa, a log cabin (Le Cabanon) created by the legendary Le Corbusier, L’Etoile de Mer restaurant, and five camping units, also designed by Le Corbusier.

While blending in perfectly with this contemporary surround, Villa E-1027 is in stark contrast to the extravagant, charming Provençal homes that fill the Riviera coastline. With its flat roof, the property is pieced together in different sized blocks and stands on reinforced concrete stilts. You can only imagine the gasps of disbelief upon its completion in 1929.

The interior is as ground breaking as the exterior: folding glass patio doors (which were unheard of at the time), mood wall lighting, extensive use of skylights, a glass spiral tower marking the stairs to the roof, sharp edges, and bold geometric shapes and patterns.

Yet there is a smooth transition between all the rooms, which are not particularly large. “She did not like boundaries,” says Denis, a neighbour and member of the Cap Moderne Association.

ased near Lausanne, Christian Coigny has for the past 35 years developed a career in traditional black and white photography in parallel to his work in publicity and fashion.

His work is anchored in a classical education and strongly influenced by American painters such as Edward Hopper. Important brands as Chopard jewellers called upon him to transpose his individual mark into their advertising campaigns. Coigny now devotes most of his time to his personal work whilst exhibiting at various galleries and museums in Europe.

“ASYLUM-SEEKERS WELCOME”

Alpes-Maritimes sub-prefect: Refugees seeking sanctuary from persecution will not be turned away . On the doorstep of one of Europe’s most affluent communities, refugees are sleeping beneath sun umbrellas on the jagged rocks of the seashore; flimsy tarpaulins flutter on the esplanade.

Ventimiglia has become the epicentre of an unofficial refugee camp which has sprung up in the midst of the picturesque Ligurian seaside resort. At the time we went to press, Red Cross volunteers were distributing an average of 150 breakfasts, 250 lunches and 200 dinners per day to refugees.

The refugees in Ventimiglia are almost all male; three young boys have been taken into care by the municipality’s social services department so far. An average of 60 to 70 new refugees are arriving in Ventimiglia each day.

They risked their lives to get to Ventimiglia on the French-Italian border, and many of them, still weak and disorientated from their perilous journeys, are hoping to continue their travels onwards from the Italian Riviera in order to find asylum elsewhere in Europe. Charities including the Red Cross are helping to feed and clothe the refugees, as well as some remarkable individuals with no previous history of collaborating with aid agencies; residents of the Cote d’Azur and Italian Riviera

who were united by a basic desire to help. While the French Government has announced it will accept 24,000 refugees over the next two years and has already accepted 1,000 - some refugees are being deported from France on arrival. This includes a number of refugees attempting to enter the country from Ventimiglia via Menton, who are being sent directly back to Italy. Reports in local newspaper Nice Matin suggest the figure could be as high as 100-200 per day. There are

France attracted a great deal of condemnation after it emerged last month that a far-right mayor in Beziers, Languedoc, stormed into a Syrian refugee squat in his town and attempted to evict the family, telling them “You’re not welcome here”.

Earlier the same month, another influential French Mayor caused outrage by saying only Christian refugees should be accepted in the country to avoid an influx of “disguised terrorists”.

Speaking about the role of local mayors in the refugee debate, PACA senator, and mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, said: “Many mayors did not wait for the government to act. For example, Nice already hosts many Eastern Christians, this isn’t because we’re being exclusive, it is not the religion or nationality that is the determining factor. But the State cannot lean on communities to overcome its inability to solve this problem. We do not have to compensate for François Hollande’s lack of courage.

“The government does not understand that Europe is facing one of the most serious challenges in modern history. It is necessary to distinguish between economic migrants and refugees. There is a list of countries - Syria, Libya, Iraq, Eritrea – whose citizens are entitled to request asylum.”

Estrosi stressed the importance of the community as a whole pulling together to deal with the situation. “We must help all individual and collective initiatives conducted by those who are willing to demonstrate their generosity. We can help to bring together these initiatives - volunteers, families, charities, religious institutions etc.”

But Estrosi insisted that government resources should be concentrated on those seeking asylum in France, for whom France has a duty of care, and that the current system needs to be updated.

Alpes-Maritimes sub-prefect, Sébastian Humbert, told us that no refugees wanting to claim asylum in Alpes-Maritimes are being turned down: “We are not refusing any”, he said.

“Even if it sounds unbelievable, the reality is, the majority of those coming into France at Menton don’t want to ask for asylum in France. They want to go to the UK, Sweden, Denmark etc. That is why we send them back. If they were asking for asylum here, they would have to stay here.”

Humbert said 559 refugees have claimed asylum in the region so far in 2015. The majority were Chechen, with the second largest group from Ukraine, followed by Albania, Syria, Iraq, Georgia and Afghanistan. He added that only 11 refugees crossing from Ventimiglia have asked for asylum in France so far in 2015.

Two associations in the Alpes-Maritimes Department have been charged with looking after the refugees in so-called ‘CADA’ homes especially designated for asylum-seekers: they provide a total of 346 beds. A further 250 asylum-seekers have been put in hotels, mostly in Nice. The

“We must reform the asylum for better protection,” he said. “If we are to protect the refugees we have a duty to accommodate them. It is particularly important to reform the asylum system without further delay so that it is not abused.”

The PACA senator concluded that Europe has a key role to play in the humanitarian crisis and called for the EU to secure the Schengen area, in order to hit the traffickers, and to strengthen cooperation with Africa. He suggested the EU could create assembly points under its control, where refugees are welcomed and cared for.

“From these points, one could examine the eligibility of asylum cases and then make an allocation in the EU countries,” he said, adding that Gulf countries should do more to help.

Gegen seine Entscheidungen können bei der Berufungskommission für Flüchtlinge (CRR) Rechtsmittel eingelegt werden.

Der jüngsten Reform von Juli 2015 zufolge wird dem Bewerber ein Aufnahmezentrum zugewiesen, das nicht notwendigerweise am Ort des Erstantrags liegt.

In Frankreich existieren zwei Unterbringungsformen der Erstaufnahme für Asylbewerber: 34 Aufnahmezentren (PADA), von denen 23 von gemeinnützigen Trägern betrieben werden, und 273 staatliche Aufnahmezentren (CADA) mit 25 410 Plätzen (Ende 2014). In diesem Jahr ist die Bereitstellung von 5000 weiteren Beherbergungsplätzen geplant.

Kinder von Asylbewerbern unterliegen ab dem Alter von sechs Jahren der Schulpflicht. Der Besuch einer Ecole Maternelle (ab drei Jahre) ist dagegen freiwillig.

What role do they play in the daily life of your commune?

Marc Daunis: We do not keep statistics...but the expat population is actually quite apparent from looking and listening as you stroll through the streets...This is probably the charm of our village, but there’s also the strong international appeal of the Technopole. We welcome people from around the world, who find lots of enticing career opportunities in Valbonne Sophia Antipolis - and a quality of life envied by many, it seems!

Does having a large expat population create any issues - or is it seen as an advantage to the community - or both?

It is obviously an advantage! There are over 60 nationalities in our community, from every continent! So we have an open spirit and a beautiful energy. We are enriched by our cultural, economic and social exchanges. This is evident, for example, in the crèches where the young children are immersed in this multicultural environment. The same goes for the University, or at SKEMA – the largest business school in France, where this diversity is seen as a strength

which attracts students. We will never lose our heritage and cultural traditions, but rather will gladly share it with newcomers. It is an ongoing cultural exchange, which has become quite normal in Valbonne. I love the French language, but am happy to describe it as the ‘Sophia Way of Life’.

Is there much integration/interaction between the French and the foreigners?

Of course; firstly, in the professional world, links are forged every day amongst all the nationalities. We participate in an international exchange - Sophia’s trademark - which explains the dnamism of our environment. This kind of interaction is also prominent at the school, which brings children and families from around the world together, besides offering plenty of other opportunities that enable us to strengthen our sense of belonging to a community. We celebrate traditional holidays and organise cultural activities throughout the year - a collaboration of 30associations. It can be clearly seen during the Fest’inval, an event which brings together all the cultures and takes place every year in September.

Farbenspiele, Typokompositionen, die Liebe zum Detail, die Liebe zum Papier und auch die „Vermischung“ von verschiedenen Papierarten sowie auch Verpackungskonzepte, geben der Brochüre ihr ganz persönliches Image. Es ist immer wieder eine der spannendsten Herausforderungen, da einem, anders als bei Anzeigen oder Editorial-Design, fast unendliche Möglichkeiten an Gestaltungsmitteln und auch Druckveredelungen zur Verfügung stehen.
