Strength in Numbers As 2010 comes to a close we have the opportunity to look back over our accomplishments and our failures over the past year. We also take a moment to look forward to the good that is to come. As Knights of Columbus we can be proud of our order and our fellow brothers. 2010 saw much strife in the world and Knights were there every step of the away. When a mine collapsed trapping Chilean miners, Greg Hall was brought in to lead the rescue team. Greg is a 3rd Degree member of our order and a deacon in training. Greg tells us that the most important part of the rescue plan was prayer. It has been almost one year since the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Catholic Charities, including the Knights of Columbus were some of the first relief efforts on the scene and continue to be so today. For the Knights it started with emergency relief funds and support. Next came wheel chairs, more that 2,200 were shipped to Haiti.

Building Fund Construction of the new Chancery office is underway and proceeding. We look forward to the two parish meeting rooms which are being built into the building and will be the future home of our council meetings. The parish is paying for these rooms independently from

the diocese and the Knights are proud to support the endeavor. At our Annual Christmas Dinner Grand Knights Stefan Farrow presented Father Wayne with a cheque for $10 000 towards the parish share of costs.

However, November 8th is the date that we can be most of proud of. On that day the Knights of Columbus with their partners prepared the first shipment of prosthetic limbs destined for children in Haiti. The Knights of Columbus has pledged approximately $1 million towards providing prosthetic limbs to the more than 1,000 children who lost limbs in the quake, the medical care, and therapy to literally get them back on their feet. Let us not forget those in need close to home. This year the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (St. Charles Garnier Chapter) reports that food and monetary donations are down nearly 50% while requests for Christmas hampers is up considerably. Our council has generously provided them with emergency funding totaling $1000, but I would encourage all Brother Knights to give what you can not matter how small. Every day we see, hear and encounter those who are homeless, hungry, wanting, and injured. As Brother Knights we are a warm place to sleep, a hot meal, a child’s Christmas gift, and a shoulder to lean on. We are “Our Brother’s Keeper” and it is our responsibility as Knights of Columbus to make Christmas a joy for everyone. Merry Christmas! - Stefan Farrow - Grand Knight

Knights - The Life Blood of the Order - Recruitment

OF THE MONTH Coming Soon! It is important to recognize those brother Knights who go above and beyond. Please nominate a brother Knight today by passing their name to Brother Bill Rodden.

BEST METHODS OF RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS Recruiting new members does not need to be a complicated process. The simplest way for us to recruit more members is to be active members ourselves and ask other catholic men to join us. When someone you know sees you volunteering with the Knights at a Church Breakfast, BBQ, or other Charity event their respect for the Knights and what our Order stands for increases. Now you just have to ask them if they have ever considered becoming a Knight. Tell them how much you March 1 2011 enjoy your experiences and invite them to St. Charles Garnier Parish join. If they say no be respectful of their wishes and see if they have any questions Support Brother Ne il during about our Order. If they they still decline wait h i s O rd i n a t i o n to the Priesthood. until another occasion and politely ask them Br. Neil has been an important again. membe

This one-to-one approach to recruitment is more appealing to todays population and almost the only way to attract members under the age of 30. It is also much easier than targeting large groups of men at the same time, and allows us to recruit 12 months a year. Reprinted from Oct Edition

Congratulations to new Brother Joseph Lawrence on his appointment to the position of Youth Director. Br. Joe is a leader with the Parish Youth Program and will serve as an invaluable link between the youth of the parish and our council.

For the past few years our council has been without a lecturer. At our December council meeting, with the support of the Board of Trustees and the executive Grand Knight Stefan Farrow appointed Brother Jim Spencer to position of Lecturer. Please offer your support to Brother Jim as he takes on this endeavor in support of our council’s spiritual growth. We have no doubt that he will bring something of interest to our attention at each council meeting. Remember, the only way to witness the lecturer’s regular presentation is attend the General Meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Congratulations are also offered to Franz and Andrew Wipfli. This Father and Son team joined the Knights and are now members of our council in the 1st Degree.

If you have ideas for articles or photos of events please forward them to the Grand Kn ight for inclusion in this news letter.

It has been brought to our attention that our council does not have many Church or Family programs. One of the main reasons that these programs are difficult to come by in our council is the lack of volunteers to fill the directors position for those programs. Please consider stepping forward to help make our council more vibrant.

This newsletter will be published monthly, distributed by email, and made available at cou ncil meetings and in the church lob by. Due to the high cost, it will not be mailed on a regular basis. To ensure delivery ple ase ensure that we have a curre nt email address.
