Rights Catalogue Autumn 2010

July 2010 Dear Friends and Colleagues, I would like to point out three highlights from Kösel-Verlag's upcoming autumn list: You are perhaps familiar with the award-winning documentary filmmaker and best-selling author Clemens Kuby, who used mental procedures to cure himself of his paraplegic condition. With his important book Mental Healing – The Secret of Curing Oneself he presents his "home pharmacy" of self-healing. The Swiss expert in moral values Susanne Stöcklin-Meier is a major success story, having sold more than one million books, translated into ten different languages. In her new book Play: The Language of the Heart which is appearing on the occasion of her 70th birthday, the UNESCO honouree and educational-play specialist shares her rich experience with the public – an opportunity for all those who have, or work with, children. In Who Are You, God? Anselm Grün, one of the most important spiritual authors in the Germanspeaking world, again joins up with his colleague Wunibald Müller, a theologian and psychotherapist, to share with readers a moving conversation about their experiences of a life with God. Since the catalogue will no longer be sent by post but as a pdf file, you will now receive two separate English previews – one for Kösel-Verlag and one for the Diederichs Verlag. If you have any questions or would like to order sample copies, please feel free to contact me. Best wishes,

Routine – but right! If man is a creature of habit, then learn how to ride it! Although routines often offer se curity, they can become a trap if they block personal development. This lively advice book shows that all habits – the good as well as the bad – follow a particular stimulusresponse pattern. If we know how this pattern works, instead of being stalled by our inner demons, we react immediately and automatically in an appropriate way. Habit no longer controls us, but we control habit.

It's great to have Granny and Gramps! The percentage of elderly people is growing in our societies, significantly altering the situation of today's grandparents. Using numerous interviews, the Swiss psychotherapist Elisabeth Schlumpf shows that grandparents are as important as ever, so long as they are able to build a relationship with their grandchildren. Children learn much about their roots from their grandparents, and receive from them feelings of security and acceptance. In turn, grandchildren keep their Granny and Gramps young and fit.

A burnout need not be a knockout "There's no reason why someone can't regain their energy within five days after a burnout." However provocative this statement by Horst Kraemer may sound, he in fact has succeeded in helping many people recover quickly and efficiently from burnout using neuro-imaginative methods that he himself developed. Using these methods, which require a commitment of only a few days, coaching that strengthens personal res ponsibility can quickly – and sustainably – help patients feel healthy again.

Why we do what we wish we wouldn't This handbook reveals how the Devil teaches his servants to successfully lead people into temptation and away from God (called "the Light"). Temptation refers to all the situations people fall into that they think they can manage alone – in other words, without God's assistance. At the same time, the Devil's handbook unintentionally reveals how we can resist his tricks in our daily lives. Arm yourself with these strategies and you can beat the Devil using his own tactics! The author presents an ironic book on the art of living that helps us to develop our own strategies to avoid self-betrayal.

Lost in the labyrinth of the soul A book about lunatics – what does that have to do with me? A psychiatrist shines a light on our seemingly baffling psyche and claims that the soul actually has a well-defined structure. He shows how psychic illnesses are by no means mysterious but are linked to particular development stages in human evolution. Thus it becomes clear that there is logic behind typical psychological problems, which exist for "good" evolutionary reasons. This also explains why we so often have only a superficial understanding of ourselves and sometimes know so little about our depths.

Second-generation wounds The children of the generation who were children during the Second World War might have been spared the horrors of the actual war. Yet they often bear psychological injuries, which are manifested in such feelings as deep loneliness, a diffuse, depressed attitude toward life, and fear of their own emotions. Even 65 years after the end of the war, many people suffer from a wide variety of traumas. As a person born in 1959 put it: "Our parents cleared away the rubble of the destroyed houses with their hands – we, the next generation, are busy with the clearing away of mental rubble." The experienced psychologist Bettina Alberti shows how it is possible to recover the language of the spirit. Author: Title: Subtitle:

For children aged 2 to 8 Nothing drains people of energy more than sleepless nights. When the going-to-bed process takes too long, parents' nerves are on edge. This book helps parents put their children to sleep without recourse to complicated or controversial methods. Numerous approaches, including rituals, whispered stories and massage, relax children and prepare them for sleep. Among the wide variety of choices offered by the author, parents can find a method that suits both them and their child, since each child is different: While one requires a massage to settle down, another might need to walk around first. Scents can make learning easier When it comes to succeeding in school, following one's nose is literally the right approach. Essential oils improve schoolchildren's concentration and motivation and reduce aggression, as has been proven by the Germany-wide project Dufte Schule (which, though it translates literally as "Terrific School", plays on the German noun Duft, meaning "scent"). The project's initiator, Axel Meyer, demonstrates in this book how children can best be benefited, both at school and at home, by natural fragrances.

Judith Dimke-Schrader, born in 1970, lives in a patchwork family with four children. She studied theology and German and teaches at a vocational college. In her free time, she does volunteer work, assisting mothers in her community.

Living with Children

A gift for stressed-out mothers Despite cares and stress, the life of a mother is rich. Judith Dimke-Schrader writes of both wonderful and difficult moments in a mother's daily life, tracing a spiritual path through the year that is based on specific times and festivals. She integrates daily routine into a deeper reality, proposing specific breathing spaces that allow mothers to experience themselves as well as the Divine. Her plea is for mothers to leave perfectionism behind them and pause occasionally, to renew their strength and experience their blessings.

Solving conflicts with teachers constructively The relationship between parents and teachers often ranges from complex to volatile. Their conflicts can be gruelling and marked by a great deal of anger and perplexity. Frequently, the two camps are entrenched in their positions. This book shows parents what they can do to prevent their child from suffering from a difficult parent-teacher relationship. In so doing, it refers to the "classics" among parent-teacher combustion points, such as homework, marks, transition to a secondary school, etc. Brosche's message: Solving conflicts with teachers is not so difficult after all, and it is well worth doing for the good of the child. Spiritual and therapeutic assistance for victims The Catholic Church is in turmoil. In alarming numbers, victims of sexual abuse are stepping forward and accusing priests, monks and teachers. Given the victims' need for unconditional support, a view comprising varied perspectives on the reasons behind the current emergency situation is crucial. The experienced psychotherapist and theologian Wunibald Müller is a renowned authority on the issue of sexual abuse in the church. He explains the primary causes for abuse (celibacy, homosexuality, paedophilia, etc.), analyses hierarchical relationships that can lead to abuse and delivers spiritual and therapeutically sustainable assistance, in order to meet the dramatic situation in a preventative and effective manner. Discovering God in our own life In this book Father Anselm Grün, one of the most important contemporary authors on spiritual matters, and Wunibald Müller, an experienced and well-known psychotherapist, speak openly about their experiences with God. Both the consolation of faith and doubt in the existence of God are discussed. As one citation from the book puts it: "We don't lay claim to knowing even slightly more about God than other people. … Perhaps our conversation will encourage people to speak about God with others or to take up a conversation with Him themselves … so that God has a chance to enter our everyday lives."

A modern interpretation of the Christian Credo "Those who don't know God are missing out on real life" – this is Thomas Ruster's theory. Yet do we understand or know what is meant by belief in God? Using practical examples and understandable language, the author makes the Christian credo accessible by explaining all dogmas biblically, with radical consequences for daily life. He questions, for example, the deification of the automobile and idolatrous worship of it; he denounces the financial system based on interest and compound interest, and puts a theological currency above them.

Let go and get going! Using the original path of St. Francis, which connects four monasteries in the Rieti Valley near Rome, important stages in the life of Francis of Assisi are reconstructed. At the same time, doors are opened to ideas about living successfully in face of today's many challenges. The book is a kind of travel guide to inner worlds, for the pilgrim's approach takes place in the heart. We need not leave our home in order to find our true origins. St. Francis can be our model on how to lead a spiritual life, which defines life's value not on the basis of outward appearances or possessions but through how we define ourselves through God: always loved, accepted and profoundly valuable, no matter what our life circumstances.
