Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce

21st Annual Dinner Auction

Stay tuned to the February edition of the “Fenton Focus” when we will divulge this information to you!

A Message From…

Mayor Polizzi City of Fenton Dear Chamber Members: Welcome to 2017, everyone! We are now met with a new year of opportunity, both in our personal lives and in the future endeavors of our various professions. I wish everyone a productive 2017in both areas! We will elect a new mayor this April. It will, indeed, be a new mayor, as I have chosen to not run for re-election. This was an extremely difficult decision for me to make. I have enjoyed immensely the time I have served as the Mayor of the City of Fenton. I have enjoyed meeting Fenton residents and business people in our community. It was a hard decision, but I am, first and foremost, a family man. My family is growing (ended 2016 with the birth of a new granddaughter) and I need — they deserve — for me to spend more time with them. That will be my priority for the near future. I think Fenton, as a city, has grown in esteem among our other Saint Louis County cities, and that is largely because of the tremendous work of the Chamber of Commerce – both staff and members - that we have here in the city. Sincerely,

Mayor Mike

A Year Later – Mayor Mike Polizzi reflects on Fenton after the flood The mayor of Fenton did not intend on 2015 ending the way it did. His daughter was getting married on New Year’s Eve. It was supposed to be one of his happiest days. Mother Nature, though, had other thoughts on her mind. “We were in a flooding situation before that day,” said Mayor Mike Polizzi. “But on New Year’s Eve, the bottom just fell out. I knew we were in trouble.”

water reached halfway (east to west) into Fenton Plaza. And then it just stopped.”

The flood of late December 2015 through the early days of January 2016 was historic. U.S. Geological Survey crews measured 18 record-high flood measurements along the Meramec River on Dec. 30, 2015, according to its website.

“There was no notice of that,” said Polizzi. “No time to tell the residents of Fenton and the greater Fenton community that that was going to happen.” He praised the Fenton Police and Fire Departments, who spent the next 24 hours circling through the residential communities in town in case residents needed help. “Residents couldn’t even contact 911 if they needed help,” he said.

The National Weather service reported that it was the wettest year on record in St. Louis with a total of 61.24 inches of precipitation, beating out the previously held record of 57.96 inches that fell in December 2008. It also claimed the record of the wettest December on record in St. Louis with 11.74 inches of rain, beating the old record of 7.52 inches from 1982. But what really sealed the inevitability of the historic dimensions of the flood, according to Polizzi, happened Dec. 26. On that day, St. Louis received a total of 4.87 inches of precipitation. This amount was: • A record for that day • A record for daily rainfall in the month of December • The third wettest day ever recorded in St. Louis history And then, two days later, St. Louis also was hit with a record rainfall for that day at 2.5 inches. According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the storm system brought a total 9.18 inches of rainfall to the St. Louis area. “The water just had nowhere to go,” said Polizzi. “It was coming up so fast here in Fenton. The winds were also very strong. We realized early on that using sandbagging for our normal first defense would not work well in this situation. For the first time in Fenton’s known history, the

But other firsts also happened during those flood days. AT&T’s substation was compromised by the water, and for safety’s sake, the company turned off the landlines and television services that were served by that substation.

Polizzi recalled another impressive display of kindness from the Fenton Fire Department. “Riverside Subdivision was a virtual island. The people could not get in or out – even for emergencies,” he said. “The water was still rising, and we had no idea at the time how high it was going to get. The Fire Department made a make-shift ‘road’ of rocks alongside the subdivision, and kept a fire truck parked there, too, for the duration. I’m sure that eased Riverside residents’ peace of mind.” “The most televised, unexpected, and scary event was seeing an entire house hit our new Meramec River Bridge,” Polizzi said. The scare, he said, was not knowing if there would be more houses that would follow. There weren’t. Once the rising waters subsided, those who could fixed and rebuilt. “It took over 10 months, but damage done to our city park and athletic fields have all been corrected,” Polizzi said. “As usual, the community – the residents, business leaders, civic leaders and civil servants – came together to ensure the safety of Fenton’s residents and businesses.”

Kick These Social Media Habits to Be Successful in the New Year! #1 Selling on Your Personal Page Unless you are Amazon.com, not everyone wants what you’re selling. Stop selling to your friends. They know you have a business and they know where to find you when they want to do business. An occasional mention of your business is fine. Spamming your friends is a big turn off.

#5 Automation Overload Scheduling every single post using an automation tool may seem like a time-saver. But your fans and followers are going to get suspicious and wonder if there’s a real person behind all those automated posts. If they start to unlike you or unfollow your account, you’re defeating the purpose.

#2 Being All Business on Your Business Page

#6 Trying to be Everywhere

People come to social media to learn, to be entertained and to build relationships. If you constantly promote your business on your page, you do not give your fans an opportunity to know you as a person and to develop the trust that can lead to business.

If you try to be everywhere, you will end up being nowhere. When you spread yourself too thin, it’s difficult to gain traction on any one platform. Find where your cniche congregates online. Focus on the one or two platforms where it makes the most sense for you to build community and establish yourself as a thought leader.

#3 Not Engaging With Your Followers Do not ignore your fans or followers. When someone takes the time to mention you, leave a review, or comment on a post, they shouldn’t hear crickets. If you don’t respond, it says you don’t value them. It could also indicate to them that your account is inactive. Neither of which is good!

#4 Being Inconsistent This might be the hardest habit to break. It takes effort to plan and carry out a social media strategy. Consistency builds momentum. Consider using a scheduling tool!

#7 Inappropriate Tagging Tagging and mentioning your friends or other business accounts with reckless abandon is another “spammy” maneuver which will get you unfollowed quickly. Use only hashtags that make sense and only mention accounts directly related to the subject of your post.

#8 Only Posting Text Long text posts are boring and rarely hold the reader’s attention. In the words of Sweet Brown, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!” Add some variety to your posts with images, video, or infographics. Posts with images or video are proven to get higher engagement and more shares.
