JUNE 2014

UniGroup President, “Undercover Boss” Star Speaks at June Luncheon UniGroup President Rich McClure encouraged Chamber Members to support free enterprise in his remarks at the June luncheon. McClure – the leader of United Van Lines, Mayflower Transit and several other transportation-related companies under the $1.7 billion UniGroup umbrella – has seen firsthand how business investments can create American jobs and support families. McClure shared a few stories about the faces of free enterprise – including those from his recent experience working with frontline workers during the filming of 2011 CBS reality show “Undercover Boss”. They included small business owners and entrepreneurs who are living the American dream. Free enterprise and the investment in jobs, McClure said, make the dream of growing a business and providing for a family possible for many. “Business and free enterprise are under attack,” he said, “Business is not the enemy –but the key to creating jobs.” Small business produces two out of every three American jobs, is nearly 40 percent of gross national product (GNP) and is the engine behind many technological innovations. They are worth protecting. McClure said if business leaders do not speak up, others will. He encouraged every individual to talk to their elected leaders and encourage them to make public policy that is job-creation friendly.

For me, the event that always reminds me that school is out and summer has started is the Business & Community Fair. Thank you to everyone who made this year’s event a success! We could not have done it without the support of our sponsors, vendors, volunteers and all other contributors. We had a wonderful luncheon this month with a speaker that was really exciting to host. Rich McClure is president of UniGroup, parent company of United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit. UniGroup is headquartered right here in Fenton! Rich shared some insights from his time at the helm of some of America’s best-known companies and talked about our role in protecting free enterprise and creating jobs. Rich also shared some of the unexpected lessons he learned from his experience on CBS’ “Undercover Boss”. The start of summer also marks the halfway point of the year. This is a great Greg Bresler (far right) pictured with FACC Exec. time to evaluate your business goals for the year and the track you are on in Director, Jeannie Braun, and UniGroup President, accomplishing these goals. At a time of the year that many families are Rich McClure at the June Member Luncheon! going on vacation, it is important to make sure your business is not going on vacation. While you are re-evaluating your goals, examine what role the Fenton Chamber is playing in your business plan. Here are a few questions to ask yourself…Have you made as many events as possible to gain face time with other members? Have you worked on your elevator speech and networking skills? What advertising, sponsorship or volunteer opportunities have you taken advantage of? The Chamber works hard to ensure we offer the most value possible for your membership. This year, the Fenton Chamber has been highlighting a membership benefit each month. This month’s “Benefit of the Month” is our smartphone mobile app. Some of the advantages of the app include access to a list of all current members, the ability to register and search the calendar for upcoming events, updates on Fenton community news, viewing of special member discounts and direct connection to the Chamber Office… It’s the Fenton Chamber at your fingertips. I would like to close this month’s article by congratulating our current Assistant Director, Lisa Rackley. Lisa will be the new Executive Director of the Affton Chamber of Commerce. Lisa has served the Fenton Chamber for 10 years and will be greatly missed by all! Thank you, Lisa for your dedication to the members and mission of the Fenton Chamber! … AND, as always, the Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce always has your back so Find it in Fenton First!! Sincerely, Greg Bresler, FACC President General Manager , Andre’s Banquet Facilities & Catering

HOW TO PROPERLY USE HASHTAGS IN YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING Hashtags are increasingly important in social media marketing campaigns. They enable content marketers to get in front of their target audience and identify social media conversations that are relevant to their business. Only 24% of tweets include hashtags, but those that do receive twice the engagement of those without them. When used well, hashtags can be powerful tools!

Hashtags are, in short, labels for content. They serve as a way to track topics on social media platforms. Anyone who shares content can add one to their messages and posts, helping people quickly find information on that same topic. The syntax is a word or phrase preceded by the hash/ pound sign (#), such as #contest and #sweepstakes. Each hashtag is clickable and redirects users to a page displaying all messages/images with the same hashtag. The use of hashtags enables people to interact only with the content that they find relevant. The following are the social media platforms that support hashtags.

Pinterest uses the same hashtag approach as the other platforms. You apply a tag which represents the topic of the post so that people can find your content in related searches. The hashtag is bolded slightly in your post, and it becomes a search link that forwards users to search/?q=Yourhashtag. When people now run that same search by clicking the hashtag on someone else’s profile, they’ll discover your content in the mix.

#TWITTER If you use Twitter, you know that the use of hashtags there is prevalent. They can help you organize your tweets and use your voice to deliver targeted brand messages. You can view trending hashtags on the sidebar of your Twitter page as well as via It’s easy to join in on a hashtag conversation by clicking on one in your own tweets or those of others. You can track hashtags to see which ones resonate most with your audience.

#FACEBOOK Facebook added hashtag support in June 2013, and their use hasn’t really caught on, relative to other platforms. Each hashtag on Facebook has a unique URL, and clicking on one will redirect you to its feed. You can also click on hashtags that originate on other services. You can search for hashtags from the Facebook ‘search’ bar using the syntax #Yourhashtag or by typing hashtag/Yourhashtag into your web browser. In each case, replace ‘Yourhashtag’ with the tag which you are trying to find. You can also create posts directly from the hashtag feed or search results.

Pacesetter Partnership

Edward Jones—Sean C. King

#INSTAGRAM Using hashtags on Instagram can help maximize your reach and create a network of influential brand followers. If you do not employ hashtags on Instagram posts, your photos effectively remain private, making it difficult for your target audience to discover you. Instagram “photo challenges” contain a unique set of hashtags. For example, #TBT or #ThrowbackThursday encourages users to post old/retro photos. Use at least one hashtag per photo to maximize shares, thus reaching a larger audience.

#GOOGLE+ Using hashtags is a good way to get your Google+ posts noticed in search engine results. When users click on a hashtag in Google+, the search results page (SERP) includes the original hashtag as well as posts with similar tags and keywords. Users can choose to arrange hashtagged posts chronologically or see the “Best of” posts at the top of their streams. Google+ will also intuitively add hashtags to posts if it thinks that they are relevant.

DON’T OVERUSE #HASHTAGS! Make sure to use a maximum of two hashtags per post. Including too many will leave the bad impression that you are spamming your followers and fishing for new ones.
