president’s corner... The Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce was honored to welcome U.S. Congresswoman Ann Wagner as our guest speaker at the September Membership Luncheon, held at Fenton’s own RiverChase Community Center (if you have not had a chance to visit RiverChase, please take a minute to stop by and learn about the many amenities they have to offer) and catered by Viviano’s Festa Italiano. Congresswoman Ann Wagner’s visit was definitely a highlight following a very busy August! On August 14th, the Chamber hosted a seminar to assist our members in learning about the very complex “Affordable Care Act” at which we had a panel of speakers who proved to be quite knowledgeable on the topic. A special thank you to Paul Carcagno with Fortune Insurance and David Christoff with Fischer & Christoff for chairing this event .
The following week, the Chamber hosted another highly successful Golf Tournament on August 19th at Tapawingo National Golf Club with 148 golfers and many more volunteers, sponsors and other contributors. I would like to send my gratitude to Vance Scherrer who served as Chairman of the Golf Committee along with everyone involved in making this day a great success. Additionally, whoever allowed us to have perfect weather that day… thank you, thank you, thank you! The 2nd Annual Fenton Days was held on August 24th and, though it was hot, most everyone seemed to have a great time, starting with a Parade, followed by kids’ activities, food and game booths and ending with the spectacular Fireworks display. Now on to current business… This fall will bring our annual Community Guide publication which will be directmailed to area homes and businesses! By now, you should have received your 2013-2014 Community Guide Registration Form in the mail to 1) double check your business listing/category info and make any necessary changes and 2) take the opportunity to purchase display advertising space for additional exposure for your business . Remember, this guide will come out right before the Holiday shopping season and is mailed to 10,000 homes and businesses in Fenton and surrounding areas! I hope to see you all at the October Membership Luncheon which will be held at Swing-A-Round Fun Town on Wednesday, October 2nd. This meeting will provide plenty of networking time along with good, old-fashioned fun! Take a moment to go to the Chamber website and sign up for the luncheon if you haven’t done so already! Thank you all for your continued support of the Chamber and, as always, SHOP CHAMBER MEMBERS FIRST! Rockwood Educator Named Missouri's Teacher of the Year!
Neighbors Credit Union Hosts Multiple Credit Report Seminars On August 13, 15 and 22, 2013 Neighbors Credit Union hosted their free annual Credit Report Seminars. Eric Clark, Vice President of Lending from Neighbors Credit Union, conducted the seminars. The seminars explained what a credit report and score is and how to read them with systematic instructions. Members learned where consumer-reporting agencies get their information from and what factors are used to calculate their score. Each registered guest received free educational materials and a copy of their own credit report and score to follow along with during the presentation. And, three lucky winners at each seminar walked away with gift cards and Cardinals baseball tickets that were given away as prizes. Nearly 100 attendees participated in the discussion at the seminars. Eric Clark, VP of Lending, stated, “Since credit reports are an important part of our financial lives, many of our members are eager to understand credit and find ways to utilize credit reporting to their advantage. I truly enjoy being able to share this valuable information. As a credit union, we aspire to share knowledge to improve our members’ financial future. Enabling members through knowledge is how our credit union lives out our mission every day.” For more information on upcoming Neighbors Credit Union Seminars, please visit www.NeighborsCU.org.
Jamie Manker, the Rockwood School District 2013 Teacher of the Year, has been named the 2013 Missouri Teacher of the Year. “I am honored and humbled,” Manker said. “My students are my reward and my reason for success. I am an outstanding teacher not because of what kids see me do while lecturing in front of them but because of what kids are able to do while I stand beside them.” Manker teaches social studies at Rockwood Summit High School. RSHS Principal Renee Trotier says Manker “embodies all of the characteristics of a quality educator. She works hard. She’s thoughtful. She’s knowledgeable. She’s collaborative. Most importantly, she treats her students with great respect. We’re very proud of her!” Manker holds both a bachelor’s degree in History and a master’s degree in Education from Truman State University. In addition, she earned National Board Certification, the profession’s top teaching honor, in 2009. Rockwood School District Interim Superintendent Dr. Terry Adams says the district is very proud of Jamie Manker. “This is an incredible honor, and it’s a reflection of the high quality educators who work in Rockwood.” Manker will now go on to compete in the National Teacher of the Year Program. Are Your Employment Verification (I-9) Forms Ready for Inspection? Article written by: David Davis of Davis Law, LLC Over the past few years, the number of employment verification audits conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased significantly. During that time, the fines collected and criminal penalties imposed have also increased significantly. So are your I-9 forms ready for inspection? Civil penalties can range from $110 to $16,000 per violation. Criminal penalties can range from $3,000 per violation to six months in jail. If your I-9 forms are not ready for inspection, then you should take the time now to get them ready. While many federal employment laws only apply to employers with a certain number of employees, the employment verification requires all employers to complete an I-9 form and verify the employment eligibility of each person hired. The forms must be retained for a minimum of three years after the date of hire or one year after the date of termination, which ever is greater. The I-9 forms and the required supporting documentation should be kept in a separate file (not the employee’s personnel file) in alphabetical order. Having a single file with all the I-9 forms will make complying with an inspection request must easier. Also, make sure that you are using the most recent I-9 form. ICE introduced a new I-9 form this year, which employers were required to start using on May 8, 2013. The current I-9 form can be found at: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf. The handbook to assist employers with completing form I-9 can be found at: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/m-274.pdf. David Davis is an attorney and founding member of Davis Law, LLC. He counsels and defends employers with regard to all areas of employment law. For more information, please see the firm’s website www.davis-law-llc.com.

What Type of Business Does Remote Deposit Work Best For?
Back to School with Social Media A Success!
Article written by: Jodi Clinton, Commerce Bank, Fenton Banking Center Manager
Any small business that accepts checks from customers is a good candidate for using Remote Deposit. Why is Remote Deposit such a good product for small business owners? Convenience is the main reason. It reduces trips to the bank by allowing you to electronically submit deposits 24/7. All you need is a computer and internet connection, along with the scanner. A software application converts the checks into images and sends them directly to your bank for deposit. The check images are then stored in a searchable database for your reference later on. You might be wondering if Remote Deposit is safe to use. I always recommend that business owners make sure the bank’s service is encrypted with the highest level of internet security available. You’ll also need to make sure that your business computer meets minimum system requirements, including processor speed, operating system, internet browser and high speed internet access to name a few. Your banker can help you determine whether you meet these requirements.
Social Media Expert Karen Fox, better known as "Karen THE Connector" conducted three sessions to assist Chamber members in getting started with Social Media for their businesses. Topics included: Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest and Google Plus. A huge thank you to our social media guru, Karen, for putting on this series! And what would the series be without attendees so thank you to everyone who made this event successful!
x n Fo ! Kare t work a hard
Small Business Remote Deposit is a simple and efficient way to make your bank deposits into your small business account without ever having to leave the comfort of your office. Not only that, you’ll be improving your funds availability, cash flow and operating efficiency. What’s not to like! For more information, contact Jodi Clinton at Commerce Bank, please call 636-349-6714.
