Clear Circulation and Functional Organization Research functions in the east wing and education functions in the west wing are connected by hallways, which all terminate in light and views. Four Years, Three Phases Designed to keep the medical school in operation during reconstruction on the same site, the project was phased removing approximately 25% of the original building to build approximately 65% of the new building, followed by removal of the remaining existing building to build the balance of the new building. Phase three converted temporary education spaces in the phase one building to research space. The phase one portion of the building was designed to stand on its own for nearly two years during the construction of phase two.

Atrium Fills Interior With Light The large clerestory and exposed curved structure fill the atrium with natural light. Helix inspired, transparent, curved walls on the west side of the atrium are juxtaposed against the more solid exterior wall system on the east side of the atrium. Circulation and study areas surrounding the atrium promote interaction between students and faculty. Cost Effective Design While similar facilities elsewhere are typically costing $260 to $360 per square foot, the Sanford School was designed to meet a budget of $195 per square foot.

On a site with four front yards and with an owner requirement that a stacked precast panel system be used, the facades relate to common themes among USD campus architecture – red brick and limestone, and interpret a DNA sequencing diagram. The geometry of the roof expresses the light monitor function as well as an exhaust fan and chiller screening function.
