L HERE AT SURFING MAGAZINE, WE PRETT Y MUCH LIVE AT THE BEACH. If we could, we’d make our office there (and sometimes we actually do). We know this beautiful beach culture like that perfect-fitting swimsuit at the end of a long summer, and we consider it our privilege to bring you in to the party. For our annual SURFING Magazine Swimsuit Issue, we’re sticking to that mission by presenting you with the hottest swimwear trends for 2015. This magazine isn’t just about a bunch of images of beautiful women in bikinis (although that never hurts). More importantly, it’s a style guide to help usher you into the latest and greatest swim looks of this blossoming year. After doing our homework and seeking out the top trends for 2015, we noticed a pattern: Styles from the past kept reappearing, specifically those classic looks from that magical age we like to call “The Golden Era of Swim.” Fashion trends are constantly changing, but often these trends are inspired by styles from past decades. In the world of swim, 2015 is full of crop tops, one-pieces, high-waisted bottoms, crochet and teeny bikinis — trends and styles that originated during the ‘60s and ‘70s. This era was an impor tant turning point in swimwear, as women were no longer afraid to show some skin and bikinis became a fashion piece. Most iconic swimwear designs were created during this time and its influences continue to show through in the styles of today. Inside these pages we pay homage to The Golden Era of Swim by bringing you the best of 2015. But the beach has also changed a lot since the days of Gidget — especially in the surf. Today, on a good day of waves in Southern California, stylish surfer girls are a bountiful sight in the lineup. That’s why, on top of our usual shoot with the models, we called up four of the world’s top female sur fers and invited them to Barbados to sur f and model for a Swimsuit Issue shoot of their own. Not only are these women amazing athletes and great role models, they’re also just plain gorgeous, as you’ll no doubt agree when you see the results of their shoot. We want you to feel comfortable and look your best no matter where you take your swimwear this year. Whether you want to lounge poolside all day, hit the road with your friends, go for a surf or just go down to your local spot for a beach day, we’ve hand-picked the finest swimsuits of 2015 for you. So dive in and find that next perfect bikini. Make this summer gold. — Kellie Cuttrell

Alexis Ren

Tereza Kačerová

Trew Mullen

At just 18, Alexis can already count over 650,000 followers on Instagram. The Santa Monica native was scouted to be a model while shopping at a Brandy Melville store when she was just 13. Since then, Alexis has worked shoots all over the world, but says her trip to Mexico for the SURFING Swimsuit Issue was special for the friendships she made. “We all became a family,” she says, “and I’m forever grateful.”

Originally from the Czech Republic, 22-year-old Tereza claims she broke into modeling when she won a contest during her “awkward phase” seven years ago. These days she splits her time between her Czech homeland, L.A. and wherever work takes her. Tereza loves to travel and says she’ll go pretty much “anywhere but Ibiza.” Tereza fell in love with the local food while we were in Mexico. Anytime we weren’t shooting (and sometimes even while we were shooting), she could be found munching on tacos and sipping piña coladas on the beach.

Trew is an L.A. girl who’s living proof that just because you’re home-schooled doesn’t mean you’re socially awkward. The fun-loving 21-year-old grew up traveling between Pennsylvania, San Jose and L.A. and remains besties with her only home schooling classmate, her sister. This was Trew’s first trip to the Riviera Maya, and she claims the water was the most perfect temperature she’s ever swam in, “like someone had microwaved it.” Trew says she’s still waiting for her breakout modeling moment: “My dreams are big, so let’s hope it hasn’t happened yet!”

Alessa Quizon

Quincy Davis

Sage Erickson

Bree Kleintop

Hailing from a long line of Hawaiian wave riders, Alessa was destined to become a great surfer. “I’ve been surfing for 12 years,” she says. “My dad taught me how to surf and it’s something that has been in my family for generations.” Alessa made her family proud by qualifying for the WSL women’s WCT in 2015 at the tender age of 21. She currently lives in Dana Point, CA, but says her favorite place on the planet to travel is still back home to Hawaii.

This trip was a bit of a homecoming for Quincy. Like many hardcore East Coast surfers, the 19-year-old from Montauk, New York, has been visiting the Caribbean on surf trips for years. She comes from a surfing family and has been riding waves since age 7. While she loved the waves in Barbados, she says Tortola in the British Virgin Islands is her favorite place on earth to visit. “I’ve gone with my family since I was really little,” says Quincy. “I went back recently and got such fun waves!”

Sage caught her first wave when she was 10 at inside Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Today, at 24 years young, she is one of the world’s top 17 women surfers competing on the WSL women’s WCT. Of all the amazing surf spots Sage has traveled to, she’s says she’s never seen water bluer than on our trip to Barbados. She’s also never met such a fashionable man as our swimsuit photographer. “The Cobrasnake was amazing to shoot with,” says Sage. “If only I could see his entire wardrobe firsthand. The man’s got style!”

An East Coast-turned-California girl, Bree is both a professional surfer and a professional model. “When I was 14, I started modeling for my sponsors and from there it just grew,” explains 20-year-old Bree. “I was approached and signed by an agency and I’m blessed to be able to still be surfing and growing my career as a model. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to meld together these two passions of mine.” Random fact: Bree never travels without hand sanitizer. “You can’t be too careful these days,” she says. “Too many germs floating around out there.”

“LITTLE ENGLAND,” LOTS OF FUN

1. 2.

3.

MMMM, BARBADOS. SOUNDS WARM. ISN’T THAT WHERE RIHANNA’S FROM? That’s right, take a bow. Barbados, a small, pear-shaped island about 250 miles northeast of Venezuela and the easternmost of the Caribbean islands, is also home to sugary white-sand beaches (some are even pink!), clear blue water and holiday resorts. The island is renowned for having the world’s best beach weather and the sublime goodness of Barbados rum punch. Known as “Little England” for its close cultural ties to its former colonial mother, Barbados is classy but far from stuffy, and a whole lot sunnier than foggy London. Oh, and did we mention Barbados boasts some of the most consistent surf in the Caribbean? Perfect reefs and Rihanna? Yep, we found love.

We still can’t believe how good we had it at the Sea Breeze Beach Hotel in Christ Church. The place is tucked away on a secluded corner of the island’s south coast and features a boutique atmosphere with just 78 rooms, which means we had two soft white-sand beaches practically to ourselves (which makes a swimsuit shoot a lot easier). With two swimming pools, three delish restaurants and jaw-dropping views of Oistins Bay, our ever y need was catered to by this luxurious four-star, all-inclusive resort. And with the vibrant nightlife of St. Lawrence Gap just a short cab ride away, our evenings were never boring. Safe to say, at the end of our stay, none of our crew was ready to say goodbye to the Sea Breeze.

• With a mixed population of some 280,000 citizens, Barbadians (also known as “Bajans”) are warm and hospitable people, most originating from West Africa and the United Kingdom. • Barbados enjoys a 98 percent literacy rate, and a very high percentage of the island’s youth attain a college or university education. • You are not allowed to wear camouflage in Barbados. • English is the country’s official language. Unofficially, it’s Bajan Dialect. • The grapefruit originated in Barbados. • Barbados is one of the only Caribbean islands home to green monkeys. The green monkey has lived on the island for more than 350 years. • The currency is the Barbadian dollar.

RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO:

AN ANCIENT PLAYGROUND

RIVIERAS ARE ALWAYS FUN. WHO’S MAYA? The Maya were an ancient civilization that once thrived from southern Mexico through modern-day Belize and Guatemala, well before Columbus showed up to the New World. Today the Maya’s awe-inspiring temples and pyramids remain at sites like Tulum, on the sparkling shores of the Riviera Maya along the Caribbean Sea. These ancient worlds are yours to explore, and just a short drive from world-class hotels, fine dining and luxurious beaches. From snorkeling with sea turtles to exploring archaeological sites to soaking up five-star resort hospitality, the Riviera Maya serves up the best of both the ancient and modern worlds.

SO, WHERE DID YOU GO?

PLEASE, TELL ME MORE.

WHERE DID YOU GUYS STAY?

OUR PLEASURE. HERE ARE SOME MORE FUN FACTS ABOUT THE RIVIERA MAYA:

Is there anything better than 24-hour room ser vice? Well, maybe 24-hour room ser vice overlooking a private white-sand beach with exclusive snorkeling lagoons. Luckily our friends at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya already made that combination a reality, which made our stay at their all-inclusive resort a truly unforgettable Mexican experience. With 1,264 guest rooms, all with their own hydro spa tub and full inclusive minibar, multiple pools, a full gym and spa, nine restaurants and eight bars and lounges on the property, the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya made sure our team was living like Mayan royalty.

• The Riviera Maya is a touristic 86-mile corridor, located on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, better known as the Mexican Caribbean. • The Great Maya Reef, stretching nearly 700 miles from the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula down to Honduras, is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and the second-largest reef system in the world. There are many places to explore the reef system along the Riviera Maya. • It is also home to several cenotes. What’s a cenote, you ask? It’s a natural swimming pool that was created when a sinkhole collapsed over a subterranean river millions of years ago. The water in cenotes is usually crystal-clear and makes a great place to swim and cool off on a hot day. • The average temperature is 80° F with more than 240 days of sunshine, and rain is rare. • The official language is Spanish, but indigenous Mayan languages and English are also spoken.

MARK HUNTER (AKA “THE COBRASNAKE”) @THECOBRASNAKE We knew The Cobrasnake was the real deal when he called us from Europe and said he had to shoot an all-night rager at a Bavarian castle, but would hop straight on an early morning flight and make it to Mexico before sunrise on our first day of shooting. Some might call that cutting it too close. We call it epic. The Cobrasnake did not disappoint. In terms of both nailing the shot and spreading the fun, he was venomously effective. Not that we ever had any doubts. In the past year alone, Mark has traveled to more than 75 cities in 15 countries, shooting parties and events. He’s also brought his keen eye to successful campaigns for Sony PlayStation, T-Mobile and Nike, among others. Here, in his own words, our mythical lensman explains why “you’re nobody until you’ve been shot by The Cobrasnake.” SURFING: HOW AND WHEN DID MARK HUNTER BECOME THE COBRASNAKE? Mark “Cobrasnake” Hunter: At my bar mitzvah. I came in as a boy, but I left as a man, holding a camera and pointing it at a girl in a bikini. I don’t remember why the girl in the bikini was at my bar mitzvah, but I got some amazing photos and the legend of the Cobrasnake began. WE HEAR YOU GOT YOUR START IN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHOOTING PARTY PHOTOS. TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY. My journey as a party photographer took me from sneaking into Hollywood indie rock clubs as a teenager to the VIP sections of the craziest parties all over the world and everywhere in between. I probably personally photographed at least 75 percent of all the fun that took place in the world between 2004 and 2014. BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE WILDEST PART Y YOU’VE DOCUMENTED.

PRODUCER: Kellie Cuttrell @surfingmag_swim

Kellie Cuttrell eats, sleeps and breathes swimsuits — in fact, we’ve been told she could swim before she could walk, and even took her very first steps while wearing a bikini. So while Kellie is officially the sales and marketing coordinator for SURFING Magazine, she also found time to forecast 2015’s hottest swim trends and then outfit seven beautiful models in ‘em at some of the most idyllic locations on earth. It’s not a stretch to say Kellie was, quite literally, born for this.

28

S U RF I N G M AGA Z INE

It was on a secret island off the coast of Miami. I don’t remember much, but there was an alligator wearing sunglasses and a swimming pool in the shape of a hot dog. Unfortunately there are no pictures because when I downloaded them every photo appeared as a pure white void. I talked to my tech guy about it and he said that the super-strong party vibes at this party were so strong that they changed the code in the digital files, like Neo did in the Matrix. HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR WAY TO FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY AND EVENTUALLY REACH ITS SUMMIT, SHOOTING THE SURFING MAG SWIMSUIT ISSUE? Fashion found me. I’ve always loved clothes and style and eventually I just couldn’t turn down the offers that I was getting from the biggest brands and hottest magazines in the world. Once I had a foothold on fashion mountain, I climbed my way straight to the top. When I got there I saw

you guys, riding a sick wave and partying with a bunch of bikini babes. IN ADDITION TO AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHY, WHAT ELSE DOES THE COBRASNAKE DO? When I’m not taking pictures I’m hiking with COBRA FITNESS CLUB and feeding the world’s insatiable hunger for fashion with my store, the Cobra Shop. ANY ADVICE IF WE SIGN UP FOR ONE OF YOUR FAMOUS FITNESS RUNS? Just keep putting one foot in front of the other until you look as sexy as you feel. WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF SWIMSUITS? Two words: even smaller. WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE COBRASNAKE? Spreading good vibes, drinking the finest juices and pushing it to the limit!

HAIR AND MAKEUP: Jeannie Jeffries @jjfreshy

STYLISTS: Mimi Cuttrell @mimicuttrell

Assisted by Star Dawn @star_dawn

Assisted by Maxe Roberts @maxeroberts

It’s hard to believe this is the seventh SURFING Swimsuit Issue for our good friend Jeannie (JJ Fresh). We are so grateful she has stuck with us all these years. When we gave her the dates for the 2015 shoot, Jeannie had knee surgery scheduled during the same time. Instead of telling us, she immediately postponed the surgery in order to go on the shoot. In addition to being dedicated, Jeannie’s also an amazingly talented makeup artist whose priority is to always please her clients. Her assistant and sidekick, Star, is also a much-loved member of the team, as dedicated and talented as her boss and always a pleasure to have on the shoots.

Mimi got her start as an assistant to major Hollywood stylist Jessica Paster by helping style several celebs for the red carpet, music videos and more. She has also styled photo shoots for many surf industry brands. Although she’s still new to the industry, Mimi has a great work ethic and eye for style and we were beyond pleased with her work on the shoot. Maxe, a stylist from Vancouver, Canada, joined us at the last minute and ended up being a huge help on the Mexico shoot assisting Mimi. When your workday starts at 3:30 a.m. and doesn’t end till 11:30 p.m., it’s nice to have an extra set of professional eyes and hands.

S W I M S U I T S F O R T H E M O D E R N - D AY G I D G E T FOR THE GIRL WHOSE VACATIONS ALWAYS SEEM TO FIND HER AT A TROPICAL SURF DESTINATION. Like the trailblazing women surfers of the ‘60s who gracefully claimed their spot in the lineup at places like Malibu, you’re equally at home out surfing with the boys or tanning on the beach with your girls. You need a swimsuit that allows you to turn heads, whether riding the waves or strutting confidently up the beach after a good session. Cute and tough, just like you.

SWIMSUITS FOR INDULGING FOR THE GIRL WHO’S SCHEDULED HERSELF A NO-SCHEDULE VACATION. You set aside today for total relaxation. You want to do nothing but lie by the pool and sip on some tropical drinks, maybe treat yourself to a full-body massage at the spa. Of course, even if you’re doing “nothing,” you’re still going to look good while doing it. You put on your favorite poolside swimsuit, some accessories and a little makeup, and instantly feel like Farrah Fawcett at the Beverly Hills Hotel circa ‘74. So sit back, relax and enjoy your downtime, maybe even turn off that phone of yours. A ‘70s golden goddess needs her “me time.”
