Architecture is the reaching out for the truth. – Louis Kahn Inspired by the ideas of the distinction between ‘program’ and ‘programming’, I start to realize that architecture is not static but an interactive process. Architecture activities are not only about construction but also about human awareness.

01 Daily Versus Special: Bazaar in the Hutong Renovation of Street Space Peking Traditional Area Individual Competition Group Work in Construction Phase / Partner: Bai Zhen Gong Menkou Baitasi Block Beijing, China 2017

After years of modernization, the protection and renovation of traditional architecture has been given great concern. Peking ,the capital of China is faced with the most severe arguments between various opinions. The site of this project is just located in a traditional residence block where has not been occupied by commercial building yet. A precious white Lamaist pagoda in an ancient temple there which has been existing for almost 1000 years . People living there are facing the contradictions between traditional form and modern life style , governments’ willing of renovation by moving them out and residents’ wishes of keep living there. Unlike common understanding, people living here are not rich although it’s in the centre of Beijing and the housing price is extremely high in that region. In fact, many households are ordinary people who got their house from their parents. They are experiencing harsh periods and showing various lifestyles. As a method to improve living quality, transforming spaces along the street to shops has been adopted in a large extent. However, it is also followed by a series of problems, such as crowding and environmental pollution. As a result, Hutong, the “Living room of city”, is disappearing gradually. In order to solve the mess, the government has been adopted a “Wall Closure” measures. Due to the conflict between demand of people and policy, chaotic street became a noisy construction site. How to solve these complex problems? How to redevelop the potential cultural value of Baitasi block? How to balance the relationships between tourists and residence?

2

Residents regard Hutong space as the city living room in a traditional way

This design aims to coordinate the relationship between the urban trend and the characteristics of the small block itself, and aims to meet the residents ' needs of "open wall hole" for shop to make a living.

In traditional culture, “Bazaar" and "Market" have a spatial hierarchy. By using the original connecting points between the residential and the street, west-east secondary roadway are implanted for shops, the "urban living room" function of the main street can be restored . A spatial sequence is builded. The new planting lane opens the line of sight and streamline from every where of this block to the white tower.

Considering the restore cultural value and commercial value in the future , as well as the possible contradiction between the residents and tourists. Use the logic above as a prototype, use the way of "Upper for Tourists, Lower for residents". The visitor and the residents' activities are not intersecting. Providing more activity space for visitors, avoiding the tourists' interference in the lives of residents, and providing another possibility for foreign visitors to enter the shop from another layer of space.

The original plan has become unreasonable because of illegal private building behaviour

5

Modified Plane

Houselet has been integrated into courtyard building. Put east-west by-lane between these buildings, shopping activities can be put in this area in order to release the main north-south "Hutong" for life activity.

Plaza

A circle plaza is designed in the junction of two main commercial streets .The circle form is from the Lamaist Pagoda. The plaza is in connection with the main roof corridor system. This is the point where residence and tourists can meet and communicate.

Territorial Claims Let space to lead residents use space in a reasonable way.

Public space Should be cleaned by governments. Private Field Should be managed and cleaned by themselves.

Life Scene Has Been Extracted and Redesigned

Public Roof Plarform This space is an utilize of an existing flattop. The building is a youth hostel. So this space is reconstracted into a public communition space.

New Way to Enter a Public Building Roof of public building are transformed into public platform and provide a new way for tourists to enter the building. Junction The junction of main Hutong and minor Hutong used to be used by inhabitants as communication sapce. But because of the lake of management, they are used inefficiently. Some residents even put rubbish there so the environments are bad. This place is divided into small spaces that can be more interesting and used more efficiently, especialy for children and senior citizens.

Parking Parking is one of the most important reason why the road space is extremely crowded. Vehicles , pedestrians, people who are resting and the exterior of shops are using road space in a chaotic way. A line is used here, spaces where the line is pushed outward can be spaces for people and where the line is pushed inward can be parking area.

2016

The site is located in an old industrial city that has to face great transition on their main economic sources. In 1960, in order to get enough oil for supporting of the whole country, Wang Jinxi had been sent by the chairman to Daqing area to explore oil field, by when there still have never been developed by people. Workers have been struggled with famine, chilliness for a long time until 21st century. Daqing has become extremely wealth nowadays. But because of long times’ struggling, the city is still in worried about lack of resources so you can see serious over production here which lead to severe ecosystem destruction especially soil pollution because of the discharge of industrial waste. The idea of ecological protection should be giving priority. The site is located near a railway along which some other factories are established as a system to send petroleum around the country. The city Daqing is originally developed from this factory. In this project , the function is a combination of technical exchange center and research center .The core status of this block has been reserved but transfer into a centre where send ecological protection technologies around the country. I try to use irony program to let the awareness of environmental protection being inspired by dramatic space.

03 The Wall Between Traditional and Modern City The Design of Shantang Museum Competition Work Group Work / Partner: Jia Feng Shantang Street, Suzhou Jiang Su, China 2014

Shantang is an ancient town which is located in the centre of the traditional city Suzhou. The exists of this city can be trace back to Tang Dynasty with 1200 years history. It is the most typical example of traditional ancient city which is most famous for it’s classical garden. But because of several decades of modernization, most of the traditional blocks are being destroyed, only this town has been preserved . The site is just located between the modern city and the ancient town which two are being separated by an old man made river. The place is now occupied by sellers without licenses. This project is trying to create a "wall" to set a dialogue between ancient city and modern city. Using a wall to separate them to stop the town being erosion by the surrounding commercial areas .The function of this project is a museum. But what’s special here is that we do not need exhibits. The town is actually an exhibit itself and we only need a space through which we can see this amazing part of the city from another in a special way and on which we can enjoy the spectacular view of the old town.

Scenes in Ancient City

Chinese classical garden design program is used in this project but going vertically. 1:Instead of go directly to the destination, winding path provides more chance to explore different views. 2

1

3 2:Except for the sceneries in the garden ,things like mountain and tower in the distance can also be used as the end of a space series like a background. 3,4,9:From a hole you can enjoy a particular part of the garden like watching a picture which is specially designed. Through the hole on the wall that is in the picture, you can see another drawing.

4

5

6

5,8:Wall is special in classical garden, they are not only used for enclosing space . 6:When you are in one pavilion, the other pavilion and people in it can be a scenery. You are other people’s sceneries too. 7:It seems the bridge has separate the space but the water continuous. Space is connected.

Different Programs Towards Two Area The ‘Wall’ is open to the ancient town . When people hanging around in the building they can see the town where ever they are. By contrast, in order to stop the ancient town being erosion and disturbed by modern vehicles and shopping mall, the wall only open holes to the modern part of the city. People can see what happened there just like a spectator.

04 48 HOURS Design of Emergency Shelter

Competition Work Group Work / Partner: Li Yifei

2017

Natural disasters kill thousands of people a year. Typically, the biggest killer isn’t the actual event itself, but the hours following the event. This project is designed to be an emergency shelter to protect people from calamity and aftermath of calamity. 48 hours post-disaster is a critical zone for the victims: a determining factor between survival or death. Different from other shelter design, this emergency life-support system can be used immediately when a natural disaster happened. It can be attached to window frames and become a shelter by simple operation . The program used in this project is “paper fold” by which there can be an alternation of this shelter from one dimension roll of paper to a two dimension surface and finally become a three dimensions’ space. Its shape can change flexibly according to different needs and change into different forms. After the disaster, it can be easily recycled.
