2013 Hilltoppers to Watch
Scott Wilcox - Jr., INF, 5-11, 182 Scott Wilcox started all 58 games in 2012, finishing third on the team with a .276 average, while leading WKU with 46 walks on the year. Wilcox was the true definition of a utility player for WKU in 2012, as he was the only Hilltopper to start all 58 games, while playing three of the four infield spots throughout the year as WKU battled injuries. His durability throughout the year earned him second team all-Sun Belt Conference honors as a utility man. Wilcox finished the 2012 season with a .410 on-base percentage – good for the second-best total on the team. The Burlington, Ontario native hit four home runs, driving in 28, while pounding out 60 hits on the year. He had the majority of his success against righthanded pitching, batting .303, while also hitting a team-best .357 with runners in scoring position, with eight two-out RBIs on the year. In his two years on the Hill, Wilcox has brought a patient approach to the Hilltopper lineup, drawing 64 walks over two years, while sporting a career .404 on-base percentage.
Taylor Haydel - Sr., RHP, 5-11, 185 Haydel became WKU’s shut-down reliever in his third season on the Hill, setting career highs in virtually every pitching category, including posting a team-best 2.35 ERA in 25 appearances out the Hilltopper bullpen. Haydel tossed 65.0 innings, trailing only WKU’s three regular starters in innings pitched. The junior lasted two or more innings in 17 of his 25 relief appearances, including six appearances of four or more innings. Haydel was notorious for the big strikeout in clutch situations, punching out 74 batters, while only walking 12 – good for over a 6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He struck out five or more eight different times on the year, and struck out at least one batter in 19 of his 25 appearances. Haydel tied for the team lead with four wins, with all four of the wins coming in relief appearances. As the season progressed, he did make two weekend starts, getting the nod against UL-Lafayette on Apr. 8, then again against Arkansas St. on Apr. 15, lasting five innings in his start against UL-Lafayette, allowing just one run on six hits. For his career, Haydel has put together an even 12-12 record on the mound, striking out 149 in three years on the Hill.
