Warrior Adventure Quest, or WAQ, is a Soldier Program developed to provide high adventure programs for Soldiers going through RESET. WAQ is a sustainable, enduring program that Army leaders recognize as a viable means to assist Soldiers with re-integration, and empower small-unit leaders. Soldiers maintain combat readiness and increase unit cohesion all to help with the transition into the “new normal” and decrease risky behavior. Mark Wicker, Community Recreation Division Chief for Family and MWR said “the goal for this program is to have commanders and NCO’s see the benefit and value that it brings to their Soldiers and encourage them to participate.”

The WAQ program began at Fort Knox in September 2009 as a pilot program and has really grown by leaps and bounds. According to Ryan Noble, WAQ Coordinator, “Since June we have had 100 Soldiers from the 233rd participate in the program. The 233rd participated in paintball, trap/skeet and white water rafting as part of their WAQ Program. “ These programs are high in adventure and designed to create that rush the Soldiers would receive down range by providing a teaching tool to funnel that energy to a safe and controlled environment. Adventurous activities are currently scheduled to include rock climbing, zip line, white water rafting, paintball, trap/skeet shooting, and mountain biking. Each warrior is allotted one eight-hour adventure activity per deployment scheduled within 90 days of the Soldier’s block leave. Those interested in participating or seeking additional information about the WAQ program should contact their unit command. There’s no better place to release energy than with Family and MWR in the WAQ program. For more information contact Ryan Noble at (502) 624-1413. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ$XJXVWŇ

The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) Program supports the overall quality of Single Soldiers’ lives. BOSS identifies real Soldier well-being issues and concerns by recommending improvements through the chain of command. BOSS encourages and assists Single Soldiers in identifying and planning for recreational and leisure activities. Additionally, it gives Single Soldiers the opportunity to participate in and contribute to their respective communities. BOSS is a demonstration of the chain of command’s commitment to Single Soldiers. The new incoming BOSS President, SPC Angela Skaggs, said “I love the BOSS program; it is a great way for me to meet people, and help Soldiers and community members. SPC Skaggs has been a member of BOSS for 2 years before taking the reigns as President. She has worked closely with the new command group in order to keep the BOSS program thriving for this installation.

SPC ANGELA SKAGGS

The Garrison Command Sergeant Major, Steven M. Voller, said that “BOSS is currently in a growing and improving stage, and feels the growing pains from the BRAC transformation. “We are going to focus on creating awareness for the new team of soldiers that are joining Fort Knox, so they too can become involved. “

The BOSS program stands for three basic components. These components are: Well-being, Recreation and Leisure, and Community Service. Well-being: The BOSS program is designed to support the overall well-being for single and unaccompanied Service Members. Well-being deals primarily with those things that can directly or indirectly influence the single Service Members morale, living environment, or personal growth and development. Some of the issues addressed by BOSS Councils include dining facilities, education, and fitness centers. Well-being issues identified or raised during BOSS meetings are directed to the appropriate command or staff agency for resolution and resolved at the lowest level. Recreation and Leisure: Recreation and leisure activities may be planned solely by the BOSS Council or in conjunction with other MWR activities. Service Members assume the primary role in planning BOSS events. Events planned by BOSS Councils should meet the needs and desires of single Service Members on the installations. BOSS Councils have sponsored events such as Car & Bike Show and BOSS trips. The BOSS program has several exciting programs that are on the books, for example; Cedar Point and Cave Country Canoe in August and the Annual Fort Campbell Softball Tournament. ŇOpportunity Knox

What is BOSS?

Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) is a dynamic Department of the Army program that single Soldiers can participate in to enhance their Quality of Life, contribute to their community through Community Service activities, and assist in the planning and execution of their own Recreation and Leisure events.

Community service: BOSS Councils often elect to participate in community programs or projects, which make a difference in the lives of others, and the community. BOSS members have volunteered to take part in the Soldier Show, and Summer Concert Series by partnering with I. AM .STRONG/ SHARP program, which is the Army’s campaign to combat sexual assaults by engaging all Soldiers in preventing sexual assaults before they occur. This component is voluntary in nature and must be in accordance with the installation volunteer program. “BOSS is an organization for career progression, individual growth and maturity. It allows soldiers to understand the workings of the army and the opportunities for involvement with the community in order to make a difference. I would encourage all you can to participate” said CSM Voller. Who can be a member of BOSS? If you are in one of the following categories, Single Soldier, Single Parent, Unaccompanied Soldier, or Geographically Single Soldier and are assigned as permanent party or are on temporary duty at Fort Knox, the BOSS Program is available for you! The BOSS Program is vital to overall mission accomplishment and serves as a unified voice for Single Soldiers. Find out more about your unit and installation program so BOSS can become one of your many tools for success. Meetings: Single Service Members are encouraged to voice their concerns to their unit BOSS representative who will in turn express the issues at the bi-weekly BOSS meetings. BOSS meetings are held the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the Month. For more information on the BOSS Program, contact BOSS President, SPC Skaggs (502) 624-2677.

At last, Eastman Park is finally complete and ready to bring on the summer entertainment! Fort Knox has yearned for the completion of this beautiful park since developers broke ground last year, and can finally join together to witness the memorialization and opening event on August 14, at 7:00 PM. The exquisite amphitheater features freshly cut, green grass for stadium style seating and overlooks the large stage where a series of mini concerts will be held each year beginning 2011. Families and friends can bring picnic blankets and snacks while taking pleasure in the outdoor entertainment. A creatively charming playground adjacent to the amphitheater also features a unique mini-rock wall, slides, swings and much more. It’s just the right dose of excitement and leisure for children of all ages to enjoy. Eastman Park is named after COL Mark Eastman, a native of Hardin County. COL Eastman was a 1981 North Hardin High School graduate and a 1986 graduate of the University of Louisville. During his life, COL Eastman spent 23 years proudly serving in the United States Army. As a research scientist, his contributions to innovative Army war fighter training included the development of an advanced tactical warfare simulation system and expansion of the Seventh Joint Multinational Training Command in Europe. He previously served as the Deputy Director of the Mounted Maneuver Battle Laboratory at Fort Knox, KY., and his most recent assignment was the Director of the Strategic Experiential Education Group at the U.S. Army War College. COL Eastman received several decorations and awards to include; the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and the Korean Defense Service Medal. COL Eastman is survived by his wife and three children. Operations Officer, Carole Leonard noted COL Eastman is very well-known and loved here at Fort Knox. “There’s a natural connection to the park and COL Eastman, not only because of his significant contributions to the Army community at large but also because of his background as a musician and trumpet player in high school and college,” said Leonard. “Naming the park after him is very suitable for this amphitheater.”
