DONNA KIRBY SCHOOL AGE CENTER On May 3, the new Fort Knox School Age Center will be memorialized in honor of Donna Jean Kirby, former Child Development Center (CDC) Director. From September 1972 through May 2002, Donna J. Kirby unselfishly served the Child Development Center and Child, Youth and School Services. Her tireless efforts resulted in an outstanding Child Care program that focused on enhanced educational and developmental opportunities addressing the unique needs of Fort Knox children. From pre-school teacher to Center Director, Ms. Kirby’s 30-year career was marked by her dedication and devotion to children. Through her shared knowledge, expertise and love of exploration in a child’s surroundings, she created nurturing learning environments where children were encouraged to spread their wings and prepare for their lives ahead. As CDC Director, she ensured accreditation with the National Association for the Education of Young Children was continually achieved and all standards upheld to the highest degree. Donna enjoyed music and often entertained audiences with her singing at special events on Fort Knox as well as in her church and the surrounding communities. She was a caring and thoughtful person who shared her hobbies and love of fishing, sewing, cooking, and gardening with her family and friends. During her many years of working at the CDC, she could often be found taking her personal time to plant flowers or pull weeds in the flower beds surrounding the Center. She truly enjoyed the beauty of the flower gardens and took great pride in the outside appearance of the CDC. Donna reached for the stars and was recognized by the highest levels of Army leadership for exceptional service. A spirit of laughter, helpfulness, and devotion to her job, touched everyone she met. Ms. Kirby’s motto, "best of the best" lives on in each Child, Youth and School Services program today. In November 2011, the new School Age Center went through re-accreditation with the Council on Accreditation and scored 100% which speaks to the high quality programming existing for school age children. The School Age Center is dedicated to Donna’s memory and serves as a reminder of her value to the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, the Fort Knox Community and most importantly, her value to the children who enter the new childcare facility on a daily basis. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ0D\Ň

FIND A LOYAL FRIEND Giving or receiving a new pet is a great way to brighten up the life of a friend or family member. Fort Knox has the perfect place to find that "forever friend". The Stray Animal Facility is open and looking to place these animals in good homes. Fort Knox Stray Animal Facility is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. The facility can house up to 15 dogs and has 3 cat rooms. "All animals that are brought into the stray facility are held up to 10 business days to allow owners to claim them, or for the on Post community to adopt," said SSG Michelle Benford, the NCOIC for the Vet Clinic. "After the 10 days, we open the animals to the general public. We want to find them homes as fast as possible." For those interested in adopting a pet, the pets from the Stray Animal Facility will receive their first round of shots, microchip, spaying or neutering, and a variety of tests to ensure a healthy animal. This is included in the $85.00 adoption fee for dogs and the $75.00 fee for cats. There are a few adult cats that have been in the facility for some time and they are current-

ly FREE to a good home. SSG Benford mentioned that the facility is seeking volunteers who might be interested in helping exercise the dogs and give them some social time. Every Friday, from 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM, volunteers can run with the dogs on the designated PT route on Eisenhower Avenue. The facility is located off Spearhead Division Road, Building 1068. For more information, contact the Stray Animal Facility at (502) 624-6429. In addition to the Stray Animal Facility, Fort Knox has a newly renovated location for the Veterinary Clinic. It is located next door to the Stray Animal Facility on 192 Tank BN Road, Building 1006. The Veterinary Clinic is professionally staffed by Army Veterinary Corps personnel. The clinic offers many types of routine care services for pets of the Military Family. You can call for an appointment at (502) 624-3271, and hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Stop in and pay a visit to the Stray Animal Facility and leave with a new addition to your family!
