Alberto Ibargüen is President and CEO
of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Previously, he was Publisher of the Miami Herald and of El Nuevo Herald. During his tenure, the Miami Herald won three Pulitzer Prizes and El Nuevo Herald won Spain’s Ortega y Gasset Prize for excellence in journalism. Earlier, he was an executive at Newsday and at the Hartford Courant, and practiced law in Hartford, Connecticut. Ibargüen is Chairman of the Board of the Newseum and of the World Wide Web Foundation. He serves on the boards of PepsiCo, American Airlines, ProPublica, and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a former board chair of PBS. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and served in the Peace Corps in Venezuela and in Colombia. For his work to protect journalists in Latin America, he received a Maria Moors Cabot citation from Columbia University and an honorary doctorate from George Washington University.
