Not your average Bake Sale On July 28th Heather DeMers (age 16, BVT Culinary Arts Student), Kayleigh Kearnan (age 16, Nipmuc Student), Annie DuBois (age 15, Uxbridge Student) and Annie’s cousin Lexi Healy (15 from Oregon) ran their 7th annual bake sale for Boston Children’s Hospital. Seven summers ago the girls were bored and decided to hold an impromptu bake sale/lemonade stand to raise money for charity. After making several batches of cookies and cupcakes and mixing up a few gallons of lemonade, they set up their stand in front of the house. They had their brothers ride around the neighborhood with signs attached to their bikes announcing the location of the bake sale. After a few hours of selling to the neighbors, the girls made $53 to donate to Children’s Hospital Boston. They had so much fun that they immediately started planning another sale for the next summer. The annual bake sale has grown each year with the girls’ planning phase now starting months out instead of days. They bake for days instead of hours and continued on page 15

With the opening of the new high school on Quaker Highway in Uxbridge and facing the reconfiguration of the Taft, Whitin, and McCloskey schools, new Superintendent Kevin Carney is looking forward to interacting with students, teachers and staff and settling into his new community. He has set an ambitious agenda for himself in his Superintendent Entry Plan in which he states: “Over the next several months, my efforts will be focused on learning as much as possible about our district and the needs kevin of our constituents. These efforts will entail gathering information from a wide range of educators and community members to learn both where the district has been and where it wants to be.” At the outset of the interview, Superintendent Carney said he wants to “learn” as much as he can and “listen” to the concerns and expectations of all with whom he interacts. “I want to blend and mesh with the community of Uxbridge.” The personable, interactive Superintendent was proud to be at the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new high school on Monday, August 20th, with many generations of townspeople on hand to see the flagship of the community for the first time. “As much as today signifies the opportunities for the future, today is also about closure for so many of you, “ Carney said. “We will have many opportunities to celebrate and make new memories in this high school, but today is really about

celebrating your journey to make this Ribbon Cutting Ceremony possible. You did it and we are so thankful for your efforts over the past 13 years. We promise to make you proud.” His commitment to his new job is evident. He spoke from the heart and said that for the community to invest in the education programs within the district, they will need to see the outcomes of their investment. “I do believe that we have a responsibility to stay connected with our alumni. If our primary goal as educators is to prepare children for independent, successful citizenship, then we better track their successes after graduaCarney tion day. The best accolade that we will ever receive in Uxbridge is the return of alumni to raise their families here and to educate their children here. This goal is a major motivator for me.” To that end, he wants anyone from the public to meet with him or come to open forums, like the “Refreshments with the Superintendent” he held over the past month at the Taft Early Learning Center. He will continue to host open forum meetings with the public throughout the course of the year. “I want the residents in Uxbridge to know that I want to learn about the values here and that I care.” “During this “entry” year, I need to identify the commonalities that community members and key stakeholders identify as pertinent information about the schools and how the schools function within the community.
