Fireworks bring back the bang in Uxbridge The Uxbridge 4th of July Celebration Committee and Premeer Real Estate are excited to announce the return of fireworks to Uxbridge. Hollywood: Blockbuster Edition is bringing the show onto the field this year! The event will be held on Saturday, July 7th at the McCloskey Middle School Field from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

(Rain date July 8th). Fireworks will begin at 9:00 p.m. Bring a chair or a blanket and plan for an evening of fun, entertainment, food and fireworks. The VFW POST 1385 is proud to host the 15th annual "Thunder in the Valley" on July 14th (A memorial ride and chicken barbeque honoring the life of Officer Chet Dzivasen.) Officer Dzivasen was a dedicated officer on the Uxbridge Police Dept. and a resident of the town of Douglas. Chet passed away while coaching his son's little league game at the age of 35.

A memorial scholarship was established in 2003 to honor Officer Dzivasen. Due to the overwhelming success of this event the scholarship has been funded for many years to come. It was then determined in 2007 to find a local non-profit charity to help, after much consideration the "Adam Bullen Memorial Foundation" was selected.

The Adam Bullen Memorial Foundation is based in Oxford. This organization is dedicated to helping patients and their

families dealing with cancer. They provide both emotional and financial support to local children and adults through the many stages of this life threatening disease. Residents throughout the Blackstone Valley have been helped by this great organization. All of your donations will go directly to this cause.

Over $165,000 has been raised and donated due to the overwhelming success of this event over the past 14 years.

Opinion Editorial: Sign me up for the Libertarian Party always loved politics and for many years I considered myself a Republican, however, over the last year and a half the Republican party has been distant from it’s core values. I ask you what ever happened to the Party of Reagan, Eisenhower or Coolidge.

Truthfully, I don’t know. I’m sure many Republicans and Democrats feel the same way as I do. Upon my research, I found there is a political party that the majority of Americans identify as and they don’t even know it. This party is the Libertarian Party.

The main philosophy of being Libertarian is simple, freedom. We as Libertarians believe if what you’re doing can’t hurt anyone, it’s your God given right to do it. We believe in a small fed-

During elections in the United States, we are often plagued with two choices, Republican or Democrat. I often ponder, how did our nation become so divided? The Republican Party of today, is not the party of Lincoln and the Democratic party of today is not the party of Kennedy. Both parties, have left the values of being American.

While there are still good politicians on both sides who value country over party like Mark Warner, John McCain, Susan Collins, and John Kasich, most politicians only look out for their special interest groups. This is wrong! This isn’t what America was founded on, and like many Americans, I’m fed up!

eral government that is fiscally conservative while socially, we’re more liberal or independent. I’ll give you an example of how our current government is wasting our tax money. A grant of $700,000 was given to study autism.

However, instead of the money being used to study autism your government decided to spend the $700,000 to study Neil Armstrong's statement when he landed on the moon. Did he say “One small step for man,” or “One small step for a man”? Your government spent $700, 000 studying the preposition “a” instead of studying autism. To add insult to injury the federal government never came to a conclusion. Libertarians, like myself, hate taxes because there is much waste in their spending.

Instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money in taxes, Libertarians want a federal flat tax, so everything is flat and fair. Libertarians are for balancing budgets. Every minute our national debt goes up by $1 million! We want to balance the budget, debt, and the deficit by cutting government spending. Many Libertarians are in favor of abolishing many government agencies, such as, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) , Department of Education and privatizing Social Security. We absolutely want to privatize as much of the government as we can.

When it comes to social issues we’re more lenient. We are strong advocates of freedom of speech, we believe that you should be able to criticize your

leaders. We support stem cell research and we feel marijuana should be legal and run it like a business.

Republicans and Democrats both vote for wars, Libertarians don’t. We feel we should stop sticking our nose in other countries business. Most of the time when we topple regimes an even worse group takes over. A perfect example was Saddam Hussein. He’s now dead because of the U.S. and ISIS is now in control of the region. Don’t get me wrong, if the country is attacked we should go to war, but when the U.S. starts poking it’s face through the curtains of another country for no reason, then we have a problem.

Many people reading this are probably Libertarian and don’t even know it.

All you have to do is believe in a small transparent government that allows people to make decisions. Allow people to keep the majority of the money they make and the money the government takes, it goes towards necessary spending. When you can privatize something, you should. As a future politician, I really do hope that the Libertarian party can one day be as prominent as the Republican and Democratic parties. I want to make that change, not for myself, but for America.

Library to launch Long Range Plan Committee Tick Safety Workshop “It’s such an amazing time to explore the potential roles of a public library”, commented Deb Hinkle, Director of the Uxbridge Free Public Library. “Technology is changing the focus of all of our institutions, and this is a perfect opportunity to examine the ways in which our library can take advantage of those changes to better serve our town in the future.”

The Uxbridge Library is seeking interested members of the community to be part of a comprehensive Long Range Plan Committee. A formal written plan, to be presented to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners by October 1, 2019, will articulate the mission, objectives, goals and actions that will guide the Uxbridge library program for the next five years.

Committee members will be involved in helping with all phases of the effort, from coordinating a community-wide survey to drafting the final recommendations.

“Over the next year we anticipate about four or five meetings in which all of the library’s stakeholders, as members of the Long Range Plan Committee, can come together to create an expanded vision for our 21st century library”, said Barbara Hall, a member of the Uxbridge Library Board of Trustees. “It is our hope that we can

open to local communities Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise and in an effort to educate area residents who enjoy outdoor recreation about the risks and tips for prevention, Blackstone Heritage Corridor, Inc. (BHC) is hosting a Tick Safety workshop on Wednesday, July 11th at 6:30 p.m. at its office at 670 Linwood Ave., in Whitinsville. The workshop is number 13 in its Volunteer Skills Workshop series and the public is also invited to attend.

Through its Bikeway Ambassadors, Trail Ambassadors and Blackstone Valley Paddle Club, BHC has many volunteers leading outdoor programs, not including other special events like “Birding the Blackstone” where a group of 23 people were recently paddling on the Blackstone River and a program leader later discovered a tick on her.

“It’s important that we all become aware of ticks and learn ways to protect ourselves and others attending our programs,” explained Suzanne Buchanan, BHC’s Volunteer Coordinator. “Learning what to look for, how to dress, how to properly check for ticks and their proper removal are all key measures to help prevent a tick-borne illness.”

BHC has invited Terri Michaelson and Susan Bartlett of New England Tick Safety to give the free workshop.

attended a couple of BHC’s cleanup events in Upton and Uxbridge to provide safety tips and tick checks to the volunteers who were out removing litter from area parks and streets.

“We have found that more than half of Lyme patients never saw a tick on them,” Michaelson shared. “That is frightening to me. So, if we can get people to dress property and do tick checks, perhaps the number of people seeing ticks on them will make a difference, even if to just save one person from this sneaky illness.”

Daniels Farmstead offers Farmers Markets & Guided Tours Why are there two huge cast iron kettles built into a stone shelf inside the front entryway? Why is there an outbuilding raised up on stilts? Why did they keep two stoves—and so many other antique items accumulated by generations of farming families? The curiosity of visitors is satisfied each time a tour is given at the historic

Daniels Farmstead at 286 Mendon Street in Blackstone. Through the landscape, buildings and objects tended by ten generations of farming families, this remarkable historic site teaches visitors about farming life from the 18th century until today. Visitors also enjoy a modern-day harvest, with a variety of vegetables, flowers and herbs

grown at the farm and offered with several other produce and craft vendors at a Farmers Market in the historic farmyard.

Open House to explore Quaker History Join docents Richard and Suzanne Frechette at the Uxbridge Quaker Meetinghouse for a fascinating look at the history of the Quaker community that once thrived in Uxbridge. The original doors of the historic meetinghouse will be open to visitors from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, July 8th. The meetinghouse, dedicated in 1770, stands at the corner of Quaker Highway and Aldrich Streets in South Uxbridge.

Explore the Quaker beliefs and customs that are reflected in the floor plan of the meetinghouse, from the duel entrances that flank the vestibule to the panels that can be lowered to divide the main space. Follow the history of the community from its beginnings before the American Revolution through its decline in the early 20th century.

The Quaker Meeting House Association was formed in the 1950s to preserve the treasure that is the historic 1770 meetinghouse and to share its history with the community. Justine Brewer, a descendant of the Daniels family and part of the tenth generation to carry on family tradition, is a founding member of the Daniels Farmstead Foundation which has been working to preserve the property and share it with the community. Its most recent efforts are centered around the remarkably intact apple cider mill.

About the tours and Farmers Markets, she said, “I think that my Aunt Dot and Uncle Charlie cared so much about this place and about their family that it is perfect to tell their stories to other visiting families, and to let everyone enjoy the fresh produce grown right here.”

Mrs. Brewer described how the family that lived in the house until 1998 enjoyed entertaining with music, had a special understanding of nature, and an active interest in culture and the community. The special events now offered by the Daniels Farmstead Foundation reflect these interests. During the Farmers Market on every Sunday, July 8th through October 7th are healthy recipes using organic vegetables available as handouts, fresh food from the grill, and special musical selections from area artists.

Inside the charming white clapboards of the farmstead, visitors are guided through twelve rooms on the first floor, from the rustic back entryway to the fancy formal parlor. Two pantries, one

used as a buttery, and the first indoor plumbing in Blackstone are highlights. Generations of family furniture, artwork, interior architecture, and everyday household objects represent more than two centuries of farming life. Though the site has been a farm since 1685, the oldest part of the farmstead dates to as early as 1760, while the main part of the building was added in the Greek Revival style between 1798 and 1820. Six outbuildings complete the property, which is surrounded by 60 acres of fields and forests.

Each Sunday afternoon at the Daniels Farmstead is an opportunity for a satisfying visit to this beautiful and rural spot within easy reach of residents of the Blackstone Valley. Not only can people tour the house and grounds in about half an hour, they can also fill up their pantries with fresh produce and freshly-baked goodies from Doris’ Kitchen. Visitors can plan to stay for the afternoon with a picnic lunch fresh from the grill and cold soft drinks kept on ice. All of these activities are free of charge for Daniels Farmstead members and donations are gratefully accepted.

COLORS OF THE CHASM: Making art in a natural setting is a great way to relieve stress and reconnect with your community. Join them for a relaxing and informal artistic event designed for adults, though all visitors to the park are welcome to attend. Each participant receives a free coloring book featuring Purgatory Chasm’s unique landscape. The park interpreter will give background for each image, and will be available for questions and conversation. Saturday, July 14th & 28th, 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Uxbridge High School earns Innovation Pathway Distinction The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recently announced that Uxbridge High School was one of the first schools in the Commonwealth to be named as an Innovation Pathway School, capping a nearly year-long application process for a project that is at the heart of the Baker-Polito Administration’s economic and education policies.Launched last year, Innovation Pathways are designed to create strong partnerships with employers in order to expose students to career options and help them develop knowledge and skills related to their chosen field of study before they graduate high school. For Uxbridge High School and its partner, the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Engineering/Advanced Manufacturing Pathway will enable students to complete a three or four-course sequence in engineering and have access to collegelevel courses while still in high school, with families and students alike supported by a comprehensive guidance

model.“Innovation pathways are designed to provide students with opportunities and direction so they can pursue careers in high-demand industries in the Commonwealth,” Governor Charlie Baker said.“We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure our students are ready to succeed in the 21st Century economy, and these new career pathways are another way our administration is working to support students with a quality education that prepares them for success in high school and after graduation.”

“We are proud of the work that we have done at Uxbridge High School to design a program that enables all of our students to achieve, Over the past two years, we have redesigned our guidance program, enhanced the engineering curricula, and helped build partnerships in the community that will be sustained in the Blackstone Valley and ensure that students have many choices following their time with us at UHS.” said UHS Principal Michael Rubin. High School currently offers three courses in its engineering/manufacturing program, with plans to add, potentially, a fourth course in the coming two years. Additionally, the school’s partnership with the Black-stone Valley Chamber of Commerce will enable students to take the academic skills learned in school and put them to immediate use, either through a Capstone/Senior project or Internship.

Part of the high school’s program that was considered particularly exceptional was its comprehensive guidance model, the implementation of which has been led by its two second-year guidance counselors, Christopher Barry and Amber Hampton, while the engineering courses have been championed by Michael Smutok and Daniel Sabourin, both technology education and engineering instructors at UHS.“Students involved in Innovation Pathways programs will study a carefully integrated series of courses and have work experiences relevant to their industry sector,” Lt. Governor Karyn Polito said. “These new pathways will expose more students to STEM-related fields and drive more young people to be interested in careers that are growing rapidly in Massachusetts.”

“Innovation Pathways provides students in comprehensive high schools with career-oriented education that is too rarely available outside of vocational programs,” Education Secretary, James Peyser said.“These new pathways don’t train students for specific occupations, but they prepare them for a variety of educational and career opportunities in a broad industry or sector.”“Deepening the work that we are already doing to prepare students for success after high school is a key prior-

ity,” Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, Jeffrey C. Riley said.“Innovation Pathways connect what is happening in the classroom with the real world, showing students firsthand what is possible for them after they leave our K-12 system. Plus, our commitment to equity ensures that all students will be able to access these new opportunities.” “The goal is to keep our students competitive, to help our economic partners build and sustain a workforce, and to give parents some comfort that their students will have choices leaving high school, whether it is to be gainfully employed, further their education, or both,” Rubin said. “Our counselors work hard to have students understand quite a bit about who they are, so that course selection and post-high school planning happens strategically, deliberately, and purposefully -and is ongoing, through each year a student is with us. ”These Pathways are a highlight of the BakerPolito Administration and its Workforce Skills cabinet, which partners the Secretaries of Education, Labor, and Housing/Economic Development. As legislators grapple with the next wave of education reform, additional partnerships with higher education institutions and maintaining connections with the needs of the workforces in the different regions of the state will be critical and strategic.

“We firmly believe that educational programming sits at the base of communities where economic development is strong and successful,” said Ux-

bridge Superintendent of Schools, Kevin Carney. “It only makes sense to build academic pathways that are aligned to industry demands and which target skills that will enhance workforce sustainability and individual success. There is real buzz about this across the state, and it is exciting for UHS and the Chamber to be in the front of this movement.”UHS has plans to expand its pathways beyond Engineering in the coming years, with expansion to biomedical science and information science/digital media possible, given the infrastructure of the building. Additionally, Mr. Rubin and Ms. Hebert’s collaboration with businesses through the development of the Blackstone Valley Ed Hub, which merges education and training with the businesses, will be central to the expansion of higher education opportunities within the region.

Executing our vision is quite the other and you need to have the right people in the right places if your goals are to reach successful outcomes.” The Superintendent acknowledged the years of planning, restructuring, and relationship building it has taken the Uxbridge Public Schools to reach this level of distinction with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Educa-tion.

“I cannot overstate my pride in what Principal Rubin and his educators have been able to accomplish over the past few years. They are on a mission, and they are right on the mark. They are bringing transformative change to what high schools are going to look like in the near future, and it will certainly have a positive, trickle down effect in our own district and beyond.”The Blackstone Valley Ed Hub, which is supported by Skills Capital Grant funding through the state, has enabled UHS, as a school campus partner, to procure additional equipment that supports its engineering program, including a 3D printer, a laser

cutter, and a CNC router. In time, the plan will be for students leaving the engineering program at UHS to be ready and able to take the skills learned through the Innovation Pathway and be well suited for the college and employer-based training being offered at the Hub, all of which will support students in their post-secondary planning “a true cycle of collaboration,” according to Rubin. “We have a unique opportunity to revolutionize opportunities for the region,” Hebert said. “I am excited about what this means for our community,” Rubin stated. “For us to be on the map and being seen as a model for what is possible when we break down walls of competition and start collaborating is really an honor and tremendous responsibili-ty.”Schools that applied for designation for an Innovation Pathways were required to follow five design principles: Equitable access for all students.

Guided academic pathway, which, in the case of Innovation Pathways, must relate to one of five specified broad industry sector. Through enhanced student supports, relevant connections to career, deep partnerships between high schools and employers or workforce development boards.

UEF awards 2018 scholarships The Uxbridge Education Foundation (UEF) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Uxbridge High School scholarships. The UEF is a nonprofit organization whose sole purpose has been to raise monies to fund innovative curriculum and programs in the public schools. The UEF was established in 2005 by a group of concerned Uxbridge citizens looking to improve the education of the students in their public schools.

On Wednesday, May 30th, the Uxbridge Education Foundation (UEF) presented four scholarships at the Academic Award Night held at the high school. The scholarships were presented to the following very deserving high school seniors: The Dr. Walter Mc Closkey Scholarship was presented to Marissa Allegrezza; the recipient of the Daniel J. Stefanilo Memorial Scholarship was Scott Kaeller, and two scholarships were awarded in the Memory of Ronald C. Paszkewicz to Cassandra Lobe and Chloe Gardner.

Dan Stefanilo was a superintendent of schools who was instrumental in estab-

lishing the foundation and worked each year to support the efforts of the group.

Ronald was a beloved area musician and was affectionately known as "Pesky." Ron's sweet sound of the tenor sax led many bands, including; Velveteens, Velve-tones, Songbirds, Sky King and many more. In May of 2015 he was inducted into the WMRC Local Music Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class. Ronald had worked with the Black-stone Millville Regional School Dist-rict, St. Mary's Catholic High School in Milford and the Franklin School of Preforming Arts as a Music Educator for a number of years before retiring. After retiring from education, Ron was able to generously donate merchandise from his business to various youth, church, nonprofit & education causes.

Mr. Paszkewicz, of Uxbridge passed away in February of 2017. The scholarship in Ron’s memory was established through the generosity of his

brother, Charles V. Paszkewicz, Jr. of Uxbridge and fellow musicians and friends. The scholarship continues to be funded through the Annual Night Before Thanksgiving Party that Ron had hosted for several decades. The event was held in November 2017 and attended by over 250 musicians and friends, selflessly donating their time and talent to perform that evening in memory of Ron. All funds raised that evening were donated to the UEF Scholarship. The event was spearheaded by Mark Emerick and Noel Levesque.

The UEF is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization established by a group of concerned Uxbridge citizens looking to enrich the education of the students in our public schools. Proceeds allow the UEF the opportunity to provide grant funding and scholarships to the Uxbridge public schools and its students. Since its inception in 2005, the UEF has awarded more than $100,000

Wonderful Summer Events offered by National Park Service NIGHT SKY PROGRAMS Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park is delighted to bring back their Night Sky Programs for a second year. In collaboration with the Civil Air Patrol, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and their wonderful volunteers they will offer nighttime astronomy programs at Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park, 287 Oak Street, in Uxbridge. Programs will be held on Fridays July 27th at 8:30 p.m., August 17th at 8:00 p.m., September 21st at 6:30 p.m., and October 5th at 7:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. In case of inclement

weather or poor viewing conditions, an indoor program on the cosmos will be offered.

Park Ranger Josh Bell, who is coordinating these events, explains, “In addition to a nationally significant history, the Blackstone River Valley is home to several important sites that allow for spectacular stargazing. We are fortunate to have a great core of volunteer astronomers who can bring the mysteries of the cosmos to our audience.”

RANGER WALKABOUTS Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park will once again be offering their Thursday Night Walk-

abouts this summer. The Walkabouts are free public programs, offered on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. from July through August. Each week, you

will have a chance to explore a new community, or head down an unknown trail and discover some of the people and places that make the Blackstone Valley such a fascinating place.

August 18th: magnets: come explore the world of magnetism! Make things stay, make things go and find out whether or not nickels have any nickel in them. August 25th: science blowout: come close out the summer season with an extravaganza of all the fan-favorite science events of the summer! Perry volunteer Scholarship Two scholarships were recently awarded at Milford Regional Medical Center to members of the Class of 2018. The Perry Volunteer Scholarship and the Milford Regional Auxiliary Scholarship are awarded annually to local students.

Photos needed for Calendar Contest

Being the Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, there are poignant traces of history left behind, including the impact transportation had within the boundaries of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. From the historic Blackstone River Canal to the many rail lines which eventually put the canal out of business, from old trolley lines to cobblestone streets, these artifacts make great subject matter for photographers and will serve as the theme for Blackstone Heritage Corridor’s 2019 calendar photo contest.

“But, don’t forget what transportation in the Blackstone River Valley is today,” noted Devon Kurtz, BHC’s Acting Executive Director. “From airplanes flying overhead to everyone on the bikeway. What about kayaks paddling down the river or the image of a well-worn pair of hiking boots?

Celebrate our travels through the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor.”

BHC’s annual calendar photo contest receives hundreds of entries, but only thirteen images will be selected for the 2019 calendar to illustrate the cover and each of the twelve months.

Submitted images not selected for the calendar are used throughout the year for BHC’s various promotional materials, including its website, annual report, rack cards and much more.

To be considered for the 2019 Calendar Contest, photos must focus on transportation and must be original digital photography. Photos must be submitted in high resolution (300 dpi minimum), horizontal JPG format, 10 inches wide and 8 inches high. No black and white or altered images, please.

Inspirational Women of the Blackstone Valley Uxbridge Girl Scout Troop 11900 earned their Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can receive, on May 10th with a ceremony honoring inspirational women of the Blackstone Valley. The troop of thirteen chose to earn their award by putting a spotlight on women they see making a big difference in their towns and communities.

Each Girl Scout had to choose a woman she finds inspiring and had to deliver a speech explaining why she chose her.

Honorees included school teachers, local business owners, volunteers and a librarian, to name a few. The ceremony was filled with the wonderful accomplishments and compelling stories of these incredible women. It was a rous-

ing and moving night for all who were in attendance.

Phone: (508)-278-8622 It is with great sadness that the Uxbridge Elderly Connection acknowledges the passing of its President of many years, Peter DiBattista. Peter was dedicated to the welfare of Uxbridge seniors, always mindful of their needs and concerns. He worked tirelessly to raise funds to supplement the budget, to provide improvements to the facility, support social and educational events, provide vehicles for transportation and medical visits and more. His family has lost a wonderful husband and father and the community has lost a great leader and friend.

With the new changes at the RMV, those who want a Real ID will have to go to the registry. They can assist you as far as getting ready online, but you will still have to go in person to complete the transaction. If you are getting a standard ID or driver’s license, they can help you do this online, unless your photo or vision test need to be updated. All persons will need to now bring in their birth certificate or a valid US Passport. Meet Pat Malone, Candidate for MA State Representative 8th Worcester District Written by Laura Olson Summer is upon us and so is the growing excitement for our local midterm elections! Our feature candidate, Pat Malone, is quickly becoming a household name in the Blackstone Valley. He is running for MA State Representative in the 8th Worcester District, which represents Bellingham, Blackstone, Millville, and Uxbridge.

He is also to be considered one of the youngest candidates to ever campaign for a representative seat in the nation.

As a nearly lifelong resident of Uxbridge, Pat has always had a passion for politics. He is a local Uxbridge High School graduate and recently earned a Political Science B.A. degree with Honors from UMass Amherst. He

Mccall named to B.U. Dean’s List

Alexander C. Mccall, a resident of Uxbridge, has recently been named to the Dean's List at Boston University for the Spring semester. Each school and college at Boston University has their own criterion for the Dean's List, but students generally must attain a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), or be in the top 30 percent of their class, as well as a full course load as a full time student.

He has also dedicated time to being a naval policy research assistant.

When he is not on the campaign trail, Malone enjoys working for Foxworthy Floors, a hardwood floor refinishing and installation company, based in

Uxbridge. He finds value working with his hands and learning the ropes of the business. The slow, methodical, detailoriented work gives him a sense of accomplishing something concrete at the end of the day. The work provides experience and also an understanding of the needs and challenges of a local business owner. In his spare time, he is a gifted musician as a guitarist, pianist, melodica player, and composer.

Pat has already taken a keen focus on protecting our water resources, fighting the opioid epidemic, increase state education funding, and securing investment for infrastructure development.

In the coming weeks and months, you will hear from him about his plans to tackle these important issues facing our

Beginning Bridges offers fun & educational events for local families

Beginning Bridges CFCE supports parents as their children’s first, best and most important teachers in the communities of Mendon, Upton, Northbridge and Uxbridge. They are a non-profit, family support organization that provides free comprehensive services.

Their programs include weekly playgroups, music and movement activities and early literacy skills story hours.

They also sponsor parent education programs, offer the Ages & Stages Developmental Questionnaire and can connect families to resources. Their goal is to support parents as they guide their children to reach their optimum potential. They have many community partners who share the same goal of strengthening communities. Funding for the Coordinated Family & Community Engagement Grant (CFCE) is provided by the Massachusetts Dept. of Early Education and Care (EEC) and sponsored by South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC).

Rosanne has enjoyed membership and exhibited in several art organizations including Cape Cod Art Association, Creative Arts Center, Yarmouth Art Guild, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, BlackstoneValley Art Association, and is a charter member of the Northside Artists of Cape Cod, a group of award winning artists.

Robert Znob Snay, 83

Robert Znob Snay passed away peacefully on March 25th after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Nancy, three children: Debra Forsberg of Littleton, Ann Marie Racicot of Rockdale, and William Snay of Linwood and his half-sister Betty Ann of Uxbridge. His sisters, Stella Farland and Betty Legere, predeceased him. In addition, Robert had five grandchildren, whom he cherished.

Robert was born on January 6th, 1935. He worked as a “soda jerk” at Lynch’s Pharmacy in his early years and later at Cuffer Brothers before moving into his long career at Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard.

Bob was a quiet man except when it came to his music, which he would play loudly and proudly for all to hear. He also enjoyed fishing, cookouts with the family, horseshoes, trips to the casino, and especially talking electronics with anyone who would listen. He was also an avid Bruins fan. On game nights, he could be found in his favorite chair in front of the TV with the family dog at his side.

Area Church hosts Piano Concert

The United Presbyterian Church of Whitinsville invites the community to an afternoon piano concert, under the direction of Music Director Chris Bilodeau, on July 8th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by a reception, to inaugurate the new grand piano, built locally by the Briggs Co. of Boston.

The concert, which will take place in the historic sanctuary, will feature guest pianist Matthew Guerrieri along with the UPC choir and other guest musicians. A mix of sacred and secular, contemporary and classical music will be performed, by solo piano, piano and mixed instruments, and piano accompanied by the choir and vocal soloists.

Works by Bach, Bud Powell, Abbey Lincoln, Scott Joplin, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others will be featured.

Admission is free, although free-will donations will be accepted and appreciated.

American History Contest Winner The Captain Job Knapp Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winner of the 2018 DAR American History Contest for the 8th grade at the Douglas Middle School. The Mendon Lions Club will sponsor The Zerbini Family Circus for two shows on Monday, July 9th. Travaline named to the Dean's List Devin C. Travaline, son of John and Kate Travaline of Uxbridge, has been named to the Dean’s List at Springfield College in Springfield, MA for the Spring 2018 Semester.

Apple Tree Arts honored with an Action Hero Award

Apple Tree Arts recently received an Action Hero Award from the Worcester Community Action Council, Inc. (WCAC) for providing early childhood music programs for 15 years to the organization’s Head Start classrooms.

Apple Tree Arts’ education director Jan Barlow and early childhood educator Bill Roy accepted the award on behalf of the nonprofit community school of the arts at WCAC’s 12th annual Action Hero Awards ceremony at Mechanics Hall. Mr. Roy teaches early childhood music programs in Head Start classrooms. “At Apple Tree Arts, we understand how precious the early childhood years are for brain development and how impactful music can be to the growth of many skills,” said Jan Barlow. “The children in the Head Start program hold a special place on our hearts. We believe early childhood education needs to touch everyone’s lives,” she explained.

WIS joins ST Math Program

Mass STEM Hub and MIND Research Institute Partnership will provide visual instructional math program. Whitin Intermediate School has been selected to join the ST Math Massachusetts Program. The program was developed by Mass STEM Hub, the One8 Foundation and MIND Research Institute, and will enable 54 schools to launch their use of ST Math over the next three years. ST Math is a visual instructional program that builds a deep conceptual understanding of math through rigorous learning and creative problem solving to engage, motivate and challenge PreK-8 students toward higher achievement. In a comparison of Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) results from the 2013/14 and 2016/17 school years, ST Math schools that implemented with high fidelity outgrew their counterparts in statewide math performance rank by 7.4 percentile points. “We’re excited to be able to offer our students a STEM-based math program with proven results to supplement and enhance our math curriculum.

ST Math helps students to build powerful problem solving skills,” said Dr. Rich Drolet, Uxbridge Director of Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, and Accountability. “Math Coordinator Bernadette Bazzett was instrumental in working to bring this grant to Uxbridge.

She understands that building a conceptual understanding of math in these formative years will give students the best chance at future success,” said Drolet.

Whitin Intermediate School submitted to a competitive and rigorous multistep application process. As a program member, the school will not only have access to ST Math, but to additional support and features including: • School grants to support adoption.

N.H.S. students travel to China with Superintendent

During April vacation, 15 Northbridge High School students traveled to China with Superintendent Dr. Catherine Stickney, school nurse Lori Johnson and students from Tahanto High School. They visited many cultural sights in and near Beijing and Shanghai including TianAnMen Square, the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, the Great Wall of China, Temple of Heaven Park, The Bund, Yu Garden, Shanghai World Financial Center, Nanjing Road and the Jade Buddha Tample. In addition, they enjoyed spectacular views of Shanghai’s nighttime skyline on a HuangPu river cruise. Students also engaged with a calligraphy lesson. A teacher taught them how to write ‘happiness’ in Chinese. They attended two TaiChi lessons, one was at the end of the Forbidden City and the other was at the school they visited. They attended a Chinese acrobat show. Students also learned about the importance of tea in China, how to make tea properly, how to hold their cups, as well as sampled

different kinds of tea at a tea house.

They also visited a silk factory where they saw the process of making raw silk into various products.

Part of the trip involved visiting NHS’s Chinese sister school – Fudan Experimental High School. All students were assigned a pen pal, which they shadowed for the entire day. The school performed music for our students when they first arrived. While there, students painted Emperor masks, practiced calligraphy, did TaiChi and sang a song with them. It was an English and Chinese. They also saw a drum performance and were given an opportunity to perform on drums with them.

Junior Rebecca Ross said, “Before I left for China, I was asked, ‘Why would you want to even go there?’ I had continuously answered along the lines of the fact that I wanted to explore the world and enjoy a new, unique experience. But, actually going on the trip was more phenomenal than I could have ever imagined. I bonded with people I never would have outside of the trip and made life-long friends. The country itself was gorgeous and seeing

Francis D’Agostino said, “I signed up for the China trip because I have always been interested in Asian culture and wanted to go on a trip. I probably wouldn’t ever do again. My favorite part was just walking around the city

with my new friends and absorbing the culture around us. I would recommend to anyone willing to walk and try new things.”

Superintendent Dr. Catherine Stickney stated, "This was the experience of a lifetime! Learning about Chinese history and seeing these landmarks with the students made the experience all the more worthwhile. We anticipate having an ongoing relation-

ship with a school in China. We hope to have an exchange program in the future. We already have a trip scheduled for next year to London, Paris, and Barcelona. It's exciting to show the students that being a global learner is the future of education."

Summer SensAbilities Program Free Admission and Therapist-Led Activities

Made-to-Order Mondays will provide free admission for families, day programs, and aides who wish to experience the MoWC in a low sensory, less crowded environment. Sensory elements such as lighting and sound are adjusted, and trained staff and volunteers are on hand to provide supplementary tools and offer tours to visitors who have children with special needs.

The first of these programs will be held on Monday, July 9th, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. with Wright’s Dairy Farm and Bakery. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with bakers from Wright’s while filling and frosting their own éclairs.

Each session is open to up to 10 participants, and registration is required.

Milford Regional Medical Center receives awards

Milford Regional Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

Milford Regional earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

Employee-Directed Mini-Grant Program has awarded $5.7 Million to NonProfits in New England Since 2002.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation has announced that three Uxbridge non-profit organizations were awarded a total of $1,500 from the Foundation’s Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. The organizations receiving funds are: • Uxbridge High School Parents for Safe Graduation ($500) • Uxbridge Senior Center ($500) • Worcester County Motorcyclists Survivors Fund ($500) To commemorate those Harvard Pilgrim members who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001, Harvard Pilgrim and the Foundation created the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. This program allows each Harvard Pilgrim employee to award a $500 grant, completely funded by the Foundation, to the local charity of his or her choice each calendar year. Since this community grants program began in 2002, Harvard Pilgrim employees have directed more than $5.7 million to thousands of organizations throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

New providers welcomed to MRMC staff Milford Regional Physician Group is pleased to welcome Ryan Shipe, MD and Lisa Malloy, NP. Both providers recently joined Lung, Allergy & Sleep Specialists located at 94 Mendon Street in Hopedale. Dr. Shipe attended medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Brown Medical School/Rhode Island Hospital. He went on to complete a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Center. For the past six years, he has practiced in the world-renowned Chronic Cough Clinic and, during that time, served as the Medical Director for Respiratory Care at UMASS Medical Center.

“Rides of Discovery” offered along bikeways

The Blackstone Heritage Corridor Bikeway Ambassadors, one of the many volunteer opportunities with the Corridor’s Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program, is leading a series of interpretive rides along different bikeways throughout the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor from Now through September. The public is invited to participate in rides and discover more about the many places to cycle in the Blackstone Valley and learn some history along the way.

“Rides of Discovery” continue in the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor this summer with a schedule offering more than a dozen bicycle rides led by volunteers of Blackstone Heritage Corridor’s (BHC) Bikeway Ambassadors, which will host guest riders to highlight the historical and natural resources found along the way. Group rides meet on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. along sections the Blackstone River Bikeway between Worcester and Providence, RI, as well as the Ten Mile River Greenway between Pawtucket, RI, and East Providence, RI, and the Woonasquatucket River Greenway in Providence, RI. rides earlier this spring, introducing new members and the public to highlights on and off the Blackstone River Bikeway, and the Bikeway Ambassadors are gearing up to keep rolling through the summer.

In July, two rides along the Rhode Island section of the Blackstone River Bikeway will be led by a Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park Ranger. On July 11th, meet at the Blackstone River State Park Visitor Center, I-295 Northbound in Lincoln, RI, and bike north to Albion, RI, for a 6-mile round trip interpretive ride. On July 18th, the Ranger-led ride will meet again at the Blackstone River State Park Visitor Center, I-295 Northbound in Lincoln, RI, and will venture south to Lonsdale, RI, for a 7.5 mile round trip. On July 25th, explore the Blackstone River Greenway in Massachusetts. This ride will meet in at 1 Adams St., Uxbridge and will be an interpretive ride with special guest Ranger Kathryn Parent, Visitor Services Supervisor with Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (MA DCR). This 7.5 mile round trip ride will cross several bridges and sections of the Blackstone

On August 1st, the “Rides of Discovery” return to the Ten Mile River Greenway, this time meeting at 401 Daggett Ave., Pawtucket, RI (Doreen Tomlinson Memorial Sports Field), for a 7 mile ride. On August 8th, explore the Woonasquatucket River Greenway in Providence, RI. Meet at Riverside Park at 50 Aleppo Street for a 5 mile round trip along the picturesque Woonasquatucket River to the current northern end of the trail at Lyman Avenue.

On August 15th, explore the Blackstone River Bikeway between Manville, RI, and Ashton, RI, traveling to the Capt. Wilbur Kelly House and Transportation Museum. Meet at the bikeway parking lot at 100 New River Rd., Manville, RI. Helmets are required for all rides and rides are weather dependent. Check BHC’s website and Facebook page for updates. Uxbridge Field Hockey Team honored with Sportsmanship Award

The Uxbridge Field Hockey Team was recently honored with an award at their annual athletic banquet. Carol Kronopolus, a Central Massa-chusetts Official and member of the Sportsmanship Committee, attended the banquet to present the 2017 Uxbridge Field Hockey team with the Central Massachusetts Field Hockey Officials Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Award is intended to recognize teams who exemplify good sportsmanship, integrity, respect for teammates, opponents, officials and the sport of field hockey. The criteria for this award involves both a player and coach conduct, Uxbridge being the unanimous choice for this years award. Uxbridge Field Hockey coaches and players were honored to receive this award and strive to exemplify sportsmanship in all aspects on & off the field.

You will discover evidence of ancient glaciers, uncover relics from Sutton’s earlier days, and can even marvel at the craftsmanship of Purgatory Chasm’s staff from years that have long since passed.
