Kieler Langemo on an excursion in Cascais, Portugal.

Uxbridge resident to study neuroscience in Spain Kieler Langemo, Uxbridge resident and undergraduate student at the University of Connecticut, was approved by UConn’s Experiential Global Learning department to study neuroscience abroad in Salamanca, Spain. The program, lasting from late May through June, is a joint partnership between the University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine and the University of Salamanca’s Institute of Neuroscience of Castilla y Leon. According to the program’s website, the courses offered introduce students to the field of neuroscience at an international level. “Science is increasingly a global endeavor that requires collaborations between researchers in different universities, countries, and continents. This program will broaden the scope of the science students by exposing them to a research environment in Spain.” Studying in Salamanca exposed Kieler to a unique post-pandemic cul-

tural immersion and allowed him to engage in courses that align with his academic ambitions. According to his program application, “the field of education has prevailed as my most promising career path that combines elements of both my majors—it combines the public policy and administrative leadership that underlies political science, and the psychological and neurobiological understanding of information processing that underlies cognitive science.” Aside from academic pursuits, Kieler defined the program as an opportunity to learn more about other people and their cultures. Kieler’s selection to participate in this program was made possible by UConn Health and the UConn Department of Cognitive Science. Students accepted to the program were required to complete a comprehensive application as well as meet specific program requirements: satisfy a minimum GPA of 3.0 and meet the prerequisites for the neuroscience course in which they wish to enroll. Kieler’s trip was graciously sponsored by Experiential Global Learning’s Global Citizenship Award, scholarship from the Foundation to Be Named Laters Peter Gammons Scholar program, and private donations from friends, family, and community members. Kieler will continue his education this fall as a third-year undergraduate student at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. He intends to graduate with a double major in Political Science and Cognitive Science, and minors in Anthropology and Digital Marketing & Analytics. For more information on Kieler’s individual efforts and achievements, visit www.kielerlangemo.com.
