School Board Update! The following items were discussed at the December 9, 2013, Board of Education meeting.

Volunteers Needed for Strategic Planning Process! Plans are currently underway to engage in a District-wide strategic planning process. The strategic plan will provide the District with a road map for the next several years. Staff and community input will be needed throughout the strategic planning process. If you have an interest in participating in the strategic planning process or if you would like additional information, please email PLSDcommunications@paplv.org.

HR Report Shared with Board Dr. Renee Hyde shared the human resources report for 2013-14 with the Board of Education. Highlights from the report include: • Official 2013-14 student enrollment is 10,753 - a 3.5% growth over last year.

1,573 individuals are employed by PLSD (812 teachers, 240 paraprofessionals). 81% of employees work directly with students. 20.75 is the average number of students per elementary classroom. The average number of students per secondary core classroom varies by schools: PLSHS 21.7, PLHS - 21.61, PJH - 21.82, LVJH- 23.69. 62% of PLSD teachers have their master’s degree. 12.34 is the average number of years of experience for teachers. The average teacher salary is $49,535. The average attendance rate for all employees is 96.23%.

Reminder! Central Office Closed for Winter Break The Central Office will be closed Tuesday, December 24, Wednesday, December 25, Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1 for winter break.

High School Sports Schedules Now Available on District App


High school sports schedules are now available on the District app. Never miss a game again! Follow the sport of your choice and you will always know when they are playing. Once you follow a sport, the schedule will appear in the app calendar. To add a sport’s schedule to your calendar, follow these steps: 1. Open the app.

2. Click on Calendar on the first page. 3. In the upper right hand corner, click the gear button. 4. Select which school you would like to follow. 5. Click each sport you would like to follow. Note: Many spring sports do not have their schedules finalized. Once the schedule is finalized, they will be posted. If you follow the sport now, when the schedule is added, it will appear in your calendar.

Mark Your Calendar! Interested in Retirement? Retirement Seminar Scheduled – January 22 at 4 p.m. Are you thinking retirement may be in your near future? Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about retirement. The PLEA and the Papillion-La Vista School District will be offering a retirement seminar on Wednesday, January 22 at 4 p.m. at the Central Office. Roger Rea, a former board member with the Nebraska State Education Association, will be here to talk to any staff considering retirement within the next five years. Show Your School Spirit and Support Cancer Awareness! Purchase Your Shirt Today! The PLSHS gymnasium will be a sea of colors as the Papillion-La Vista High School Monarchs take on the Papillion-La Vista South High School Titans in the annual “Color of HOPE” basketball game on Friday, January 17 at Papillion-La Vista South High School. The girls game will be at 5:30 p.m. and the boys game at 7:15 p.m. The theme for this year is “We Play For a Cure Together.” T-shirts in 16 different colors/designs will be sold prior to the game. Students, parents and fans are invited to attend the game wearing their t-shirts and supporting the two high school teams. Color of HOPE t-shirt order forms can be found at the District webpage by clicking here or through your building wellness representative. T-shirt orders will be accepted until December 20. After the deadline, a limited number will be available at the PLHS and PLSHS bookstores, as well as, at the game. All proceeds from the t-shirts go to the American Cancer Society. Don’t miss this great opportunity to show your Monarch and Titan spirit while supporting a good cause!

Business Update! Mileage Rate Change As of January 1, 2014, the mileage rate will change from 56.5 cents per mile to 56.0 cents per mile. Please submit any claim for mileage prior to January 1, 2014 on a separate claim sheet. The mileage rate form will be updated on the website on January 1, 2014 for staff to submit 2014 reimbursements.

Contest Available for Student Participation The Papillion-La Vista School District is connecting staff with community youth contests. Below is a list of current contests that are available for students. Teachers can choose to if they would like to have students participate in any of the contests, or they can do nothing.


Audubon Society of Omaha Student Art Contest The Audubon Society of Omaha will be hosting a Student Art Contest. The deadline for submission is Saturday, February 22. For more information, click here.

ELK's Essay and Poster Contest The ELK's is currently hosting an essay and poster contest. The contests are open to students in grades 6th-8th. The deadline to enter is January 15, 2014. For more details on the poster contest, click here. For more details on the essay contest, click here.

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium Poster Contest The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is hosting their annual poster contest. Posters must be returned to the PLSD Central Office or your child's school by February 9, 2014 in order to meet the Zoo's deadline. For more information, click here.

Staff Offers Remember to Check Out the Website for Staff Discounts, Coupons and Special Offers The Papillion-La Vista School District has now set up a place on the District website, where discounts, coupons and special offers for staff will be placed. The page includes information on the Scholastic warehouse sale, chiropractic consultation and much more. The page can be found on the homepage of the “For Staff” section of the website. There is a maroon bar on the left hand side titled “Staff Offers.” Scroll over it and select the flyout. You can also click here to check out the new page. The information changes often, so be sure to check back frequently.
